Changing with the Times What is Arbor Day? Arbor Day is observed annually to celebrate the importance of trees and to promote and encourage proper planting and care of trees in our residential landscapes, public parks and gardens, and throughout our communities. It was first observed in 1872 in the state of Nebraska, but tree planting festivals are centuries old. Throughout history and in literature trees have symbolized life but unlike other holidays which remember the past, Arbor Day gives hope for the future. Trees planted on Arbor Day show a concern for future generations who will benefit from their shade, beauty, and inspiration. This year the celebration of Arbor Day on April 26th happens to fall within Earth Week and just after Earth Day on the 22nd. Planting a tree is a simple way to improve our earth and to provide benefits to you, your family, and your neighborhood. These advantages include aesthetic beauty, wildlife habitat, landscape value, shelter from wind and sun, and erosion control. Planting a tree is also the perfect way to honor or memorialize a loved one. If you are uncertain of how to choose the right tree for your location, our knowledgeable staff can help you with the right selection for the right spot and advise you on planting and watering tips to ensure your tree’s success!

We are going to be communicating with you more via email, and less with regular mail. This includes our ‘Garden Gate’ newsletter, which will eventually be published electronically. We encourage you to sign up for our email to stay in touch with us and receive coupons, new product notices, classes, events, tips, and more. Color Your Garden with Spring Shrubs & Perennials Gardening can be a source of great enjoyment and relaxation. Many a gardener has said that they do their best thinking while digging in the dirt and some of the simplest pleasures arise in a pleasing combination of color. Whether you prefer formal and structured gardens or love a hodge-podge of treasured plants, you can have your own particular piece of heaven. Ageratum

Frost Hardy Annuals for Early Spring Planting Every spring we are anxious to get started adding color to our gardens after the dreary winter. Keep in mind that the danger of frost lasts at least through the first of May and sometimes surprises us even a little later than Mother’s Day. If you just can’t wait to get started, be sure to select frost hardy annuals for your garden beds or containers. The hardiest include pansies and violas, snapdragons, dianthus, and alyssum. Annuals which are able to handle a light frost include varieties of petunia, nicotiana, Victoria sage, and calendula. Asters, ageratum, geraniums, and lobelia will tolerate cold temperatures but not direct frost.

Having groupings of dependable plants that require little yet yield a lot are usually the best investments for your garden. While annuals add valuable punches of color in garden beds and containers, perennials and flowering shrubs come back every year to put on their show. Perennial plants flower annually and, once established, provide seasonal interest year after year. The vast ranges of color, form, and texture that are available give you many potential combinations to liven up an otherwise dull spot in your yard or simply add interest to your home. After a long, dreary winter like the one we have experienced, the new growth that emerges with the coming of spring is exciting even to the most experienced gardener. Here are just a few suggestions of some dependable perennials and shrubs that are sure to make you smile. Shrubs: ‘Mellow Yellow’ Spiraea, ‘Magic Carpet’ Spiraea, Knock Out Rose, Deutzia, Azalea (evergreen and deciduous) Perennials: Candytuft, Forget-Me-Not, Columbine, Creeping Phlox, Dianthus

Be sure to be prepared to cover if necessary. Frost cloth or an old bed sheet works well. Just remember to secure with a few bricks or rocks to keep in place.

For all the Do-It-Yourselfers Out There: Tips on How to Plant a Containerized Tree

Small Beauties that Pack a Lot of Punch!

• When transplanting your tree, be sure to keep soil around the roots. This will help keep the roots from drying out. Always handle your tree by the root ball, not by the trunk or branches. Help prevent root girdling by vertically cutting any roots that show tendencies to circle the root ball.

Alpine plants are small, tough, and resilient, having naturally evolved to cope with the extremely tough conditions that exist in high mountain regions. Their classic use is in a traditional rock garden, but they can be used in many other places such as gravel gardens, containers, edging to a perennial border, or tucked into dry stone walls, walkways, or patios. Our favorite way to grow alpines is to create a miniature garden with a natural, stone-like trough that can be enjoyed on a balcony, patio table, rooftop garden, or any other relaxing setting!

• If a tree is planted correctly, it will grow twice as fast and live at least twice as long as one that is incorrectly planted. Dig an area as deep as the soil depth in the container and 2-3 times the diameter of the root ball. • After placing the tree in the hole, pack soil (mixed with soil amendments to improve existing soil) firmly around the root ball. Water slowly and thoroughly so the entire root system gets water, and mulch a 3’ circle around the tree. Mulch should not touch the tree’s trunk or be piled higher than 3”.

Not a Do-It-Yourselfer? Or Is That Tree Too Big? Let Us Help! Although many of the trees sold here at Waterloo Gardens are in 15 gallon containers, we also carry larger specimen trees to give your landscape more immediate impact. These are typically sold as B&B, which means balled & burlapped. We know most of our customers don’t have the ability to transport and plant these types of trees, so we are happy to offer delivery and planting services for your convenience. And of course, this service applies to any size shrub or tree purchased at Waterloo Gardens. Please talk to someone from our nursery staff if you are considering having plants delivered, or delivered and planted for you.

These tough but adorable alpine plants should be arriving in early April, along with a wide selection of alpine troughs in varying shapes and sizes from which to choose. Since alpines require excellent drainage, we will also be carrying a specialized soil mixture to help ensure the success of your garden.

Spring Essentials

Next Step: Mulching! Once the job of planting is over, don’t forget one very important step: mulching! Mulch is best friends with trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals. It holds down competing weeds or grass, retains moisture (especially beneficial once the hot weather rolls around), and prevents soil cracking that can damage new roots on young trees. Mulch also protects the trunk of a tree from lawnmower damage, and helps prevent soil compaction. We have a variety of mulches available. Our knowledgeable team members will help you select which mulch is best for your gardening area.
