CENTRAL FLORIDA, TAMPA BAY GET BACK TO THE ARTS IN 2021 BY JEREMY WILLIAMS

fter shelving our annual Fall Arts Guide due to the COVID-19 pandemic which forced theaters, concert halls, museums and arenas to close up last year, we are back with our annual glossy, playbill-style Spring Arts Guide. It’s filled with a detailed schedule of shows, exhibits, concerts, festivals, conventions and more happening throughout Central Florida and Tampa Bay this spring and summer. Usually out at the beginning of the year, we postponed this guide as things weren’t quite back to where they needed to be for most venues to reopen, but as more and more people are getting vaccinated and adhering to safety guidelines, we have been able to pull together a full schedule for you. We aren’t out of the woods yet, so as you flip through these pages you will still find some virtual options for you to get your entertainment fix if you are still cautious about going out. But if you feel inclined

to resume attending in-person events, have we got a guide for you. We have also highlighted some fantastic performers, exhibits and events that we think you will not want to miss. This guide covers the Space Coast, Daytona Beach, Orlando, Lakeland, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Sarasota and all the amazing spaces in between from now to the end of the summer, so keep it handy. All listings are accurate as of press, but please do keep in mind that due

to the continued pandemic, all venues and showtimes are subject to changes, postponements and cancellations. Each venue open and listed has its own social distancing and safety precautions that you will need to adhere to. We have included contact information and website addresses within the listings and encourage you to review those safety measures before purchasing tickets and heading to the venue. Now, on with the shows!

“Hedwig and the Angry Inch” is a landmark piece of musical theater because of how it unapologetically deals with issues such as gender identity, sexual expression and unhealthy relationships. What makes this rock musical even more impressive is while these topics are widely discussed today, “Hedwig” premiered Off-Broadway in 1998 when they were not talked about publicly by most. Created by John Cameron Mitchell with music and lyrics by Stephen Trask, “Hedwig” is the story of a fictional punk-rock band fronted by a genderqueer singer living in East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Seduced by the call of the West, Hedwig marries an American soldier. In order to accompany him to the U.S., he has a sex reassignment surgery to become a woman. After the surgery goes wrong, Hedwig is abandoned by her new husband and left, of all places, in the middle of Kansas. “Hedwig” had a Tony-winning revival in April 2014 which saw the likes of Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells, Darren Criss and Taye Diggs take up the titular role. “This genre-bending, fourth-wallsmashing musical sensation, with a pulsing score and electrifying performances,” now comes to The Henegar in Melbourne at the end of April.

On June 12, 2016, Central Florida suffered great loss when a gunman entered the Pulse nightclub and took the lives of 49 individuals and injured countless others. In the aftermath, the response of love from the people of Orlando, across the country and around the world for the community showed no matter the tragedy that “we will not let hate win.” People from all over poured into Central Florida showing their support and leaving cards, photographs, flowers, candles, stuffed animals, flags and more creating memorials throughout the city. Almost immediately the team at the Orange County Regional History Center began collecting these items and safeguarding them, and each June since the Pulse tragedy they have displayed a collection of these items in an exhibit at the history center. For the 2021 remembrance exhibition, “COMMUNITY: Five Years After the Pulse Tragedy” visitors will follow the story of Pulse, from its earliest conception through 2016, as well as the response to the devastating event and the lasting impact in the time since. Sponsored by the Contigo Fund, “COMMUNITY: Five Years After the Pulse Tragedy” will be on display from May 29-Aug. 15 with free admission offered to everyone June 5-13.

The Gulfport Players make their return to the stage this Pride month! Based on the children’s book “And Tango Makes Three,” this heartwarming true story depicts the tale of two male penguins from Central Park who adopted an egg together. It introduces audiences to Roy and Silo, who hatched and raised a female chick named Tango. While the 2005 picture book was praised for its depiction of diversity, showcasing and validating same-sex families for readers young and old, it also drew the ire of some conservative groups. That led openly LGBTQ playwright Marc Acito to hatch a tale of his own. The award-winning advocate first translated Roy and Silo’s story for the stage in 2011, and “Birds of a Feather: A Story About Love” has been celebrated ever since. “Roy and Silo are your typical gay, American dads with one noticeable exception: they’re penguins,” the play’s solicitation reads. “These two Central Park Zoo chinstrap penguins have partnered and adopted an egg, but will these two be able to raise little Tango together?” Following the show’s 2020 postponement, the Gulfport Players are ready for audiences to flock back. They plan on showing everyone that love is love, even in a zoo.

Nickelodeon star and YouTube personality JoJo Siwa takes Tampa Bay by storm as her first-ever live concert tour! Originally scheduled for May 2020, the singer and social media superstar has shared that she’s eager to hit the road and reconnect with fans. Siwa did so in a big way in January when she came out as a member of the LGBTQ community. The 17-yearold entertainer first teased the news on TikTok by dancing to Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” for more than 30 million followers. She then confirmed it on Instagram for more than 10 million of her fans. The performer first captivated audiences during two seasons of Lifetime’s “Dance Moms” before entering into an exclusive licensing partnership with Nickelodeon in 2016. She and the entertainment network have since cultivated her brand with apparel, appearances in films like “Blurt!” and albums like “D.R.E.A.M. The Music,” released in 2018. Siwa’s tour is sure to highlight her popular singles “Boomerang,” “Kid in a Candy Store,” “Hold The Drama” and more.
