Have Fun with Annuals When learning about gardening, it is easy to confuse annuals and perennials. A true perennial plant will go into dormancy in mid to late fall, survive the winter, and come back up in the spring when the temperatures are warm once again. Most perennials have a limited bloom time. Annuals, on the other hand, survive only spring and summer but provide color from the moment they begin blooming until the autumn frosts. So for both types of blooming plants there is definitely a place in the garden! Annuals really hit their stride late spring and summer and it is hard to go wrong either with varieties or colors. There is such a wide selection of annual flower color that you can change your color scheme from year to year. To create a visually appealing garden your choices are important. Here are a few tips: • Cool colors such as blue, violet, pink, and pastel shades work well for close up viewing. They can be used to create a serene, relaxing retreat. Warm colors like red, orange, and golden yellow have dramatic impact even when viewed from a distance. You can achieve a more lively, energetic atmosphere with these colors. • Be careful of using cool and warm colors in combination. If your garden choices are predominantly cool colors, a mass of orange zinnias or marigolds in the background will take away from the beauty you are creating. By sticking to one color scheme of only a few colors, you can create a stronger impact in your garden. Keep it simple! • Spectacular blooms are eye catching, but do not ignore foliage texture and color. Coleus, which comes in an amazing array of colors, can be just what you are looking for in your garden beds. Whatever you decide for color and interest, have fun with annuals and remember to choose the right flower for your sun conditions. For any questions, please ask one of our greenhouse experts. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Exciting Times in the Garden Container Gardening has Exploded in Popularity Interest in container gardening has exploded in recent years. And why not, it is so much fun! Container gardens can be used just about everywhere. You can grow annuals, perennials, and even trees and shrubs. Herbs, grasses, and vegetables make perfect container plantings as well. Choose a spectacular ceramic pot, simple terra cotta, or inexpensive lightweight plastic. All make a perfectly good container. Or find something around the house that you don’t use, a unique piece. As long as it can be filled with soil and has good drainage, you are good to go!

Now is the Time to Feed Your Plants!

Combine tall growing, medium-sized, and trailing plants for a layered effect and remember to limit your choices. Too many different plant and color choices make your containers look disorganized and messy.

Espoma organic plant foods provide your garden with the balanced meal it deserves. They are a complex blend of long lasting natural ingredients enhanced with Bio-tone beneficial microbes.

You can create visual interest by arranging a grouping of three or more containers with a similar theme of flower color or type of plants like veggies and herbs.

Each ‘tone’ has been carefully developed in conjunction with nursery and horticultural professionals to produce outstanding flowers, shrubs, and vegetables. There are no fillers, sludge, or inert ingredients. We recommend Espoma because quality is guaranteed.

The sky is the limit. Have fun this year because you don’t have to let space issues keep you from the enjoyment of growing your own plants!

• Long lasting natural organics break down slowly for steady, continuous feeding • Contains Bio-tone microbes • Adds organic matter to soil

Create a tropical paradise on your patio by adding containers of exotic tropical flowering plants. Tropical patio plants command attention on any deck, patio, or outdoor room. They thrive in almost any container that is large enough and sturdy enough to accommodate top heavy plants. The soil in container grown plants tends to dry out quickly, especially in hot sun. Choosing containers in light colors which deflect the sun’s rays can help keep the soil moist for a longer period of time. Because many tropical loving plants thrive in humid environments, our southeastern Pennsylvania and Delaware summer climate is ideal for growing these plants. Many are available at Waterloo Gardens as summer approaches. Here are just a few:

• Tropical Hibiscus with large blooms of red, yellow, pink, and orange

• Mandevilla with large trumpet flowers of pink, white, red, and yellow

• Passion flower vine with amazing and intricate purple blossoms

• White blooming fragrant Jasmine vine

• Palms are beautiful for their foliage rustling in the breezes

Growing Vegetables and Herbs Growing your own herbs and vegetables can be easy, cost effective, and fun! You do not need a huge area, just a small plot of soil, a little extra space in an existing garden bed, or even a container. Here are some easy-to-grow crops sure to give you the gardening bug and delight your friends and family. • Herbs: Purchase plants like parsley, basil, thyme, and oregano in small pots at Waterloo Gardens. Plant up a small herb garden in an area close enough to your kitchen door to make it easy to harvest when you are cooking. A container of herbs on your back deck also works well. • Lettuce: With a few lettuce seeds, you will be able to harvest many salad bowls full. What a savings! The plants will die back in intense heat so enjoy these early and again in the fall. You can also buy small plants in our greenhouse. • Tomatoes: There is really nothing like a freshly picked tomato from your garden. Just two or three plants located in a full sun area will yield enough for your family. Plant a few varieties and enjoy different types in salads, on sandwiches, and in sauces. • Peppers: So many varieties it is hard to choose, but these wonderful vegetables can be enjoyed in stews, sauces, and salsas, not to mention freshly picked right from the garden. Plant in your garden or a large container in full sun.

New To Our Team: Melissa Ciacci joined Waterloo Gardens in March 2013 as the Landscape Manager of the Waterloo Landscaping, Inc. division. She comes to us with extensive experience in landscape design, horticulture, and floral design. Melissa earned certifications in landscape design and horticulture at Longwood Gardens and soon launched her own successful landscape design build business located in northern Chester County. Melissa’s experience running her landscape design business encompassed environment appropriate historic preservation, residential projects from perennial garden beds and native plants to complete property designs, major property renovations, pool and patio areas, as well as commercial property projects including revitalizing landscaping and project managing facilities upgrades to meet commercial code requirements. Several notable large scale projects Melissa managed include a complete historical garden installation coupled with a recreation facility construction project for the John James Audubon homestead at Mill Grove. Another project featured a complete collaborative redesign and renovation of the Concourse Lake Park area in the Fairmont Park system of Philadelphia. Concourse Lake was a large project developed and constructed in celebration of the 100th birthday of the Garden Club of America and was dedicated June 2012. Prior to coming to Waterloo Gardens, Melissa joined forces with a contracting landscape company and managed the operations of that group as well as provided design and project management expertise. Her knowledge of plant species and cycles and skills lead to significant growth of the overall business and earned multiple showcase photo features in EP Henry design catalogs. Melissa spends her free time doing what she loves to do most, rearranging her gardens to confuse the weeds as well as her husband. May 2013

Deer Challenges One of the most frustrating gardening challenges these days is carefully planting a beautiful tree, shrub, perennial, or annual and coming out one day to discover that the deer have destroyed your hard work and financial investment. Short of fencing your entire property with something high enough to keep deer out, you must meet this head on with a multi-layered plan. This will include choosing the most deer resistant plants (nothing is deer proof) and being prepared with sprays, granular products, netting where necessary, and any other remedies you would like to try. Talk to our sales staff in both the nursery and greenhouse for advice on plants that are resistant to deer. Visit our garden department for the products you need to keep deer away. Let us help you relieve a little of the frustration.

Planning Your Outdoor Retreat A well designed landscape is known to enhance the value of your home and the beauty that surrounds your everyday life. Design implies a conscious arrangement of plants and other elements that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. With a little advance planning you will enhance your neighborhood, add property value to your home, and maximize your own satisfaction and enjoyment. Your outdoor living areas should be a place to relax, to appreciate nature, and to be energized. Many landscapes are replications of every other one in the neighborhood and often the results are boring and hard to maintain. Proper planning will save time, money, and the final product will reflect your family’s unique needs. At Waterloo Gardens our experts can help you with the process of planning and selecting the plants for your home with a little help from you. Take the time to know your property. Watch the way the sun affects your house and yard throughout the day and in different seasons. Make note of the direction of prevailing winds which can determine which plants will thrive in a specific location. Know the views from areas of your home so you can plan on opening up a beautiful sight or blocking anything objectionable. Let us help you think of the elements of design that are important for your family’s needs. Then the finished product you spend time, money, and effort on will be both beautiful and functional. Landscape styles vary dramatically from wildscapes that mimic the native look of an area to traditional, well-manicured designs. No matter which style you choose, planning is essential for success, and we are here to provide you with the knowledge you need to begin that process.

Perennials Perform Year after Year Herbaceous perennials are plants that bloom year after year. Their tops die back each fall but their root systems are hardy (although dormant) during the winter. Each spring they regrow from those roots when the conditions are right. Weather drives the timing, not the date on the calendar. Perennials have many advantages: • You do not have to plant them annually. Once established in a suitable location, they will come back year after year. • Perennial gardens are dynamic and change with the season. Every perennial emerges in the spring from the ground, grows, and flowers in its own unique form and time, some blooming early and some late. By selecting a variety of plants with different bloom cycles, you will always have something flowering in your garden.

Azalea and Rhododendron Culture

Saturday, May 18, 2013 - 10:00 a.m. Learn how to grow these acid-loving beauties successfully in our area and some of the problems you may encounter.

• Many perennials must be divided in order to thrive. Dividing helps your garden to expand naturally or gives you the opportunity to share what you cannot use yourself. • The variety of flower color and form is amazing but the interest extends beyond blooms to the many textures and colors of foliage. Choosing perennials can be a challenge if you have not taken the time to consider the conditions in which they will be planted. When a perennial that needs full sun is planted in very little sun, it will not thrive and likewise a shade loving perennial will fail in too much sun. See one of our perennial experts for help in selecting the right plants for your garden. Get started this spring on growing perennials to fill in those empty spots in an existing garden or creating a new and colorful bed of changing color.

Help Us Feed the Community This is the third year for our community garden, and we are more excited than ever to ‘get growing.’ With the assistance of volunteers and experts from the Chester County Food Bank, our goal is to produce ten tons of vegetables to be donated to the needy. Volunteers to help with the garden are always welcome, if you are interested please contact us at 610.363.0800.

@ C.R. Laine May Days Sale What does a can opener have to do with furniture? I had one of those can openers that had two long handles and a smaller handle attached to a gear. You grasped the edge of the can between the long handles and turned the smaller handle to open the can. This can opener lasted twenty-five years before giving up the ghost. I since purchased three different can openers only to have them fail within the first month. That’s what this has to do with furniture. We are proud to offer furniture from C.R. Laine that is made the old fashioned way. Each spring is individually placed and tied for the utmost in comfort and longevity. Patterns are hand-matched to flow from section to section seamlessly. We are so proud to offer this fine upholstered furniture from C.R. Laine that we are offering a ‘get acquainted’ sale. We are confident that once you try this level of quality you won’t want less.
