CENTRAL FLORIDA AND TAMPA BAY BRING THE ENTERTAINMENT YOU’RE SURE TO LOVE
T
Jeremy Williams
HE FALL SEASON BRINGS WITH IT the chaos of a new school year, the anxiety of the holiday shopper and the frustrations of cold weather. Ok, so that last one doesn’t affect us here in Florida as badly as the rest of the nation, but the hustle and bustle of this time of year can bring about its fair share of daily stress.
That is why in entertainment, the new season (probably) kicks off in the fall. There is no greater way to forget about your troubles for a few hours than by seeing a great play at your area theater, checking out the latest exhibition at your local museum or singing along with your favorite musical icon during a live concert. Central Florida and Tampa Bay offer a wide and varied collection of theaters, concert venues, galleries, stadiums
and art centers. It may seem daunting to keep track of when and where you can ind your favorite shows and artists, but have no fear… Watermark is here. Within these pages, we have pulled together schedules from many of the most popular venues within our readership area to help guide you through the fall season. We call it Watermark’s Fall Arts Guide 2018. Now as they say, on with the show!

017 was not a great year for Kathy Griffin. After a photograph of her holding a fake, severed head of President Donald Trump surfaced all hell broke loose. Griffin had shows cancelled, she was fired from her New Year’s Eve gig on CNN and she was investigated by the federal government which landed her on the no-fly list. Griffin apologized for the photo and then disappeared from the spotlight as many in the media and on social media exclaimed that her career was over. Then the former “D-List” star decided that rather than apologizing, she was taking the controversy and running with it, and so the “Laugh Your Head Off World Tour” was born. Griffin took her Trump jokes and celebrity gossip and headed overseas for the first time in her career with a 23-city tour. Now she’s back in the U.S. to make America sip tea again with a 27date North American run which brings her to Orlando’s Bob Carr Theater on Sept. 13.

n less than a decade, RuPaul has taken drag out of the clubs and put it out in the mainstream, boosting its popularity to heights even Mama Ru could never could have imagined. The show, and its host, have racked up 23 Emmy Award nominations (winning four of them) and has become one of the highestrated shows on cable television. It’s also made genuine superstars out of many of the competing queens, with the popularity of some rivaling that of A-list movie stars, pop divas and the world’s biggest sports personalities. With a spotlight that big and bright, it’s no wonder that the official “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Werq the World” tour sells out venues around the globe. After working the runways in Latin America and Europe, the queens are back in the U.S. and are heading to The Plaza Live in Orlando on Oct. 26. Hosted by celebrity judge Michelle Visage, come see amazing performances by Aquaria, Asia O’Hara, Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka, Kameron Michaels, Kim Chi and Violet Chachki.

E
lton John is as legendary as they come. Just as with other musical legends like The Rolling Stones, Madonna or Cher, John’s concerts are the ones that celebrities go to so that they can fangirl out while standing next to us mere mortals. Since his first studio album— 1969’s “Empty Sky”—hit record stores, John has been busting out hit after hit for the last 50 years. John, by the numbers, is impressive enough. With more than 30 albums released, he has 50 Top 40 hits, seven consecutive number one albums, 9 number one singles, 6 Grammy Awards, a Tony Award and an Oscar. But to truly know the impact John has had on music, art and pop culture all you need to do is look at his catalog of songs and you are certain to see many tunes that define who you are and many of the events of your past —they include “Rocket Man,” “Your Song,” “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and “Candle In The Wind,” just to name a few. Now John is ready to say goodbye to the road and will pass through Orlando and Tampa with “Farewell Yellow Brick Road,” his final tour. Don’t miss out on your last chance to see this icon live. Troye Sivan
T
roye Sivan’s had a busy 23 years. The singer-songwriter’s roots in the entertainment industry date back to 2006 with a televised “Australian Idol” duet. He soon found himself playing a young Wolverine in “X-Men Origins” and starring with John Cleese in “Spud.” Sivan began amassing YouTube followers at just 12 years old, coming out as gay to his pre-superstardom, halfmillion subscribers at 18. Years later, he’d debut several wildly successful EPs and his first full-length studio album “Blue Neighbourhood,” collaborating with fellow singer-songwriter Betty Who in the process. It’s with “Bloom,” his sophomore offering and concurrent North American tour that his career has fully blossomed. It’s led to “Saturday Night Live” performances, radio play and mainstream critical acclaim. Sivan’s “The Bloom Tour” opens with the up-and-coming transgender artist Kim Petras and features Sivan’s latest songs “My, My, My!” and the titular “Bloom.” The hits have been heralded as groundbreaking reflections of the modern LGBTQ experience, celebrated by Sivan in both his lyrics and music videos. The album and tour also feature “Dance to This,” Sivan’s duet with pop icon Ariana Grande—and St. Petersburg concert-goers can do exactly that in September.

Eddie Izzard
A
ctivist, actor and author Eddie Izzard’s thirty-year career has been as provocative and fabulous as the comedian himself. The self-described “transgender guy,” “transvestite” and “wannabe lesbian” has lived an authentic life for decades in the public eye. That’s evident in “Believe Me: A Memoir of Love, Death, and Jazz Chickens,” published in 2017 to critical acclaim. Izzard’s intelligent humor dishes on historical and sexual politics, mad ancient kings and chickens with guns, the synopsis advises, all while reflecting on the childhood loss of his mother, his time in boarding school and his sexuality. It further details his own time in comedy, film, politics and philanthropy. It was the buzzworthy book that launched Izzard’s worldwide tour of the same name, now dazzling audiences stateside. Each stop on “The Believe Me Tour” features the iconic stand-up comedy synonymous with Izzard’s unique brand as he shares personal photos, discusses his experiences and reads from the memoir. To add to the unique experience, Izzard will also participate in a question and answer session with his audience—something fans won’t want to miss. Jane Lynch’s
“A Swingin’ Little Christmas”
E
mmy and Golden Globe awardwinning Jane Lynch has brought glee to fans worldwide for years, and now she’s bringing some Christmas cheer. Known for hosting NBC’s “Hollywood Game Night,” and her roles in mockumentaries like “Best in Show” and animated features like “Wreck-It Ralph,” Lynch became a household name as Sue Sylvester during her six-season run on Fox’s hit musical series “Glee.” Her musical career didn’t end with the mega-hit series, however, subsequently playing Miss Hannigan in the Broadway revival of “Annie.” She also launched a tour of “See Jane Sing,” her own musical cabaret. Lynch was joined by Kate Flannery (who played Meredith on “The Office”), “Glee” vocal producer Tim Davis and the Southern California jazz staples known as The Tony Guerrero Quintet. Her cabaret partners join Lynch once again with for her latest holiday tour and album of the same name, singin’ and swingin’ the best of season’s greetings. Christmas favorites include “Up on the Housetop,” “Jingle Bells,” “We Three Kings” and more than a few original hits. Jane Lynch’s “A Swingin’ Little Christmas” is a holiday must for those in Tampa in Orlando.
