Gardening Pleasures Tropical Plants for Your Outdoor Paradise Tropical plants love this summer weather. Consistent warmth and humidity is just what they need to thrive. Hibiscus, Mandevilla, Bougainvillea, and Jasmine are increasing in size and blooming beautifully.
Mandevilla
Watering 101 Gardening is not an exact science and we never really know just what the weather will bring from season to season or even day to day. We are certain however, that the most common cause of plant loss is either a lack of water, or in some instances, overwatering. Plants have different moisture needs when they are first planted than when they become well established; and the way you water nursery stock (trees and shrubs) will be nothing like watering annuals or perennials.
Bougainvillea
Nursery plants need to develop a deep root system to sustain the foliage and flowers they will produce for many years. Consequently, trees and shrubs should be deeply watered every few days when planted and then regularly throughout the first year until well established. Frequent shallow watering causes roots to reach for surface water. The root system never develops well and that results in a failing plant. Perennials and annuals have much more shallow roots and need more frequent water as they acclimate to your garden. With good care, perennials will eventually become quite self sufficient. Annuals on the other hand will need regular watering to support their new foliage growth and flower production throughout the season. Please talk to one of our plant experts for tips on watering your plants. We cannot live without sufficient water and neither can your plants!

Made in the Shade
If you have never grown one of these amazing flowering tropicals before, be sure to find a spot this year on your sunny deck or patio. Plant it in a beautiful container and you will have a summer of enjoyment. Each of these plants bloom continuously until autumn frost and most can be brought indoors to survive if you are up for a little work. At Waterloo Gardens, most of our tropical plants are brought up from Florida as soon as they can survive outdoors. Stop by today and ask one of our greenhouse experts to help you select the perfect patio tropic. You will be back year after year, each time summer begins!
Delivery & Planting Service Available !
Temperatures are rising and before long we will be longing for refreshing breezes under the shade of a large tree. Shade trees add value to any home. Not only do they provide obvious relief from the summer heat but they help cool indoor rooms as well. Nothing has the stature in the landscape as a shade tree and many boast beautiful fall foliage for seasonal interest. Maple and oak are commonly seen in our region, but at Waterloo Gardens we also carry Black Gum, Princeton Elm, Linden, and London Plane as well as other less known but beautiful large growing trees perfect for shade on hot humid days. Ask a sales associate for help in selecting an ideal tree for your home. While you are here, take a look at the many options for outdoor seating available in our furniture showroom.

June is Magnificent in the Garden
June is a magnificent month in the garden with many flowering shrubs in bloom and perennials making a grand appearance. On its own any flowering plant adds color interest, but when used in combination with complementary or contrasting plants your garden becomes alive. No one can deny that the introduction of Knock Out Roses, which bloom from late spring into mid fall, has changed the way even a novice gardener thinks about roses. Add salvia ‘Caradonna,’ gaura ‘Whirling Butterflies,’ or geranium ‘Rozanne’ and now you have really created something. The differences in height, in color, and in texture add interest that would not otherwise exist, and you have increased the impact of both your choices by the interplay of two plants together. Soon you will be layering your garden with even more combinations because you will find that curious garden secret that plants need each other to look their best. In a way it is like a great marriage, one partner being incomplete without the other. Another lovely flowering shrub has been rediscovered in recent years with the introduction of repeat blooming hydrangeas. Most of the excitement has been in the snowball or lacecap types which bloom in shades of pink, blue, and white and almost always require protection from the afternoon sun. Their large medium green leaves and round flowers are complemented beautifully by the fern-like texture and spiking flowers of astilbe. The range of foliage color in coral bells adds immediate interest when you choose burgundy, peach, or chartreuse varieties. Add another even shorter layer with lamium, ajuga, sweet woodruff, or creeping jenny. Always select plants that have the same sun, soil, and watering requirements and be sure that you have the right amount of space for the choices you make. When you think of combining plants be sure to consider the height, the texture, and the color of each of your choices and limit the varieties to two or three depending on the size of your space. Groupings of plants are far more pleasing than many varieties together which can cause your garden to look messy and disorganized. At Waterloo Gardens we are interested in your gardening success and love to make this process of selection easy for you. Be sure to visit us frequently this month when we are alive with color. Whether you are a novice or experienced gardener, share some time with us and make your garden better than you ever dreamed!
Tips on Tomatoes Now that your tomatoes are planted and are growing quickly there are a few things you can do for success: • If you have not done so already, mulch. It conserves water and prevents the soil and soil born diseases from splashing up on the plants. Black plastic works well for heat loving plants like tomatoes. • When your tomatoes are about three feet tall, remove the leaves from the bottom one foot of the stem. These are usually the first leaves to develop fungus problems. • Remove suckers that develop in the crotch joint of the two branches. These will not bear fruit and they take energy away from the rest of the plant. Resist additional pruning of the plant unless you want to thin some leaves to allow sunlight to reach ripening fruit. The leaves are where photosynthesis occurs and that creates sugar which gives flavor to your tomatoes. • Feed your tomato plant with Espoma Tomato-tone 3-4-6. Tomato-tone provides extra calcium to help prevent blossom end-rot. Tomato-tone will not force rapid growth at the expense of blooms and tomato yield. If you did not find time to plant tomatoes yet, you will find some sizeable plants in our greenhouse which will still have time to bear fruit this season. Ask for some tips on planting your tomatoes in a container or within your vegetable garden.

As a family-owned business in our 71st year of service to our community, Waterloo Gardens understands the benefits of hands-on family involvement. The commitment to quality is a personal matter. When we were planning our indoor furniture presentation, we were cognizant of this thread of family pride and sought out companies that matched our commitment to quality. C. R. Laine is a third generation family-owned and operated manufacturer of upholstered furniture from Hickory, NC. Their attention to detail is revealed in the pattern matching and tailoring. The seating pieces consist of rows of eight-way hand tied double cone steel coil springs positioned within the frame which are supported by a platform of poly webbing and steel bands. Artisans then tie each coil to the frame with premium nosqueak twine at eight separate points, creating C.R. Laine’s signature comfortable seating. Their commitment to quality is reinforced by a lifetime warranty on the frame. Founded in May 1972 by Angelo and Christina Marzilli, Decor-Rest Furniture Limited continues under their sole Canadian ownership and hands-on direction. Decor-Rest has grown to a position of prominence in Canada and is gaining recognition internationally for dedication to outstanding product and caring service. As a team, they take pride in their product, always mindful of the families whose lifestyles will be enhanced through their search for excellence. We share this commitment to quality because we know that your pride in ownership will be enhanced and we hope you will spread the word.

Houseplant Spotlight: Austral Gem Fern: The No Fuss Fern Do you have a black thumb but still have that yearning for green in your home? Ferns can offer a soft, inviting touch to your living space. Here is why the Austral Gem Fern has really caught our eye. Aside from it being a beautiful, full-bodied fern, this gem is very low maintenance and can adapt to an array of lighting conditions, from full shade to bright indirect light. The glossy and almost waxy dark green exterior of its fronds help to prevent the fern from drying out quickly as well as messy shedding like many ferns will do. Developed in Australia, it is a relatively new fern to our area, but people are quickly catching on to this effortless upkeep. It is the ultimate no-fuss fern for your home!
