Kona is 50% US and 50% Canadian owned. It is an independent company; no one owns us and we don’t own anything else. We design all of our bikes from the ground up and visit the factories that make our frames and components and assemble our bikes in Taiwan every month while they are being produced. Bikes these days are a virtual United Nations (we have parts on our bikes made in Canada, China, France, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, USA) so it is almost impossible to get even half the parts on a bike from one country now. It is great to support your home country but the most important thing for Kona is to make the best bikes we can because our bikes are ridden by serious riders all around the world who expect nothing short of perfection.

KONA 7005 ALUMINUM Kona 7005 Aluminum is used extensively throughout our fleet of mountain, asphalt and road bicycles. A tough, durable, affordable, light alloy, Kona 7005 delivers fantastic, reliable performance that lasts for thousands of rides. It is, by far, the ultimate aluminum tubing on the market today. Much of our 7005 tubing is butted and/or formed, meaning the tubing’s wall thickness can be increased or decreased, as well as shaped, allowing us to fine-tune a particular frame’s ride characteristics depending on its intended application.

KONA RACE LIGHT 7005 ALUMINUM Kona Race Light 7005 is a lighter, more performance-oriented fabrication of our 7005 Aluminum tubing. Designed to meet Kona’s discerning race specifications, Race Light 7005 uses custom butting to create thicker tubes at weld areas and at important parts of the frame, providing incredible strength and torsional integrity to the ride. We remove wall thickness in other parts of the frame set to lighten up the bike, providing the perfect balance between quickness and stiffness. The emphasis here is on performance, lightness and speed built the Kona way: a Kona Race Light 7005 bike will get you to the podium for years to come.

TECHNOLOGY KONA SCANDIUM 6069 Known to be one of the lightest and strongest alloys in the world, and originally developed by the aerospace industry, new Kona Scandium 6069 is featured in many of our high-end bike models, from dual-suspension mountain bikes through to some of our top-ranking asphalt rides. Scandium is a rare earth metal and potent grain refiner that, when added to aluminum alloy, elevates the strength and durability of the material by 50 percent. Scandium aligns the grains of the alloy, making the metal less susceptible to failure. Scandium alloys are twice as strong as 6061 or 7005 aluminum, which means our Product Team uses much less material. Because of a Scandium alloy’s strength, it can be butted thinly enough so the aluminum gives a more compliant feel that’s similar to steel but without weight. In more specific terms, we’re shaving weight off our aluminum frames by 10 to 15 percent, without sacrificing strength and durability. New Kona Scandium 6069 recently made available for 2012, comes with yield strengths that are about 40 percent higher than previous scandium alloys. The result is the strongest perweight aluminum alloy ever made. Because of its fibrous or fine-grained structure, Scandium 6069 alloy reveals a unique combination of high strength, high toughness, good corrosion resistance and excellent fatigue strength. TECHNOLOGY KONA CARBON RACE Kona Carbon Race bicycle frames are built at one of the most advanced bicycle manufacturing facilities in the world: Hodaka. In addition to producing cold-forged bicycle and frame components, including wheels for Shimano and Easton, Hodaka employs an industry-leading carbon-fiber fabrication process. Combine Kona’s race-proven geometries with one of the lightest, strongest and ride-savvy materials on the planet, then put them in a facility known for its innovation, leadership, and attention to detail, and you have some of the most beautifully riding bicycles around. We will be producing a new Kona Carbon Race bicycle at Hodaka for 2012. Joining the Kula Watt, our lightning-quick 26-inch hardtail cross-country race bike, and the Major Jake, our top-of-the-line cyclocross race bike, is the King Kahuna hardtail 29er, the fastest big-wheeled mountain bike we’ve ever made. • The Technology: Kona Carbon Race bicycles use Prepeg technology, a specially formulated resin matrix system reinforced with man-made fibers such as carbon, glass and aramid. When cured, the Prepegs used in Kona frames represent an incredibly solid structural material that is highly durable, temperature resistant, exceptionally stiff and lightweight. These resin formulations and fiber-impregnation technologies are designed in concert with Kona’s stringent product design requirements, making our bikes the ultimate balance between stiffness, lightness and ride quality. • Molding Process: At the bottom bracket, headtube and seat area, Kona Carbon Race frames use special internal silicon shells that increase the compression of carbon fibers layered in the mold. The method prevents the internal formation of wrinkles, another potential breaking point that, when avoided, increases the fatigue resistance of the bike and results in a lighter frame.

From rider fit to cornering performance and every nuance in between, the Kona Ride has long been a definitive element of what makes our company unique. We design bikes that are playful and fun. Our bikes inspire confidence, balance, performance and comfort, and they ultimately get the most out of you, the engine, the bike’s most important component.

SLOPING TOPTUBE Kona recognized the advantages of sloping toptube frame design right from the beginning. Designed by inaugural MTB-Hall-of-Fame legend Joe Murray back in 1988, the very first Konas were some of the first mountain bikes to feature sloping toptubes (STT). As a company we’ve stayed true to this philosophy, going so far as to pioneer the design in road bikes long before its benefits were understood by most of the industry. Because of the many positives STT design brings to overall bike performance and comfort, you’ll find it today throughout our entire line of road, commuter and mountain bikes. Here’s why: Firstly, STT design allows the toptube to be lower, providing more room for correct positioning and free body movement and enabling more standover clearance, which is particularly useful on dual-suspension bikes that have higher bottom brackets. Riders have a more secure riding position, a real benefit when riding downhill sections. Secondly, a big benefit of STT is a longer and more compliant toptube. As the top and downtube become more parallel, there’s less triangulation, resulting in more compliancy. Not only is the frame stronger and more responsive, but it absorbs more shock than frames with horizontal toptubes.

COMPACT REAR TRIANGLE Short chainstays and seatstays provide a perfect balance of stability and power transfer when out of the saddle and pedaling hard. Shorter seatstays also have less deflection during braking and accelerate faster than longer stays. The shorter rear triangle also helps the bike to negotiate tight-twisting sections of trail. Our new Entourage short-travel downhill bike is a good example of an incredibly compact rear triangle. Our goal was to create a bike that was easy to jump and trick, and could also corner aggressively. With seatstays measuring just 415mm, we’ve created one of the most nimble short travel DH bikes in the industry.

TECHNOLOGY HYDROFORMED TUBING Hydroforming is a tube-shaping technology that uses highpressure liquid to form the shape of a tube and align its grain structure. Quite simply, the technology delivers a sound structure and ride performance like no other tubing in the world. The process results in a seamless, continuous, aligned piece of metal—right down to the fiber structure itself. Hydroformed tubing is especially advantageous at weld points where tubes can be flared to increase weld areas, adding strength without adding weight in the form of extra gussets. The result is a strong, flawless frame with great lateral stability, durability and responsiveness. Not to mention, it looks real sharp too. n

SUPERPLASTIC FORMED TUBING Superplastic Forming (SPF) uses high temperatures to shape aluminum tubing when the tube structure is in its most “plastic” and formable state. SPF creates better tube shapes that cannot be produced using traditional forming techniques. Whereas shape designs can be applied to between 20 and 30 percent of the tube using hydroforming, SPF means 90 percent of the tube can be shaped, resulting in more optimized shapes and less weight. SPF tubes are the perfect alternative to the infinitely more expensive carbon fiber, and they are comparable in weight and performance, without the accompanying disadvantages. SPF tubes are also recyclable. SPF Tubing is featured on the following Kona 2012 models: Mina, Blast, Cinder Cone, Caldera, Kahuna and Mahola.

INTERNAL HEADSET By having the headset bearing located inside the headtube (called zero stack), rather than the top and bottom, we are able to achieve a number of advantages when it comes to front-end stiffness, durability and overall riding performance. The major benefit of an internal headset is the extra layer of protection it provides the bearings against the elements. Additionally, the bearings are commonly available angular contact bearings, which are easily and inexpensively replaced. An internal headset also reduces stack height, so the height of the stem and bars are more adjustable, giving the rider the best fit possible.

TECHNOLOGY TAPERED HEADTUBE For 2012, you’ll find a large majority of Kona bicycles featuring zero stack, tapered headtubes. From cyclocross to cross-country, 29ers right through to longer-travel dual-suspension models, like our Entourage and Operator, a tapered headtube provides more support at the intersection of the toptube and downtube, greatly improving stability and overall performance. The design also offers a more solid interface between forks with tapered steertubes and the bicycle frame itself. More girth at the bottom of the headtube better distributes shock force, prolonging the bearing life of the headset itself. The inherent strength of its triangular design also means a stronger steering position and improved balance, giving the rider more control in rough terrain. A zero stack, tapered headtube also puts strength where the load is going—into the lower headset cup—maximizing bearing durability where it’s needed.

ASYMMETRICAL CHAINSTAYS When a rider puts force into a bicycle’s drivetrain (cranks, chain and rear cassette), they are propelling the bike forward and also putting a significant amount of torsion on the rear chainstays. Because the drivetrain is on one side of the bicycle, the frame wants to flex laterally. It is the one element of bike design that’s not in perfect balance. Used primarily on our dual-suspension mountain bikes, asymmetrical stays help to stiffen the rear end by compensating for the offset forces of this imbalance. The drive side chainstay is straight, while the non-drive side chainstay takes advantage of no chain rings and chain, incorporating an asymmetrical stay that’s better able to counter the torsional forces in the rear triangle. By putting strength where it is needed, pedaling stiffness and rider efficiency is greatly increased. Asymmetrical stays also allow us to use a shorter and lighter non-drive side chainstay. The weight saved can be added to the drive side chainstay so that it can take heavy rotating loads generated from powerful multi-piston hydraulic brakes and large rotors.

TECHNOLOGY KONA MAGIC LINK ACTIVE GEOMETRY – INTUITIVE ADAPTABILITY With the ability to change geometry, travel length and suspension performance based entirely on rider and trail input, Kona’s patented Magic Link Active Geometry is one of the most intuitive and adaptable rear-travel suspension platforms ever invented. By using both a main air shock and a coil-sprung auxiliary shock, Magic Link is able to deliver relatively quick, linear, cross-country-oriented suspension that’s ideally suited for climbing, and, without flicking a switch or making any external adjustments, Magic Link changes to a longer, more progressive, noticeably plush suspension designed to take on big hits and technical terrain. Here’s how:

BENEFITS OF A TWO SHOCK SYSTEM Variable Spring Rate One of Magic Link’s more unique characteristics is its use of two shocks. The result is a highly adaptable variable spring rate that enables the bike’s rear suspension to be quick and short on the climb, and slower and more plush during the descent. Two shocks working together in series also allows the rear wheel to pop over big, sharp bumps with virtually no resistance. Because the main shock becomes more progressive as the link engages, it won’t blow through the travel or bottom out. It’s important to remember that the auxiliary shock is in a constant state of flux depending on pedal (rider) and trail (terrain) input.

CLIMBING Effective pedal pressure keeps the Magic Link’s auxiliary shock from engaging, so the rider is only using the main shock.

Extended Travel Finally, Magic Link also has the ability to lengthen rear travel. In our Cadabra models, travel ranges from 100mm in climbing mode to 160mm when fully engaged. In our CoilAir series travel ranges from 125mm to 200mm. In our 2+2 cross-country models, travel ranges from 50mm to 100mm. agic Link is the preferred ride of our Kona Team Enduro Riders M Karim Amour, Matt Slaven and Alex Stock.

This results in good pedaling efficiency by enabling comfortable geometry and firmer, more linear suspension characteristics. Everything you need for good power transfer.

TECHNOLOGY CROSS-COUNTRY Tire drag, faster corners and bigger bumps cause the Magic Linkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s auxiliary shock to move deeper into its travel.

DESCENTS When the main shock and the auxiliary shock are fully engaged, the bikeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s geometry slackens considerably, enabling the rider to position themselves further behind the bike.

Chainstays elongate, the saddle and bottom bracket lower, and the headtube slackens, all amounting to an agile, confident riding position, with increased wheel traction and plusher travel.

The result is a lower center of gravity and an extended rear triangle for increased stability. Rear wheel travel also increases, and the rear shock becomes more progressive to avoid bottom out.

TECHNOLOGY KONA WALKING BEAM 4-BAR LINKAGE Since Kona first introduced the Walking Beam 4-Bar Linkage platform in 1996, we’ve been refining and honing the most functional, durable and performance-oriented dualsuspension platform ever invented. Not only is it the preferred suspension system for F1 race cars, you’ll also find versions of Kona’s Walking Beam 4-Bar Linkage on everything from the Hei Hei XC race bike, to our Supreme Operator DH race bike, and on one of the bestperforming, entry-level dual-suspension bikes ever made, the Tanuki.

Pure Shock Movement Another benefit of our 4-Bar system is minimized side load on the rear shock. If you have close pivot points and/or the shock positioned so that it is exposed to lateral forces, you have side load on the shock. Side load causes resistance, which can negatively impact suspension performance.

Shock Longevity With our 4-Bar system the rear shock is protected from side-to-side forces. Side load is one of the main causes of premature seal failures. As a result, we have a very low rate of shock problems, as well as an exceptionally responsive feel to the rear suspension.

Function and Durability Anytime you have a pivot in anything, there is side-to-side movement, or tolerance. It’s what allows the pivot to move freely. When you have pivots that are close together, the side-to-side movement in those pivots becomes amplified, what’s called tolerance stacking. Kona’s 4-Bar system keeps pivots as far away from each other as possible, minimizing the negative effects of tolerance stacking. Ultimately, it equates to a stiffer rear end, as well as a significant decrease in bearing and bushing wear.

TECHNOLOGY Incredible Tune-ability By using 4-Bar, our designers are able to incorporate a huge range of suspension characteristics into our dual-suspension mountain bikes. Simply by changing the shock’s positioning and configuration, we’re able to make either an efficient climber or a wicked descender. For example, on our XC bikes, we can take an inherently progressive air shock and make the suspension more linear, allowing the rider to benefit from all of the bike’s travel. For downhill bikes, like our Operator and Entourage, an inherently linear coil shock can be set up to be more progressive for big hits. When it comes to range of application, 4-Bar is the ultimate rear suspension platform.

Plush Factor With pivots, bearings and the shock itself well supported and protected from linear side load, Kona’s Walking Beam 4-Bar Linkage system delivers that extraordinarily plush, smooth feel we all crave as mountain bikers. Whether it’s taking the edge of a technical XC race course, the burl out of a backcountry all-day epic, or leveling out the brake bumps at your local bike park, Kona’s Walking Beam 4-Bar Linkage delivers that sweet feel. Ride in, ride out.

TECHNOLOGY KONA SIZING AND FIT Sizing and fit have always been one of the main strengths of the Kona Ride. With more stock sizes available than any other bike company, our size scale is designed to be continuous from platform to platform and is easy to understand from the perspective of the consumer because our simplified system allows easy fine-tuning that creates a perfect marriage of bike and rider. On our Trail/All-Mountain and XC Race bikes, we feature longer toptubes coupled with shorter stems and slightly shorter headset stack heights. The steps between sizes are at half-inch to oneinch increments, with up to seven sizes that can range from 14 to 22 inches on many models. In the asphalt range, size gaps are at even 15 to 20mm steps. There are still up to six sizes, from 46cm to 61cm on most models. When itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s called for, seat posts are either offset or straight to maximize the reach and power output of the rider. More importantly, our comprehensive bike sizing allows Kona dealers and riders to determine their fit more easily from model to model and category to category.

LIFETIME WARRANTY Kona warrants to the original owner that their new Kona bicycle frame purchased from an authorized Kona dealer shall be free of defective materials or workmanship for the lifetime of ownership by the original owner. This warranty is limited to five years for carbon fiber frames and three years for electric pedal-assist frames. During this warranty period, Kona shall repair or replace, at its sole option, the bicycle frame if Kona determines the frame is defective and subject to this limited warranty. The original owner shall pay all labor and shipping charges connected with the repair or replacement of the bicycle frame. The Buddhist term for enlightenment, what’s considered a first step toward nirvana, Satori epitomizes the sensation you’ll get from our new 130mm travel 29er dual suspension mountain bike. Using a swing link version of our legendary 4-Bar suspension, we’re able to create an aggressive all-mountain trail bike with relatively long travel for a 29er, while still keeping a short wheelbase and compact chainstays for quick acceleration, great trail handling, and awesome rider fit. Featuring a stiff 142x12 rear axle, tapered headtube, ISCG 05 tabs, direct-mount front derailleur and cartridgesealed bearings, take the Satori step. Nirvana is pretty sweet.

Long-time Kona Cyclocross and XC Racer Erik Tonkin hails from Portland, Oregon. Erik, who rides his bike everywhere, happens to live in a very rainy city. But that doesn’t stop him from riding his bicycle day in and day out. We built the Honky Tonk specifically for Erik, who had requested a Paddy Wagon with gears. The result is a well-thoughtout Cromoly road frame that’s comfortable, light and smooth, with components and features specific to cycling in the rain, like long-reach calipers for excellent big-tire and fender clearance.
