WANT TO BE ON THE BOARD?

By Elections Committee The 44th Annual Meeting of the Watergate at Landmark Condominium Unit Owners Association will be held on Monday, March 1, 2021. Four positions will be filled on the Board of Directors (BOD). At that meeting, three candidates with the highest percentage of votes will be elected to three-year terms and one candidate with the next highest percentage of votes will be elected to a one-year term on the BOD. Any qualified owner may run for a position.

How Do I Become a Candidate?

Pick up and complete an official nominating petition from Resident Services located in the Community Center. Petitions must include your name, building and unit number, phone number and signature. Your petition must be endorsed by at least 10 unit owners and you are encouraged to get more signatures in case some are proven to be invalid.

Only one owner’s signature per unit is allowed. With your petition, attach a signed autobiographical document and a campaign statement not to exceed 300 words per document.

Saturday, December 19, 2020 The deadline for filing nominating petitions to become a candidate for the Board of Directors is at Noon (12 p.m.) on this day. Candidates also will meet virtually with the Elections Committee to validate all petitions and to determine each candidate’s position on the ballot.

Tuesday, February 9, 2021 A formal “Virtual Meet the Candidates” Town Hall will be held at 7:30 p.m. to provide an opportunity to hear all candidates present their views.

Monday, March 1, 2021 The Annual Meeting and Elections will be held on this evening.

WATERGATE ROUND-UP

This month is the start of the holiday season as we gather with our friends and family. Many families may not have live gatherings but they’ll connect via social media and virtual events to celebrate in this “new normal”. So, no matter how you celebrate and give thanks, the Board of Directors wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Normally, the Association has a wonderful dinner and social event to honor our Veterans. However, as a precautionary measure against COVID, this year there will be no Veteran-related gathering or program with speeches at WAL. Please do remember, however, to honor our Veterans on November 11. You can read about some who live at WAL on page 8.

Package Delivery

Over the past two months, there has been much discussion about package delivery service providers leaving packages in our building and floor lobbies. As our economy shifts to home delivery, this is a situation that will continue to impact WAL. While many packages are delivered by the vendor to your door, there has been an increase in delivery people dropping packages off in the lobbies despite signs prohibiting such and instructions provided to them by Patrol Service Officers at the Front Gate.

Package delivery is a complex issue. Should the Association implement more actions than our current efforts to dissuade vendors from leaving packages in the lobbies, it will require additional Association funds and increased personnel. Package deliveries are contracts between you and the company you purchase the item from. I encourage you to contact that company and submit a complaint if the package is not delivered correctly.

Balcony Policies

Balcony coverings (rugs, planks, or other material) are not permitted at WAL. I’ve seen some very creative ways residents are covering the balcony floors. Although they look attractive, they actually degrade the floor and are not authorized by our policies.

To add to the discussion about balcony coverings, please do not drill into the ceiling or flooring of the balcony. This

Don’t let the water escape over the edge. These past few months I’ve seen an increase in resident complaints concerning water flowing from above balconies.

Contract Updates

Metropolitan Water’s contract for Fiscal Year 2021 was approved for $66,625 and is now in effect. This water conservation contract benefits you by providing free service calls, parts for maintaining your toilets flush mechanism and keeping valves in working order. Toilets can constantly run if left unchecked so by scheduling a checkup of your system, it helps reduce WAL’s monthly water bill, conserve the budget and protect the environment. Please schedule an appointment today to have your toilets checked before they break down.

The HVAC Utility Closet Façade/Vent Renovation Project for Bldg. 3 was approved. The $2.8 million contract with EV-Airtight Shoemaker allows the Association to complete the final phase of this project. Work will start in June 2021 and end in February 2023. ETC engineering and technical consulting was chosen for professional engineering services and design work.

“SHOWTIME” AT WATERGATE

RECOLLECTIONS OF WAL’S 1980S VARIETY SHOWS

By Lynda Soady How many residents remember Watergate’s variety shows from the 80’s? I’d love to share some memories with newer residents who think some of us here are ‘old.’ Believe me when I tell you we knew how to party back then! We may move a bit slower now but remember, 80 is the new 40 and you never forget how to have fun!

Digging for Memories

I had a few photos of the Variety Show and called my long -time friend Jan Ayton to see what she had. We were both original owners in Building 3 in 1978. During the pandemic, she sorted through papers and found ‘lots of stuff’ from those days. We sat outside on the patio and had so much fun looking at her memorabilia. We chatted about how we’d rehearse our dance routines until 9 p.m., freshen up and then head to Bronco Billy’s on Connecticut Ave. in DC for some country western dancing until midnight, only to go to work the next day! Ah, to be young and single!

Jan had a few old WAL Wheels. There were four variety shows in the 1980s. Jan still had a 1981 program of The Watergate Review, a poolside Variety Show. There wasn’t a chorus line that year. One of the many performers who

lives here was Michele Titi who sang “Sunrise, Sunset”.

Jan and I signed up to be in the chorus line for the Variety Show for February 1982. There were nine of us who danced to “If My Friends Could See Me Now” and “Fame.” Christa Lotesoriere, who also still lives here, sang “Edelweiss.”

You might not remember the Richard Rogers tune but you've heard it if you remember Captain von Trapp belting the lyrics as he played the guitar in The Sound of Music.

Broadway Had Nothing on WAL! Jan had the 1983 Wheel with an article about the Variety Show held on March 5 - 6, 1983. The Racquet Club was miraculously converted into a beautiful cabaret with all the excitement that is live theater. It was not in the District, not in Atlantic City and not on 42nd Street—but right in our own backyard! There was a 3 p.m. Sunday Matinee and also an evening show with two cash bars, BYOB, wine available for purchase by the bottle and dancing afterwards. Tickets were $7.50 and there was a full house!

WAL resident Carol Lagasse’s late husband Harvey produced and directed these shows. Gene Singleton oversaw the chorus line’s choreography. I can still hear him say during rehearsal, “Ladies, use your bodies!” I’m sure we were a challenge. Carol and Gene tap danced to “Tea for Two.” Leon Klein was the photographer of Watergate

events back in the day when cameras used film. We put on our costumes for a photo shoot only to learn afterward that he had no film in the camera! Oh dear!

Our chorus line did two routines to “Hey Big Spender” and “New York, New York.” There were vocalists, country western dance routines, tap and Broadway dancers, hillbilly bands and comedy. Christa sang “Lili Marlene” with her sultry German voice.

The show was a highlight of the summer activities and the event was sold out! It takes courage to wear a bikini covered with a sarong and dance before the entire community.

How special it was to remember fun times! I challenge someone to write about the New Year’s Eve parties at the Racquet Club. Carole Lagasse remembered one year it was turned into a beautiful night club atmosphere complete with an orchestra in an orchestra pit! She thought the food was catered by Marriott and the WAL shuttle provided transport service. It probably snowed too. I can’t wait to read more

USAF Sergeant (E-4)

USAF, Lt. Colonel (Ret.)

I was a Medical Administrative Specialist stationed in CA and later in Italy. I was honorably discharged after serving from November 1977 – September 1983. I loved being in the Air Force and I regret getting out early every day. I miss the comradery, the travel, the organization and belonging to the military. It truly was a great way of life.

USAF Airman First Class I served during Vietnam. I remember one time I was taxiing an aircraft on the runway.

The Air Force One hanger was next to the one where I worked. The rule is that any aircraft that wants to come on the active runway needed to wait until the other plane cleared. It just so happened on that day, AF One was the special plane waiting for me to taxi. Sorry, Mr. President, you had to wait for an 18year-old kid to clear the runway first!

USAF Sergeant

I am an original homeowner and came to WAL when it opened in 1975. I have chaired the Senior Committee and served on the WAL Board of Directors. I participated in other events and meetings at WAL. I am the author of the book Determination: The Story of a Black Woman Growing Up and Becoming a Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force.

USAF, Lt. Colonel, (Ret.) I am a 28-year veteran and was an Air Combat Command Operations Branch Chief. I also commanded the 250-member 606th Tactical Air Control Squadron in Germany; led the E-3 Airborne Warning and Control Wing aircrew training programs; and, performed flight duties in different leadership roles on-board the E-3. Over the course of my career, I did several tours in Europe and the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia where I was the Joint Air Operations Center Air Space Director. I am a member of the Program Management Institute; Association of Old Crows; and, Air Force Academy Association of Graduates.

I was a sergeant in the Air Force in 1950 – 1953 during the Korean War. I was a new immigrant, not yet a citizen, and considered my service an honor. Thank you, America, for giving me a country to love and a uniform to wear with pride. I remember how much the little kids in the family loved to play with my Air Force hat.

USAF, First Sergeant, (Ret.) It was a privilege to serve 28 years of active and reserve time. My major commands were in the U. S. Air Force Security Service and the RED HORSE engineer squadron.

Major, USAF (Ret.) I served 20 years in the Air Force, including two years in Vietnam.

Among many rewarding experiences during my 22-year career, the most important one was meeting my wife to be at a Department of Defense school in Landstuhl, Germany. We married in Endicott, NY 44 years ago.

USA, Lt. Colonel (Ret.)

USMC, Corporal (E-4)

After graduating from West Point, I became an infantry officer. I served in the 82nd Airborne Division in Ft. Bragg, NC, the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea and the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam I did three tours in Vietnam during the war there. It is an honor to be able to serve my country. I did so for 26 years in the Army.

USA, Major (Ret.) I was a Logistics Officer in the 501st MI Brigade. Here is a picture of me while in Korea in 1992. I retired from the Army in 1995.

USA, Lt. Colonel (Ret.) I served in the Army Corps of Engineers in many assignments including company commander at Ft. Belvoir, VA; panel bridge company commander in Korea; and two tours in Italy as a post engineer and later as executive officer and commander of a topographic battalion with mapping projects in Ethiopia, Iran, and Liberia. I also did two tours in Vietnam, the first in a combat engineer battalion and construction group and the second as a staff officer and adviser. I taught classes at the Engineer School at Ft. Belvoir, Texas A&M and Marquette U. I still serve as a visiting scholar at the Army Center of Military History. Among my writings is a volume in the official Vietnam War series titled Engineers at War.

USMC, CWO2 (Ret.) I was in the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion during the war in North Korea, I became one of the Chosin Few. I walked through snow and ice for over 100 km. I was awarded a Purple Heart Medal.

I served during the Vietnam era with the 1st Marine Air Wing in Iwakuni, Japan as a Radio Relay Technician.

USCG, Commander (Ret.) I was stationed on a U.S. Coast Guard Buoy Tender in Vietnam. In mid-1970, we were dispatched to an uninhabited island off the west coast of Vietnam to find a French position marker and install a radio transponder that the Navy could use to precisely triangulate their position for gunnery support to troops on the mainland.

When we arrived, there wasn’t a path to the top of the hill so we had to cut our way through. Hours later, we made it to the top and could not find anything that looked like a marker. We took a short break to eat. I found a flat rock and sat on it. After a few minutes, we all got up to continue looking around. I glanced down and saw that the “flat rock” I was sitting on was indeed the French marker. There was quite a bit of laughter about how I found it. It took me a while to live this down!

Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard (MCPOCG) Four days after graduating from high school in 1972, I joined the U.S. Coast Guard at age 17. During my career, I served aboard three ships and sailed in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Caribbean waters. I had a great 30-year career, retiring in 2002 as MCPOCG, the highest ranking enlisted leader in the Coast Guard. This particular rank can only be held by one member of the Coast Guard at a time.

The Coast Guard taught me a lot about being a responsible citizen and participating in the defense and security of our great nation. I'm proud of my service to this country and I’m glad to have served with great people. I’d do it all over again if I could!

USN, Coxwain of the Captain Gig, 3rd Class With my father’s signature, I joined the Navy at 17 years old. After many battles aboard the U.S.S. Battleship Texas during WW2, I was under captain’s orders at Omaha Beach, Normandy, France to hit the beach aboard the captain’s gig (a small boat) to save wounded Rangers shot by the enemy. I saved 32 wounded Rangers, taking them back to the hospital quarters on the Battleship Texas through choppy waters. I also witnessed our American flag being raised on Iwo Jima.

USN, Lt. Commander (Ret.) This is what being a Veteran means to me: to know that I served and to better appreciate those who are serving and sacrificing for us today. I received a Navy Commendation Medal from Vice Admiral Jerry Tuttle (on the left in the picture below) in 1993.

USN Captain, Ret. I am the first black female line officer to become both a Commander and Captain in the Navy. The best moment of my life and career was when my mom pinned my shoulder boards on me. During my 27 years of service, I received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal and the National Defense Medal.

The training in the Navy is outstanding. Many of the people you meet during your career are friends for a lifetime.

On May 17, 2019, I received the “Knight in the Order of the French Legion Medal of Honor”.

It was a sold-out crowd gathered on a Sunday afternoon and the local electric Chicago blues band led by Roger Hart did not disappoint! The event sponsored by the Social Committee allowed residents to enjoy a bit of outdoor fun and comradery before fall’s crisp, cool weather settled in.

A SPOOKY GOOD TIME

By Zohreh Khoshnamak, Youth Committee Much has changed in the past six months, yet we continue to try to keep life as normal as possible, especially for WAL kids. COVID-19 notwithstanding, the WAL Science Club and the Youth Committee held the Fourth Annual Spooky Mad Science Expo on Saturday, October 17.

The weather forecast was predicted to be windy and chilly but it turned out to be a gorgeous, sunny and beautiful day. It gave our kids the opportunity to have some muchneeded fun together, celebrating science and Halloween after a long time in quarantine. The Expo observed the City of Alexandria’s COVID-19 regulations. Temperatures were taken at the entrance and masks were mandatory; all our kids wore them and hand sanitizer was at every station.

Many of the organizations which usually joined our event were unable to participate due to government regulations.

Yet, we had new ones step in and they, along with WAL parents, helped us hold an amazing event. I want to thank the American Institute of Architects (AIA), American Chemical Society of Washington (ACS), TC Williams’ Robotics Team and all the WAL youth, teens and adults who volunteered.

The Science Club distributed over $1000 worth of books donated by national organizations to attendees. They also got bags of snacks and candy donated by our neighbors, Youth Committee and WAL since there isn’t any Trick or Treating in our community this year.

The kids and parents had a great time. We look forward to continuing this event in the spring—without all the restrictions and precautions.
