national framework of qualifications (NFQ)
How do I pay? you must pay the full fee with your application form. For online applications, payment can be made with Credit or Debit cards. When you make a payment online you will automatically receive a receipt via email. If you don’t have access to a Credit/Debit card you can still apply online by choosing payment option B. Simply send in your payment by cheque, Postal Order or Bank Draft (made payable to Waterford Institute of Technology) to our office within 10 working days of your online application. On receipt of your payment your application will be processed.
What is the national Framework of Qualifications The nFQ forms the basis of a new more flexible and integrated system of qualifications. The nFQ, through its ten levels, provides a means of comparing and contrasting national and international education and training qualifications. It helps learners to plan their education and training and employers to identify the qualifications they require.
Please Note: Cash payments are not accepted. Where employers are funding your fees, you are required to seek payment or reimbursement from your employer. WIT does not offer invoicing facilities. Is there any funding available for courses? As all adult education courses operate on a self-financing basis, you are required to pay your own tuition fees. For this reason we are offering a bursary to all applicants (circa 25% of the cost of the course) in receipt of either of these two welfare payments at the time of application. Please provide evidence of your payment by supplying your PPS number and signing the declaration which states that the information you are submitting is accurate and honest. your details will be verified by the Department of Social and Family Affairs. (Please see the reduced fees listed by programme in this prospectus under the heading 'Cost, if eligible for bursary'. This scheme will be subject to review at the end of the 2011 - 2012 academic year and does not apply to any of our part-time postgraduate programmes or professional and personal development courses.)
Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) entry levels to WIT There are three possible entry levels to WIT at undergraduate level: • Higher Certificate (Level 6) courses • Bachelor Degree (Level 7) courses • Honours Bachelor Degree (Level 8) courses Progression within WIT Students, who enter at any level, can either chose to graduate at that level or progress to the next level, assuming adequate grades are achieved. For example, a student enters WIT at Higher Certificate Level 6, they can chose either to graduate with a Higher Certificate after two years, or can progress on to Level 7 and beyond. Progression to a Postgraduate Qualification Students who complete an Honours Bachelor Degree at Level 8, often go on to do postgraduate study. More information on taught and research postgraduate options are available at www.wit.ie
• Tax Relief: People pursuing part-time courses leading to a Third-level qualification may be eligible for Tax Relief on their fees if paying from their own income. Registered employers may also be eligible to claim relief on course fees paid for employees. not so big that you can get lost, but also not so small that you feel centre stage.
Adult learning is a wonderful time to discover how much you already know through your own life experiences. On a personal level I have achieved
something that I had always wanted to do. I didn’t have the opportunity to go to college after school. It’s a great
feeling to know you’re never too old!!!
On a professional level my qualification has opened doors for me in the field of education, I am practising in a field that I am passionate about, and
without this qualification, I would not have this opportunity.

‘I chose the BA (Ord) in Applied Social Studies as I wanted to gain a qualification while remaining in work. The part-time
nature of the course was ideal, although it does require a lot of commitment. I thoroughly enjoyed the course, and found
it extremely interesting and beneficial both in a professional context and in general life.
The course has opened up new avenues of work for me, and
the work placements allowed me to gain experience in Social Care areas that I had not worked in previously.
I would recommend this course to anyone working in social
care without a third level qualification because it opens up many doors. As well as finding the course beneficial to my work, I enjoyed it immensely and found a huge sense of
fulfilment in learning new concepts. Finally completing a
degree has given me the confidence to go further both in my work and study.‘

The Higher Certificate in Arts in Advocacy Studies was designed by IT Sligo and is aimed at people who work as advocates or would like to develop their skills in this area. The WIT/IT Sligo initiative offers a real continuing professional development opportunity for people working in the field of advocacy. Advocacy is defined as representing others in areas where they required support, or representing persons who cannot represent themselves. Advocacy services go some way to redress the inequalities between the individual and large powerful organisations. For many years, informal advocacy has always existed but formal services are beginning to develop particularly in the disability area. As such it is away to ‘level the playing field’ for marginalised groups: it allows them to claim their entitlements and exercise choices; and protects their quality of life in circumstances where they may be dependent on services. Some separations are handled sensitively, and the emotional and psychological welfare of the children (and the parents) is protected. However, in a minority of cases, there may be a negative impact. The consequences for the child may be depression, low self-esteem, lower academic performance, leading to difficulties in later life. Parental alienation can take place when the children become antagonistic towards one or other parent. Our 'new Day' parenting course explores these problems, examines strategies to avoid them, and looks at ways to remedy them if counterproductive behaviours have already become established. On completion of this course, you will: • Have a comprehensive knowledge of the needs of children of divorced/separated parents. • Be familiar with the consequences of separation for children and parents. • Have acquired the skills to deal with the new parent/child relationship. • Have an understanding of the dynamics of the relationship with the other parent. • Have come to accept and deal with their own feelings about the separation. • Be able to use the process to enhance their own, and their children’s personal development. Among the topics covered will be: Child development, parenting styles, co-parenting, parental alienation, and blended families.
