What is

Pride?

Is it a parade? Is it a party? Is it fun outfits and rainbow flags?

o

ur community is diverse. LGBTQ+ individuals and allies represent a wide spectrum of ethnicities, sexual and gender identities, ages, backgrounds, political affiliations and ways of thinking. Ask any of our 160,000+ attendees “what is pride” and you’ll get 160,000+ answers. As we embark on the 14th anniversary of Come out With Pride here in orlando, let’s remember that we only truly become a unified community when we embrace everyone’s differences. Pride is about being true and authentic to yourself and accepting others for who they are. Pride is the ongoing fight for freedom and happiness for all of us. “But wait, I just came to hang out with my friends and celebrate!” nothing wrong with that—we have so much to celebrate here in Central Florida. Let’s laugh, hold hands and #keepDancingorlando. But I challenge you to do more. Pride exists because passionate activists over past generations sacrificed time, money, families, careers and in some cases their lives so that we can enjoy the privileges and freedoms many often take

for granted today. Yet so many are still targets. So many live in fear, afraid to come out or are enduring unnecessary pain for doing so. Parents are throwing their kids out on the street. HIV is still a massive epidemic in Florida. our trans brothers and sisters are being murdered. There is So much work to be done. our amazing pride team has worked tirelessly to bring you an amazing week of events this year, and we want you to leave with a huge smile on your face feeling that this was the best Pride ever. But we also ask that you take a minute to ask while you’re here, “what can I do to help?” Take action! Donate. Volunteer. VoTE! Every bit counts. Somewhere amidst the colorful floats and the plethora of vendors at Lake Eola we know you’ll find your own answers. So what is pride? Let’s all find out together.

Yours in Pride,

JEFF PrYSTAJko

Board President

Giving Pride

COWP shows it’s more than just a party with Pride Gives Back

e

JErEMY WILLIAMS

very year in october—around national Coming out Day— Central Florida celebrates LGBTQ+ Pride with a parade, festival and some of the most spectacular parties around Lake Eola and throughout the City Beautiful. But it isn’t only about the celebration for Come out With Pride. It’s also about giving back to those who give year-round to the LGBTQ+ community. “[Pride Gives Back] is a way for us to give money we raised during the actual Pride fesitval back to those who need it,” says CoWP Pride Gives Back spokesperson Ashley Figueroa. “We have a lot of people in Central Florida who are committed to giving back to the community every year, improving and working with the LGBTQ+ community, so we want to reward and empower these groups and individuals so they are able to continue to do that work.” 22 C o m e o u t W i t h P r i d e 2 0 1 8

CoWP serves as a fundraising event to benefit the LGBTQ+ community in three different categories: LGBTQ+ health and wellness, economic development and education. “Last year, the event raised $30,000,” Figueroa says. “That money went back into the orlando LGBTQ+ community in the form of community grants and scholarships.” In 2017, CoWP awarded five scholarships of $2,000 each. They also paid out grants to seven local LGBTQ+ nonprofit organizations: onePuLSE Foundation, Equality Florida, Libby’s Legacy, The one orlando Alliance, Central Florida Sounds of Freedom Band and Color Guard, orlando united Counseling and Strengthen orlando (orlando Youth Empowerment Summit). To learn more about Pride Gives Back, apply for a scholarship/grant or to read up on the scholarship/grant requirements, visit ComeoutWithPride.com/pride-gives-back.

| uu | Frenchie Davis from pg.34 Who are your musical influences?

Ella [Fitzgerald]. Aretha [Franklin]. Whitney [Houston]. In my opinion, they are the Holy Triumvirate of vocal performance. Honorable mention to Leontyne Price and Dinah Washington, as well. You starred in the Off-Broadway production of “The View Upstairs.” As a member of this community, what were you feeling while you brought their stories to life?

It was so humbling and such a great honor to bring to life those stories, particularly because so many of the characters and their stories represented LGBTQIA people of color. Those first days of rehearsal were really powerful because, as a cast and entire production team, we sat and talked about so much of the historical context of the piece and what it meant to be gay in the Deep South and also a person of color. I love how my character—this tough but soft butch black woman matriarch/ patriarch—managed to create this magical safe space for so many people in the community. You’ve said on multiple occasions that you’ve faced homophobia, biphobia and racism. How has that shaped you as a person and to what degree do those past experiences influence your activism now?

I’ve experienced homophobia, biphobia, fatphobia and racism. I think it has been most hurtful when it comes from other oppressed groups of people. It is particularly hurtful because I consider myself a part of all of these communities and I stand at 38 C o m e O u t W i t h P r i d e 2 0 1 8

an intersection that inspires the kind of dialogue that makes people feel uncomfortable. Here’s the amazing thing though, my experience of -isms and phobias at that intersection have liberated me in a number of ways because experiencing public humiliation and shame will do one of two things: it will destroy you or it will push you to really do the work of loving and accepting yourself, and for me it’s done the latter. The more I’ve learned to accept myself, the more unapologetic I feel about who and what I am. And the more unapologetic I feel about who and what I am, the more clearly I can see that the way other people process that isn’t my problem. What advice would you give LGBTQ youth and POC facing those same struggles?

My advice is this: When writing the story of your life, don’t let anybody else hold the pen. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what anybody thinks about you. It is your life and you are responsible for making it beautiful! You are enough. You are not a mistake. Self-doubts are normal, insecurities are normal. If you’re artistic or creative, bouts of sadness will be normal. Most of our wounds aren’t even our fault; but healing them, that is our responsibility. what are you most looking forward to experiencing while In Orlando?

The thing I most look forward to is the fellowship and the interaction with the people. It is always something that fills me with joy to see LGBTQIA people, particularly the youth, enjoying themselves and loving themselves and feeling free to be themselves. So I’m looking forward to experiencing that joy with them!

ome out With Pride and QLatinx present reel Pride, an screening of the international LGBTQ short film, “MAr,” on Tuesday of Pride week. “MAr” is directed by PortugueseCanadian filmmaker William Vitoria. Vitoria was born in Toronto, where he lived until he was seven years old, then moved to Portugal. He moved back to Toronto 14 years later.” While living in Toronto, Vitoria saw a film that led him to make “MAr.” “I watched a film called ‘Cast no Shadow,’ it’s a Canadian film that was filmed in newfoundland,” he recalls. 42 C o m e o u t W i t h P r i d e 2 0 1 8

“The movie was good but the film’s location really got me. I thought, ‘I want to show an audience how beautiful Portugal is.’” Vitoria began work on “MAr,” meaning “The Sea” in Portuguese. “MAr” is the story of a gay couple who visit a childhood friend in Portugal, who is carrying a dark secret. Vitoria, who is openly gay, says the film is a gay love story, and explores themes of longing and betrayal. “MAr” received international acclaim, but reel Pride will be the film’s u.S. debut. Vitoria will be at the screening for a Q&A session after the film.
