New acquisition: Darrel Ralph Gunhammer

It's not often that I get a new toy in and immediately decide it's not a keeper, but this is one of those times. WAY smaller than anticipated, not a good fit for my hand. Aluminum handles are far too slick to get a solid grip on. Poor fit & finish throughout the entire knife. Really poor. I chose to discard the photos that showed most of that. I know I only paid $300 for it, but I expected higher quality from it honestly. But it looks pretty cool, and the assisted opening system he employs is nice. The HTM series is his semi-custom (HTM stands for Hand-Tech Made actually), so I'm sure his full-custom work is much more refined. I wouldn't shy away from a different knife purchase from him, but this one in particular I am sending back... maybe a full custom Mad Maxx III or IV could be in my future though....

Looks really good in these photos, I certainly don't notice the poor finishing. The lack of grip on aluminum handles is very clear to me though, I've come to the same conclusion, worse than just about any other material I've felt in a knife handle (even plastic). tkromer View Public Profile Send a private message to tkromer Send email to tkromer Find all posts by tkromer Add tkromer to Your Contacts #3 05-26-2010, 11:23 AM

It looks nice, but I just don't get the curve of the blade, unless you are cutting carpet. __________________

I hate it when you are really looking forward to a new addition to your collection and then when you get it you are let down. That really sucks! Sorry it wasn't for you Jim. But thanks for the pics. BTW> Hope you are feeling better and get back to work real soon. Hold on a minute, what do you mean "I know I only paid $300 for it", am I missing something here? Come-on-now Jim $300 dollars for a knife (my friend) is nothing to sneeze at. Jim I've got to respond like this I'm sorry, you know darn gone well one need not spend big-big bucks in order to obtain a quality knife. If you tell me you spent $300 for a knife and you don't like it, trust me I'm not going to think thats what you get for spending (ONLY) $300. The last thing that will go through my mind is 'gee wiz look at that, Jim is becoming a cheap/money-spending knife collector'. Had you'd said the knife was $75 or even $125, I suppose my opinion would probably have gone in another direction. However, I do respect your perspective, I would only hope that you respect mine in kind. Hope your feeling better. P.S. I'm not trying to be argumentative JIm, more like someone trying to understand a standard that reflects quite the contrary of what I might consider midrange spending/value. Note: The pocket/clip holder is set much to low on the handle. __________________

You have to keep it in context. Considering Darrel Ralph creates custom knives, this is a mid-range semi-custom, so yes... this is inexpensive in terms of what he typically manufactures, so you cannot expect the same level of the $1,000 version of this knife. __________________

However, let us not forget that off/times the word 'context' (in theory), is categorically marked by the eye of the beholder, if I may be so bold. By the way Jim, I wasn't all that keen on the low set pocket-clip design. How do you feel about that design? At the end of the day (to put it bluntly), what you have is a poser, makes for good-face in the collection. You won't get that kind of critique anywhere but here. __________________ Mr. Squander The peasant has spoken I change watches like I change avatars-avat.#10 onceuponatime

Couldn't tell ya, I never slipped it into my pocket before packing it back to up ship back. Good news is that I have been in contact with Darrel now, and he and I have become shockingly fast friends, and he is working on some custom stuff for me as we speak, so I'll have some new custom Darrel Ralph toys to play with soon He is also making me a custom "pointer" to use on my shows so I don't have to use a watch springbar tool for pointing. He and I are also looking at some collaborative work as well. I am definitely branching out this year, so I will be doing alot of work in the knife world this year. I already have two of my designs being made by Combative Edge, have spoken to one individual whom I cannot name yet (he is an absolute legend in the industry) that I am working out some details with, and now Darrel and I want to do some stuff together. Darrel is just an awesome guy, and just simply loves what he does. __________________
