the year is here. It’s cliche to say, but when you live your life in two week cycles across two metropolitan areas—time flies. 2018 zoomed by in the blink of an eye.

Watermark did well in 2018. We saw an increase in sales, so thank you to the businesses and organizations that support us and help us to continue bringing the latest in LGBTQ news to our readers—and congratulations to Senior Account Manager Sam Callahan who had a stellar year. We also saw an increase in distributions sites and are now available at over 600 locations in Central Florida, Tampa Bay and surrounding areas. This year brought about a new product for Watermark, our Sarasota Living with Pride magazine. This was the first

in a series of lifestyle and destination magazines produced by the LGBTQ community for the LGBTQ community. Perhaps the biggest advancement for Watermark in 2018 was the opening of our St. Petersburg office in the Grand Central District. It’s not the first time Watermark has had a Tampa Bay office, but it is the first to host a staff of five employees. The excitement of our growth is palpable. Our staff also had an active year on a personal level. Business Manager Kathleen Sadler tied the knot. Art Director Jake Stevens was

Democrat, conservative, liberal and compromise are not bad words. We should stop pretending they are. I understand it’s tough if someone does not believe in the concept of basic human rights and equality, but I think that’s a great place to start the conversation. On the same token, can we stop calling people stupid and idiots for their opinions on things that are completely subjective? I’d like to see 2019 bring about real change to the alphabet soup of LGBTQ/LGBT+/LGBTQIIA+, etc. The pitfall of being inclusive is that you have to include everyone and including everyone individually will get problematic. I have no idea what one word would sum us up,

For the first time since 2016, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

but one word that is all inclusive is necessary. I would still be a gay man, but part of the “Insert Word Here” community. My roommate could say she is an ally and a member of said community. Let’s start that conversation. I want to see the first weekend in June become the biggest LGBTQ community inclusive event in the world. You created this event, Central Florida. It’s time to make it about the community and shine. Invite the world to join you! Finally—and this is to the Academy—can we make sure Lady Gaga wins Best Actress for her role in “A Star Is Born?” Thank you! This is Watermark’s annual Year in Review Issue. We recap local and national news with the headlines that defined us in 2018. We strive to bring you a variety of stories, your stories. I hope you enjoy this latest issue.

able to spend an extended amount of time with his New Hampshire family. He is so good at what he does; you may not have noticed he was abroad. Bureau Chief’s Ryan Williams-Jent and Jeremy Williams began journeys to healthier lives— let’s wish them luck and encourage their success! I became a bi-city resident of both Orlando and St. Pete, found someone to help me believe in love again and added the cutest puggle ever, Amber Atkins, to my family. 2018 was not all good news. What year ever is? We continue to see atrocities committed against our transgender community with a high number of unsolved murders here in our home state. Biased rhetoric and lies seem to trickle down from the highest levels of national leadership encouraging extreme polarization and outright hatred. Although for the first time since 2016, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We have incredible local leadership headed to Tallahassee to represent all of us. We have great local community leaders like Jennifer Foster, Jim Nixon, Nadine Smith and George Wallace who are working hard to elevate our community to thrive. Good people are doing good work to make 2019 our best year yet. As much as I would like to, I can’t predict the future. I can’t say for certain 2019 will be successful, but here are some things I would like to see happen. First, let’s actually drain the swamp. It’s time to expose the truth and remove bad leadership from office, whether it’s as local as the organization next door or the Commander in Chief. We deserve great leadership and we should always fight to have it on every level. In order to do this we have to value truth again. So, let’s start there. I’d like to see an end to the all or nothing culture. Republican,

Free Vaccine Department of Health offices offer free hepatitis A vaccinations Jeremy Williams

O

RLANDO | The Florida Department of Health (DOH) in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake and Brevard Counties announced they will offer free hepatitis A vaccinations to high-risk individuals, according to a Dec. 12 press release. Men who have sexual encounters with other men are among the list of high-risk groups, according to the DOH. Other groups include users of recreational drugs, those who are homeless, anyone with chronic or long-term liver disease and people with clotting-factor disorders. The DOH also recommends that all children at age one year, people who have direct contact with those who have hepatitis A, travelers to countries where hepatitis A is common and caregivers of adoptees from countries where hepatitis A is common should be vaccinated as well. “The hepatitis A virus is a vaccine-preventable disease. We continue to educate and encourage high-risk populations to get vaccinated and prevent hepatitis infection through our Hepatitis Prevention Program and community outreach,” said Donna Walsh, health officer for the Florida Department of Health in Seminole County, in the press release.

watermark Your LGBTQ life.

A spike in hepatitis A cases this year in Florida led to a public health advisory from Florida’s surgeon general in November. There have been 385 cases of hepatitis A statewide in 2018, up more than three times from the previous five-year average of 126 cases. In November, an employee at Morimoto Asia in Disney Springs was found to be infected with hepatitis A. Hepatitis A is a highly contagious disease that attacks the liver. People infected with hepatitis A are most contagious from two weeks before onset of symptoms to one week afterwards. Not everyone who is infected will have all the symptoms. Symptoms usually start within 28 days of exposure to the virus with a range of 15-50 days. Symptoms can include: jaundice (yellowing skin and whites of eyes), fever, diarrhea, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, stomach pain, dark-colored urine and pale or clay colored stool. The hepatitis A vaccine is the best method of preventing infection, says the DOH. Once infected, there is no cure to the disease. Anyone experiencing hepatitis A symptoms should seek medical care immediately. Most people get better over time but may need to be hospitalized. People that are exposed to hepatitis A may get the vaccine within 14 days of exposure to prevent infection.

Seeking Justice Arrest, charge made in murder of Londonn Moore Ryan Williams-Jent

N

orth Port, Fla. | The North Port Police Department (NPPD) announced Dec. 19 that Juan Salazar-Diaz had been arrested and charged with the murder of Londonn Moore, the fifth reported transgender woman of color murdered in Florida this year. Moore was found shot to death Sept. 8, miles from her hometown of Port Charlotte in Sarasota County’s North Port. Her vehicle was discovered in Punta Gorda two days later. According to NPPD’s release, Punta Gorda resident Salazar-Diaz was charged with second-degree murder, grand theft auto and possession of a firearm by a felon. They advise the arrest was a result of diligent investigative work and DNA evidence. “Detectives were able to verify the last number called by the victim was to Salazar,” the release notes. It further cites that Salazar “lives less than a quarter mile” from where Moore’s car was found and that DNA

evidence implicating Salazar was discovered on multiple items. “I’m very proud and thankful for everyone who has contributed to this case,” NPPD Chief Todd Garrison said in a statement. “They’ve all spent long hours making this investigation a top priority. We’ve worked hard and will continue to insure justice is served for our victim and their family.” “While an arrest in this tragedy will certainly bring some much needed closure for the family, I also hope it will bring some peace of mind to the local LGBTQ community, particularly the local trans community,” ALSO Youth Executive Director Nathan Bruemmer tells Watermark. “Our youth and their families would appreciate an open dialogue to better understand what policies and practices are in place and what sort of training NPPD, and our other local agencies, have received in working with the transgender community.” NPPD advises that they have “taken steps to ensure rights for transgender individuals through policy,” a part of which “states that if someone identifies as a man or woman, we will respect their

wishes.” In the same release, Moore is misgendered and NPPD utilizes her “dead name,” a name given to a transgender individual at birth which may not align with their gender identity. “All the information we have is that our victim did not identify as a transgender woman,” the release notes. “With that said, we have included the name [Londonn Moore] in our outreach efforts … We certainly respect the LGBTQ+ community.” “It continues to be disappointing to the transgender community across the country,” Equality Florida Director of Transgender Equality Gina Duncan says, “and specifically in Florida, that law enforcement continues to violate their own policies issued by the Department of Justice in reference to properly identifying transgender victims. While we appreciate NPPD’s efforts in both addressing the anti-transgender violence as well as working with the media, they still have a ways to go in reference to getting it right.” Of the five trans women of color murdered in Florida this year, Moore’s case is the only one to date to have a suspect arrested. NPPD notes that while they have been thorough and patient to ensure justice is served, “it is possible that others may have been involved or know more about this case.” Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Detective Chris Maki at 941-429-7323 or cmaki@northportpd.com.

AckSONviLLe, fla. | The Jacksonville Area Sexual Minority Youth Network (JASMYN) began construction on a $700,000 renovation project in the city’s Riverside neighborhood Dec. 10 which will help to support the area’s LGBTQ homeless youth.

The center will be in a newly acquired building adjacent to JASMYN’s existing two-building campus at Peninsular Place and Chelsea Street in Riverside. JASMYN exists to create a safer, more affirming community for LGBTQ youth between the ages of 13-23 in Northeast Florida. Homeless youth in Jacksonville is up 145 percent over the last

year—85 percent of which identify as LGBTQ, said JASMYN CEO Cindy Watson to the Florida Times-Union. The Youth Safety Net Resource Center is expected to open in 2019, the same year JASMYN celebrates its 25th anniversary.

OUT INDIANA MAYOR WON’T SEEK 3RD TERM, FUELING 2020 SPECULATION Wire Report

S

Outh beND, ind. | The mayor of South Bend, Indiana, said Dec. 17 that he will not seek a third term, fueling speculation he may run for president in 2020. Pete Buttigieg, an openly gay 36-year-old who gained national attention as he campaigned for Democratic National Committee

chairman last year, declined to comment on his future political plans. He said he doesn’t expect to make any announcements before January. Asked whether he’d comment about a possible presidential bid, he smiled and replied “nope.” Buttigieg authored a book that’s scheduled to be released in February about his life and experience as mayor of the

northwest Indiana community of roughly 100,000. Buttigieg is a Rhodes Scholar who won his first term in 2011, at age 29. In 2015 he publicly announced he was gay in a newspaper column. Five months later he won his second term as mayor with more than 80 percent of the vote. He married his husband, Chasten Glezman, in June. Buttigieg also served as a Naval Reserve officer in Afghanistan in 2014.

SAME-SEX COUPLES EXCHANGE VOWS IN BRAZIL Wire Report

S

AO pAuLO (Ap) | About forty same-sex couples got married in downtown Sao Paulo on Dec. 15, tying the knot partly out of fear that the new administration of President-elect Jair Bolsonaro could restrict same-sex marriage.

Although his campaign did not express views against marriage equality, Bolsonaro’s record of homophobic comments has caused alarm. Dozens of people exchanged vows during a collective ceremony held at Casa1, an NGO that provides support to disadvantaged LGBT youth.

Casa1 launched a campaign a few weeks ago to hold the ceremony “in the face of the political situation” and raised almost $12,000 to cover expenses. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Brazil since May 2013. Bolsonaro takes office on Jan. 1.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year hRiStmAStime iS my

second favorite time of the year. My favorite holiday has always been Halloween, but all of the cliches during “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” put me in the jolly spirit every November and December.

I enjoy shopping for gifts (which may be in large part to the miracle that is online retailers), spending time with those closest to me and I am always proud to have one of the brightest homes on the block. I feel like I’m finally the adult that I always wanted to be. But it wasn’t always that way. Like many LGBTQ people, the holidays were more stressful for me than most of my family ever imagined. The most difficult time was during the period where I had quietly accepted my sexuality but had yet to reveal my true self to the rest of the family. We have all been there. You present only a part of your true self to the family while keeping a majority of who you really are repressed. One of the scenes that I most relate to in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” – arguably the best Christmas movie ever – is when the in-laws arrive. They meet the Griswold family with loud greetings, uncomfortable hugs and requests for strange favors like rubbing a bunion for a whole quarter! In real life I have thankfully never been asked to rub anything on an elderly relative. But every holiday had the awkward hugs with family members, the uncomfortable inquiries into my dating life and the ongoing socially-conservative conversations that caused

minor damage to my tongue as I bit down to keep it from expressing my horror at some of their viewpoints. Fortunately, it has been years since I’ve been in that situation. While I love my family, I learned a long time ago that I get along better with them when there are several state lines separating us. I’m of the belief that we should all be free to choose our family and that is how I’ve lived my life for nearly two decades. And even in that time span, my chosen family has evolved over time. As we head into the holidays, I have a message for the allies in our more socially-conservative families. Remember that we certainly need your support, especially in these times where everything can be politicized. Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) has some great tips for those who want to support their LGBTQ relatives. It can be a small gesture like steering a conversation away from an uncomfortable subject to openly discussing a favorite LGBTQ character on television. Even those small actions can make an LGBTQ person relax, even if it’s just for a little while. Of course, I’m not saying that all family gatherings are awful. I have many great memories of Christmas while I was growing up. Fun with my cousins, tons of presents, special nights around a fire and the Christmas tree with my parents – all are treasures in my mind and memories I would never wish to lose. I had a great childhood and was fortunate to have that kind of life through my teens. I would never tell anyone to ditch their family. If you have the love and support that helps you become the best version of you that is possible then hang onto that. But don’t be afraid to add those who are not blood-related to your family. True, I miss out on which cousin is pregnant or what uncle is doing what with his career. But I figure it’s a fair trade to have a lower-stress holiday season and be around the people who I know accept me for who I am rather than what they expect me to be.

I have a message for the allies in our more socially-conservative families … we certainly need your support, especially in these times where everything can be politicized. I understand that it’s not always an easy thing to do, but it is worth it in the long run. We have a new year on the horizon and that means there

are endless possibilities and experiences ahead that will create more memories in our future. It’s up to you to choose with whom to share those

soon-to-be memories. Have a safe and wonderful holiday season, no matter what your tradition or family situation.

Thoughts & Prayers We look back on 2018, a midterm year for a country that’s just living on a prayer

I

Jeremy Williams and Ryan Williams-Jent

t’s been two years since we, as

a country, entered into the reality that is the Trump Administration. The country feels more divided than ever and the phrases “fake news” and “it’s all a witch hunt” are commonplace.

The violence that seems to define who Americans are these days is also there, particularly in Florida, where there has been no justice for the five transgender women of color who were murdered and yet another mass

shooting—this time at a high school in Parkland, Fla.—pulled the focus of the world to our state. Through the tragedy heroes and leaders emerged. Parkland students helped spark a movement across the country

watermark Your LGBTQ life.

that ignited their generation to take a stand. Last year’s #MeToo movement helped more women to run, and get elected, to political office in local, state and national elections. Additionally, Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump White House is proving this witch hunt is loaded with witches. Look back with us on a year that was anything but calm, but remember we’re half way there— we’ll make it, we swear. Continued on pg. 21 | uu |

atermark begins the year by examining how the LGBTQ community is impacted by 365 days of Donald Trump’s presidency. We speak with political candidates Anna Eskamani and Jennifer Webb, now both elected to the Florida House, about how to shape a brighter 2018. In Central Florida, Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith kicks off his re-election campaign in Orlando. “It has been a heck of a year serving you all in the Florida House of Representatives,” Smith says, something he continues to do given the campaign’s success. In Tampa Bay, Mayor Rick Kriseman and the city’s first female-majority city council are sworn in at St. Petersburg City Hall. Brandi Gabbard, Gina Driscoll, Darden Rice and Amy Foster assemble at the city dais. “Women bring a different negotiating style,” Rice says, “and typically, a different perspective.” The ugly side of politics also rears its head early in 2018. Fallout continues from Donald Trump’s unexplained decision to terminate all members of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS via a letter from FedEx.

ove is in the air and on our pages in February. Watermark chooses 10 bachelors and bachelorettes from Central Florida and Tampa Bay to give them their due for our inaugural “most eligible” issue. We also celebrate with our first “Swipe Right” party. The month continues with an homage to five generations of black entertainers in Orlando. The Human Rights Campaign comes to Central Florida to host Time to THRIVE in Orlando. The organization presents the fifth annual LGBTQ youth conference in partnership with the National Education Association and the American Counseling Association, even as an anti-LGBTQ ministry announces it would host an adoption event in the same city later in 2018. Tampa Bay agrees that children are the future. Metro Wellness and Community Centers partners with the Gay, Lesbian

to the mass shootings in Parkland and at Pulse. The LGBT+ Center Orlando, Inc.’s board of directors announces that it will expand into Osceola County with an LGBT+ Center in Kissimmee. The expansion was a result of a grant from The Contigo Fund, which emerged in the aftermath of the Pulse tragedy. The University of South Florida in Tampa holds its inaugural Lavender Graduation ceremony, honoring students within the LGBTQ community and their allies. Over 150 undergraduate and graduate students, staff members and community advocates gather for the ceremony. Gainesville becomes the first city in northern Florida to ban the discredited practice of conversion therapy for minors. The ordinance prohibits “licensed professionals from engaging in counseling efforts, practices or treatments with the goal to change a minor’s sexual orientation or gender identity.”

favorites from Central Florida and Tampa Bay. Students from the latter area also march for their lives at the fourth annual Tampa Pride, demanding an end to gun violence. With an eye on November, the Pride Fund to End Gun Violence—America’s only LGBTQ organization solely focused on gun policy reform—looks to the midterms for answers in Central Florida. The organization backs Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith and Anna Eskamani. In Tampa Bay, Republican Ronda Storms—who spearheaded Hillsborough County’s now-defunct ban on recognizing LGBTQ Pride—announces her candidacy for Florida House District 59. Asked for her message

to LGBTQ voters, she tells Watermark to look at her record. Dean Trantalis becomes Fort Lauderdale’s first openly gay mayor following a heated election season, signaling a Rainbow Wave could follow in November. Community advocates call it a win for the entire LGBTQ community. News quickly spreads that the U.S. military accepts an openly transgender recruit, a first. It’s a development that follows federal court rulings against Donald Trump’s transgender military ban.

Maynard-Harris was in charge of sifting remains with the chief medical examiner. Orlando remembers as the onePULSE Foundation opens the Pulse Interim Memorial to the public with a dedication ceremony. The foundation is joined by Pulse victims’ family members, survivors, first responders and community leaders for a special dedication. Tampa’s former chief of police and openly LGBTQ Jane Castor announces her candidacy for Tampa mayor. “Voters have had 31 years to test drive me and I’ve been the same,” Castor tells Watermark. Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin signs the first anti-LGBTQ law of 2018, a “religious freedom” bill enabling taxpayer-funded adoption agencies to deny placement into LGBTQ homes. Catholic adoption agencies who say they will have to close if forced to place children with LGBTQ adoptive parents support the law.

ride month is in full effect. With changes coming to Orlando’s Big Gay Weekend in 2019, Watermark begins June by looking back at the history of Gay Day at the Magic Kingdom. The celebration continues in Tampa Bay as St. Pete Pride celebrates its Sweet 16 in downtown St. Petersburg and the Grand Central District. The Orange County Regional History Center presents a special, limited exhibit “Another Year Passes: Orlando After the Pulse Nightclub Massacre” commemorating two years since the Pulse tragedy. It includes over 200 images and items collected at memorial sites throughout Orlando as well as community artwork and international tributes. In Tampa Bay, Pinellas-Pasco circuit judgeship candidate Donald McBath reiterates his anti-LGBTQ views ahead of the 2018 primary election. McBath notes that “if the homosexual continues committing the sin of sodomy, his soul faces eternal damnation.” Antash’a English, a 38-year-old transgender woman, is fatally shot in Jacksonville. She becomes the 12th reported transgender homicide victim in 2018 and continues the disturbing Florida trend. In a 7-2 decision written by U.S. Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy, the Supreme Court sidesteps a major ruling in the Masterpiece Cakeshop case. The court issues a narrow decision based on the facts of the lawsuit in favor of a Colorado baker sued for refusing to make a wedding came for a same-sex couple.

M

feel like a human,” Timothy Wilcots, known worldwide as “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alum and “All Stars 4” competitor Latrice Royale, says about the passage of Florida’s Amendment 4. “To feel like my debt is paid. I don’t have this scarlet letter haunting and taunting my life every time an election comes around. Now I can participate!”

While the Florida resident has certainly participated in “Drag Race” – placing fourth and snagging Miss Congeniality in season four, returning for inaugural spin-offs “All Stars” and the “Holi-slay Spectacular” and sashaying through tours like “A Drag Queen Christmas” – Royale’s voting rights were

Now here we are again, in a situation where we need to fight for our lives – our trans sisters’ lives, our trans brothers’ lives. It’s become more of a fight and more of what we used to do, as far as getting the community together and breaking down barriers and stereotypes.

| uu | Royal ‘T’ from pg.31 disagrees, advocates like the American Civil Liberties Union say it should go into effect Jan. 8. Before then, Royale will make her seasonal stop for “A Drag Queen Christmas, The Naughty Tour,” where she and six other “Drag Race” entertainers will rock the catwalk at The Plaza Live in Orlando Dec. 27 and at the Straz Center in Tampa Dec. 28. Watermark caught up with the queen ahead of the shows for the full “t” on the tour, “All Stars 4” and the restoration of Royale’s rights.

Is that why you’ve been open about your personal journey with Amendment 4?

The reason I’m an open book about that is because my story is not just my story; there are 1.6 million other ex-cons who were in the same situation. Because I didn’t have a voice it was important for me to encourage and convey the importance of voting to those who did. I think a lot of people were shocked to find out that our voters rights were taken away. Once I knew Amendment 4 was on the table I was encouraging people to vote and it passed – that showed me so much promise, because now we have a situation where we have a voice and now change can really happen.

WATERMARK: You’ve been busy since “Drag Race” season four. How do you find time to balance the werk-load?

Latrice Royale: It’s not easy [Laughs]. Luckily I do have an amazing husband and partner who understands the business and is supportive and helpful in every way. That makes it easier, but the challenge obviously is the balance of the work versus your personal life. Or lack thereof. But when you have someone who gets it that’s the sacrifice you make. It’s all for the greater good, so we hold onto our values, know where we stand and what we’re working for. That keeps us and everything we do in perspective, and sometimes you just have to say no and take a break. I don’t like that word, but sometimes you’ve gotta do it. Your Christmas spirit didn’t take a break this year. What led you back to “The Naughty Tour?”

This is my third consecutive year with “Drag Queen Christmas” and it’s one of my favorite tours to do because I’m living my full fantasy on stage. They let you be fully creative in what you want to do and they help your vision come alive. I get to twirl my flags and rifles and really do what I love to do on the stage and give the audience what they want. It’s really easy for me to say yes to this tour because I get creative freedom to do me. What about the “Holi-Slay Spectacular?”

I was really surprised – well, not surprised – when they told me they wanted me to be a part of it. I was gagging because I was already in the middle of filming “All Stars.” I was like, “what? How am I going to do this?” They were like, “oh, no worries… we spoke to your husband and he’s going to ship everything

How does it feel?

L4trice: Latrice Royale placed fourth in “RuPaul’s Drag Race” season four and is currently appearing on VH1 for its spinoff “All Stars 4” as she tours with “A Drag Queen Christmas.” Photo courtesy of lri talent & management from home.” I just said, “well, since y’all have got it figured out, let me know what I’m doing.” So it was awesome just to be involved and selected by Ru, because RuPaul does select the girls he wants to play with. It’s an honor to always be front and center on his mind; on his scope and radar.

You were originally offered “All Stars 3” but turned it down, right?

I did, yeah. The time was not exactly good and I was like I don’t need to do this. I had three of my clients who were selected to go on. So it was just a conflict of interest. What do I look like competing against my own clients? Now I don’t have that issue so here I am. How did you approach “All Stars 4?” What was different this time?

I wanted to have fun and I wasn’t going to be on a team, so. That was the number one motivational aspect

of it. But yeah, I wanted to represent me and not have to worry about being attached to someone else with my fate being theirs and vice versa.

Do you have a preference for the camera or stage?

On camera is more beneficial because you reach more people faster; they see you. But the stage is where we live. That’s where we really get to show our artistic sides – those of us who have it … and that was some shade. It really does give us the opportunity to grow as artists and I have found that I am really transitioning out of the club scene. I don’t enjoy the clubs as much as I used to. I’ve been doing that my entire drag career, over 26 years I’ve been in the club. The theater is where I belong. Where my drag belongs. How so?

You just get a different sense of who you are and your brand. I’m not bringing my lovely garments,

watermark Your LGBTQ life.

dragging them through beer and piss at the bar, when I have this lovely stage here with dressing rooms and lights. It just changes it all; I’m really into the theater gigs; I’m really focusing on continuing to develop my one-woman shows and grow those to the way that I want them and get up to my full fantasy level. That’s what I’m focusing on next.

What are your thoughts on the current drag scene?

Because it has become such a phenomenon and has transcended through all genders, ages and basically every walk of life, it’s huge. There’s room to do whatever it is that you want to do as a queen. However these young queens that are coming out – I don’t think they really grasp what drag stands for now. In this political climate, we really have to step forward and be leaders again. We were the ones that started the revolution, honey, we fought back.

Decemb er 27, 2018 - J a nua ry 9, 2019 // Issue 25. 26

There’s really promise that, now that we can unleash these voices that have been inside us for all these years, that you’re human again. You’ve paid your price and paid your crime. I’m a productive member of society, I’ve paid my taxes – lord knows I’ve paid my taxes. If you take my money, I get to have a say about how it’s spent, you know what I mean? I should have a say.We didn’t ace it with all of the results, but we made progress. Let’s celebrate the progress that we’ve made and really make some change now. Let’s do it. What else are you doing? What’s next for Ms. Royale?

There’s so much coming up for me, I have been dabbling in so many different things. There aredefinitely more of my one-woman shows coming. I have been working on projects and writing in the writer’s room; enjoying the other side of Hollywood, which is amazing. It’s a lot to watch out for, so you stay tuned. Latrice is doing some big things and working on some lovely projects with some very influential people. As for “All Stars,” y’all get ready because the big show’s coming. You can deck the halls with Latrice Royale in “A Drag Queen Christmas, The Naughty Tour,” presented by Murray & Peter, at The Plaza Live in Orlando Dec. 27 or at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa Dec. 28. For more information or to buy tickets, visit DragFans.com. “All Stars 4” is now airing on VH1.

“A

t the eND Of the DAy,” the wiNNeR Of the 29th ANNuAL Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival’s (TIGLFF) Audience Award for best feature film, will return to the big screen in Lakeland this coming new year. The film is Lakeland filmmaker and LGBTQ ally Kevin O’Brien’s feature directorial debut. It follows “a conservative, Christian professor who finds himself planted in an LGBTQ support group to stop their opening of an LGBTQ homeless youth shelter in their small town,” the synopsis reads. “For the first time, he’s met face-to-face with the community he has been counseling against his entire career,” it continues. “The awkward and emotional experiences that follow reveal that life and love are not as black and white as he first thought.” It was filmed in Lakeland and Orlando with area cast and crew, many of whom identify as LGBTQ. “This movie is for the LGBTQ community, LGBTQ people who have faced religious rejection in any form, and for their allies, or people who think they might be stereotyping those people,” O’Brien told Watermark ahead of TIGLFF 29. “It’s for parents who have had kids come out and they’re working through what that means for them and their future. It’s for transgender kids who are afraid to come out because they think it’s not worth it.” “At the End of the Day” is currently scheduled to play for a sold out audience Jan. 2 at Cinemark Lakeland Square Mall. Due to overwhelming demand, an encore showing has been scheduled for the following week on Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are currently available for $11, but the encore showing will only screen if enough seats are sold by Jan. 2. he ORLANDO iNteRNAtiONAL fRiNGe feStivAL—the LONGeSt RuNNiNG Fringe Theatre Festival in the U.S.—is preparing for Winter Mini-Fest, which plays at Loch Haven Park Jan. 10-13, 2019, at the moment but that isn’t stopping information from coming out about the main festival in May. The 14-day arts festival packs so much crazy, uncensored, experimental, amazing theatre into its schedule that Loch Haven Park cannot contain all of it so Orlando Fringe ventures out into the city and theater locations are set up throughout Orlando. The LGBT+ Center of Central Florida announced it will be home to a new Orlando Fringe venue for the festival’s 28th season. The 40-seat theatre will be called the Rainbow Venue. Interested parties can email The Center’s Executive Director George Wallace at George@TheCenterOrlando.org for an application.

eimy miLANeS AND heR wife

Pamela had a rather interesting agreement when it came time for wedding proposals. The pair first met at work in 2014 and became very close friends.

“Once we realized we wanted to spend forever together, the topic of proposing came up various times,” Keimy, a Wellness Manager from Miami, shares. “In those conversations we both agreed that even when one proposed to the other first, the other would still propose so that we both get our own special moment and engagement ring.” So it played out after Pamela popped the question to Keimy in Iceland in 2016, and Keimy, in turn, proposed to Pamela in Paris in 2017. Two engagements! It was a match. “There isn’t a specific day I can think back to that made me realize we were going to marry each other,” says Pamela, a nurse, originally from Santiago, Dominican Republic. “It just perfectly fell into place. We

started planning our individual futures with each other in mind. It became a life with her and I never questioned it after that realization.” The couple married in Nov. 2018. They now live in Orlando. “There just came a day where even when we had disagreements, I knew that we would just need to talk things out and work through it because for me breaking up or taking a break never seemed like an option like it did in previous relationships,” Keimy says. “When I would talk about the future it never felt like, well, if we are still together; the mentality was always we will do this or that together.” The two stuck to that plan when they came up against a challenge for their wedding day: Pamela’s mother would not be attending the wedding, due to the couple’s

relationship going against her own religious beliefs. “Even with a month left to go until the wedding, Pamela asked her mom one last time if she would consider going to the wedding. Once again her mom said no,” Keimy says. This is where the narrative takes a surprising turn. Keimy shares, “With about two weeks to go, Pamela’s mom messaged me on Facebook asking me to give her a call. She expressed to me that she had been having a hard time knowing she hasn’t supported her daughter and wanted to ask my permission if her and Pamela’s father could attend the wedding on short notice.” Keimy continues, “I told her they were absolutely welcome to attend and even suggested to her that they walk her down the aisle and keep the whole thing a surprise until they day of. This whole time, Pamela’s best friend’s dad, Pablo, was the one that was going to walk Pamela down the aisle in the absence of her parents. The day of the wedding just as Pamela was about to walk down the aisle with Pablo, her mom tapped her on the shoulder from behind.” Cue the goosebumps! “When Pamela turned around, she broke into tears as she saw her mom and dad standing there ready to walk her down the aisle,” Keimy tells. “They overcame their prejudice and decided to celebrate our love with us, even after telling us they wouldn’t be there due to their beliefs. It was beautiful and love truly did overcome it all.” Pamela shared her story on social media after the wedding and it quickly went viral with millions of views to her shock. “The thousands of followers we have received, comments of support and even messages from random strangers thanking us for sharing our story and inspiring them, has really left us in awe!”
