Improvisation is to music what conversation is to recitation; the discussion of an agreed topic without following a rigid text. It’s an area that most classically trained musicians shy away from, generally because part of their training has been to slavishly follow the printed score and not to deviate from what they believe is the composer’s intention. Creativity in music is too often stamped out at an early stage thus denying young musicians the chance to experience what should be a liberating and exhilarating experience. Waterford New Music Week 2012 seeks to examine, encourage and celebrate this most important area of music making.
