NATIONAL FRAMEWORK OF QUALIFICATIONS What is the National Framework of Qualifications? The NFQ forms the basis of a new more flexible and integrated system of qualifications. The NFQ, through its ten levels, provides a means of comparing and contrasting national and international education and training qualifications. It helps learners to plan their education and training and employers to identify the qualifications they require.
Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) entry levels to WIT There are three possible entry levels to WIT at undergraduate level: • Higher Certificate (Level 6) courses • Bachelor Degree (Level 7) courses • Honours Bachelor Degree (Level 8) courses
Progression within WIT Students, who enter at any level, can either chose to graduate at that level or progress to the next level, assuming adequate grades are achieved. For example, a student enters WIT at Higher Certificate Level 6, can graduate with a Higher Certificate after two years and then chose to progress on to Level 7 and beyond.

Returning to education as a part-time student was the best decision I made. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a student as the course was flexible and allowed me to combine my studies with full-time work. The course was very interesting and it was very beneficial to study with students from different backgrounds. The lecturers were supportive and understood that many of us were combining study and workloads. Having successfully completed the Masters, I have progressed in my career because of the skills and knowledge gained through my studies. My life has completely changed, I have a job that I really enjoy. My advice to anyone considering becoming a parttime student is to go for it as you will be supported, encouraged and challenged. You will learn new skills and you will meet some fantastic people. Lindsay O’Brien MA in Teaching and Learning in Further and Higher Education (2012)

Gaining a qualification has given me greater confidence in my own ability to contribute at work. The BBS (Hons) gave me a broad knowledge of every aspect of business and helped me understand how my decision making affects the business as a whole. Returning to education can be daunting but I realised quickly that all my classmates were in the same boat. Completing my Degree was made easier with the support and encouragement of my classmates and lecturers. Adult students have a wealth of knowledge that they sometimes don’t even realise they have. Understanding different perspectives and practices really enriches your learning experience. Knowledge is addictive: once you start, you just want to keep learning and expanding your skills. My aim now is to complete a Masters Degree.

When I started the Higher Certificate in Engineering in Manufacturing Technology I was a little bit concerned about going back to education. However I quickly found that I was enjoying the course. The subjects were interesting and were delivered using engaging learning techniques which made it all the more enjoyable. I am now studying the BEng in Engineering in Manufacturing Engineering and found the progression from the Higher Certificate to be seamless. I plan to continue my part time study with the BSc (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering when I have finished my current course. I would say to anyone who is contemplating going back to education to just do it and not to get demotivated by the length of time it will take in order to gain your qualification. You might find that you start off in one course and end up having undertaken another when it is completed!

I originally started studying for the Higher Certificate in Science in Information Technology Support at WIT. As the course went on I gained confidence and wanted to continue to progress, so I completed the BSc IT (Level 7) degree and I am now studying for the BSc IT (Level 8). Initially I was unsure of how work and study would fit together but I have found studying at WIT very rewarding and the lecturers have been very helpful and responsive all along. The qualifications I have gotten have improved my understanding of IT and have helped me to advance in my career. I found going from one course to the next easier than I thought it would be. Working full time and studying part time is difficult and takes will power but it is very rewarding.

Studying at WIT opened up a whole new experience to me. While the challenge of third level study was tough at times, the support of the lecturers and my fellow classmates kept me going and helped me believe in myself. With this belief, I have enjoyed studying and researching different aspects relating to Social Care. As a mature student, it is challenging to organise your time especially if you are working and have family commitments. However, the confidence and the sense of achievement gained by completing an exam or assignment far outweigh the challenges. It is important to enjoy the experience and the new friendships you will make. If you’re a mature student thinking of studying at WIT, I think it is well worth the experience.

Where a teacher completes a qualification in primary teaching outside of Ireland and seeks registration in Ireland, the Teaching Council (Ireland) may register that teacher, subject to him/her satisfying the Irish Language Requirement. Marino Institute of Education (MIE) has devised approved programmes to fulfil this requirement - An Scrúdú le hAghaidh Cáilíochta sa Ghaeilge (SCG) or Oiriúnú le hAghaidh Cáilíochta sa Ghaeilge (OCG). Qualifying examinations in these include written papers, oral and aural examinations, class visits at the teachers’ school by MIE assessors and two fortnight periods attending (Department of Education and Science) approved courses in a recognised Coláiste Gaeltachta. All of these are to be successfully completed within a three year period. The two sessions in a Coláiste Gaeltachta are provided by Coláiste na Rinne i gContae Phort Láirge during mid-term school breaks. On successful completion of either the SCG or OCG Examination, Teachers Trained Abroad will be accepted as fully qualified to teach in Irish Primary Schools. Those preparing to qualify themselves by undertaking SCG/OCG courses should register with MIE and then enrol for an SCG/OCG course in Waterford Institute of Technology.
