Orlando | Whether you consider them a landmark or an eyesore, there’s one thing for certain: the painted mannequin legs that stand proudly on the roof of The Center are no longer there.

Randy Stephens, interim executive director of The Center, said he snapped a photo of the legs on June 3 then noticed they were gone on June 9, so they disappeared on or close to Gay Days weekend. Stephens ďŹ led a report with the Orlando Police Department, which is classifying the case as a commercial burglary and has no suspects.

The legs were installed in June 2009 to promote artist M. Scott Morgan’s art show made up of recycled mannequins. The sculptures are valued at $900.

Stephens said the structures supporting the legs are still attached, and they can tell the thief climbed a tree to get to them based on broken branches found by the side of the building. “If they’re displaying it in their home, eventually someone is going to notice,�

Stephens said.

He said there are security camera tapes but they haven’t been reviewed yet.

Some may speculate that there’s a pattern of vandalism, as hateful anti-gay messaged were spray-painted on the building in November 2009, but Stephens doesn’t think that’s the

case. “This isn’t vandalism, its theft, and we don’t see this as any kind of hate message,� he said. “We can’t call everything that happens here a hate crime; sometimes it’s mischievous.�

He said reactions to the missing art have been mixed. “There have been people who walked in and said, ‘Oh thank goodness, you took the legs down,’� he said. “Others have said ‘Oh my gosh, what happened to the legs?!’� | l |

Gay politicians: Behind the rumors jamie hyman Orlando | One gay candidate is throwing his hat into the ring, and another denies that she’s calling it quits. After some speculation and rumors, Watermark tracked down the politicians in question to find the truth.

Greg Reynolds, a Realty Capital senior associate and former co-owner of Sparky’s Pet Salon, confirmed that he did qualify to run for Florida House District 36, a seat currently occupied by Scott Randolph. Reynolds is running on the Republican ticket and faces attorney Craig McCarthy in the August primary.

“I’ve been looking forward to running this race for quite some time; the opportunity came

up and I needed to get in,” Reynolds said.

“We’re trying to fix the economy and balance the budget and bringing jobs is number one issue at hand.”

The other gay politician who has been the target of some rumors is Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, who answered questions about whether this would be her last term.

“That’s not true,” Sheehan said. “I know there’s been a lot of speculation, but I intend to work hard and for as long as my constituents will keep me.”

She said she will “make those decisions when the time is appropriate,” and she has plenty of time—her term isn’t up till 2012. | l |

St. Petersburg | When Clear Channel declined to post two images on billboards around Tampa Bay, declaring they were “inappropriate,” St. Pete Pride decided to pull all of its advertising from the media giant.

The move came as a surprise to the organization, which had partnered with Clear Channel over the past few years to advertise the state’s largest LGBT Pride event, which is on Saturday, June 26.

In an e-mail forwarded to the press from Chris Rudisill, St. Pete Pride’s executive director, an unnamed Clear Channel representative states that only two images were approved by the Division President and Public Affairs Director. Those two images were scheduled to appear two weeks before the festival, but now St. Pete Pride wants out of its contract with the advertising company.

“The ads themselves don’t portray anything sexual, immoral or offensive,” Rudisill said. “In that it was a corporate decision of Clear Channel to impose this censorship, it is the decision of St. Pete Pride to end our relationship with Clear Channel. Further, St. Pete Pride will be asking the local governments to review the ordinances granting Clear Channel special privileges in building new signs.”

In response to a story posted on WatermarkOnline.com about the issue, Clear Channel Outdoor President Daniel Dunnivant sent an e-mail, hoping to clarify the company’s stance.

“Although as a matter of policy we don’t discuss creative decisions about signage—we do think it’s important to refute suggestions that CCO is not willing to display images of LGBT couples showing affection,” Dunnivant said in the e-mail. “Previous years’ campaigns for St. Pete Pride prove that is not the case.”

The e-mail also includes communication from Dunnivant to Rudisill, which expresses disappointment in the dissolving of the contract between the two organizations.

“I can tell you that we began working … this year with St. Pete Pride in … [a] cooperative spirit,” the letter says. “As is the

It’s unclear if Clear Channel will refund St. Pete Pride’s $1,000 investment in the campaign, but Rudisill said the money is not the heart of the issue.

“We would rather lose the money than be edited on what’s okay and what’s not,” Rudisill said. “The ads themselves are fine and Clear Channel never explained why they weren’t acceptable.”

Rudisill knew about Clear Channel’s right to refuse images, but this year, the board didn’t want to censor anything, since every image, Rudisill said, was a positive family scene.

“It is sad, although not surprising, that the corporation responsible for allowing Rush Limbaugh and other conservative, anti-gay, radio personalities to spew their hate-filled tirades into homes across America, would try to suppress an ad campaign that attempted to show a positive image of the gay community,” Rudisill said in an e-mail to several press outlets.

He compares the censorship to the censorship of non-Caucasians appearing in ads during the 1950s and 1960s.

“While our organization will not apologize for trying to portray our community as equal members of society, sometimes advertising can serve as a positive steward of change by resulting in those uncomfortable reactions that have the power to initiate dialogue,” Rudisill said.

The move by Clear Channel may result in the loss of business from other LGBT organizations. It’s rumored that Metro Wellness and Community Centers considering pulling away from the advertising giant. | l |

“Alexis Summers� arrested in Pasco prostitution sting steve blanchard New Port Richey | Once again Alexis Summers has found herself behind bars. The Pasco County resident, who is legally known as Raymond Bowen, was arrested during a prostitution sting on Friday, June 18.

In all, 11 people were arrested during the eight hour undercover sting by the Pasco County Sheriff’s OfďŹ ce and the New Port Richey police, authorities said. OfďŹ cers made arrests by posing as customers at intersections in west Pasco.

Bowen, 34, of New Port Richey, was arrested on a felony charge of soliciting prostitution. According to a report from the Pasco County Sheriff’s OfďŹ ce, Bowen entered the vehicle of an undercover ofďŹ cer and offered to perform oral sex for $40. The report also says that Bowen reached into the ofďŹ cer’s pants without consent.

It was unclear whether Bowen was dressed as a woman or a man during the arrest.

OfďŹ cials have charged him with prostitution on three previous occasions—most recently in January of this year. In the report, Bowen is quoted as saying another arrest would not make him stop the practice. “I’ve been arrested for prostitution before and I’ll be out tomorrow,â€? Bowen is quoted

The arresting ofďŹ cer requested that Bowen be held in lieu of the appropriate bond.

This is not the ďŹ rst time Bowen has appeared in Watermark for an arrest. In January 2009, Watermark reported on Bowen’s arrest for criminal mischief and burglary. In that incident Bowen, who was dressed as a woman, jumped into a truck stopped at a red light and began fondling the male driver. He reportedly told that driver that he needed “to make 20 bucks.â€?

When the driver attempted to call 911, Bowen allegedly took his cell phone, which resulted in the burglary charge.

St. Petersburg | The Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is without an executive director—at least for the time being. Newly hired director Rosie Stallman resigned earlier this month after just a few months in the role. Details on her departure are limited, but according to Friends of the Festival Vice President David Gonzalez, the position just “didn’t work out.� “She decided to move on,� he said in a prepared statement. “Rosie brought some great things to this organization and we are appreciative of her service and what she was able to achieve in the time she was with the Festival.�

The Friends of the Festival hired Stallman to the executive position in February.

Stallman told Watermark in March that she pursued the position as soon as she learned that former executive director Chuck Henson was leaving the post to pursue a career at Bay News 9’s TrafďŹ c Center. “I was still on a high from [the 2009] Festival and I was like, ‘This is perfect,’â€?

Stallman said.

Stallman’s resignation leaves a vacant executive director’s chair at TIGLFF, but Gonzalez said the organization is already considering an appropriate replacement for the position. “We are currently seeking to ďŹ ll the position and we already have someone in mind,â€? Supper Party to raise funds for ALSO staff report Sarasota | ALSO Out Youth will host a special Supper Party to raise money for its programs benefitting LGBT youth in the Sarasota and Manatee county area on Friday, June 25.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, as the event has been dubbed, begins at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by an after party featuring drinks, desserts and a silent auction. The dinner will be held at ALSO Out Youth, 1470 Boulevard of the Arts, in Sarasota.

ALSO Out Youth creates programs targeting LGBT youth ages 13 to 21. Its mission is to end discrimination based on real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. The $30 donations at the Supper Party will go toward funding programs such as peer support services, social activities, educational programs and workshops, advocacy and referrals for LGBT youth, their families and their friends.

Board members David Sell and Ashley Steele, along with executive director Sue Westcott, will host the “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” event. The supper will also provide an opportunity for those

interested to see what it takes to be a part of the volunteer board, which is actively seeking new members.

“ALSO is at a critical point in our history,” Westcott said in a recent newsletter. “We have to re-position ourselves in the community. We have to reach out to donors and friends. Mend old fences. Build new bridges. We must advocate and be the leader, ready and poised, to face or respond to issues that affect our mission.

As part of the working board, members are responsible for all ALSO activities to sustain its mission in support of LGBT youth. This includes attracting, training and supervising staff; fundraising including cultivating donors, creating and attending events, preparing annual fundraising campaigns, etc.; volunteering in our DropIn Center as time allows; meeting with community leaders and other outreach activities. AIDS drug assistance program faces cuts

The Florida Department of Health has made substantial changes to the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) citing a record increase in clients brought on by the current economic climate. The department has instituted a waiting list for ADAP and the drugs offered through the program will be limited to antiretroviral (ARV) and opportunistic infections (OI). Clients receiving medications through Ryan White Part A will not be affected.

Current Florida ADAP clients were informed of the changes through a flyer enclosed in the bag with their latest round of medications.

Current clients will remain enrolled in the program provided they pick-up their medications at the scheduled time and re-enroll in the program every six months. Clients failing to meet either of these stipulations will be automatically changed to a “closed” status and will be placed on a waiting list when they re-enroll. The waiting list and enrollment policy went into effect June 1.

“This essentially makes people who are newly infected and unable to cover costs unable to get their meds,” said Ed P., who asked that his last name not be used. “It’s almost like the beginning of the crisis in the 1980s. You’re infected and there’s nothing you can do to combat the disease.”

According to the National Alliance of State & Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD), Florida is one of 11 states implementing a waiting list. Florida is the largest state to

adopt a waiting list, and has the third largest population of people living with HIV and AIDS (approx. 18,000). As of June 10, Florida had 113 individuals on its waiting list.

That number, while it may appear small, concerns Andy Stone of St. Petersburg.

“Sure, 113 doesn’t look big when you look at the overall population, but when timing is everything, not getting your meds can be a life and death situation,” he said. “Those of us fighting HIV have always been told how important it is to start treatment immediately and to remain on that regimen. This cuts make it difficult for some to even get started on a program.”

Effective August 1, the Florida ADAP formulary will be reduced to include 28 ARVs and 19 OIs. Wanda Tomlinson, insurance/pharmacy coordinator for Hope & Help of Central Florida, said a list of drugs are expressly excluded. Examples of “wrap around” drugs that are likely to be included are: wasting medicines, psychotherapy, hypoglycemia and blood pressure medications.

To provide clients with drugs not covered by the ADAP, AIDS service organizations, such as Hope & Help, will rely more heavily on existing relationships with drug manufacturers through Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs). The success of providing these drugs may be precluded by cost and controls that require the client to extensive documentation.

“The goal of everyone in this field is to not let people go without their medications,” Tomlinson said. | l |

Sink says she doesn’t support gay marriage jarrett terrill St. Petersburg | Gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink has contradicted her pro-equality image by saying: “I don’t support gay marriage. I think that is entirely a religious decision that individuals can make. I do support civil unions.”

Sink was speaking to a group in St. Petersburg on June 10 when she clarified her position, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

This is in contrast with what the LGBT community might expect from the winner of Equality Florida’s esteemed “Voice of Equality” award for the year 2009. At the reception gala, she garnered standing applause from about 200 of South Florida’s gay community leaders. She spent approximately 10 minutes giving a stump speech about how “every American deserves to be treated equally,” but mostly she gave the audience her resume from her days at Bank of America. She did not, however, talk about “Amendment 2,” which bans LGBT

persons from participating in both marriage and civil unions.

At the beginning of that November 2009 gala, director Nadine Smith introduced Alex Sink and others by saying, “When you look around at these galas… you see the backbone of the gay community.” Alex Sink took to the podium and made a total of eight pleas for campaign money while saying nothing about specific actions she would take as governor in favor of the LGBT community.

“I know that together, we can make equality for all Floridians a reality,” Sink said to the guests at the 2009 Equality Florida event.

With another election year upon us, television campaigns and newspaper ads for politicians running for various positions have flooded our daily lives. While Florida faces many issues important to all residents, Watermark wants to focus on specific LGBT issues.

Congressman Kendrick Meek, Democratic candidate for the United States Senate took a few minutes to speak with Watermark to discuss some of the tough issues that are important to our readers. Here are his answers to questions pertinent to Florida’s LGBT community:

Why do you support same-sex adoption?

Florida has one of the largest waiting lists on homes to place kids out of foster care. I don’t agree with the gay adoption ban. I think it has nothing to do with having a child grow up in a home where people love that child and are willing to take care of that child and are willing to make sure that child goes to college and become an adult.

To have adults willing to raise children in this state is far better than having a child in a foster home. All due respect to foster parents.

Eight and nine kids in a house that are going to be released at the age of 18—I can tell you that at age 18 I wasn’t ready to be released from anything. I needed that parental involvement.

If adoptions [by same-sex couples] can take place in states like Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia—and Florida seems to be the only hold out—it speaks more to political agendas versus making sure that those children are taken care of. | l |

WATERMARK: What is your position on repealing the Gay ban in the military?

Kendrick Meek: The last three years, I’ve supported repealing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.” General Colin Powell said that it was the wrong decision when they made the decision [to implement it]. The Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mullin has said that it has nothing to do with the defense of the country. If we ask our men and women to be honorable and to be truthful with the people that they serve within this country, the last thing that we should ask them to do is lie about their orientation. That

Final arguments in US gay marriage case wire report San Francisco, Calif. | Lawyers arguing a landmark federal case involving California’s same-sex marriage ban made their final arguments June 18, with supporters describing matrimony as an institution intended to promote childbearing and opponents saying the U.S. Supreme Court had recognized it as a fundamental right.

Former U.S. Solicitor General Theodore Olson delivered the closing argument for the two same-sex couples who sued to overturn voter-approved Proposition 8, claiming it violated their civil rights under the U.S. Constitution.

He told Chief U.S. Judge Vaughn Walker that tradition or fears of harm to heterosexual unions were legally insufficient grounds to discriminate against gay couples. “’We have always done it that way’ is a corollary to ‘Because I say so.’ It’s not a reason,’’ Olson said at the start of the fivehour hearing. “You can’t have constitutional

discrimination in public schools because you have always done it that way.”

Former U.S. Justice Department lawyer Charles Cooper, who represents religious and conservative groups that sponsored the 2008 ballot measure, countered that cultures around the world, previous courts and Congress all accepted the “common sense belief that children do best when they are raised by their own mother and father.”

Walker is being asked to strike down the measure that banned same-sex marriages in California five months after the state’s highest court legalized the practice and after an estimated 18,000 couples from around the nation had tied the knot.

FBI looks into gay attack as possible hate crime wire report Savannah Ga. | An attack on a gay man who witnesses say was knocked unconscious by two U.S. Marines who thought he winked at them has prompted a preliminary investigation into whether the case warrants federal charges as a hate crime.

An FBI spokesman said the agency and federal prosecutors were looking into the June 12 attack on 26-year-old Kieran Daly to see if it meets requirements for hate crime charges by the Justice Department.

Police found Daly unconscious on a downtown street corner just after 3 a.m. The

two Marines, stopped after an officer saw them running, were arrested on misdemeanor battery charges. A police report says Daly and two of his friends were talking and joking with the Marines in one of Savannah’s popular nightlife districts.

Eyewitness Alison Brennan told police one of the Marines got upset when he found out Daly was gay. She said she heard the man say to Daly: “Did you just wink at me?”

Concepts are clearly changing, but “family” remains a lynchpin of full equality because it is fundamental to connected happiness. Regardless of form, or legal foundation, they require maturity, flexibility and selflessness to fully succeed. | l |

erasure’s andy bell to celebrate gaybor days 2010 on july 4 erik caban

T

aking a hiatus from Erasure, front man Andy Bell has released his second solo album, aptly named Non-Stop. At 46 and with a 25-year career behind him, he’s shown no signs of slowing down.

Bell will promote his latest endeavor and make a few personal appearances, including a stop at The Honey Pot in Tampa on July 4 during the Third Annual GaYbor Days celebration.

Still very much a part of Erasure, Bell assures us there will be a new album, scheduled for November, and a tour to follow.

“I love being with Erasure,” Bell says. “But I felt I needed to shake the cobwebs off and spread my wings a bit.”

His solo album provided a liberating platform for his more clubby, nocturnal, disco-glam side. Co-produced by Goldfrapp’s Pascal Gabriel, Non-Stop is a lavish, glam-pop collection of exquisite dance floor confessionals from one of the most acclaimed and beloved singers in British pop. Bell also collaborated with Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction, whom he met during the True Colors Tour.

Despite his extensive and successful career, Bell has faced a bit of ageism in the UK. A couple of the songs on Non-Stop were released recently as singles under the name Mimó.

“That was the record company’s idea,” Bell says. “They wanted to see if we could catch radio play on its own merits, which did happen. But once they found out it was me, my age became an issue. For some reason, if you’re over 40, you’re not deemed in the demographic for Radio 1, which plays dance music and is a lot of young people.

“But the issue is that my music isn’t middle-of-the-road enough for Radio 2.

The film shows us how these expert Rangers meet, and then how they later fall on the wrong side of the law.

The story revolves around Cooper’s old flame (Biel), an Iraqi counterfeiting scheme, and a rogue CIA operative (Wilson).

Everything is fast and loud and shallow in exactly the same formula that makes for summer blockbusters. There are twists and turns, impossible operations that defy physics, and ham-fisted acting—exactly what we’d want from an A-Team movie.

It is a little disconcerting to have a great actor like Neeson cashing in, but he doesn’t embarrass himself. It’s even weirder how the script tries to insert several insights about love, pacifism, patriotism, and loyalty. It’s like watching a Tom and Jerry cartoon where the characters cut off each other’s tails and then sermonize to the audience.

C’mon, A-Team, stick to the plan!

Action, action, action!

ove is all over Toy Story 3. Toys fall in love with each other, and we can tell the creators love their characters. Most three-quels make audiences wince, but TS3 is delightful and very emotionally engaging.

Toy owner Andy has finally grown up and is going to college. His belongings wonder what their fate will be: the garbage or the attic. Cowboy Woody (Hanks) asks his pals to stick to the plan—be there for whatever Andy needs. Buzz Lightyear (Allen) and the other toys aren’t so sure. When things go awry, they find themselves in a scary preschool under the leadership of a creepy teddy bear (Beatty).

Toy Story was the first film by Pixar, the studio famous for advancing technology while telling an involving story. In TS3, these plastic gadgets find a beautiful way to show how we humans deal with change—what we do when we feel obsolete, discarded, or rejected.

Kids will eat this up, because the characters are hilarious and the action is intense. Adults Splice will love it, too, because we (Starring Adrian Brody, understand nostalgia. But Sarah Polley, Delphine more importantly, we have Chanéac) all also faced the sadness and ★★★★★ panic of impending change.

Sadly, the science is fairly rudimentary, and so is the message. This flick could’ve used less pop psychology about egomaniacal scientists. A better story would’ve upped the stakes, letting us meet average people who’d benefit from such outlaw experimentation.

Instead, the whole shebang devolves into a stereotypical chase scene.

However, the rock-solid commitment of the actors adds some weight to this sophomoric tragedy of scientific hubris. If you’re into this

According to the Hillsborough Clerk of Courts, the owners of the LGBT eatery have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization after it revealed it owes $120,000 in sales taxes. Managers of the company are listed as Charles Moresi and The Atticus Group Inc. That group includes James L. Clark and Eric Watson as its officers. According to a property search through the Hillsborough Clerk of Courts Web site, the building currently occupied by Streetcar Charlie’s is owned

by Focaccia Mia Management Inc. It’s unclear whether the recent debut of Hamburger Mary’s is to blame for the financial problems facing Charlie’s, which is on 15th Street.

Last weekend, Orlando was all about the much-anticipated $200 million Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios.

Author J.K. Rowling and actor Daniel Radcliffe were in town for the grand opening.

Local media trumpeted horror stories of muggles standing in line for up to eight hours to gain entry to the 20-acre park. But on Sunday morning, early arrivals entered the world of Hogwarts Castle and Hogsmeade Village in just over an hour, and lines for the three rides moved quickly. Impressions? The buildings and atmospherics are a triumph.

The centerpiece Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride had some glitches on Sunday, but is otherwise an ambitious excerpt from the Potter movies in a format reminiscent of Disney’s Haunted Mansion and Islands of Adventure’s Spiderman.

Products pulled right out of the books make merchandising a delight—especially for Potter fanatics—but not worth the hourplus wait to get into small, crowded shops.

If you’re into Harry Potter, don’t miss this one-of-a-kind attraction right in our own backyard. And as you’re walking around, remember that Rowling herself said she envisioned heroic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore as gay.

One of the trendiest clothing stores in the area is closing its doors this month. Sunset Strip sells bold, edgy, flattering day and nighttime clothing and accessories. It is all 60-70% off at their Winter Park store through June 30. After three years in business at 1198 Orange Avenue, owners Suzi Vachon and Cindy Kaplus said “the economy got the better of us.” Here’s hoping they resurface soon.

Family Law Five years ago, the University of Florida law school jointly hired its first couple as teachers. And in this case the couple was gay. Lee-ford Tritt was brought in as Estates and Trusts instructor, and his partner Michael Siebecker trained students in Corporations and Business Law. Turns out it was a good move. Siebecker is a respected member of the faculty, and Tritt was recently chosen by students as “Professor of the Year” for the second consecutive year. “There is really nothing more important to me than striving to be a good teacher,” said Tritt.

While Siebecker and Tritt’s careers thrived in Gainesville, their relationship didn’t. But they remain good friends.

It’s been that way for decades. Because the LGBT community was socially marginalized—and often trapped in straight marriages—they would seek out semi-public places to meet others, socialize and, of course, have sex.

In these days of online chat and LGBT visibility, the need for the public hookup has basically disappeared (unless you’re a closeted Republican politician or a fundamentalist minister). However, the location of gay beaches near nude beaches still remains.

“It’s that way all over the world,” says Hayes, a flight attendant who’s traveled to Moscow and Africa within the last couple months. “At any nude beach, you walk a little farther and you find the gay section.”

So it’s easy to state that in Central Florida, the gay beaches are the nude beaches—Playalinda on the east coast and Tarpon Springs and Dunedin on the west coast.

However, a broader perspective opens you up to all sorts of possibilities for all the great beaches Florida is worldrenowned for.

Dr. Horton specializes in aesthetic medicine. He promotes healthy skin—preventing future damage as well as correcting damage already done. Since we’re focused on swimwear and beaches in this issue of Watermark, we asked him to share his knowledge about skin care. In a few minutes, he’d given a wealth of information on the mythologies about skin damage, on the proper care of your skin, and on the importance of putting your best face forward. Tell us about AesthetiMed. The area of aesthetic medicine is a newer specialty within medicine. It emphasizes how to protect your skin and how to reverse some of the damage done over time due to things like sun exposure and the forces of gravity. It’s not about maintaining the look of a 19-year-old, but being healthy in your own look. That’s why my tagline says, “Look your best at every age.”

I start by educating people about good habits like proper diet, regular exercise, and taking care of your skin and appearance. Much of skin damage occurs early in life. The best skin care treatments are preventative, so starting early and being consistent is important.

However, if you’re 50, and you have a brow ridge that looks like cornrows, then we’re not going to be able to rely on preventative treatments alone. At AesthetiMed we use a comprehensive approach to improving clients’ appearances—cosmeceuticals and specialized skin care devices, botulinum toxins and facial fillers. I also use chemical peels, laser and light based therapies to improve the look of sun damaged skin of the face and neck.

Are there any specific skin challenges that lesbians face?

I can think of one right away. Acne— especially acne that persists into your 20s and 30s—can be lessened by the use of oral contraceptives. If lesbians feel that they don’t have to use birth control, they may have more issues with acne.

Given that a higher percentage of gay men who smoke, is the skin damage from smoking likely to affect our community more?

Yes. Smoking exposes the skin to more oxidative stress; this accelerates the aging process. Smokers tend to have more wrinkles and look older.

There are other issues that affect the skin of gay men. I think gay men like to be tanned, so that they look good in their bathing suits. So there’s a propensity toward excessive sun exposure.

Are there any misconceptions about the sun and skin damage?

People equate sun damage with burning which comes primarily from UV-B rays.

Walking to and from your car each day is actually enough sun exposure to damage the

deeper skin structures. The cumulative effect of UV-A exposure is a problem. Like farmers you see with rough, leathery neck and arm skin. They’ve received enough of the UV-A rays that penetrate into the deeper levels of the skin and over time and break down the collagen and elastin within the skin.

People should put some level of sun protection on every day even for their normal activities. Then if you’re going to go kayaking or sailing, choose more protection and reapply often, especially if you’re in and out of the water.

Is there a good way to tan?

UV exposure—whether from the sun or tanning beds—causes skin damage that leads to premature lines and wrinkles. There are good ways to get a little color. There are good bronzers and self-tanning lotions for the body and face that give people just a little bit of glow and make them look healthy.

How important is drinking water to healthy skin?

Staying hydrated is very important, and you can accomplish that by drinking lots of water. There are also things that we can apply to the skin to help lock moisture in. Good moisturizers help prevent water loss through evaporation. Humectants pull water up into the epidermis from the deep layers of the skin. The other thing that helps is using products that contain emollients, because these fill in the cracks and crevices, smoothing out the dry, roughened patches, improving the overall appearance of the skin.

It’s also important to consider the topical application of antioxidants. Antioxidants help neutralize the oxidative stress placed on your skin from sun exposure, smoke and pollution.

Only 2% of dietary antioxidants make it to the skin, so it’s also very important to apply antioxidants directly to the skin like vitamin C and E. Finally, a good skin care routine also exfoliates to increase epidermal skin turnover.

What’s your best tip?

Take care of the skin you have with a twice daily regimen of washing and moisturizing your face. Apply your skin protectants like sun blocks and anti-oxidants in the morning and use your exfoliants and any corrective serums at night.

Develop good skin care habits and stick to them. You can’t just do something for a week, and then think you’re good for the rest of the year. It needs to be a routine. | l |

wimsuit season is officially upon us and we Floridians are flocking to the beaches and dipping in the pools.

While swimsuit style is important to many, it’s important not to forget the necessary grooming rituals that can make or break a beach-ready look.

Along with being in shape, men should also be aware of the visual impact of body hair.

Depending on the cut of a pair of trunks, unkempt pubic hair can show at the top, sides and bottom of your swimsuit. Women have been aware of and mastered the art of maintaining unwanted body hair.

Yes, this is all aesthetics and depends on your personal preference. But consider waxing, shaving or just trimming. Not only is it more comfortable and cooler during the warmer months, but there is a very sensual feeling about being smooth and maintained down there. Your partner will appreciate it as well.

Because this a very sensitive zone, male grooming requires more patience and care. It’s a bit different than your morning facial shave. Below are some tried and true methods to get a close, safe shave while avoiding common problems like nicks and ingrown hairs.

This is probably the easiest and clear-cut (if you will) way to tame that hairy beast. Use a body trimmer with attachments that protect you from the blade.

Don’t use a beard or hair trimmer. They are not made to access the sensitive skin below the belt and the blades can nip the skin. Trust me.

Been there. Done that. Ouch!

Many companies now offer tools for this specific purpose. I like the Philips Norelco BG2020 or 2030 Professional Body Grooming System which can be used in or out of the shower. It comes with an attachment for chest/back hair and a foil covered blade for the groin and underarm areas.

Trim the hair down as short as you prefer.

If you’re going for a clean shave, use the shortest guard. Tip: The more clipped, the less razor use.

shaving:

It’s best to do this in or after your shower. The warm water will soften the skin and relax the hair follicle. Exfoliate the area to remove dead skin cells and provide a closer shave. To help prevent razor burn or irritation, dab a pre-shave oil to the genital area. I’ve found that tea tree oil, KY or petroleum jelly work best as a barrier on your skin so the razor will glide easier.

Before shaving, make sure you apply a good quality shaving product like Gillette Fusion Hydragel. When it comes to the kind of razor, don’t use those disposable ones. Go for the 3- or 4-blade type with moisturizing strips and cushions. I recommend the Gillette Fusion or even the Venus Glide.

When shaving, pull the skin straight and taut with one hand and shave with the other.

You’ll want to shave against the hair growth.

Don’t go over an area repeatedly as this can cause irritation. In between strokes, be sure to rinse the blade.

Most importantly, use a fresh blade, go slowly and use very light strokes. Don’t use pressure.

When shaving the pubic area, pull your penis down and out of the way to protect you and make the area easier to shave. Make sure you move your “mister” to either side so you don’t miss any of the corner areas. Using the same methods, you can stretch your penis to get any stray hairs along the shaft or use tweezers.

Now, shaving the underside of your balls, perineum (aka taint) and butt crack is a bit tricky. There are a few maneuvers I’ve learned in order to properly access these areas.

The first is to put a floor length mirror on the floor and squat down over it so you can see your balls, your taint, the inside of your ass cheeks and more importantly, what you’re doing.

The second option is to lift a leg and support it on a ledge while in the tub or shower, allowing you to reach underneath.

The third option is to bend over, reach through your legs from behind your back. You will be pulling the razor towards the wall in back of you. At this point, you should be able to knock out the taint with little effort. Picture

hile we celebrate the beauty of Florida’s beaches, we can’t ignore the threat of the recent BP oil spill in the Gulf. Yeah, we didn’t make the mess. But as inhabitants of planet Earth, we all should pitch in and try to help clean it up.

east coast Daytona Beach is considered the world’s most famous beach. For years, MTV sponsored live broadcasts showing the Spring Break debauchery. Two seasons of the reality show The Real World featured both straight and LGBT housemates vacationing on the sand.

Daytona Beach is where several Guys Gone Wild videos have been shot, where drunk straight boys test the borders of their sexuality on a dare, for extra cash.

There’s more to Daytona Beach than just that. It has a famous boardwalk full of games, and it’s within a short distance of the famous NASCAR track. There are fresh seafood restaurants. Gay bars The Streamline Hotel, Hollywood Cantina, and the new Savoy Daytona are all near the beach.

However, these aren’t the only things to consider when planning your beach visit.

“I just go to the beaches with my friends. They’re predominantly straight; only a handful of my friends are gay,” says Carl Kwiatek.

Kwiatek and his friends have visited quiet New Smyrna Beach (mostly frequented by retirees) and the petfriendly Ponce Inlet Beach. More often, Kwiatek’s gang find themselves at the I Dream of Jeanie location, Cocoa Beach.

They claim a spot of sand within a short distance of Ron Jon’s Surf Shop and LGBT favorite Rainbow Room. Often, Kwiatek’s party drop their gear near Coconuts, a straight establishment whose strong drinks draw hotties both male and female.

The east coast also boasts Melbourne Beach, very popular with the natives.

Surfers and parasailers know Ponce Inlet is a great lesser-known spot. Paradise Beach is great for families—including LGBT with kids—but it’s not the only good choice.

“We’re not looking for hot bodies and huge crowds,” says Sherilyn Renziger, a Missouri lesbian who brings her daughters to visit Florida family every summer.

Quiet Ormond Beach is her most frequent choice.

“We want to be able to keep an eye on our kids,” Renziger says.

Those who have lived in St. Petersburg for more than a decade recall Bedrox, the popular LGBT bar that stood proudly on Sunset Beach. The iconic hotspot has since been torn down and replaced with a pavilion, but the beach itself is still where men and women go to play with like minded LGBTs every Sunday afternoon.

“I think this is a gay beach because

of the tradition behind it,” says Russell Grand, a Tampa resident who frequents the beach at least two Sundays a month.

“There are a few straight people who come down this far, but overall it’s a gay reunion spot for us.”

The popular beach—all the way on the south tip of W. Gulf Boulevard on Treasure Island—has metered parking and several neighborhood side streets where parking is free if you can find it.

The two mile drive along the beach also affords a chance to see the hot “straight” bodies of the young men and women frequenting Caddy’s, the county’s only bar zoned for serving alcohol on the beach.

Other beaches readily available for the rainbow crowd on the west coast include Fort DeSoto and Pass-A-Grille, which is on the southern tip of St. Pete Beach. The narrow island is only one

block wide but caters to a large group of LGBT sun-worshipers.

“Fort DeSoto is the perfect place for us to bring the kids,” says Tammy Draper, who lives in Madiera Beach with her partner, Amy, and their two sons. “It’s a clean park, family friendly and it’s just beautiful. We meet several other lesbian couples here who have kids. In fact, we’ve made some great friends by just showing up here on the weekends.”

Other “family”-friendly beaches along Florida’s west coast include the northern tip of Honeymoon Island near Dunedin (which is only accessible by a ferry) where braver souls—both male and female—sometimes swim sans the suits.

Of course, one of the more popular beaches for lesbians is Gulfport Beach, which is directly across from LGBT and LGBT-friendly bars and equipped with volleyball courts and ample parking.

“I think a younger lesbian crowd is more likely to be here,” says Rene Palo, a 24-year-old lesbian who lives in Gulfport. “We play volleyball, cook out and just relax. It’s true paradise here.” | l |

Frankly that your lover wants others to see you that way is yet a third question, but I only have so much space in which to respond.

Question 2 is about the validity of Pride Parades in general. Far be it from me (or you) to disparage an activity which provides a source of genuine pride to so many people in our community. Yes, the media always focuses on the outrageous 2% (in which your lover clearly wants you included), but that doesn’t mean that the public expression of pride and freedom is a hollow one. The Truth is also of the mind that we’re getting to a place where such expressions are becoming increasingly unnecessary as a way to shine light on the plight of gays and lesbians, particularly in large urban areas.

So again, only go if you want, and I agree that real pride in yourself has little to do with marching in a parade, but here comes the Truth: Pride parades mean a lot to a lot of people. You’re not one, and that’s okay.

Dear Truth, I have been dating my handsome boyfriend, Foster, for about two years and we have a really good relationship. He is very sweet and generous, and the sex is incredible. We rarely fight except when it comes to one thing: sports. Foster is a total jock and I am not. Memphis church bans lesbian from softball league staff report at Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront

Memphis, Tenn. | A women’s softball coach in Memphis said a church banned her team from its league after learning she was gay.

Jana Jacobson told The Commercial Appeal officials at Bellevue Baptist Church told her she had a “deviant’’ lifestyle and her team would not be allowed to compete in the church’s summer season. Jacobson said her team is made up of straight and gay players and that they were looking for more games to play when they discovered the Cordova church had a league.

Jacobson said she registered, paid the entry

fee and attended an organizational meeting.

Later, a church official called her seeking another meeting. At that one, officials began questioning whether she was gay.

“Finally, in my frustration, I said that I am going to be clear. I am gay, and I find all of this to be absurd and against the word of God as I know it,” Jacobson said of a meeting with Bellevue officials.

When she said she was, they told her the team could not play.

So far the church has not commented on the incident. Comments on the Commercial Appeal’s web site seem split on support for the church and support for Jacobson. | l |

Chicago | The annual Chicago Pride parade will see a few new participants and a new float during this year’s June 27 event. The Chicago Cubs of the National League announced it will have a float in the parade—which makes sense considering that the popular Boystown area of the city is within a mile of Wrigley Field.

Several members of the NHL Champion Chicago Blackhawks will also attend the festival, along with the Stanley Cup. Blackhawks President John McDonough is rerouting the Stanley Cup from the NHL draft in L.A. to the parade. Blackhawk defenseman Brent Sopel has volunteered to represent the team.

“I am honored to do it,” said Sopel, who will be accompanied by wife, Kelly, and his

four kids, Jacob, 12, Lyla, 8, Jayla, 6, and Paul, 20, whom they adopted three years ago.

“The power of the Cup is incomprehensible, and we recognize the importance of doing this,” said McDonough, who has arranged for the Stanley Cup to be flown back from the National Hockey League draft in Los Angeles 15 hours early. “It’s important for the city and important for the franchise.”

On the baseball front, this will mark the first time that the Cubs have officially participated in the Pride festivities and many credit new part-owner Laura Ricketts, who is a lesbian.

Straight Olympians join Equality Swim steve blanchard San Francisco, Calif. | Two Olympic gold-medal swimmers have endorsed an upcoming Equality Swim created by Equality California. Both Gary Hall and Lenny Krayzelburg are straight and have a history of supporting LGBT equality.

“I believe everyone should have equal protection under the law, no matter what their sexual orientation,” Hall said.

Hall said he is excited to see his two passions—swimming and the fight for equality—come together for one event.

Krayzelburg said that his support of the swim is centered on the fear so many LGBTs have of coming out in professional sports.

“I think this event gives the sport of

swimming a fun, fantastic way to stand up for equality,” he said. “I look at everyone, no matter what their sexual orientation, as equal.”

Both athletes said full equality means marriage rights for gays and lesbians.

The Equality Swim is on Sept. 25 and swimmers will swim 1.7 miles along the coast of Malibu to raise awareness and funds for LGBT rights. Out Olympic diver Greg Louganis is expected to attend and voiced his praise for the two divers.

“For me, sports is the perfect way to provide a message of a hopeful future to our community, particularly LGBTQ teens,” Louganis said. “I’m grateful to see so much support for the Swim for Equality, particularly from two Olympic heroes like Gary and Lenny.” | l |

his month, The National Enquirer had an eye-catching headline, “007 Is Gay!” I assume this one was about one of those lesser “007s”—like George Lazenby.

But, no, this story is about Daniel Craig—the current “James Bond.” Allegedly, someone saw him kissing a good looking man outside a gay bar in Venice, Calif. While the “eyewitness” does say he observed the couple from across a parking lot, he recalls a startling amount of details for someone trying to parallel park: “It was an open-mouth passionate French kiss. In fact, Daniel held the guy’s head in his hands and pulled him in for the kiss.” Who the hell was this witness? Jackie Collins?

And yet Mr. Craig and his longtime girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell just purchased a one-bedroom penthouse in NYC. How do these two items fit together? Ironically, the real estate agent who sold Danny the place happens to be former porn star Tag Eriksson.

The shocking part of this story is that Tag got a commission on a $1.9 million deal!

My favorite part of the night was having most of the AI winners (and a significant chorus of losers) sing “Together We Are One.” So, I’m counting the winners and I’m one short. I try again—same thing. Who is missing? I can’t think of anyone. It took me a good five minutes before I came up with the name David Cook—who was previously committed to perform at a cancer benefit out of state—and given this is the disease that claimed his brother’s life, one can’t fault him for that.

Some also-rans were strangely absent. I was looking for Nikki McKibbin (season one, third place), but apparently her invitation got lost in the mail. And yet the seventh place contestant from season two, Kimberly Caldwell, was front and center. No Daughtry.

No Kimberley Locke. No Clay Aiken. And what about Adam Lambert? First we heard he’s on “vocal rest”—but how much voice does someone need to sing in the choir with the other non-winners? Then he posted on Twitter that the AI invitation was, “You’ve not been asked to perform on the finale. Would you like to sit in the audience?” Call me skeptical, but I find it inconceivable that Lambert wasn’t invited to be in the chorus but someone invited Anoop! Really? I still say he simply didn’t want to be lumped in with the other past losers.

While many things about Bradley Cooper may be open to speculation, there’s no denying his beauteous bod. You look at him and say, “Now that’s a hot guy.” You know who else says that? Bradley! In an interview with Details magazine, he talks about the first time he saw his A-Team flick: “I swear to God, it looked like my head was digitally superimposed onto someone else’s body. I was like, ‘This cannot be me—that’s the way I look?’
