DO YOU HAVE THAT ONE TEACHER who changed your life? For me it was Mr. Morgan, eighth-grade history at Maitland Middle School. I met him at a pivotal point in my life.

When I was a kid, we moved around a lot. I wasn’t a military brat or anything, but for some reason or another I went to a series of different schools in consecutive years. We had moved to Orlando from Houston, Texas just two years prior. I spent the sixth grade at Cheney Elementary School, then off to Glenridge Middle School for seventh grade. That transition wasn’t so bad as some of my friends from Cheney ended up at Glenridge as well.

At some point between seventh and eighth grades, school districts changed and I was to leave Glenridge Middle School for Maitland Middle School. It was a tough pill to swallow for this shy

kid who spent two years making a group of friends. If memory serves, my mom tried to get them to keep me at Glenridge, but it was a hard no.

To say I was shy was an understatement. I was an outgoing kid when I lived in Houston, but the older I got and the more I realized I was gay, the more reclusive I became. Being new to a school was not helping me.

I wasn’t the only new kid on the block. Turns out Mr. Morgan was entering his first year of teaching, fresh out of school. I’m not sure if that made us kindred spirits or that there was some sort of subliminal pity we took on

each other to make each other’s lives less miserable, but we hit it off.

He seemed to believe in me and I was there for him when he seemed to be struggling with the rest of the class. He knew he could always call on me. Mr. Morgan became our school’s volleyball coach and encouraged me to join the team. His encouragement made me feel like I belonged, like I was needed.

As a teacher he made me feel smart because he made learning fun. My grades increased from mostly C’s at Glenridge to straight A’s. His excitement for history became my excitement for history. It’s not groundbreaking to say that if you study history you are less likely to repeat its mistakes, but it was his mantra. History, he believed, is what could make us smarter — and he was right.

I was reminded of this recently while watching the Max docuseries “Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York.” It’s a show that highlights the victims of these brutal New York murders of the 1990s. The documentarians spend a good deal of time covering the general vitriol towards the queer community, speculating why people felt so comfortable displaying such hate.

They go back to the days of Anita Bryant, the orange juice spokesperson turned anti-LGBTQ+ crusader. She is portrayed as a crazy outlier who is looked down upon nationally. Her mission was to overturn LGBTQ+ protections passed in Miami while keeping the queer community away from children. She was able to garner enough local support to make it happen, and for decades we suffered that loss. Does that all sound a little too familiar? The focus right now is on the drag community and the

false perception that they are somehow harmful to children. The focus is now on parents who want to provide gender-affirming care for the child they know and love, and the perception that they are somehow harmful to children. Here we are, Florida. History trying to repeat itself.

We can’t dismiss this fight if we aren’t drag queens. We can’t dismiss this fight if we aren’t trans or parents of trans kids. We are all connected. When one of us is pushed back in the closet, we all take steps toward the same fate.

We know the decades of struggle we face when we let hate win, so we must actively stand

together and defeat the hate that looks to defeat us.

I went back to Maitland Middle to catch up with Mr. Morgan after I graduated college. I learned he passed away unexpectedly of a brain aneurism. I regretted never getting the chance to tell him how much that year meant to me and the huge impact he had on my life, but I hope he somehow knew.

Every year Watermark picks a topic to cover in a photo essay. This year we let the talented Dylan Todd work his magic with local cosplayers. I’m sure you will find his work fascinating.

ST. DOROTHY CATHOLIC COMMUNITY TO HOLD SPECIAL TRANS, DRAG SERVICES

ORLANDO | Starting next month, an independent Catholic community in Central Florida will be hosting special religious services geared toward the LGBTQ+ community.

St. Dorothy Catholic Community in Orlando, which is not under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orlando, has been an open and accepting house of worship for the queer community.

“We are members of the Body of Christ, a Eucharistic and sacramental community who celebrate love without judgment flowing from Catholic Apostolic tradition that is theologically sound, visionary, progressive and evolving,” the church states on their website. “We hold being accepting, affirming, inclusive, forgiving and healing to be our core values.”

The church’s parishioners voted to make the third Sunday of each month a special service dedicated to those in the drag and transgender communities.

“Considering all the recent political happenings across the country which have affected these two communities, the parishioners felt that while protests, civil disobedience and gatherings are all well and good and definitely needed, a spiritual piece was also needed to combat the laws, hatred, etc. which these communities have endured and continue to endure,” St. Dorothy’s said in a press release.

At these liturgies, special prayers will be said, honoring those who have passed away in the community due to bigotry and hatred. General prayers will also be provided as well as space to welcome the communities where unconditional love will be shared and practiced.

St. Dorothy will also be offering baptisms to anyone in the trans community who wishes to be baptized with their new/reborn identity, stating they “want to reaffirm through the Sacrament of Baptism that new emerging person.”

“Christ went after those that were being objected to, they were being maligned, or the outcasts. That’s who we are trying to reach out to,” says Father James F. Profirio-Bond, pastor of St. Dorothy. “That they have a safe place to come worship if they so desire. Every Sunday, but we’ll dedicate one Sunday a month. It would be specifically for those of the trans and drag community so that they feel a safe place to come. I know that many of them have been injured from their respected past faiths. As I said, a safe place for them to come worship. We don’t judge.”

The trans- and drag-focused mass will be on the third Sunday of each month starting Aug. 20.

Trot for Trans Lives set to wrap in Orlando Emily Paul

Dobbs is set to finish his 2,700-mile TRANScontinential Run from California to Florida with a 5k run in Orlando July 29.

The Trot for Trans Lives: The Finish Line, is being hosted in partnership with The Pride Cup and the National Center for Transgender Equality. The run will be held at Luminary Green Park starting at 8 a.m.

Proceeds from the run will go to Divas in Dialogue, Queer Trans Project, Southern Legal Counsel, Contigo Fund, SPEKTRUM and Color Me Queer — all Florida-based, trans-focused groups.

Dobbs started his journey across the country March 4. He says that the purpose of the run is to fight for inclusion of trans people in sports and access to gender-affirming health care. The

route has taken Dobbs through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida. Some of these states were among those that have proposed and passed anti-trans legislation.

“When I had the dream to do this run, I had no idea that I would do it during the year of the most anti-trans legislation and rhetoric that we have ever seen in the history of our country,” Dobbs says. “Even though it seems like the worst time to be a trans person running across America for trans rights, it also feels like the best time. I can use this run as a platform to uplift the voices of trans people that are being silenced, to bring love and support, and to also honor a childhood dream for me now being my most authentic self as a trans person.”

He says that each Trot for Trans Lives run they have done along the way has been bigger than the previous one, showing people really care about the trans

CAUSE: Cal Dobbs ran thousands of miles to raise awareness of trans issues in the U.S.

community and that the run is a simple way to show up in support.

“I think it really reflects a deep desire that most people have to do something to support the trans community. We are the hottest topic; everyone is talking about trans people but nobody is talking to trans people. I think it can make people feel really helpless when they see a community under attack and they don’t know what they can do. This run provides people a place where they can take real action that’s going to have a positive impact on the people that need it most. It’s not just about raising money, it’s about building community,” Dobbs says.

In a time where the news can be discouraging to LGBTQ+ people, Dobbs wants to remind others that they aren’t alone. He says that while there is so much hatred towards the trans community, the antidote is love and connection and that’s what he hopes the run provides.

There will also be a trans athletes panel entitled “Trans Joy: The Heart of the Game” held at Live Oak Ballroom at UCF July 28 at 6 p.m.

“Queer joy and trans joy is rebellion, it is resistance. If you care about the LGBTQ+ community this is a really easy way to show up,” Dobbs says.

EQUALITY FLORIDA PROJECT SHOWS ‘DRAG IS NOT A CRIME’

ST. PETERSBURG | Equality Florida mobilized supporters for a “Drag is Not a Crime” event June 21 at The Werk Gallery, a show of solidarity as attacks on the art form mount across the state.

The project “came to fruition as more and more allies to the drag community asked how best to show their support for an art form they love,” Equality Florida says. The event was the organization’s second, following a June 16 photoshoot during Stonewall Pride in South Florida.

“Drag has been demonized, censored and used as right-wing hysteria bait,” Press Secretary Brandon Wolf explains. “In response, a community of allies wanted the chance to put on a full face and show their networks and friends that drag is not a crime [and that] it’s not inherently inappropriate. It’s art.”

Nearly 60 people participated in Equality Florida’s event. They were all welcomed by longtime LGBTQ+ ally Sonya Faulhaber, who hosted with the Werk Gallery. The space is St. Petersburg’s contemporary art gallery with an attached boutique and design source and is owned by her brother and brother-in-law.

“St. Pete has a spicy community with big personalities and is brimming with awesome artists,” she says. “If an art form is under attack, I want to represent and push back … Drag is being attacked because it’s seen as a gay art. I believe in gay rights and art with all my being and will help push back in whatever way I can.”

“I loved watching what everyone came up with. It was so cool and creative … the artistry was incredible,” Faulhaber continues. “It’s hard to figure out how to try and make a difference without getting hostile or bogged down, and this was just the most fun.”

Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith also participated. She says that “attacks on drag, like the dehumanization of transgender people, are about enforcing rigid stereotypes and policing how all of us express our identities.

“Drag is not a crime. Drag is art. Drag is protest. Drag is community,” she continues. “Thank you to all who participated in this act of joyful resistance against DeSantis’ agenda of censorship and discrimination. This moment calls for all to be on the frontlines in the fight for freedom.”

Additional “Drag is Not a Crime” photoshoots aren’t currently planned, though interested parties can reach out to Equality Florida should they wish to host one. Wolf says that’s because “try as they might, DeSantis and his right-wing sycophants cannot ban us.

“They cannot ban our joy. Our Pride. Our art. Our families. Our existence,” he continues. “LGBTQ people are a part of the fabric of our communities and this moment calls for our resistance to this war on freedom.”

Florida Out Coast Convention to launch in Tampa Ryan Williams-Jent

TAMPA | The inaugural Florida Out Coast Convention will be held Aug. 1-3 at the Hilton Tampa Downtown, the only conference focusing entirely on the state’s LGBTQ+ tourism industry.

FLOCC is hosted by OutCoast LLC, which supports LGBTQ+-inclusive businesses and more in multiple ways. That includes via the digital LGBTQ+ resource OutCoast.com.

“For the first time, we have a dedicated conference for Florida’s tourism and LGBTQ leaders to unite, evolve and flourish as one community,” OutCoast Publisher Rachel Covello says. “The conference format is designed to provide stakeholders a comfortable space to ‘FLOCC together’ to create, deliver and sustain ideas and solutions to strengthen the Florida tourism industry.”

Registration will take place July 31 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Hilton Downtown Tampa and an Opening Social Reception will follow at Yeoman’s Top Golf Swing Suite from 6-9 p.m. Each of FLOCC’s three days will feature keynote

LGBTQ+ inclusive destination marketing organizations, hotels, businesses, nonprofits and others will attend sessions about navigating LGBTQ+ tourism advisories, inclusive recruiting practices and marketing to LGBTQ+ travelers and much more.

Its first day is scheduled for Aug. 1 from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. The opening session from 9-10:30 a.m. will include a message from Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, who sees Tampa as an ideal location for the conference.

“Florida’s LGBT travel market includes 13 million visitors and over $1 billion in spending in our hotels, restaurants and attractions,” she says. “This sector is an important part of our state’s economy, but also a reflection of the fact that we are home to several diverse, safe and welcoming LGBT-friendly cities that are among the top LGBT travel destinations in the world.”

FLOCC’s second day will follow Aug. 2 from 7 a.m.-6 p.m., highlighting LGBTQ+ market segment leaders from throughout the state. Among the day’s panels

Flamboyance will also be held from 4-6 p.m., an award and cocktail reception recognizing LGBTQ+ tourism and leadership accomplishments throughout Florida. Covello will emcee.

FLOCC will conclude Aug. 3 with activities from 8-11 a.m. Registration is live and includes access to the opening cocktail reception and full convention with meals and more, including entry to Flamboyance. Rates begin at $299 for students, are available to LGBTQ+-owned businesses in Florida for $399 and general admission is $599. Admission to Flamboyance without conference attendance is $150.

“I encourage all LGBTQ+welcoming tourism leaders, hotels and attractions — and those who want to learn how to become more welcoming — to attend,” Covello says. “That way we can all be a part of the solution in creating more inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ travelers.”

FL LAWMAKER ACCUSED OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Fabian Basabe, freshman Florida House of Representatives member and former reality TV show star, has been accused of sexual harassment by two former employees, as reported by the Miami Herald July 6.

The accusations, made by former legislative intern Jacob Cutbirth and former aide Nicolas Frevola, include the assertion that Basabe nonconsensually slapped the aide’s backside while attending an elementary school career day, as well as groping and making unwanted advances on a Florida State University graduate student before eventually hiring Cutbirth as an intern.

Cutbirth claims that he met Basabe and Frevola at a Tallahassee bar in December and was later asked to drive the intoxicated representative back to his hotel. Cutbirth allegedly warded off advances from Basabe throughout the night, including the 45-year-old man’s attempts to grope, touch and kiss the 24-year-old.

Cutbirth was offered an unpaid internship with Basabe a few weeks later, which he accepted, as he said he considered the position an apology.

The alleged advances did not stop once Cutbirth worked for Basabe, however. Cutbirth claims that Basabe often bid the intern to “flirt with him” in the office and even proposed that Cutbirth end his engagement to “explore his sexuality by having sex with men.”

Frevola, another plaintiff in the lawsuit, claims that Basabe slapped the aide in the face at an event in January, then told him to stand in a corner.

House Speaker Paul Renner hired a law firm to investigate this allegation and it found that there was “physical contact” between Basabe and Frevola, but that no witnesses could corroborate the slap, so it was “inconclusive” whether or not it had occurred.

Frevola and Cutbirth also both signed non-disclosure agreements upon working for Basabe, which they believed to be required for their employment.

Basabe has denied any such conduct with Frevola and Cutbirth, calling the accusations “ridiculous” in an interview with CBS News Miami.

LGBTQ+ ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY OPENS IN FL

The Connie House has opened its doors and is accepting applications for the new assisted living facility in Boynton Beach. The facility is gay-owned and gay-operated to make a space for LGBTQ+ elders.

LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST MONTANA’S DRAG READING BAN

A transgender woman, the owners of an independent bookstore and an educator who teaches in costume are among those challenging Montana’s first-in-the-nation law that bans people dressed in drag from reading to children in public schools or libraries. The federal lawsuit filed July 6 in Butte argues the law violates the free speech and equal protection guarantees in the U.S. Constitution. The plaintiffs seek an injunction to temporarily block the law.

NEW JERSEY MAN ADMITS POSTING ONLINE THREATS

Omar Alkattoul, a 19-year-old man from New Jersey, pleaded guilty July 12 to transmitting a threat in interstate and foreign commerce. He faces up to five years in prison when he’s sentenced Nov. 14. Federal prosecutors said Alkattoul admitted posting online that “God cursed the Jewish people and God should burn gay people.” He also told investigators he had researched how to obtain a gun, shooting ranges and mass shootings but in the days before posting his threat was “about ‘50/50’” on whether he would actually carry out an attack. Authorities said Alkattoul did not have the means to carry out any specific attack.

“Our goal is to provide a safe, caring, and fun atmosphere that fosters a family of residents,” Hendricks says.

The facility is named after Connie Kurtz, an LGBTQ+ rights activist who was the first to sue the New York School board for equal benefits along with her partner, Ruth Bergman. The house was named in Connie’s honor after her death.

The facility is a four-bedroom, three-bathroom house capable of housing up to six residents.

Services offered to residents include round-the-clock care and assistance from staff, three daily meals designed by a registered dietician, monthly housekeeping and weekly linen services.

Residents are also offered a wide range of social and leisure activities. The house is located near Compass GLCC, their local LGBT community center in Lake Worth.

The Connie House is Palm Beach County’s first LGBTQ+ assisted living facility.

TRIAL OVER ALABAMA TRANS CARE BAN DELAYED

The trial over an Alabama law prohibiting doctors from providing puberty-blockers and hormones to treat transgender minors has been delayed until 2024.

U.S. District Judge Liles C. Burke last month postponed the trial date from August to April 2, 2024, giving more time for the parties to produce requested records. The Alabama law remains on hold under a temporary injunction

issued last year by Burke. The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has not ruled on Alabama`s request to lift the injunction and let the law go into effect.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed the Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act into law in 2022, making it a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison for doctors to treat transgender people under 19 with puberty blockers or hormones to help affirm their gender identity. Ivey called the treatments “radical” and “unproven.” Families with

GREEK PRIME MINISTER PLANS TO LEGALIZE SAME-SEX MARRIAGE

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis voiced his support July 4 to legalize same-sex marriage during the Balkin country’s new legislative session. Speaking with Bloomberg, Mitsotakis noted that “Same-sex marriage will happen at some point and it’s part of our strategy,” adding that “Greek society is much more ready and mature.” Greece has recognized same-sex civil unions since 2015; this move by Mitsotakis would mean fuller equality for LGBTQ+ Greeks.

RUSSIA’S FIRST TRANS POLITICIAN DROPS HER RUN FOR GOVERNOR

transgender children ranging in age from 12 to 17 were among those that challenged the Alabama law as an unconstitutional violation of equal protection and free speech rights, as well as an intrusion into family medical decisions. The U.S. Department of Justice joined their lawsuit, seeking to overturn the law. At least 20 states have now enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming care for minors. Arkansas was the first, and its ban was the first to be permanently struck down.

Yulia Alyoshina, Russia’s first openly trans politician, has abandoned plans to run in a gubernatorial election, saying that the country’s latest anti-LGBTQ+ bill has eroded the support needed to register her candidacy. Alyoshina had planned to represent the opposition Civil Initiative party at the polls in southern Siberia’s Altai region in September, when it will elect a new governor. Alyoshina says she has been unable to gather the minimum number of signatures — 502 — needed from members of local municipal councils and village heads to take part. Alyoshina wrote in a Telegram post that 19 council members “were unequivocally ready to put their signatures in support of my nomination,” while others initially supported her but later retracted their backing, citing the bill banning gender transitioning currently under consideration in the Duma.

The most telling piece of information, first and foremost, is the idea that I am currently gazing upon not one or two, but four different to-do lists (two of which have “WATERMARK!!!!” written on them — #ShoutOut). One of my favorite pastimes/ neurodivergent tendencies is writing to-do lists, checkboxes and all, and then at the beginning of a new week, I transfer the same “to-dos” to another list. Of course, not before I physically draw a checkmark on the previous week’s list. Don’t get me wrong, fam. That millisecond of orgasmic productivity is unquestionably worth it but that “Big O” ever so quickly becomes the “Big O… SHIT! I HAVE SO MUCH TO DO AND SO LITTLE TIME, BUT WHAT IS TIME, REALLY?!?!?” It should come at no surprise that I have the resting heart rate of an Olympic athlete despite the lack of any physical activity whatsoever (unless anxiety attacks count as physical activity; in that case, I am a triathlete). I digress.

As of this writing, I took both of my cats, Luna and Celine, to the vet at 8 a.m. this morning. You must be wondering: “Why did you schedule to bring two

Now, I do not consider myself an expert in the field of physics and/or statistics; however, I am 98.7% sure that the aforementioned canine fecal distributor (medium-large dog) took its Dumpelstiltskin right in front of their monster of an owner’s car door. And based on my observational research, I am 99.9% sure that the vile subhuman that calls themselves a “fur parent” peeped that mountain of poop, shrugged and went on their merry way.

As I stood there, one foot trapped in a mound of doggy doo-doo, I couldn’t help but laugh. It was just another addition to the long list of absurdities that seemed to follow me wherever I go. Life has a wicked sense of humor and I have come to embrace it, and in this particular case, smell it and dry heave it as well.

Luna and Celine, seemingly unfazed by the whole ordeal, stared back at me with their innocent eyes,

with expletives that include but were not limited to, “Are you fucking serious?! What the fucking fuck, dude?!” Inside the vet’s office, the staff greeted me warmly, seemingly unaware of the unfortunate incident that had occurred just moments prior. As Luna and Celine were ushered into the exam room, I took a moment to reflect on the unpredictable

amusement in it all. Instead of dwelling on the mishaps and misfortunes, I am choosing to embrace them as part of my unique journey. So, dear reader, as I bid you farewell remember that life’s unpredictability can be a source of amusement if we allow ourselves to find the humor in it. Embrace the absurdity, laugh at the challenges and cherish the

transgender members of our community in Central Florida and Tampa Bay, some you know and many you don’t. It is designed to amplify their voices and detail their experiences in life.

This issue, we check in with Miranda Richards, a St. Petersburg-based hairdresser and barber who works at Tyler’z Babershop. The LGBTQ+ staple is a fan favorite in the region because of stylists like her, regularly winning Watermark Awards for Variety and Excellence.

“I love the fact that the hair industry is always changing and evolving,” Richards says of her craft. “I’m also so happy working at an LGBTQ-owned and operated

business where I can always be my authentic self.”

That isn’t always easy to do for people who are LGBTQ+, especially those who are trans. It’s a challenge others may not fully comprehend.

“It can be hard to find work,” Richards explains. “People don’t understand this life and some have an awful point of view. I’ve had job offers revoked once I’ve disclosed that I am trans.”

Thankfully she’s had support for most of her life. It began at home

in her youth, where she never had to come out.

“I never had to tell anyone,” Richards says. “My parents knew who I was before I did and never pressured me to be anyone different.”

It helped shape her into someone who embraces change, evident in her decision to move from the United Kingdom to the United States in the late ‘90s.

Richards initially relocated to Michigan with one of her dearest friends. She’s originally from Daventry — a civil parish in Northamptonshire, England — and later lived in Colorado and New York before settling into Tampa Bay. That’s where she found her community in 2017.

“I love how quick we are to come together to support each other in times of need,” she says. “I’ve participated in many fundraisers and charity events helping people when they’ve been sick or raising funds for organizations like Metro Inclusive Health.”

Locals may also know her as Miranda Marie Sugarbaker for that reason, Richards’ alter ego in drag. She’s been influenced by Bette Midler, Joan Rivers and Adele, on full display in

her comedic and captivating performances at fan favorite venues throughout Tampa Bay.

“My drag is glamorous and it’s a touch old school,” Richards says. “I prefer big hair and glamorous gowns over leotards and pussycat wigs. I’m bold and brash and my comedic skills are outrageous!”

She’s had a lifetime of practice for that.

“I’ve always been a performer, playing dress up and creating characters since I was a child,” Richards notes. “The stage and theatre led me to drag — I never wanted to play the cowboy, I wanted to be the saloon girl! Drag was natural for me. It led me to my community and it led me to be the woman I am today.”

That woman is someone who understands that in every job that must be done — from cutting hair to hosting Drag Bingo to participating in Visibili-T, where she first mused her pronouns were “Cash App and Venmo” — there is an element of fun. She learned it from “Mary Poppins,” her favorite film.

“I even had her tattooed on my arm,” she says of the Disney classic’s titular character, based on the beloved book series of the same

name. “My mantra in life comes from ‘Mary Poppins.’ At one point in the film she says, ‘I never explain anything,’ and I think we all should be that way.”

Thankfully, Richards was ready to explain a few things for Visibili-T. She jokingly says it was because “I was asked and I like attention,” but admits the real reason is “I think it’s important for people of all walks of life to have a voice and be seen.”

If there was one thing Richards would like to see improved in the LGBTQ+ community, it’s reception to that message. She says “you’d be surprised” at how many times her fellow members have misgendered her, something “a better understanding of trans and nonbinary people” would help improve.

“As frivolous as I may seem I’m a genuine soul with a heart of gold just trying to survive in this world,” Richards says, and it’s a happier one because she’s in it.

THE 75TH PRIMETIME EMMY AWARD NOMINATIONS WERE ANNOUNCED JULY 12 AND THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY WAS WELL REPRESENTED. HBO’s hit series “The Last of Us” had a strong showing with 24 total nominations, including one for star Bella Ramsey in Best Actress in a Drama Series and one for Murray Bartlett for Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series. Ramsey’s co-star and LGBTQ+ ally, Pedro Pascal scored a Best Actor in a Drama Series nod. Nick Offerman, who played Bartlett’s lover also scored a nom for Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series. RuPaul continued his Emmy dominance with another nine nominations for “RuPaul’s Drag Race” while Netflix’s “Queer Eye” reboot scored six nominations for its latest season. Queer representation in the Guest Acting categories continued with Nathan Lane and Cherry Jones being nominated for their turns on “Only Murders in the Building” and “Succession,” respectively. In the limited-series categories, Niecy Nash-Betts locked down a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards air live Sept. 18 on FOX.

MULTIPLE GAY COUPLES CALL IT QUITS

THIS HAS NOT BEEN THE SUMMER OF LOVE FOR SEVERAL SAME-SEX MARRIAGES as three high-profile couples have announced they are calling it quits. Billy Porter and husband Adam Smith announced July 6 their divorce after six years of marriage, calling it “an amicable and mutual” decision in a statement. On the same day, it was reported that pop icon Ricky Martin and his husband, Swedish painter Jwan Yosef, were also splitting after six years together. Four days later, on July 10, gay influencers Nicky Champa and Pierre Boo announced on Instagram that they were splitting after one year of marriage but six years together. Boo announced the news with a single sentence, “We broke up.”

‘SEX EDUCATION’ PREPARES FOR FINALE

“SEX EDUCATION,” A BRITISH DRAMEDY SURROUNDING

AWKWARD TEENAGE BOY OTIS with a mother who happens to be a sex therapist, will air its last season this fall. The show featured many LGBTQ+-inclusive voices and storylines, including asexual, pansexual and nonbinary characters, as well as a scene in which a student asks his teacher about gay sex during a sex-ed lesson, pushing him to inform the class about lubricants and safe sex practices for same-sex interactions. Creator Laurie Nunn wrote a letter to fans addressing the show’s ending expressing her gratitude to everyone who made the show possible. “Sex Education’s” final season will premiere Sept. 21 on Netflix.

‘DRAG RACE’ PHILIPPINES TO RELEASE SECOND SEASON

“DRAG RACE” PHILIPPINES WILL SOON PREMIERE SEASON TWO of the international reality competition based on the American “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” in which aspiring drag queens compete in a series of competitions to show off their talent, style and charisma in order to become the next “Drag Race” superstar. Some of the queens competing for a crown (and cash prize) this season include Arizona Brandy, Astrid Mercury, Captivating Katkat and Hana Beshie. The show will also feature returning judges Paolo Ballesteros, Jiggly Caliente and KaladKaren. The show will premiere Aug. 2 on HBOGo in the Philippines and WOW Presents Plus internationally.

WHETHER IT’S A comic book, a fairy tale, a film, television show or video game, most people enjoy some form of pop culture. Sometimes fans showcase that through a T-shirt or bumper sticker, or maybe it’s made clear through their use of social media. Other times they express it through art.

One such avenue is cosplay, a hybrid term for “costume” and “play” believed to originate at the 1984 World Science Fiction Convention in California. Participants known as cosplayers — dedicated fans of any and every skill level — wear costumes that represent some of their favorite characters. It’s a hobby that’s grown into a worldwide phenomenon over the years.

As such, cosplay has long appealed to those who are LGBTQ+ — many of whom have found their community through fandoms,

The performance art can be used as a tool for cosplayers to express their authenticity, individuality and more.

That’s why Watermark spoke to LGBTQ+ cosplayers throughout Central Florida and Tampa Bay, assembling Avengers and visiting galaxies far, far away to showcase their craft. Here they share why they love what they do, captured by creative designer and photographer Dylan Todd.
