Pride in the

Streets!

W

hat month is it? What day is it? Is Pride almost here? I feel the same as many of you, that the weeks have all blurred together. This year has thrown so much at us that 2020 feels more like a reality show than actual reality. Our LGBTQ+ community has undoubtedly felt the effects. Unemployment has hit Orlando hard, especially in the tourism and service industries. Our bars and clubs, our enclaves of refuge and inclusion, have been largely shuttered. And the effects of COVID-19 have had both direct and indirect consequences on our health as those with pre-existing conditions were at greater risk for the effects of the virus; even getting other critical treatments became difficult, likely incurring longlasting impacts. Equally as noteworthy this year has been the intense spotlight placed on racism and the unfair treatment of persons of color. We may be a diverse community, but the stories being told show we are far from an inclusive one. Pride began as a riot. It raised the issue of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights in people’s consciousness, and

over many decades helped to break down barriers and raise our community’s voices. It showcased a positive and vibrant environment that represented what’s possible if we were not just simply more tolerant but instead truly accepting. Even if we can’t be together at Lake Eola this year, Pride doesn’t just stop — we can still strive to create that more perfect world. On Saturday, October 10 let’s continue to wave our rainbow and progress flags, dance to our anthems, and celebrate together virtually or among our close chosen family. Then in November, let’s make sure to carry that spirit with us to the polls and elect representatives who truly respect LGBTQ+ people and their values. At the moment it maybe feels like we’re stuck in the midst of a nightmare we can’t wake up from. I’m optimistic however that we’ll look back in time and say this wasn’t a breaking point — but instead the catalyst for necessary social change and a brand new era of progress.

Yours in Pride,

Jeff Prystajko

CHARLOTTE DAVIS

C

“Cha Cha”

harlotte “Cha Cha” Davis has been fighting for those in Central Florida’s Black and LGBTQ communities for many years now, but she really stood out as an activist in 2016 by getting into what the late Congressman John Lewis called “good trouble.” Davis was the lead organizer for the “Sit in For the #49” protest in the wake of the 2016 Pulse tragedy. The protest got Davis and nine others arrested for civil disobedience, but it also introduced many in Central Florida to Davis for the first time. “This all started for me around Pulse,” Davis says. “I’m always going to be amplifying the voices of the Black community that were affected at Pulse.” In 2020, Davis has been amplifying her own voice in the community fighting against gun violence, police brutality and advocating for trans women of color. Davis is now the Anti-

Racism Liaison for the One Orlando Alliance and LGBTQ Outreach Coordinator for Let Your Voice Be Heard. With all her work this year, it’s no wonder Davis is one of Pride’s 2020 Grand Marshals. “This is definitely a wonderful surprise,” she says. “I also think it’s a shared experience with myself and everyone in my community.” While this year’s Pride celebration is different than years past, Davis thinks this is a great chance for everyone to come up with creative ways to celebrate and reach out to the community. “I’m planning on holding a couple engaging conversations online with members of the trans community,” she says. “And highlighting those trans individuals whose lives have been taken and have been left out of the narrative. I would love to see those voices lifted and highlighted this year during Pride.” C o m e O u t W i t h P r i d e 2020 17

ROBERT MARTIN

R

“Chantel Reshae”

obert Martin has been Orlando Proud since the early ‘90s, but most know him better as the fabulous drag queen Chantel Reshae. Getting his start as one of the original Footlight Players, Martin has been a Central Florida drag staple for years owning the stages of Parliament House, GayDayS and, most recently, as the Entertainment Show Director at Savoy. “This community has helped me become me,” Martin says. “There’s no mold I had to fit into to be accepted here. This community gave me a voice, Robert didn’t have a voice for years but Chantal had one instantly and that was intoxicating.” Through his drag heroes — Geraldine Jones, Miss P and Carmella Marcella Garcia — Martin was able to create an 18 C o m e O u t W i t h P r i d e 2 02 0

entertainer in Chantel Reshae based on authenticity and talent, which has made him a leader in the community and a no-brainer selection as Grand Marshal. “When I first found out I burst into tears,” Martin says. “I was just overwhelmed.” As everyone tries to figure out how to celebrate Pride in this new normal, Martin says the best example of how he thinks it will turn out can be found in a well known holiday classic. “Sometimes our celebrations turn focus so much on the party and this year I think will be like the end of ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas,’” he says. “We’re having to take away a lot of the official stuff and those Who’s in Whoville got together and celebrated the celebration and not the adornment. I think this year’s Pride is going to be just like that.”

JOHN NEMCHECK

J

“Hoggle”

ohn Nemcheck, known in Disney circles as “Hoggle,” he been a Pride hero in the LGBTQ community for many years, but in 2020 he took the spotlight as a different kind of hero. Nemcheck is an E.R. trauma nurse at Orlando Regional Medical Center. “2020 has been a roller coaster ride, emotionally and physically,” Nemcheck says. “Almost every single day something different was happening or we were changing something.” As a 2020 Grand Marshal, Nemcheck says he is representing all his fellow emergency professionals. “We’re a very close-knit group in the emergency profession,” he says. “Between firefighters, police, nurses, doctors, all of us, and right now we can’t go out, socialize or even hug each other like we normally do. Mentally it’s been taxing on all of us.”

Even with this being a different kind of Pride with no large gatherings, festivals or huge events, Nemcheck says he has never looked forward to a Pride more than this one. “[Being a Grand Marshal] is like the highest honor in this community,” he says. “To represent the members of the LGBTQIA community, I just feel so completely honored.” While the big events won’t be there, Nemcheck says he is excited to know he will be celebrating Pride in the city at the same time as everyone else in the community. “I can’t wait to see small groups of people celebrating throughout the Central Florida area and coming together, possibly online, with everybody else and have a feeling of solidarity that we’re all celebrating the same thing and we’re not going to let any of this year get us down.” C o m e O u t W i t h P r i d e 2020 19
