“W

PRIDE

hat is Pride?” When I first took over as Board President in 2018, I opened this column with those very words. While we each have our own valid feelings and interpretations of what Pride should look like, one truth I’ve come to realize is that Pride endures because it evolves. In our country, and even in Orlando, where we are today is very different from what our community experienced decades ago or even just a few years ago. On October 9, attendees at Lake Eola may notice an event full of change. COVID-19 has been a turbulent roller coaster ride impacting every aspect of our planning, and at times we honestly struggled to move forward. Mask wearing, capacity limits and other protocols will be evident all around — but so will the spirit of togetherness and the power of visibility, illustrating why Pride is such an effective and positive force in society today. Despite the successes, new battles are being fought every day. From health crises and trans rights to workplace and income inequality, our community’s struggles are far from over. Pride is an opportunity for us all to become

educated, take a stand and spring into action. How will Pride grow in the future? I can’t be certain except to say it will no doubt continue to transform and better reflect the diversity of our vast community. The best Pride is one that not only celebrates all of us together (physically or virtually), but more importantly is a celebration of YOU. No person or pandemic can ever take that away.

Yours in Pride,

JEFF PRYSTAJKO

BOARD PRESIDENT

Finally we should all give our new Executive Director, Tatiana Quiroga, as well as our incredible production team volunteers an enormous round of applause for making Come Out With Pride possible in 2021 against almost insurmountable odds. For us, bringing this event to you is a labor of love, and I’m eternally grateful to have had the opportunity to share in it along with the countless individuals over the years who have helped steward Pride in the City Beautiful. #KeepDancingOrlando

WELCOME ALL TO PRIDE

A

s the newly appointed Come Out With Pride Executive Director, I am overjoyed to be celebrating Pride with you this year in person. It is my absolute pleasure to invite each and every one of you in our community to come celebrate with us. Having to accommodate COVID in 2020, the Board of Directors and I recognize the sanctity of our space and how much our community mourned our inability to gather last year. Therefore, we are thrilled to bring Pride back to life in Orlando. We want you to come and enjoy the space created by us and for us. Feel free to be your authentic self and love who you love. We anticipate this year’s celebration to be spectacular. We recognize that during these uncertain times full of questions and controversies, we must remember we are all part of a larger community. In June of 1969, the LGBTQIA+ movement was conceived from the Stonewall riots. This historic revolt was led by brave black and brown trans women, giving birth to Pride and forever impacting all our lives. With the progression of the LGBTQIA+ movement, Pride has evolved. Now,

we rejoice and celebrate our triumphs, remember those we’ve lost and will never forget, and strive to support our most vulnerable and disenfranchised. We know our LGBTQIA+ community is expansive, including various members who live in assorted intersections. Despite the differences in our life’s paths and journeys, we are stronger together versus apart. Orlando, we have spent the last five years not just rebuilding or repairing our community but reimagining ourselves, creating support and opportunities for those experiencing marginalization where there once was nothing. We rose from the ashes bringing awareness, education and change. We are resilient. We are strong. We are Orlando and we will KEEP DANCING! This is your Pride and I look forward to seeing you on Oct.9th!

As Mayor of the City of Orlando, I am proud to welcome you to Come Out With Pride. This is one of my favorite events each year and I am so grateful that it allows our community to unite and celebrate what makes Orlando so special. Even as the pandemic continues to impact us all, I am glad that we are able to safely come together to showcase Orlando’s love, inclusion, vibrancy, and support for our city’s LGBTQ+ community. Come Out With Pride also allows us to reaffirm our community’s dedication to building an Orlando that works for every resident. As we look ahead, our collective commitment to equity, equality, and compassion must be at the forefront of all that we do as a community. That’s just what we did together after the Pulse tragedy, when we united to honor the 49 angels taken, support the survivors, victims’ families, and first responders and show the nation and the world that love is stronger than hate. I believe that we can continue working to build a city where every person feels equally valued, equally protected, and has equitable access to opportunities. Thank you for the role that you play in helping our community achieve this important goal. I hope that you have a wonderful time at this year’s Come Out With Pride festivities. Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer Mayor

TOGETHER AGAIN

A

JEREMY WILLIAMS

fter more than a year in a pandemic that forced Pride to be celebrated socially distanced and virtually in 2020, Come Out With Pride welcomes you back to in-person events in downtown Orlando and at Lake Eola Park. This year’s theme, Unified By Pride, celebrates every member of Orlando’s beautifully diverse LGBTQ community being able to come back together after a hard and trying year. In this guide, we have gathered all the information you need to make sure you don’t miss a single bit of your Pride celebration. In the following pages you’ll find a full list of Pride’s events including the National Trans Visibility March, Zebra Coalition’s annual Drag Race 5K, the return of Watermark’s Movies Out Loud, official after parties and more. You will also find a detailed map of the Pride Festival in Lake Eola Park and the new route for this year’s Most Colorful Parade. We also highlight this year’s parade Grand Marshals, five amazing members of Central Florida’s LGBTQ community who have showcased their talent, passion and authenticity on both a local and national stage. As Equality Florida’s Media Relations Manager, Brandon Wolf is a frequent

presence on MSNBC and CNN advocating for the rights of LGBTQ people across the state. Chelsea Wolfe, a UCF alumna, headed to the Tokyo Olympics this year as a part of Team USA’s BMX Freestyle team and became the first openly trans person to do so. Se7en Bites’ Trina Gregory-Propst took her culinary skills to The Food Network and became the winner of Guy Fieri’s Grocery Games. One Orlando Alliance Board Chair, Felipe Sousa-Lazaballet represented The City Beautiful at this year’s WorldPride in Copenhagen. Entertainer and entrepreneur Blue Star opened downtown Orlando’s hottest new venue, HÄOS on Church, which made headlines as one of the LGBTQ businesses in Orlando worth planning a trip around. All five of these Central Floridians not only showed the world their amazing talent but also represented the LGBTQ community honestly and authentically, never hiding who they are and stood tall unified in their pride for their city and community. We wish you all a happy Pride! Now go out and celebrate who you are honestly, safely and proudly. C O M E O U T W I T H P R I D E 2021 21

BRANDON WOLF

B

MEDIA RELATIONS MANAGER, EQUALITY FLORIDA

randon Wolf was put into the national spotlight five years ago because of tragedy. He was one of the survivors and lost his best friend in the 2016 Pulse shooting. In that pain and loss, Wolf decided that he would advocate for the causes his best friend, Drew Leinonen, was so passionate about. That’s when he helped to launch The Dru Project, a nonprofit group helping to bring resources and funding to local Gay-Straight Alliance clubs in schools. “Safe spaces are critically necessary for LGBT young people and for many that is the GSA at school,” Wolf says. “For a lot of kids church is not safe, home is not safe, the locker room is not safe at school, but a GSA provides them a space where they can be authentically themselves and not have to fear discrimination or violence, where they can explore what it means to be them.” In 2019, civil rights group Equality Florida recognized Wolf’s dedication and passion, bringing him on as its new

media relations manager. Even as the world has struggled with a pandemic, Wolf and Equality Florida have not slowed down fighting for the LGBTQ community. “I’m really proud of the advocates in our community,” Wolf says. “It was incredibly challenging to do the work during these trying times but it is important work. It’s the work of life and death truly for many in our community so we don’t have the option to rest or to stop moving forward.” The pandemic certainly hasn’t slowed Wolf down who, along with his work with Equality Florida and The Dru Project, was recently accepted to the United States Commission on Civil Rights’ Florida Advisory Committee for the next four years and he is also writing a book. “I love this community, I love Orlando and it warms my heart to be able to celebrate with everyone October 9,” he says. CHELSEA WOLFE

C

UCF ALUMNA, THE FIRST TRANSGENDER OLYMPIAN

helsea Wolfe made history this year when she was selected as a reserve rider for Team USA’s BMX Freestyle team at the 2020 Tokyo Games becoming the first out transgender athlete to go to the Olympics. Wolfe — who is from Lake Park, Florida and went to college at the University of Central Florida, graduating in 2016 with a degree in political science — began racing BMX bikes at the age of six and would travel the state with her family in an RV competing. By the time she was 15, her interests shifted into BMX freestyle. Eventually, after multiple successes on the national and international level, Wolfe landed her spot on Team USA. “It’s taking a bit to fully register that after so many years of work we finally have the Team USA BMX freestyle squad for the Olympics, and that after so much work and overcoming so many obstacles that I’ve qualified to represent the United

States as the alternate rider,” Wolfe wrote on her Instagram June 12. “I am positively a different person than when I set off on this journey, I’m so grateful for every experience along the way and I’m so excited and honored to keep working so I’m ready to shred in Tokyo in case I’m needed.” Wolfe took to Instagram again before leaving Tokyo in August. “There’s so much to say that I don’t even know where to start and I doubt I could fit it all into an Instagram post. But just, wow,” she wrote. “I’m so proud of myself and everyone who dedicates themselves to pushing humanity forward, and so grateful for every bit of support along the way ... Thank you again to everyone who has helped me get here and congratulations to everyone on your hard work to show the world what riding a tiny bike is all about.”

BLUE STAR

B

OWNER, HÄOS ON CHURCH

eing named a 2021 Come Out With Pride Grand Marshal caught local entertainer, activist and HÄOS on Church owner off guard at first. As a former board member for COWP, Star was used to giving the honor, not receiving it. My first thought was ‘Wait, I’m supposed to be delivering this information to somebody else, right?’” Anyone who takes a look in downtown Orlando can see just why Pride selected Star this year. After closing her beloved Venue in Ivanhoe Village in 2019, Star started a journey to find what was next for her and the BlueLaLa family. What she found was a brand new HÄOS on historic Church Street. HÄOS was a different kind of venue Star was embarking on. It would still offer the type of entertainment Star was famous for bringing to Orlando but it was also a restaurant, bar and downtown hot 34 C O M E O U T W I T H P R I D E 2 02 1

spot. “The goal was to give hope to the community, first and foremost,” she says. “To give people a place to work, to give people opportunity and to grow and evolve with these ever changing times which are extremely difficult.” The difficulties of opening a new business were dialed up thanks to the ongoing pandemic that left many out of work and worried about venturing out into the public. “Trying to navigate through that has been very challenging but at the end of the day, even through all of the hardships, we know that this is something that we hope will be a beacon of life for a community, and not just the LGBTQ community but the community as a whole,” she says. “It’s for everybody.”

GREGORY-PROPST

T

CHEF AND CO-OWNER, SE7EN BITES

rina Gregory-Propst drew national attention this year when she was named champion of Flavortown in celebrity chef Guy Fieri’s Food Network realty competition series “Guy’s Grocery Games.” This season pitted chefs from Fieri’s other show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” — which Gregory-Propst has appeared on twice. Fieri, the judges and fans of both shows — referred to as Triple D and Triple G — saw in Gregory-Propst something that Orlando has known for years, That girl can cook! Gregory-Propst has owned and operated local eatery Se7en Bites with her wife Va Propst for almost eight years now, but owning a restaurant was not originally in Gregory-Propst’s plans. “When I went for my culinary, pastry and hospitality degree my original goal was to be a private chef,” she says. “I didn’t want to open a restaurant at the time, that was my girlfriend at the time, now wife’s idea.” 38 C O M E O U T W I T H P R I D E 2 02 1

Gregory-Propst, who was doing a lot of wholesale desserts for other restaurants, was cooking out of commercial kitchens and Propst encouraged Gregory-Propst to rent her own kitchen space to save money. “So as she is building everything and I’m painting everything, she says I could build you a counter and you could make a few extra things to sell,” Gregory-Propst recalls. “What harm could it be to open a front door and sell a few extra cookies.” Now Se7en Bites is one of the hottest eateries in town and has landed GregoryPropst on TV where her talents have earned her fans from all over. “I love them,” she says. “They love that show, they love everyone on that show, they do a lot of research and know everything about the show so it is crazy in such a good way to have this kind of bond with people that you’ve never met.”

BOARD CHAIR, ONE ORLANDO ALLIANCE

elipe Sousa-Lazaballet was born in Brazil and came to the U.S. when he was 14 years old. Six months after his arrival, he lost his immigration status. For Sousa-Lazaballet, that’s when life in activism began. “I began my journey as an activist, a person fighting for justice as someone who was impacted by a broken immigration system, and also by homophobia at the same time,” he says I’ve always lived in the intersection of many issues and understood very personally the pain of people of color in the United States.” In 2010, Sousa-Lazaballet was one of four students who walked 1,500 miles from Miami to D.C. to share the stories of immigrant youth. Being an advocate in the undocuqueer movement took him across the country, but the tragedy at Pulse in 2016 brought him to Orlando where he immediately started working. He, along with friends who also had ties to Florida, began raising funds to help launch Contigo Fund. Shortly after that he became the Inclusion, Diversity & Equity Sr. Specialist for the Office of Multicultural Affairs in the City of Orlando. At the start of 2021, Sousa-Lazaballet 42 C O M E O U T W I T H P R I D E 2 02 1

became the board chair for the One Orlando Alliance, a nonprofit coalition of more than 40 LGBTQ organizations unified to transform Central Florida into a more inclusive and safe community for LGBTQ people. “I see the Alliance as a place where we can have the needed conversations that address the issues related to race that have been unaddressed for too many years,” he says. “They are difficult conversations to be had but they are so necessary, more now than ever. And that’s how I see my role, as someone who knows these issues, not only from a place of understanding them but they are a part of my life.” This year also marked another milestone for Sousa-Lazaballet. “This year was when I became a U.S. citizen,” he says. “I have been wanting and dreaming about this moment, and to be recognized by my community as a grand marshal gives me not only hope but makes me feel like other Felipes out there may feel inspired.”
