ome Out With Pride is one of the largest Pride events in florida, welcoming an incredible 150,000 participants to Lake Eola last year. Our theme this year, #KeepDancingOrlando, is a powerful message for our community and the world. We were very excited to be able to partner with the creators of this movement to continue to show the pride, love and support that we have here in Orlando. I encourage you throughout our Pride Week to dance and continue to show our diversity and the love our community has for one another through participating in the many activities and events that we have put together. I would like to thank our allvolunteer Board of Directors and Production Team, without whom this celebration would not be possible. These individuals take pride in all their

hard work and countless hours to ensure we deliver a high-quality and memorable event year after year. I would also like to extend a gracious thank you to our many sponsors; without your commitment and generosity we would not be able to achieve our goals. To the vendors, supporting businesses, volunteer ambassadors, entertainers and local government agencies—thank you for your support. Last but surely not least, thanks to all of YOU for celebrating with us. On behalf of the Come Out With Pride leadership team, we welcome you to Come Out With Pride 2017—#KeepDancingOrlando!

How a viral video became a community movement

A

JEREMY WILLIAMS

fter the Pulse attack on June 12, 2016, many people in the community wanted to help however they could. Thousands came out to donate time, money and blood as Orlando showed that we could be hurt, but we would not be broken. The day after the attack, The Tonight Show host Jimmy fallon spoke to his audience and all those listening around the country. “Keep loving each other, keep respecting each other and keep on dancing,” fallon said. That final line became a rally cry for a small group of creatives in town, and less than two weeks after fallon uttered that phrase, a video found its way online. The two-minute video shows people around Orlando dancing to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Sombody.” The video was a viral sensation reaching nearly two million views on 20 C o m e o u t W i t h P r i d e 2 0 1 7

facebook and a hashtag was born, #KeepDancingOrlando. “#KeepDancingOrlando was one of many, many things that businesses around the community did last year to help,” says Jeff Prystajko, Come Out With Pride’s director of marketing and communications. “And this was something that had a great, positive message and we wanted to keep it going this year.” Make sure you have your dancing shoes on Orlando because there will be dancing everywhere this year. “There will be dancing throughout the parade and in the #KeepDancingOrlando Zone all day long,” Prystajko says. “Bring some music, come up with a dance move. We want to get the crowd excited and pumped. “This isn’t just a hashtag we are putting out there. It’s a movement and it is going to permeate everything.”

Community Grand Marshal

reBeCCA StoroZuK Orange County’s first transgender deputy comes off the sidelines and into her first parade

i

JEREMY WILLIAMS

t has been quite a year for Orange County sheriff’s deputy Rebecca Storozuk. Storozuk publicly came out earlier this year as Orange County’s first transgender deputy. Storozuk joined the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in 2012 after serving in the United States Army. While Storozuk has watched many Pride parades on the sidelines, this will be her first time marching in one. Storozuk took a few moments to talk with us about her big day in the sun, what 22 C o m e o u t W i t h P r i d e 2 0 1 7

life has been like since coming out and how it felt to be named Come Out With Pride’s Community Grand Marshal. What does it mean to you to be named a come out With pride grand marshal?

In a community like Orlando, which is my home, a city that I love and never want to leave, it is a tremendous honor. I can’t think of anything that tops it at this point. I don’t know how to describe it. I’m at a loss for words. CoNtiNued oN PG. 26 | uu |

| uu | Rebecca Storozuck from pg.22 What’s been the most challenging part of being the first transgender sheriff in Orange County?

Controlling myself and controlling my anxiety, just being allowed to be open and be me finally. I mean I had some issues with people who don’t understand or some people who just didn’t agree with it, but the Sheriff’s Office, from HR to the agency head, really stepped up. Despite their own issues with it personally, if they had any, they took care of me. You are an Army Veteran. When you see what is currently going on with the Trump administration and his call to ban trans service members, as someone who was there before, what advice would you give them as they are trying to stay focused on their mission?

Take it one day at a time and find your allies. That’s the only advice I have. It is so terrible that they were told they could come out and they could live their truth and be who they are, and not have to face repercussions. Now, with a few tweets, they have to live in constant fear of losing their job. That is absolutely egregious and I don’t understand how with so many people up in arms about this that it is still going on. Who are your community role models?

Every trans person I interact with in public. The fact that they are able to be out and be who they are is amazing. Every one of them is a role model to me. What does the word Pride mean to you when you hear it?

It’s not really a word I can describe; it’s more of a feeling. It’s just a feeling that 26 C o m e O u t W i t h P r i d e 2 0 1 7

I’m ok. After years of this internal struggle and battling with myself, and having selfhatred and being so close to suicide, pride to me means it’s ok. We’re good now. You don’t have to be afraid, you can be you. What are you most looking forward to at Come Out With Pride?

Being in the parade as the Grand Marshal. I have never been in the parade before. Every single year, I stand at the corner where that Publix is downtown with the same group of friends, drinking some beers, and we have the same routine every year. After the parade we come back to my apartment and I cook for everyone. Now I get to actually be in the parade, I get to be on the other side. Not just in the parade, you are a main focus of the parade.

Right, it’s crazy. This has all been so crazy, being out and having people come up to me and say they are happy to meet me. I can’t wait. I am going to be screaming and yelling the entire time. What’s the most inspiring thing you have noticed about Orlando’s LGBT community?

When we look across the country, there are so many places that law enforcement is viewed as a problem. We see these different LGBT organizations out there and everyone is getting grouped into these categories. When I see our LGBT community as a whole, whether you are a gay Republican or LGBT law enforcement or no matter how you or anyone else categorizes you, everyone has given me a chance. Everyone I have met has gotten to know me. Everyone I have interacted with has been so open and so accepting, inviting and warm. Orlando’s LGBT community is family.

Honorary Grand Marshal

BiLLY mANeS Billy Manes was a voice for the community when they needed it the most

B

TONY MAUSS

illy Manes was a singularity. Singularity has many definitions, and Billy Manes encapsulates all of them. He believed in you – in your ability to lead with love, to embrace compassion, to challenge yourself and others daily. He believed in the power of community. He knew one must be an active part of a community that promotes openness, fairness and access. We have lost a great leader in our community. There’s an emptiness that his presence, his voice, his love has left, but he showed us how. He gave us the tools to fill that emptiness, and we must raise our voices for equality, for justice, for love. Lift your chin, fill that emptiness with love; lift your voices and SING. His work is our work now. Viva Billy Manes. Viva Orlando. Viva Pride!

Talent Grand Marshal

orLANdo GAY ChoruS OGC shows their true colors as a Central Florida institution

W

JEREMY WILLIAMS

hen your theme is about dancing, singing and having a good time, there is no more obvious choice for the Talent Grand Marshal than the amazingly talented Orlando Gay Chorus. OGC is one of the largest mixed LGBTQ choirs in the United States; made up of all ages, races, genders and orientations. They have been entertaining Central florida in the face of adversity for more than 25 years. OGC was never challenged more than on June 12, 2016 after the horrific events at Pulse. The LGBTQ community turned to certain Central florida institutions in those darkest of days. When vigils or memorials were being planned, OGC was asked to appear and lift the community in song. Their rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors” became synonymous with healing and love in Orlando in the months that followed. Now, as the 2017 Talent Grand Marshal, OGC is ready to bring music, dance and love to the Come Out With Pride parade.

because I think I’m millennial clever [laughs]. I am also working on a song called “Party Monster,” which I am planning to debut live at Orlando Pride when I am there. I love performing at Pride celebrations and I have decided that each Pride event I perform at I am going to debut a new song so each performance has a special significance to me. Since Orlando’s Pride is in October, I thought this is the perfect song to debut because it’s about being fun and crazy during Halloween. It is so much fun, I’m obsessed with it. Halloween is my favorite holiday so I am super excited. you’re coming to orlando to perform for come out With pride, Which is celebrated in october for national coming out day. What Was your oWn coming out like?

Coming out for me wasn’t easy because I was raised Mormon. I came out very young, when I was 14. I went through years of correctional therapy, visiting counselors and fighting my mom and dad every inch of the way to live who I was. We are now at a point where my parents accept me. for me, when I came out initially at 14, I don’t see that as my coming out. It was when my parents took me out to dinner after accepting me and thanked me for coming out because they said I taught them how to be accepting of people, how to be accepting of gay people. In fact, I have an older brother who came out shortly after I did and they thanked me for helping them to accept him too. Coming out is so important, not just for the person but 38 C o m e o u t W i t h P r i d e 2 0 1 7

for those around them, and those in your life who reject you because they probably need you more than anyone. as a gay man Who has young lgbtQ people folloWing you on social media and listening to your music, What is the most important thing you keep in mind When liVing in front of them?

Being honest with who I am. It’s an easy answer but a complicated way to be. Also, know the community you represent. Know who’s following you and understand that level of influence. Me personally, yes I have young LGBT people who are watching me, but I also have 11 nieces and nephews who are old enough to have an Instagram and they’re the main ones that I’m influencing. since the first pride celebration nearly 40 years ago, the Word pride has taken on this multi-leVel definition and means many things to many people. What does pride specifically mean to you?

When I was growing up Mormon I always heard the word Pride associated with the “Devil” and “Hell.” It became something completely different when I came out and experienced my first Pride. I moved to New York City after leaving Texas. The week I got there it was Pride and every street light, every pole and sign is just gay. Everything is covered in rainbows and glitter, and there are flags everywhere, and I was just like holy shit. I had never had an experience like that before and I loved it. So Pride became this time of celebration for me with more gay people than I thought even existed. Then I was offered the opportunity to perform at Pride and I couldn’t believe it. I pretty much credit Pride with the reason I have a career. It just means so much to me now.
