At Coventry University we place great emphasis on understanding the specific needs of our postgraduate community. We have a long tradition of providing postgraduate, post-experience and research opportunities and are widely recognised for the high quality of this provision. Our dedicated Graduate & Continuing Professional Development Centre has been designed with postgraduate students in mind and demonstrates our commitment to providing you with the best possible experience. It has everything you need under one roof, social facilities, private study areas and trained staff who can offer relevant advice. We have also built considerable flexibility into our postgraduate provision so that you can study in a way which works best for you. Many students conduct their research projects in one of our specialist Applied Research Centres or Groups. These Centres and Groups are multidisciplinary with excellent links to external organisations and funding bodies. The staff working within these areas are renowned in their fields and, with their expertise, we are able to deliver a lively and dynamic environment for doctoral students to work in. Enterprise and entrepreneurship are central to the University; in fact we were ‘highly commended’ for this approach by the Times Higher Awards in 2008. We offer considerable encouragement and support to students who wish to set up their own business. An integrated pathway takes students from initial idea to full business plan, to start-up, to incubator space and from there to ‘grow-on’ facilities with the full range of technical, legal and business support provided. Several such companies are now successfully trading from our award-winning Technology Park. Many of our Masters programmes are explicitly designed to develop knowledge and skills that are at the leading edge of professional practice, or address highly relevant current issues. They prepare students for senior positions in organisations all over the world and draw on the practical experience that students themselves bring to the course.

Coventry University is proud of its reputation for real-life research activity, solving real-world problems. We place great emphasis on the ability to transfer our research expertise to create innovative ways of working or to deliver economic, commercial, environmental, cultural or social benefits. The concept of challenging and solving real-life issues lies at the heart of our applied research philosophy, which is embedded throughout the University. Applied research often draws on expertise from across more than one academic area, enabling us to tackle complex problems outside the scope of any one individual consultant or researcher.

APPLIED RESEARCH – OUR APPROACH

The range of activity undertaken by our postgraduate community spans every subject area. Ranging from art to design, health to sports, regeneration to human security, mathematics to engineering and computing to communications, we apply our expertise to tackle simple or complex problems for our partners in business, industry and commerce. We have long-standing relationships with major multinational companies such as Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Land Rover, Ferrari, Ford, Orange, Corus, Aston Martin, Noble Cars, Advantage West Midlands and Alcan. Many of these collaborations are borne out of our growing number of Applied Research Centres and Groups who undertake specialist or interdisciplinary research and consultancy. In addition, we have established a number of research institutes based at the University’s Technology Park: the Futures Institute, the Serious Games Institute, the Health Design and Technology Institute, the Institute for Creative Enterprise and our latest addition, the Institute of Applied Entrepreneurship. GRADUATE & CPD CENTRE

The Graduate & CPD Centre is a dedicated facility designed to cater specifically for the needs of our postgraduate students. Staff within the Centre are committed to delivering a quality service to our growing postgraduate community and work in partnership with all Schools, Faculties and central departments to enhance the student experience. From pre-application enquiry through to graduation, the Centre’s staff will ensure that all the support you need is available. Our Admissions team will help with selecting the best course for you, advising on course availability, entry requirements, costs and timescales. From a central information point, the team will answer your queries and requests quickly and effectively and will also act on your behalf to obtain course specific information. We will provide everything you need to help you submit a successful application. Once you have enrolled on one of our programmes, you will benefit from full membership to the Graduate & CPD Centre. Based in the Jaguar Building, on the main campus and close to the award-winning Lanchester Library, the Centre provides top class teaching, learning and social facilities. Many of your lectures and seminars may take place at the Graduate & CPD Centre; our teaching and conference rooms are fully-equipped with modern presentation facilities and our meeting and seminar rooms provide a comfortable learning environment. An exclusive ‘quiet study area’ offers private study rooms and members’ office space with 20 computer hotdesks, plus a fully-equipped kitchen and comfortable lounge. All teaching, seminar, meeting and study rooms are available to be booked by and for our members. Computing rooms are open for your use until 10pm on weekdays and until 7pm every weekend and much of the Centre is equipped with wi-fi technology. Our reception and support staff will assist you in the first instance with any general enquiry, related to postgraduate academic, administrative and welfare support and an experienced Student Support Officer is on hand to assist you with specific needs.

Careers Advisers provide a drop-in service for our postgraduate students three times per week, including a late evening session. Further workshops, recruitment and information sessions address specific issues of concern to our members. Members’ events take place throughout the year, providing a range of activities for you to participate in. Free trips to places of interest across the country are scheduled once or twice a month and social events hosted within the Graduate Centre provide an opportunity for all our members to meet and network in a relaxed informal atmosphere. Themed evenings cater for our diverse membership, with food and entertainment provided to suit the occasion and sports tournaments offer the opportunity to pitch your skills against colleagues in friendly challenge matches. Our café bar, games room, members’ lounge and enclosed summer garden provide an ideal environment to mix with friends. Equipped with wireless technology, Sky TV and computer work stations, the versatile social space complements our teaching facilities to ensure choice and flexibility for all students throughout their postgraduate study.

The International Office is based in the Student Centre and provides support and advice to all international and EU students. The team is made up of multilingual staff, many of whom have experience of living and studying abroad. This team will help you from initial application enquiries, to visa advice through to graduation. Meeting the needs of the growing number of international students is central to the University’s values and we work hard to make you feel part of our global community with events, international speakers and seminars. The majority of our research is of “international standing” and we believe that a research culture is an important element of the student experience.

When you arrive Our UK-based support starts from the moment you arrive in the country with a free airport coach pickup service from Heathrow and nearby Birmingham Airport. Student Helpers will meet you in the airport arrivals area, and the coach will take you directly to the campus. The first few days and weeks in a new place can be an exciting period of adjustment so it’s important to give yourself a good start. Our Welcome Week orientation programme provides an opportunity to familiarise yourself with your new environment, meet new friends and register with essential services.

Accommodation

ACCOMMODATION

Making the decision about where to live during your time at Coventry University is one of the most important youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll make. There is no shortage of accommodation in Coventry and the Student Accommodation team are here to help you. For postgraduate students, Coventry University provides high quality, single, ensuite rooms or single and double studios that are either located on campus or very close to the University and City-centre. Our accommodation allows easy access to public transport, shops and the great nightlife in Coventry. Included within your accommodation package is full membership of the University Sports Centre. Free 24-hour shared broadband Internet service is also available in all accommodation. Postgraduate and extended programme students can choose from the following accomodation options:

Lynden House Lynden House opened in September 2003 in the pleasant residential area of Earlsdon, approximately one mile from campus and within easy walking distance of the railway station. Accommodation consists of 62 single en-suite bedrooms on a self-catered basis. Kitchen and dining facilities, is shared between 4 and 7 bedrooms. Residents provide their own cooking utensils and bed linen. Laundry facilities are provided at an extra charge. Please note that the bedrooms vary in size and some are situated on the ground floor.

St Margaret Road A small three storey property located close to the Student Centre, St Margaret Road provides 16 single, self catered en-suite bedrooms arranged in flats and is specifically for postgraduate students who require 50-week agreements. Each flat has a kitchen/diner with plumbing for a washing machine. Included within the rent is free, shared broadband Internet access and free membership to the University Sports Centre.

The Pillar Box The Pillar Box is a new property which opened in September 2006. Located in the heart of the City-centre, just a few minutes walk from the campus, the Pillar Box is a unique, high spec development, managed in conjunction with a private developer. Pillar Box offers single en-suite rooms in groups of 4 or 5 with a shared kitchen and single, double and 2-bed self contained studios. Property charges include membership of Coventry University Sports Centre and broadband internet. There is a laundry on-site (additional charge), lift access, TV aerial and electric heating. Rooms vary in shape and size; a number of rooms have been designed to accommodate disabled students. This property is available on a 50-week contract, ideal for postgraduate and extended programme students.

The City

THE CITY

Coventry City – like the University – embraces the themes of reinvention and innovation. The University lies in the heart of the city and its buildings are as much a part of the landscape as the distinctive Cathedral spires. To complement the University’s plans for a state-of-the-art new campus, the City has responded by unveiling a £6 billion blueprint for a new city centre; including green parks and open spaces in the middle of the city, a waterway following the path of the River Sherbourne through the middle of a new shopping centre with a new library at the heart of the groundbreaking design. The plans continue to embrace the City’s historical past by showcasing its medieval heritage, tastefully combining the old with the new. Even today, before these revolutionary plans are complete, you can walk through Coventry’s pedestrianised City-centre, and see over 1000 years of England’s history, ranging from the medieval charm of historic Spon Street to the architectural innovation of Millennium Place. Culture and arts has been given a major boost in the City over recent years. Coventry Transport Museum attracts thousands of visitors each year and the new development of the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum has welcomed a new History Centre, Creative Media and Arts facilities, new galleries and exhibitions, school space, cafes and much more. The £11m redevelopment of the Belgrade Theatre and Plaza includes a seven-storey extension, boutique hotel and exclusive bars and restaurants. By day, Coventry is a great place to shop, eat, drink and relax while, at night, it transforms into a buzzing, vibrant centre with bars and clubs to keep you entertained through to the small hours. Priory Place – a new urban space surrounded by shops, bars, cafés and apartments and home to the new BBC Radio Coventry & Warwickshire – is a striking testament to the City-centre’s reinvention as a desirable place to work and live. Three shopping centres; the £33m SkyDome complex – incorporating the UKs first and largest City-centre based IKEA, a superclub, ice rink and multiplex cinema as well as brand new art galleries and theatre complexes are just some of the City-centre’s entertainment highlights.

The £60m Ricoh Arena is home to the City’s football team and has become a major entertainments venue for the Midlands. Thousands of visitors have flocked to the Arena for major sporting events including rugby union’s Heineken Cup and some of the biggest names in music; Take That, Oasis and Bon Jovi. The Ricoh is based at Arena Park, just outside the City-centre. The Park brings together shops – including Next, Marks and Spencer, Borders, Starbucks and the largest Tesco in Europe, with a casino and leisure facilities to form a popular city attraction. But it’s not all superstores and superclubs. Coventry is a gateway to some of the most historic, cultural and scenic areas of the UK, including the peace and beauty of the Warwickshire countryside. For a relaxing escape, close by to Coventry you’ll find Royal Leamington Spa, the castles of Kenilworth and Warwick and Coombe Park – a 300-acre estate comprising an abbey, formal gardens, woodland nature trails and wildlife. For literary heritage, Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon attracts people from all over the world and also boasts a superb cultural mix with live music as well as theatre on offer. Best of all, it’s only 20 minutes away from Coventry. And then there’s Birmingham, Coventry’s bigger, brasher neighbour. It is a thriving centre for arts, entertainment, sport and culture and the home of the world-famous City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and is just 30 minutes away by road or rail. The National Indoor Arena, the Birmingham Hippodrome, Symphony Hall, the International Convention Centre and the historic redeveloped Town Hall are just some of the wonderful venues to be found in Britain’s second city.

Coventry’s campus is changing. The University has embarked on a £160million ‘masterplan’ to create a campus that provides students with the very latest in teaching and learning facilities combined with open, communal spaces for relaxing, socialising, studying and showcasing the University’s talents in art and cultural enterprise.

The new campus was borne out of student feedback; you asked for it and we’re delivering it. Two iconic buildings will be the first steps in the development, which will see Coventry’s campus evolve. The first is a Student Enterprise Centre which will become the new heart of the University, providing first class facilities for students and a new home for the Students’ Union. The building, which will have two frontages, will feature shops, bars and cafés as well as an entertainment venue and creative space for students. A new home for the Faculty of Engineering and Computing will be located next to the University’s library. The building will feature two ‘arms’ representing science and nature and has been designed to be highly sustainable, harnessing the latest in solar energy. State-of-the-art lecture theatres, meeting rooms, labs and a café will maximise the use of natural daylight providing an ideal environment for study. The plans will also see much of the area inside the campus become pedestrianised, creating a safer, smarter site. Lighting, the use of public art, seating and horticulture will all play a part in creating Coventry’s futuristic new campus – providing you with the ideal base for your studies for the next few years. While you are here you will continue to enjoy all the facilities which make Coventry so unique. We’ve already spent millions on providing first class facilities to deliver a first class experience.

We pioneered the use of new technology in art and design and our facilities in the field of digital creativity are amongst the best in the world, particularly those used for design concept development and automotive styling. The synergies arising out of the crossovers between design, communication and art forms are explored, and work at the interfaces between conventional and new media are actively developed. The School of Art and Design has an excellent reputation for its research and related postgraduate study activities. It has consistently scored highly in the national research assessment exercises and has an international reputation for areas of its design research and art practice. Staff responsible for developing and delivering our postgraduate programmes are leaders in their fields and many are noted for their media and digitally related work, some of which receives international acclaim. Our artists exhibit and perform worldwide in professional venues, our designers are commissioned by leading companies and deliver publicly funded consultancy services. We are based within three adjacent buildings on the compact City-centre University campus. The Graham Sutherland Building includes workshops for ceramics, textiles, painting, sculpture, fine printmaking, jewellery, metalwork, plastic forming, casting, automotive clay modelling and digital media. In the areas of CAD and multimedia work, our research environment is enhanced by dedicated computer and media studios/laboratories. The Graham Sutherland Building is also home to the Lanchester Gallery, which hosts a regular programme of exhibitions of contemporary art, craft and design. Adjacent to the Graham Sutherland Building is the Bugatti Building, housing the Coventry University Advanced Digitising and Modelling Laboratory (cu-adam lab), a specialist research facility that can accommodate full-size vehicle styling, virtual modelling and high-level CAD. This state-of-the-art building contains a research seminar room and workshops, together with high quality accommodation for the School’s researchers and consultants. The Performing Arts and Media and Communication departments are located in the Ellen Terry Building which contains two theatres, rehearsal rooms and studio and seminar space. In addition, there are facilities for students to work in a variety of media, including photography, television and radio broadcasting. The School also has a specialist shop that supplies art and design materials at preferential rates and the extensive Art and Design Library – housed within the Frederick Lanchester Building – provides students with a modern environment in which to further pursue their studies. Our postgraduate provision comprises a range of taught Masters degree courses and students come from all over the world to carry out individual research projects, which lead to Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctorate (PhD) awards, under the supervision of our specialist staff.

Staff within the Law School regularly publish articles in journals, and actively engage in research and consultancy work, with areas of research interest including Human Rights, Criminal Justice, Employment Law, Public, Equity and Trusts, Legal Aspects of Business and Tax Law. The Law School has forged a variety of links in Western and Eastern Europe, the United States of America, Malaysia and Australia. An in-house law journal is produced twice yearly and students are encouraged to contribute articles and case notes and to publish in other journals. In the School of International Studies and Social Science, our postgraduate programmes draw on a range of expertise in History, International Relations and Diplomacy, European Politics, African Politics, Human and Global Security, Peace Studies and the Politics of Asia. Research and courses are also offered in both Twentieth Century History; Terrorism, International Crime and Global Security; as well as Diplomacy, Law and Global Change. The English Department is dedicated to the study and support of the English language in use, through close analysis of usersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; communicative practices and needs, the creation of effective learning materials, and the professional development of teachers. The work of the department is informed by the innovative research undertaken by its staff in corpus-based linguistics and technology enhanced learning environments. They offer postgraduate programmes in English Language Teaching and English Language Teaching in professional contexts. The Department of Geography, Environment and Disaster Management offers exciting, career-relevant courses together with a range of methodological and research techniques. A dynamic team of committed staff, who are experts in their field, teach these courses. Research in the Department is undertaken in the broad areas of Environmental Management, Geography, Disaster Management, Geographical Information Systems and International Relief Development. Teaching throughout the Faculty is informed by up-to-date applied research and delivered by experienced industry professionals. We also have a number of Applied Research Centres and Applied Research Groups.

The Faculty prides itself on offering a dynamic educational experience. You will learn using the most up-to-date technology, including specialist software. Many resources are available online â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you can access them around the world or from one of our many computer labs, while wireless broadband internet access on campus will ensure you get the most out of our excellent facilities. Our Law programmes are taught in a modern environment, which includes a mooting room and an extensive law library. A state-of-the-art Languages Centre gives students the opportunity to improve their language skills, as well as providing a supportive learning environment for researching international issues, where satellite channels from across the globe are beamed into a brand new hub of technology and culture. Facilities for Geographical and Environmental Management include the latest GIS and image processing software; a comprehensive range of laboratory and field equipment and a tropical greenhouse used by project students for research and experiments. There is also specialist equipment used in disaster relief provided by Oxfam and Relief Pod International and a dedicated Information Resource room that houses a unique collection of maps and documents relating to Disaster Management. Our MBA and MA/MSc programmes attract students from all over the world and allow you to study in a variety of specialist areas. Students can also apply for a company internship and prepare a report or a dissertation as the final part of their study.

Coventry University Enterprises, a subsidiary of Coventry University, is the organisation through which the University runs much of its commercial, income-generating and business-partnership work. Operating in a regional, national, European and international context, CUE supports the corporate aims and seeks to maximise the commercial potential of the University’s skills, expertise and resources. CUE focuses on innovation, design, high performance automotive engineering, health, environment and ICT as areas of expertise. Through this activity it has to date supported thousands of Small-to-Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) through specific projects and support programmes. Over 200 SMEs have been established with the support of CUE and many more have benefited from one-to-one involvement. In addition the company’s project activity has been able to demonstrate hundreds of new jobs established and thousands of existing jobs safeguarded.

Design & Ergonomics Qualification: MSc Ergonomic design makes products and systems safer, usable and desirable. The simplest things can be difficult to use if poorly designed. Studying ergonomics provides designers with the knowledge and tools to ensure that peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs are considered throughout the design process and are evident in the final product. This course will appeal to people from either human science or design backgrounds. This course equips you with specialist skills required of a designer in the automotive industry. It contains two and three-dimensional design and provides the opportunity to apply CAD to automotive design project work. Delivered in association with, and validated by, the Universities of Dundee and Sheffield Hallam and the Institution of Economic Development, this innovative programme aims to meet the needs of practitioners and those seeking to further their career in local economic development. The programme is delivered through distance learning and takes one year of full-time study or three of part-time, with exit points at Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Masters levels.

Designed for part-time participants for whom community cohesion is a significant role or responsibility, the suite of postgraduate courses provides a unique blend of peer group learning and practical support from senior academics, management professionals and cohesion specialists. Each course lasts one year; they can be viewed as separate stages of a full Masters qualification as the courses follow on from each other, or they can be studied individually. Participants with the appropriate level of experience can enter directly at the Diploma or MA stage.
