Commendation

2021 Tampa Pride Street Festival and Diversity Parade

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners is pleased to recognize the 2021 Tampa Pride Street Festival and Diversity Parade, family-friendly extravaganzas that celebrate Hillsborough County’s LGBTAQ diversity, inclusiveness, and love of all people. Now in its sixth year, the Tampa Pride Street Festival and Diversity Parade are for the entire Hillsborough County community. Held in historic Ybor City, these vibrant events on May 22 will double the fun for everyone, from morning through night. The Diversity Parade, with numerous colorful and creatively decorated floats, walking groups, and vehicles will wind its way along Ybor City’s major thoroughfares. The Street Festival will feature the Tampa Bay Pride Band, a wide variety of vendors, an Artisan & Crafts Show, Community Health Fair, Food Alley, and Tampa Pride at Night festivities, including a concert. The daylong celebration, which draws tens of thousands of people, gets bigger and better each year, with exciting new additions. It attracts numerous groups, including religious, civic, and nonprofit organizations, students, government officials, and local and international businesses. This year’s events carry even more significance, as this June marks the fifth anniversary of the tragedy at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, a Sister City. The Tampa Pride Street Festival and Diversity Parade proudly promote the county’s diversity, and are sources of great community pride. The Board of County Commissioners of Hillsborough County, Florida does hereby commend the 2021 Tampa Pride Street Festival and Diversity Parade for its community spirit, and extends its best wishes for another special day in the sun. You are here to support and help. There is no “us” or “them” anymore. This year we want everyone to experience what they missed for 14 months. A huge festival in two locations: the HCC Parking with the Health & Wellness Fair, Artisan Fair and the Cuban Club Courtyard with festival vendors and a full day of entertainment. Outdoor entertainment includes Pepper Mashay, J. Tyler and Jay Miah performing live. Performers will also take the stage indoors with top talent including Judy B. Goode, Christopher Knowlton, magic acts, live bands in the Cuban Club Cabaret and 3 Tito’s Bars and 1 Bud Lite Beer Bar. ome out, come out wherever you are! The 7th Annual TAMPA PRIDE FESTIVAL, HEALTH & WELLNESS FAIR, DIVERSITY PARADE AND THE NEW PRIDE AT NIGHT is May 22nd and EVERYBODY is INVITED! COVID has been a long, tragic health issue in our communities and the global pandemic is not over yet. Your rights! Your recognition. Your position. Your caring self to so many others. Now is the time to showcase who you are. To realize all the world is one. To help share our green, clean earth with the rest of our planet’s partners. Clean up the footprints we leave for a better tomorrow today, not for another day. Yes, you can start by getting involved in so many causes that you are invested in. Your life as an LGBTAQ person is one of those groups and organizations to be active in. NEW YEAR, NEW VISIONS TAMPA PRIDE KICKED OFF IN WILD STYLE!

T

RYAN WILLIAMS-JENT

TAMPA PRIDE 2021 SATURDAY, MAY 22

ampa Pride kicked off the organization’s sixth annual celebration Nov. 2, 2020 at ZooTampa at Lowry Park ahead of last year’s postponement. Organizers welcomed more than 350 supporters to “Wild Carnavale,” the second annual Pride Zoo-La which is sure to make its return. Guests enjoyed a silent auction, special performances and interactions with zoo animals, including a giraffe feeding. “This was one special event,” Tampa Pride President Carrie West reflects. “It’s made for everyone; it isn’t overpriced and it’s a sit down, quiet and early evening. We had a great time and it was a great turnout. We try giving everyone a little treat of what’s going on in our community.” Tampa Mayor Jane Castor was in attendance, a two-time Tampa Pride grand marshal and longtime supporter of the celebration. She proudly reflected on the status of Pride throughout Tampa Bay, discussing her election as Tampa’s 59th and first openly LGBTQ mayor.

Castor reflected on some of her inclusive accomplishments, like her executive order unveiled Aug. 14, 2019 at the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce’s International Business & Leadership Conference. She announced that Tampa would formally recognize LGBT businesses in contracting and procurement opportunities. “It really is through a partnership with all of our citizens that we’re able to get so much done and we’re able to lift our community up,” Castor shared. “I am so excited about our sixth Pride parade.” The gathering featured a wide variety of exciting and memorable entertainment, beginning with the Tampa Bay Pride Band. DJ Greg Anderson led the music and Grand Marshal Lady Janet and others fan favorites performed. “We came together with our many voices,” West says. “This year, we’ll come together as a community, we’ll come together as a country and we’ll come together as a world,” he continues. “Tampa Pride is going to be bigger than ever.”

MEET THE MARSHALS GRAND MARSHAL: BRADLEY NELSON It’s “always a good time at Bradley’s on 7th,” the Ybor City hotspot’s tagline reads, and owner Bradley Nelson says that’s because of the community it serves. The LGBTQ staple celebrated a full decade of laughter, libations and love in 2021. Nelson opened Bradley’s after retiring from corporate America and hasn’t looked back. “It’s exceeded my expectations,” he reflects. “People ask me all the time, ‘what’s my secret?’ and it’s the community. I did something for them and they latched onto it. It’s been amazing.” He sees Pride as a day of freedom, one dedicated to expressing that our community is flourishing. “I really appreciate the opportunity to represent everyone,” he says.

GRAND MARSHAL: RENEE COSSETTE Renee Cossette has proudly worked with the Tampa Bay International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (TIGLFF) for half of its more than three decades. Her role as festival director is critical in ensuring TIGLFF entertains, empowers and enlightens audiences year after year. The festival showcases the best in film by and for the LGBTQ community. Its last in-person festival presented 97 films from 25 different countries, screening five collections of short films, holding live events and welcoming local officials and national celebrities to locations in Tampa and St. Petersburg. In 2020, it was held virtually to ensure the safety of its supporters. “We do it because we love the community,” Cossette says. “I’m really honored.”

GRAND COUPLE:

SALLY PHILLIPS & ERCILIA ALBISTU The personal is political, Sally Phillips and Ercilia Albistu can attest. Since meeting more than 30 years ago, they have dedicated themselves to proving love is love. Phillips is the president emeritus of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus, an arm of the state’s Democratic Party which represents LGBTQ Floridians. She’s also the vice president of the Hillsborough County LGBTA Democratic Caucus, its chartered chapter. Albistu serves the two organizations as well, as Tampa’s regional director for the LGBTQ+ Caucus and as the communications chair for the LGBTA Caucus. The two have long advocated for equality in the city, state and nation, thankful to do so arm in arm.

COMMUNITY SUPPORTER:

CAROL “MAMA” STEEN

There’s a reason Carol Steen is known as Mama: she’s family. The lifelong ally has worked to better the lives of Tampa Bay’s LGBTQ community for 18 years, bartending in hotspots like Hamburger Mary’s Tampa, Bradley’s on 7th, Reservoir Bar and The Castle. “I got the nickname because if someone was displaced from their family, I would talk to them and be a part of their life,” she reflects. “You’re not alone; you have somebody. The community has accepted me and I accept them.” Steen has retired from the bar scene but still hosts an annual Thanksgiving for community members without a place to go, the largest of which welcomed more than 100 people. “Come as you are,” she says, “you just have to come hungry.”

COMMUNITY SUPPORTER:

BARDHA & FREDDY MAMUDI If you’ve eaten at the Tampa Bay fan favorite New York New York Pizza, you have owners Bardha and Freddy Mamudi to thank. The couple’s eatery has eight locations in Tampa Bay, including the Tampa International Airport, expanding from the Ybor City location which first opened in 2008. They’ve flourished because of the area’s LGBTQ community, they say. “We were just passionate about making pizza,” Bardha explains. “GaYbor came in and supported us,” she continues. “They took care of us and we became a family.”

Watermark has advanced LGBTQ interests for 25 years, printing up to 20,000 issues of our newspaper bi-weekly

Watermark Publishing Group also produces numerous annual specialty guides, including this one, and has maintained WatermarkOnline.com for more than 10 years. The newspaper proudly donates more than $200,000 annually in free and sponsor advertising to worthy local and national LGBTQ nonprofits. “We have been longtime supporters of Tampa Pride and work hard to make sure Tampa is represented as a thriving and inclusive city,” owner, publisher and editor Rick Todd says. “It is humbling and amazing to receive such an honor.”

COMMUNITY TRAILBLAZER: ANGELIQUE “LADY JANET” PADRO Angelique Padro, known to most as the fan favorite entertainer Lady Janet, has performed throughout Tampa Bay since 2009. She says she hasn’t stopped feeling the support since then, particularly in 2014 when she completed her transition and later enrolled in nursing school. “I went on this journey because I wanted a better quality of life, but most of all because I wanted to inspire my other trans sisters,” Padro says. “To let them know that we are capable to fulfill any job in any industry. Everything is possible with dedication and hard work.” Padro adds that she’ll always be thankful for Tampa Bay’s LGBTQ community. “I am who I am because of you,” she says.

COMMUNITY TRAILBLAZER: JAY CHETNEY

As a veteran of the Stonewall Riots, which launched the modern day LGBTQ civil rights movement more than 50 years ago in New York City, Jay Chetney understands the importance of community. He’s worked to better it most of his life. He’s returning the favor. Chetney, a trained pacifist, says other members of the community saved him after he was injured during the 1969 uprising. “I was rescued,” he recalls. “Stonewall finally became that galvanizing moment in history when we started having public discussions about our equality.” He returned to New York frequently afterwards, adopting his dear friend Frank Kameny’s chant of the first Pride parade. It’s a mantra he carries with him still: “Say it clear, say it loud— gay is good, gay is proud!”

CELEBRITY GRAND MARSHAL: EFFY

The wrestler also hosted EFFY’s Big Gay Brunch earlier this year, described as “the gayest event of WrestleMania week.” It highlighted a number of LGBTQ athletes including Edith Surreal, Devon Monroe, AC Mack, Dark Sheik and of course, EFFY himself. Over the course of the last year, EFFY also partnered with Twitch to highlight curated wrestling focusing on “the types of crazy outlaw pro wrestling you can’t find on your TV just yet.” As a grand marshal for Tampa Pride, he promises to bring all the crazy pro wrestling party spirit without ever losing energy for the future.

TAMPA PRIDE 2021 SATURDAY, MAY 22

Taylor Gibson is best known as the “very gay” EFFY, a nationally recognized independent, professional wrestler. It’s within that industry that he’s championed stronger LGBTQ representation for years.
