HELLO PRIDE FAMILY

As we turn the calendar to October, I am thrilled to extend an invitation to each and every one of you to join us at Lake Eola Park on October 19th for the highly anticipated Come Out With Pride Festival and Parade. This celebration is more than just an event; it’s a vibrant testament to our shared values of acceptance, affirmation, and empowerment.

We take immense pride in being the largest singleday event in Orlando, a title we carry with honor and responsibility. Our festival and parade are not merely about dazzling floats, energetic performances, or colorful costumes — though all of these are spectacular

elements. They are about celebrating our collective identity, our diverse experiences and the powerful message that Pride belongs to everyone.

At Come Out With Pride, we see ourselves as the keepers of the flame.

We didn’t light the fire of the Pride movement, but we certainly uphold its brilliance with unwavering commitment. Our mission is to create an environment where every individual feels valued and celebrated. We curate experiences that amplify voices, advocate for the queer community, and foster an atmosphere where positivity reigns supreme.

It is through this dedication that we help individuals — perhaps some of you in the audience — look in the mirror and say with conviction, “I love who I am, I’m proud of who I am, and I know that I am valued and I belong.” This affirmation is at the heart of what we do. Our festival is a platform for everyone to express themselves freely and confidently, to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with

remember that we are a part of a much larger, loving family. We will not let harmful politics define or erase us. As we reflect on the history of our movement, especially the bravery of the Black and Brown trans women at the forefront of the Stonewall riots, we have a poignant reminder of how far we’ve come and how vital it is to keep moving forward.

Our Pride is about celebrating who we are, paying tribute to our

allies, and to embrace the strength found in our unity.

Whether you are a longtime supporter or new to our community, your presence at this year’s Come Out With Pride Festival and Parade will be a cherished part of our celebration. Expect a day filled with vibrant music, incredible performances, and an array of activities designed to engage and inspire. More importantly, expect to be surrounded by a community that stands together in joy and solidarity.

JULEIGH MAYFIELD

Juleigh Mayfield is an intersex woman and one of the biggest intersex advocates in Florida. Over the last 10 years, she has worked to educate people on what it means to be intersex and has fought for intersex rights and equal treatment, both socially and legally.

Mayfield made headlines in January 2020 when she asked a Florida judge for a gender marker change on her birth certificate after her birth state of Alabama refused to do so. After months of fighting, and changing her case from Central Florida to South Florida, Mayfield was successful in getting her birth certificate changed, making it the first ruling in Florida to cover intersex individuals.

In an interview with Watermark at the time, Mayfield said that she feels the reason the decision went in her favor was because her attorney

did “her due diligence in educating the judge about intersex people,” and that has been Mayfield’s driving force in her activism.

Education is the easiest way for people to help the intersex community fight discrimination and mistreatment. The more people understand something, the less they are afraid of it. That’s why Mayfield feels her job as an advocate for the intersex community can never be done, regardless of how small or large the impact is, it must continue one small change at a time.

Mayfield continued the fight

Contigo Fund, Bliss Cares and the National Network Latin Plus to name a few.

In 2019, Figueroa was appointed by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to serve as part of the City of Orlando’s Census Complete Count Committee.

In recognition of her commitment to service to the community, Figueroa was named the recipient of the 2019 Voice of Equality honor by Equality Florida and was named among Watermark’s Most Remarkable People of 2019 for her continued advocacy and leadership within the transgender community of Orlando.

"If you know Ashley, you know that anything she does, she does is with class, style and passion. It is obvious that her desire to help the community is extremely important to her," wrote Maggie L. King, Bliss CARES' Director of Development and Community Relations in 2019,

about Figueroa being named one of Watermark's Most Remarkable People of the Year. "Ashley loves her Central Florida community and is always out and about making a positive impact in the community."

In 2020, she was recognized by Honor 41 as part of their list of 41 national leaders to follow in our movement for LGBTQ+ Latinx equality.

Today, Figueroa is also proud to be working as president and managing director with Figueroa & Partners.

for intersex visibility in the LGBTQ+ community earlier this year when she advocated for the inclusion of the intersex flag in the Pride flags that were flown in downtown Orlando during LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

“Inclusion of the intersex flag into the Pride flag also serves as a powerful part in helping to educate people on what intersex is,” Mayfield said earlier this year. “More visibility on the flag can lead to people taking an interest in learning what that part of the flag represents.”

Mayfield launched her first nonprofit organization, Interclusions, this year to increase her range and create a safe place with resources for intersex individuals. Mayfield also hopes that Interclusions will help to bridge the gap between the intersex community and the rest of the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as non-intersex and cisgender people. She says that doing so can significantly help the

intersex community since most people have no idea what intersex really means.

“I know I’m creating ripples that long term might make a difference. That’s important to me,” Mayfield said. “Nobody said advocacy was easy … but once it finds you, you feel like you need to keep doing it for the people behind you.”

DR. GEORGE WALLACE

DEBBIE SIMMONS AWARD RECIPIENT

Dr. George Wallace has been a visible leader in Central Florida's LGBTQ+ community for years, first with the Orlando Fringe Theatre Festival then with the LGBT+ Center Orlando.

2004, he began volunteering at Orlando Fringe. That year he was given the volunteer of the year award and in 2005 began working with the beloved arts organization, where he spent 12 years in various roles, eventually becoming the executive director. Wanting to give back to the LGBTQ+ community, Wallace joined the board of directors of both Orlando Gay Chorus and the LGBT+ Center Orlando. In 2017, he was hired as The Center’s executive director, and became the organization's first chief executive officer in 2022.

Wallace has received many accolades for his advocacy over the years, including being named one of Orlando’s “Most Remarkable People” by Watermark in both 2015 and 2018. Wallace has also won multiple WAVE Awards as Orlando’s favorite LGBTQ+ advocate. For his tireless efforts, Congressman Darren Soto honored him with a Congressional Honor Award in 2019 and Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer appointed him to the city’s very first Multicultural Affairs board of directors. They have released three studio albums, a stand-up special and their first book, a memoir/cookbook called “Southern Fried Sass: A Queen’s Guide to Cooking, Decorating, and Living Just a Little Extra,” was a huge hit.

Eads started their journey in Leesburg, Florida, and as Ginger Minj states “it’s 45 minutes from Orlando and 45 years behind it, culturally.” Eads’ first time in drag was with “BOYS BOYS BOYS” at the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival in 2005 and then continued doing it at Sleuth’s Mystery Dinner Show. They then were taken under the wing by Rusty Faucet, an Orlando legend, and drag royalty Carmella Marcella Garcia. Ginger Minj was among the queens selected for “RuPaul’s Drag

Race” season seven, and has appeared on the spin-off series “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” in both seasons two and six.

Eads was named one of Watermark’s Most Remarkable People of 2021. At the time, Eads’ husband, Ceejay Russell wrote, “Very few know the person behind the makeup and wigs. Joshua is one of the most selfless people I have ever known. They would give you the shirt off their back but then read you to filth for not having your own. Joshua is a driving force behind uplifting and supporting local talent, not just in Orlando but all over the world. Ginger has been a focal point in the Orlando drag scene now for well over a decade, performing at Pulse to Parliament House. The energy that Ginger brings to any stage they are on is one of a kind.”

Achievement Award from Orlando Fringe and was named Orlando Gay Chorus’ Luminary Award recipient in 2021. In 2022, Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings named him as Orange County’s Distinguished Citizen of the Year.

A lifelong learner, Wallace received his undergraduate degree in Behavioral Science from Granite State College, a Master of Public Administration from Troy University and a Doctor of Business Administration from Apollos University. He can be found hosting trivia at SAVOY Orlando every Tuesday. When not working, Wallace can be found rooting for his favorite teams -- Boston Red Sox and Orlando City. An avid traveler Wallace only has three states left to visit before seeing all 50.

in central Florida, Wallace is most proud of the resiliency of the local queer community. “No matter what politicians try to silence us, or individuals and groups try to break us, we prevail," he says. MEET IN THE MIDDLE FOR HOPE

Kit Land Nelson Park, located at 10 N. Forest Ave., Apopka

10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Florida faces a critical moment as marginalized communities, including immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, women and people of color see their rights eroded. In November 2008, LGBTQ+ Californians faced a similar challenge when Proposition 8 banned same-sex marriage. Instead of giving up, thousands gathered in the middle of their state to support each other, build community and fight back. Within a few years, they regained the right to marry. Now it’s time for Floridians who value equality to “Meet in the Middle” and rally for a Florida everyone can call home. An emerging coalition of local, state and national organizations, led by Hope CommUnity Center, is hosting Meet in the Middle. A rally for HOPE, to bring together various movements for change. This event will offer a space for reflection, celebration and a renewed commitment to each other.

Journalism matters. Journalism provides information. Information isknowledge and knowledge is power.

Watermark matters. Our mission is to advance LGBTQ+ interests. We do that by connecting community, informing you of what is happening around you that might not be on your radar. We celebrate our triumphs and, at times, we question our missteps. We uplift those fighting the good fight and hold those accountable who seek to silence you.

We need your help to continue our mission. In honor of our 30-year anniversary, Watermark is asking 1,000 of our readers to support local queer journalism by gifting $30

Visit WatermarkOnline.com/30th or scan the QR code to show your support.

Unlike other news outlets, Watermark covers the LGBTQ+ community from a local perspective, year-round, providing depth and context for our readers they can’t get elsewhere else.

Your gift will help go towards investigative journalism, expanding our freelance team and creating opportunities for more LGBTQ+ journalists, hopefully providing us with the resources to hire more staff to provide a better experience for you, our readers.

Did you know that Florida ranks 4th in the U.S. for most new HIV cases? A major contributing factor to these statistics is the availability and access to quality, culturally competent, affordable healthcare. Hope & Help addresses these factors by providing access to HIV/STD education, preventative resources, testing, treatment, and other forms of support. Our 16 Patient Assistance Programs include transportation, housing assistance, mental health, PrEP/PEP, and other client/patient focused services. Hope & Help is the warm hug of healthcare. WE APPRECIATE SUPPORT

Come Out With Pride Orlando truly values the support of businesses and organizations. Without great partners helping drive awareness, our mission would not be possible. We offer a variety of promotional assets in our partnership levels. There is truly a partnership level for everyone.
