General Information How do I apply? The easiest way to register is online at www.wit.ie/parttime. OpTION A: Apply and pay Online

Apply and pay the tuition fees by Laser/Credit Card. Payment is made through a secure payment facility and your account will be immediately debited.

Apply online and then print your details and post it with your payment (Cheque, Postal order, Bank Draft) within 10 working days. Your application will not be processed until payment has been received.

What are the entry requirements for courses? Each course has its own entry requirements so please refer to the relevant course information for more details. Whilst no formal certification of English is required, participants must ensure that they are proficient in both written and spoken English to successfully complete their course of choice.

What happens if a course is cancelled? Classes will run subject to sufficient enrolments and viability. If a course is undersubscribed, we will make every effort to offer students an alternative course or we will refund students the full tuition fee.

What is WIT’s refund policy? please Note: If you have registered for a course and cannot attend classes, you must contact the Adult Education Oﬃce, at least one week before the course start date (i) stating your intention to withdraw, and (ii) requesting a refund form. 20% of the fee will be deducted for administration costs. If you have attended more than one class, or If you do not notify us in writing prior to the start date, no refund will be given. For Undergraduate Students When do I apply? Applications will be accepted from 10 June - 16 August 2013 online. Registrations are processed on a first come first served basis so early application is recommended. please Note: First year undergraduate applicants must email a copy of their current CV and relevant qualifications to tlace@wit.ie following registration. please include the online application reference number and course title in the email subject field. Failure to do so may result in loss of place.

When do courses begin? All undergraduate courses are scheduled to start the week commencing Monday 9 September 2013. At the beginning of September 2013, students will receive confirmation of your course start date from the Adult Education oﬃce.

Where do lectures take place? The majority of lectures take place in either the Cork Road Campus or Browne’s Road Campus (Applied Technology Building). Classes may also take place in the College Street Campus.

Can I meet with lecturers? Course lecturers will be available to give advice at the Drop In Clinics, Monday 10 -Tuesday 11 June 2013, Cork Rd Campus. Drop in Clinics: Business, Education and Humanities - Monday 10 June 2013, 6-8pm Science, Engineering and IT - Tuesday 11 June 2013, 6-8pm

Will there be an Induction Evening? Part-time undergraduate students should attend an induction session prior to the commencement of the course. Information provided will support students through their educational journey and introduce students to resources available in WIT that will help students study more eﬀectively such as the library, Moodle etc. Induction sessions will run from 6-7pm Monday 9 - Thursday 12 September inclusive in the Auditorium, WIT Main Campus.

How can I get a student card? Once students are registered on a course, students should apply for a WIT Card, which is essential for students to access the library, IT, photocopying, canteen and shop facilities. The card costs €15 and is available from the WIT Card Oﬃce in the Cork Road Campus.

What is Recognition of Prior Learning? WIT acknowledges that adults bring a wide range of experience and knowledge to the classroom. In some instances, where adults can demonstrate that the quality and duration of their prior learning and experience is equivalent to the learning outcomes of course module(s), students may be entitled to gain an exemption(s). This is referred to as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

How can I apply for RPL? Full details of how to apply for RPL are available on the website www.wit.ie/parttime.

Blended Learning Blended learning describes a mix of classroom-based education and distance learning, often via online features that allow students to receive tailored help from tutors. WIT part time courses incorporate Moodle, a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), to support lecturers and students in creating eﬀective online learning communities. All registered WIT staﬀ and students can access Moodle using their WIT username and password. Moodle is used by lecturers to share course material with students and to post class announcements. It also includes other useful features such as virtual classrooms, discussion forums, surveys and much more that may be used in course delivery.

When will my exams take place? Exams may be held anytime between 9am to 10pm Monday to Saturday inclusive.

MONEY MATTERS Instalment Plan Facility If students have diﬃculty in paying the full fees on application, they may wish to avail of the instalment facility (available to undergraduate students only). When students register, they must agree and accept the terms and conditions. If students fail to meet these terms and conditions WIT reserves the right to withhold certain student facilities and privileges.

Is there any funding available for courses? As all adult education courses operate on a self-financing basis, students are required to pay their own tuition fees. The following supports may be worth considering: • WIT Bursary for the Unemployed and One parent Families We encourage those in receipt of Jobseeker's Allowance, Jobseeker’s Benefit or One Parent Family Allowance to apply as part time students to WIT in order to improve their employment prospects. For this reason we are offering a bursary to all applicants (circa 25% of the cost of the course) in receipt of any of these three welfare payments at the time of application. There is a bursary price for the majority of undergraduate part time courses. Please provide evidence of your eligibility by supplying your PPS number and signing the declaration which states that the information submitted is accurate and honest. Your details will be verified by the Department of Social and Family Affairs. (Please see the reduced fees listed by programme in this prospectus under the heading 'Cost, if eligible for bursary scheme'. This scheme will be subject to review at the end of the 2013/2014 academic year and does not apply to any of our part-time postgraduate programmes or professional and personal development courses.) • Tax Relief People pursuing part-time courses leading to a Third-level qualification may be eligible for Tax Relief on their fees if paying from their own income. NATIONAL FRAMEWORK OF QUALIFICATIONS What is the National Framework of Qualifications? The NFQ forms the basis of a new more flexible and integrated system of qualifications. The NFQ, through its ten levels, provides a means of comparing and contrasting national and international education and training qualifications. It helps learners to plan their education and training and employers to identify the qualifications they require.

Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) entry levels to WIT There are three possible entry levels to WIT at undergraduate level: • Higher Certificate (Level 6) courses • Bachelor Degree (Level 7) courses • Honours Bachelor Degree (Level 8) courses

Progression within WIT Students, who enter at any level, can either chose to graduate at that level or progress to the next level, assuming adequate grades are achieved. For example, a student enters WIT at Higher Certificate Level 6, can graduate with a Higher Certificate after two years and then chose to progress on to Level 7 and beyond.

Progression to a Postgraduate Qualification

University of the Third Age Initiative In conjunction with the University of the Third Age (U3A), two places on selected Personal Development courses will be oﬀered with a 25% reduction in courses fees for applicants over the age of 55. Students must submit proof of age with their application. The first two applications for each course will receive the discount and courses are run subject to viability. U3A is an international network of self-help organisations for older people. It is run entirely by volunteers. The U3A approach to learning is - “learning for pleasure”. Returning to education as a part-time student was the best decision I made. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a student as the course was flexible and allowed me to combine my studies with full-time work. The course was very interesting and it was very beneficial to study with students from different backgrounds. The lecturers were supportive and understood that many of us were combining study and workloads. Having successfully completed the Masters, I have progressed in my career because of the skills and knowledge gained through my studies. Gaining a qualification has given me greater confidence in my own ability to contribute at work. The BBS (Hons) gave me a broad knowledge of every aspect of business and helped me understand how my decision making affects the business as a whole. Returning to education can be daunting but I realised quickly that all my classmates were in the same boat. Completing my Degree was made easier with the support and encouragement of my classmates and lecturers. Adult students have a wealth of knowledge that they sometimes donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even realise they have. Understanding different perspectives and practices really enriches your learning experience. Knowledge is addictive: once you start, you just want to keep learning and expanding your skills. When I started the Higher Certificate in Engineering in Manufacturing Technology I was a little bit concerned about going back to education. However I quickly found that I was enjoying the course. The subjects were interesting and were delivered using engaging learning techniques which made it all the more enjoyable. I am now studying the BEng in Engineering in Manufacturing Engineering and found the progression from the Higher Certificate to be seamless. I plan to continue my part time study with the BSc (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering when I have finished my current course. I would say to anyone who is contemplating going back to education to just do it and not to get demotivated by the length of time it will take in order to gain your qualification. You might find that you start off in one course and end up having undertaken another when it is completed!

I originally started studying for the Higher Certificate in Science in Information Technology Support at WIT. As the course went on I gained confidence and wanted to continue to progress, so I completed the BSc IT (Level 7) degree and I am now studying for the BSc IT (Level 8). Initially I was unsure of how work and study would fit together but I have found studying at WIT very rewarding and the lecturers have been very helpful and responsive all along. The qualifications I have gotten have improved my understanding of IT and have helped me to advance in my career. I found going from one course to the next easier than I thought it would be. Working full time and studying part time is difficult and takes will power but it is very rewarding.

The BSc (Hons) in Applied Biology with Quality Management is an “add-on” honours degree course for students with an ordinary BSc in Biotechnology or equivalent Level 7 course. There is a major emphasis on molecular biology, quality methodologies and bio-analytical methods used in the pharmaceutical and food industries. The course is not currently oﬀered at night, but students wishing to study part-time take modules from the full time course and attend classes during the day with full time students. As far as possible, the timetable is arranged so that a student can attend WIT for 2 half days per week, though significant independent study is expected. Normally it takes 2 years to complete, taken in this mode. The research project is a practical module, the student can choose to do it through their work, if appropriate, or do it in WIT laboratories. Course Structure Modules are taught in two semesters each year as shown below, but on a part time basis they are spread over two years. Semester 1 1. Regulatory Aﬀairs and Compliance 2. CERTIFICATE IN GROUp FITNESS INSTRUCTION Special Purpose Award (10 credits) These linked courses aim to provide students with entry-level industry recognised qualifications in health-fitness instruction. The 20 credit Certificate in Fitness Instruction prepares students to work on a one-to-one basis with customers in gym settings, designing aerobic, resistance and weight loss programmes. The 10 credit Certificate in Group Fitness Instruction prepares students to lead and choreograph group exercise classes in exercise to music, step aerobics, body conditioning and circuit training. Fitness instruction courses at Waterford Institute of Technology are accredited by REPS Ireland, www.repsireland.ie Course Structure Both of these part-time courses will be delivered at weekends over the course of one academic year. The Certificate in Fitness Instruction will be delivered over 10 weekends, the Certificate in Group Fitness Instruction over 7 weekends. Extracts from works by well-known authors are examined and discussed in class with a particular focus on important elements such as themes, characterisations, development of plot etc. Specific exercises in class will help you begin writing your own stories and poems. These exercises are an enjoyable way of getting started when confronted with that threatening blank page. You are then invited to share their work with the rest of the group.
