who is your
I
Hero?
t’s a question we’ve likely been asked countless times since childhood. Whether a family member, a movie star, a pro athlete or numerous others, a hero was always someone we looked up to. We lived in awe, and perhaps aspired to be just like them. This year as we celebrate the 15th anniversary of Come Out With Pride, we want to recognize a different type of hero: YOU. The everyday hero. The person who helps make a difference in the lives of other LGBTQ+ individuals. We’re not talking about superheroes here — no flying or superhuman strength necessary — but rather the desire to do the right thing. Being an advocate to a coworker who just came out to the office or is starting their transition journey. Donating resources to organizations combating teenage homelessness. Writing your senator to push for equality. Overcoming the stigma by sharing a moment and perhaps a lifetime with someone who is positive and undetectable. For those who may find themselves in hardship and at a roadblock, you
can be a friend and help lift them up. You can be their hero. In 2019 we also recognized June as the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in NYC. To the younger generation who may be reading this, know that there have been countless heroes before you who have helped pave the way to the progress we enjoy today. Other generations will likely know many of them. At this year’s Pride, we honor those individuals, especially those in Orlando, who have fought and worked tirelessly through the years. There is so much work left to do. As you enjoy this year’s parade, festival and week of events, take a moment to contribute and give back. You truly can be a hero.
Yours in Pride,
Jeff Prystajko

Welcome! On behalf of the City of Orlando, it is my pleasure to welcome you to The City Beautiful for Come Out With Pride, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2019. As Mayor of the City of Orlando, I am proud that our city is home of one of the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ communities and I am committed to working with our residents, community partners and businesses to ensure that Orlando remains an inclusive, welcoming city. Those of us who call Orlando home know that this is a city of true compassion, because we experience it every day. Never was that more evident than three years ago following the Pulse tragedy, when we showed the world that our community will always choose love and unity in the face of hate. Although we may face new challenges, our community will never waver in our resolve – we will always stand in solidarity with each other. I am grateful for Come Out With Pride’s organizers and volunteers who annually produce an event that fosters a sense of community while celebrating Orlando’s vibrancy and unity. The event has certainly grown over the last 15 years and I cannot wait to see what the future brings for the festival. I hope you have a wonderful time at the Come Out With Pride festivities! Sincerely,
Buddy Dyer Mayor

Dear Come Out With Pride 2019 Orlando Residents, Visitors and Guests:
I now extend a heartfelt welcome to our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and supportive straight allies and visitors attending our Come Out With Pride 2019 celebration. Come Out With Pride is a premier event that showcases some of the very best of Orlando and our inclusive community. Not only is it a time when the LGBT community can offer highlights of who we are, it is an occasion where we as a family can come together and show our unity and support for one another along with our straight allies. Additionally, it focuses on the financial and cultural contributions the gay community, residents and visitors make to our great city.
I am proud of the fact that Orlando was the very first Central Florida City to offer a Domestic Partner Registry to same-sex couples! Orlando was also the only City in central Florida to have a historic mass same-sex wedding on January 6, 2015 on the front steps of City Hall. We have a thriving economy, an ever growing and changing community, a diverse mix of residents and of course, our wonderful Florida sunshine. I encourage our visitors to see our beautiful downtown. Consider a stroll through the picturesque Thornton Park neighborhood or a visit to the SODO (South Of Downtown Orlando) area or the bohemian Mills50 Art District (home to the LGBT Center & the Zebra Coalition) and enjoy the many shops, boutiques and restaurants that each of these areas have to offer. A “Must See” right in the heart of downtown is Orlando’s crown jewel, the historic and beautiful Lake Eola Park, which is once again the host site for this year’s Come Out With Pride festivities. Just ask any of the thousands of LGBT community members who already make Orlando their home and you’ll quickly find out why our Art, Culture, Sports, Shopping and a host of other qualities make Orlando such a wonderful place to live, work and play. So, once again I say welcome to the city of Orlando to our visitors. I wish everyone the safest and happiest historic Pride celebration and stay as you experience The City Beautiful. And to our residents, we are always grateful for you and wish you a wonderful Pride Celebration this year! Sincerely, Patty Sheehan Orlando City Commissioner, District 4

entral Florida performer Jazell Barbie Royale was crowned Miss International Queen in March of this year. The Miss International Queen Pageant is the largest transgender beauty pageant in the world and has been held in Pattaya City, Thailand since 2004. Royale became the first black trans woman to take the crown as Miss International Queen and the first contestant from the U.S. to win the top prize since Mimi Marks in 2005. It was such an accomplishment that the City of Orlando recognized Royale with a proclamation and ceremony at City Hall declaring April 11, 2019 as “Jazell Barbie Royale Day.”
Royale was joined on the steps of Orlando City Hall with Mayor Buddy Dyer, City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, Parliament House Entertainment Director Darcel Stevens, Orlando Police Captain Jim Young, Bliss CARES Medical Director Dr. Roberto Ortiz and many of Royale’s family, friends, fans and supporters. Royale is known in the Central Florida community as a performer at the Parliament House and an LGBTQ advocate with Bliss CARES, a nonprofit organization in Orlando whose mission is to treat and prevent HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and other STDs in the local area. Royale’s platform in both the pageant and during her reign as Miss International Queen is HIV/AIDS awareness and education around the HIVpreventative drugs PrEP and PEP.

any symbols of love and community came out of the tragedy at Pulse in June 2016, but arguably none have had the same impact and reach as that small rainbow ribbon with the black band across it seen pinned onto hundreds of thousands of people. The birth of that ribbon was started on one of Orlando’s darkest days by Ben Johansen, or as he has come to be known throughout the world — The Ribbon Maker. What is now commonly referred to as The Orlando Ribbon Project was started by Johansen as a way to identify volunteers at The LGBT+ Center in the days after the Pulse tragedy. It has now become a worldwide movement to

honor and remember the 49 lives lost at Pulse. Johansen’s rainbow ribbons have made their way to all 50 states, 65 countries on six different continents and have even been seen pinned to world leaders and celebrities including Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Pete Buttigieg, Jamie Lee Curtis, Nancy Pelosi, Lance Bass, Alice Cooper and more. Nearly one million ribbons have been made since Johansen folded that first one in 2016. The one millionth ribbon will be made by Johansen on stage during the Community Rally at Come Out With Pride’s 2019 Parade and Festival at Lake Eola.

in Memoriam
oel Strack was an LGBTQ leader, activist and pioneer in Central Florida’s fight for equality for more than 30 years. Strack passed away in the early morning hours of July 15 at the age of 59. Few people in Orlando have had the same monumental impact on Central Florida’s LGBTQ community that Strack did. He was instrumental in launching what would become known as Gay Days at the Magic Kingdom, helped create Orlando’s first Pride parade and assisted in founding both the Orlando Gay Chorus and the Gay and Lesbian History Museum. Due to his many years of service to Central Florida’s LGBTQ community, Strack was presented with a city proclamation by Orlando City 30 C o m e O u t W i t h P r i d e 2 0 1 9
Commissioner Patty Sheehan during a celebration of life event attended by more than a hundred people at Leu Gardens back in June. When Strack passed, fellow community leaders and activists took to social media to honor and remember his impact to Orlando, many quoting Strack’s famous catchphrase “Treat yourself right” in their tributes. Strack’s life may have been best summed up in a Facebook post from Strack’s friend and executive director of The LGBT+ Center, George Wallace. “He literally put his whole life into making Orlando better,” Wallace wrote. “Whether you knew him or not, he has impacted your life.” Strack will be represented by his friends and family in the parade.

Global Superstar
International drag queen and singer Pabllo Vittar headlines Come Out With Pride’s new Pride Stage
P
Jeremy Williams
abllo Vittar is the world’s most popular drag queen. The Brazilian entertainer has more than 9 million followers on Instagram, more than 5 million subscribers on YouTube and her videos have been viewed more than a billion times, that is billion with a “B”! That is more exposure than any queen on any season of “Drag Race” and more views, followers and subscribers than even RuPaul.
More so, Vittar has got a powerhouse voice. The singer-songwriter made her first televised appearance on a Brazilian show in 2014 belting out the Whitney Houston classic “I Have Nothing” to thunderous applause, and has since then taken the world by storm releasing her own original music. Vittar has collaborated with some of the music industry’s hottest acts including Charli XCX, Major Lazer, Anitta and Diplo. She also became the first drag queen ever nominated for a Grammy when her song “Sua Cara” was nominated at the 2018 Latin Grammy Awards for Best Urban Fusion/Interpretation. Not only is Vittar a popular singer, songwriter and drag queen, in her home country of Brazil she is also a symbol of living your truth and being your authentic self. While Brazil legalized same-sex marriage in 2013 and had been pushing to be more progressive, last year the country elected far-right, openly-homophobic Jair Bolsonaro to lead the country. This resurgence of anti-LGBTQ bigotry means that Brazil needs role models like Vittar now more than ever. “I think the coolest thing about my career is the messages I get on social media, people saying that they are happier, that my music helped them get through hardships, or I’ve helped them feel good about themselves,” Vittar said last year in an interview with Vogue magazine. “It makes me really happy. This is what makes my job worth it, it’s to change other people’s lives, or else it wouldn’t be worth it. Sure, it is a fun job, but at the end of the day, this is the coolest part.” Vittar is bringing that authenticity and excitement to Come Out With Pride when she takes the Pride Stage at Lake Eola Park on Oct. 12.
