Stop complaining about watches being too large!

Maybe I'm missing something but it seems that every time a new watch is unveiled many geeks simply dismiss it because of size; the small 40mm watches of yesteryear are gone and for the most part good riddance, With all of the wonderful dial choices now available at affordable prices it has released the strangle hold that watch makers like Rolex and Cartier had on the industry for years.

I dont think small watches are gone .I have watches from 40mm up to 53mm. And I like big watches but if I go to a Blacktie Affair or someplace like that I like to wear my 40mm Monaco.Ever try to wear a SAS with french cuffs .It doesnt work,All sizes have their place in the watch world __________________

Opinions are always welcome, and I for one agree with you here. Just keep in mind that those who prefer the oversize pieces are in very small minority. The vast majority, by a long shot, of the watch buying public wear and prefer the 38-42mm size watches. There is a BIG world out there, outside of this forum. My 2 cents .. __________________

Gone? Someone better let Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Tag Heuer, Maurice Lacroix, Clerc, Corum, Pateke Philipe, and all the others I did not mention know they are about to go under.

Though there are some 25,000 members here one must realize that that is just a miniscule percentage of watch officiando's/collectors out there.

There is a difference (in purpose) between large watches and oversized watches. Some have large wrists and thus require a large watch for it to look appropriate while others wear oversized watches because they want that bold, in your face, look what I got look.

I think the large watches are here to stay because we will always have people with larger wrists but the oversize market, at least IMHO, is only a fad. Once the fad goes away the demand for large watches will shrink.

History always repeats itself and the standard 40mm watch will return. When? Who knows I caught got up in the 50mm craze and I have a smaller wrist. I came to my senses, at least for me, and am going back to the 40-47mm size watch.

I agree that the trend is big big and bigger but there still a lot of 40\42mm being sold.

Croton, SWI, Andriod and Invicta are all still making some small watches. Besides there is a ton of very nice hardly used small watches for sell. Example I had a collection of over 100 watches all 42mm and under. Now that the market and style is big I love the look and could never ever go back to a small watch. No matter where the style goes I will always have a hunk slung to my wrist until the day the Lord brings me home. So I have sold all my small watches under 43mm at a super low price. Good deal for thoses who still love the small look.

As for me and all of my watch buddies we will not even consider a new watch that is under 46mm. Once you go big you can never go back. __________________

I have to admit, although I love the bigger, sexier, bolder, crazy styled watches, the smaller

watches I do own, I no longer wear. I will keep them and pass them along to my sons... they are of course higher end and just because they are small doesn't mean they are not worth their weight in watch! So true, until recently everything I bought was 52mm or so. Got the Deep Blue 45mm and re-discovered that I actually do like smaller watches. Even got the Pro Diver 44mm from WOW this week. The biggies will continue to sell, but don't sell the smaller sizes short! arcata1946

It is all a matter of personal preference. 40mm watches are not going anywhere, as I do not think 50mm watches will be going anywhere soon. I like my watches in the 40-47mm range, and I only comment when a new watch comes out over that size range it is too big for me.

Its all relative to your wrist size and what you are going to wear the watch for.I think you are hearing complaints are from those myself included that would buy certain watches if they werent so big like the Meteorite PD.I dont mind having a few big ones but I wont have a whole collection of them the same for 42mm watches.The attention you get from the big watches I am not really looking for. I would rather someone compliment my watch because its a great watch no matter what the size. __________________

It's all About what a person likes I never complain about size but I usually wont buy anything over 48mm because I don't feel it looks right on my 71/4 inch wrist. I`m complaining about nuthin`!!! I have been assimilated by the RD`s,SAN III`s and a whole lots of other larger watches since falling into this OCD hobby. Certaily a SO 44 skelton will be great for formal affairs and the big bling the rest of the time. Wear what you want and quit the b***hn` __________________

Humans come in all shapes and sizes as well and yet we all belong. It all depends on the collector. I started out with vintage. All of a sudden I went from a 1966 Omega to a Russian diver. Whoa!

People still love nostalgia. If you like big hooray if you like small cool. It does not make a difference. We have one common denominator.

Sorry but I don't believe that smaller watches are gone. I have watches of all sized and wear them all. I admit that larger watches are coming out and for me they don't work. at least the ones above 50mm are too big for my wrist. So if all a company does is larger watches then

it's time to move on to a different company. If I can't find something smaller then it's time for me to get a new hobby.

To each his/her own in prefered watch sizes...but let's not get all crazy up in here! There is not a wide spread trend regarding oversize watches. Folks have a distorted perspective when their experience in limited and the perspective and experience in this forum...big watches! The entire planet is not leaning strongly towards 50mm watches and the 40-42 mm will most likely be the worldly norm for our lifetime. Nonetheless, all that embrace the big watches...enjoy!

I suspect most "it's too big" comments are in response to someone posting the question, "What do you think of the new Invictenatodroid model" After all, if someone asks, it seems like a legit answer if you don't happen to care for larger watches. Guys there's plenty of mid size watches out there. I've gotten used to larger ones and like them. However, the classic sizes are not going anywhere and will be around and worn much longer than the monsters. When I know I'll be wearing a watch for 12 straight hours, I'd rather strap on a 43mm pro diver or something as it is more comfortable and lightweight. __________________

Just kidding.

All opinions are welcome and what you state as complaining may just be someone giving their opinion just like you did when starting this thread. I wear 50 and 52mm and enjoy the look and design, but I, like others here, will not get rid of their 40-44mm watches. The smaller ones I reserve for business especially since I work in a conservative environment and hold a leadership position. There's a time and place for all watches and if you acquire a taste for high-end timepieces you are looking at 40-42mm on average. __________________ Too many watches, not enough time.

I always think of it like this: If you don't like something, don't buy it. Pretty simple philosophy. An additional part of this is also: If you don't like something and you aren't buying it - then do it quietly. No one cares if someone doesn't like big watches, or someone else doesn't like small watches.

For example: I don't like cars with 22 inch chrome spinner rims - but I don't go around complaining to everyone about it.

There are plenty of small watches out there still, and the majority of people will continue to buy them because they prefer the look. I think all sizes apply here. Realize though, no opinion here is wrong, it's your right to express your opinion, and thankfully you have.

If we did'nt have many points of view, there is no discussion, and there is no debating, to really think about, what, has actually revolutionized the watch industry.

Invicta imo, went boldly where no one would go, "larger."

I vividly remember Jim S showing the Russian Diver for the first time and showing a 40mm Pro-Diver next to it, wow that was an eye full at that moment, and a challenge to buy it and pop it on the wrist and gasp.

Now it's commonplace, and 40mm seem small, but it's a visual perspective now, and the game has changed.

I do agree many would not go back to 40mm and others would not want larger, it's a demographic attitude by person, and individual taste.

I did have an interesting comment by a 20 year old gal who was at my watch maker's as I got a battery for my yellow RD. She gasped at it, and said, "man that is huge, what for?"

She asked to try it on, and I said, "Think of it as a bangle bracelet that tells time."

She instanly wanted it, and said, "this is also great for older people, no glasses needed."

Another lady said, " I like traditional size watches," albeit a bit curious.

I think it's like any market, you need to service each and every customer's want's and desires or they look elsewhere, and once the manufacturer disappoints, that customer will either vacate your product mix and never return, or wait for what sings to them, as it presents itself for emanination.

I think each person listens for the song of the personal grail, there are a lot of 40mm Rollies still going out the door and for Invicta as well, the 40mm Pro-Diver gave the blood to Invicta to spread its wings and fly.

Your point is well taken and valuable as an attitude of a customer that falls into a product segment.

People may sound like they are complaining but they are expressing their needs and desires and peeves as well, about a certain product or product mix.

Thankfully it sounds like you're happy with larger timepieces, so they made both you and me happy as well.

I am glad you posted this thread, because part of collecting, and debating over a possible grail can be hard, we are all visual artists here , if not we would all use cell phones to tell the time, and be bored silly.

Bless the 316L stainless steel set, that's all I can say.

Be proud of your stance, other WG's see and listen to a discussion and it adds to the mystiques of collecting.

It's like going to a fine arts museum, someone may make a comment about a painting and another may scoff, but each person has the right to express their opinions and feelings, kudos for doing so, it makes me think about timepieces more and that's what makes a day have sunshine. Yep, I think this is the bigger point of the thread. Look, "classic style" will ALWAYS be in, I don't care if it is in clothing like a suit, or fine watches. There may be styles which come and go, but classics are timeless. I personally have watches from 38mm to 60mm in my collection....a time and place for them all.

I don't complain too much I hope about larger size watches. My own preference is 40-45mm.

I just don't buy anything larger than 46mm. However, I do complain about the variety on shopnbc. There just isn't any variety in my size range...and before you say "there's plenty of watches in that range"...there's really not. Stuhrling has gone big, Andriod has gone big, and Invicta has certainly gone big, and Renato has always been big.

Variety is the spice of life. I enjoy the big watches even with my small wrist. Still, I enjoy a smaller watches on occasion. They are a welcome relief from the nearly one pound venoms, which I love for only so long.

I personally LOVE 45-46mm watches. That is why I have several Renato Wildebeasts in my collection. If the large watch market were so small, rhe entire industry would not be scrambling to build larger watches, and the average size would not have grown from 36-40mm to 42-44mm in just a few years. I certainly don't think that 40 mm sizes are "outdated" or "gone" - Indeed the Classic size is in the 38-42 mm range.

I have everything from a Russian Diver at 52 mm to a 2 hand Citizen @ 30 mm. (square) The Citizen was made in the mid to late 1980's. I have a Hamilton Thin-o-matic that is 33 mm - 40 + years old. Typically today, many companies (such as Invicta) market that size to

women.

I have several others that were made in the '90's and 2000's and are all in the 35-38 mm range (not counting my two faux Rolex's which are both 40 mm) Most watch companies still don't make much beyond about 44 mm or so. Invicta, Renato, Android are among the few companies that manufacture and sell watches at 50 + mm. __________________

Greg, I can only speak for myself. Large watches are not for me. They do not fit me and they do not look good on me. Through trial and error, I have found that 48 or 48mm is about my top limit. Sometimes I make a remark such as "too big," though usually I say "it's too big for me." I really don't mind the existence of oversized watches. What irks me is that for the last several years (that is, the whole time I've had an interest in collecting watches) staple companies such as Invicta and Renato do not put the kick-butt movements into their regular or mid-size watches. The oversize pieces have been getting all the 7750's and Valgranges and DD movements. For example, I like my midsize SAS, but I'd love it if it were an automatic. Unfortunately, no automatic midsize was made. Invicta finally, FINALLY, made a

47mm watch with a 7750 - the Reserve Pro Diver, but this is the exception, not the rule.

I feel that it is time for this new guy to speak a little piece of my mind, concerning size of wathces. Although i'm not a big fan of the big oversize timepieces. I have come to really enjoy the watches for whatever that particular timepiece may bring to the table(watch table).
