Veteran Geek the cost of a watch

I think we all often debate the cost of a watch and whether or not it will go lower. Well this is interesting. I had my eye on a ML Pontos rectangular with power reserve and date at 3. Shop had it for about 1600 - retail price was 2850. I think this was at the end of last year. I even checked websites and did not find it less that 1000. Well, I bought it privately for 925 and now I see on WOW it is 700. So I guess the point is, if you wait long enough, prices come down as product must be moved. This is often what we see on the shop - the price drops over time The question is, if you wait too long, it might be sold out. It is a balancing act john g

Patience....Some brands can be purchased at a good discount after several months.

I generally pick out the next purchase I'm going to make months in advance. During that time period, I can see how the trend is going and whether I should jump when I can afford it, or continue to wait a little longer. I suppose it's possible I could miss out on some VERY limited edition watch someday, but it's never happened.

I learned my lesson years ago, not to be the first on the block to get a new model. Waiting definitely gives you a better deal on pricing, but you do take the chance of not getting your first choice in either dial color, case color, strap, bracelet, ect, and sometimes not getting it at all. But most times even with "Limited Editions" there still seems to be enough to go around, and if you're patient, you can save a lot of green.

I find it quite humorous to hear that popular phrase, "If Your Not On The Phone Right Now, You're Not Going To Get One" and then months go by, and there is still plenty in stock. Oh I know that's not the case every time, but it does happen more often then not. So I don't listen to the hype, I do my homework, keep a close watch on the pieces I like, and strike when the price is right. Ken..

well - in my case with the ML I did wait - even checked on line and saw the price too high - wanted it under 1000 and when it happened I bought. Now it is on line for 200 less

Now it is on line for 200 less I wouldn't feel bad about it, cause you wanted it for under a grand, and got it. There's always going to be some one selling for less, but you should feel good about getting the watch for the price you originally wanted. I know is sucks to think you could have saved a couple hundred bucks, but don't let that take away from the good deal you got, and spoil your enjoyment of the watch. Ken..

For the most part, the only watches that go up in value every year are the vintage timepieces from 40's70's. Every once in a while, one of the newer watches increases in value, but they're usually not a good investment, as their prices predictably drop.

Sometimes my desire to have a particular watch is modified by the thought that watches are something I merely want, not something I need. Cuts down on the rationalization (I deserve this watch right now because....) and usually allows me to "cool down" and wait for a better price. __________________ They all wound - the last one kills (inscribed below a 15th century clock)

I like getting good deals but when I see a watch that retails for $4995.95 selling for $795.00 it makes me

think less of the brand. Brand value and retaining brand value are very important. There is a big difference between what people will pay and what the factory will sell it for. Some brands will lower the value of the watch to match the customer and some brands prefer the customer to raise their value to match the watch. A brand that retains it's value commands respect. That being said, I'm wearing a watch that retails for $4995.95 that I paid $795.00 for and could not be happier.
