Well, right here with Watermark’s 2022 Spring Arts Guide of course. Central Florida and Tampa Bay are filled with some of the most amazing venues and talented performers found anywhere in the world. We’re known for both wonderful local productions and fantastic traveling shows, and this guide will help you to see as much of our area’s art as possible. We’ve searched websites, press releases and
announcements for dozens and dozens of museums, theaters, venues, festivals, arenas and more to bring you as complete an arts listing as we could. We have also highlighted a few performers you don’t want to miss. We were not able to include everything that Central Florida and Tampa Bay has to offer, so along with as

Garth Brooks
G
arth Brooks is one of the biggest stars in the history of music. With more than a dozen albums under his belt, Brooks has a record-setting nine albums that have received diamond status, 20 Billboard No. 1 singles and has sold more than 170 million records worldwide making him the best-selling solo music artist in history and second only to The Beatles in total sold. Brooks was a supportive LGBTQ ally back in the ‘90s before America, and most of the world, had started to swing on the pendulum to the side of LGBTQ rights; before “Will & Grace” and before Ellen came out. Brooks’ community support started with loving unconditionally his openly gay half-sister, Betsy Smittle, and blossomed into cries for equality with his 1992 song “We Shall Be Free.” In the song, Brooks sings “When we’re free to love anyone we choose / When this world’s big enough for all different views / When we can all worship from our own kind of pew / Then we shall be free.” Brooks brings his support, hits and energy to Orlando’s Camping World Stadium in March for the only Florida stop on his worldwide stadium tour.

Wanda Sykes
N
amed one of the 25 funniest people in America by Entertainment Weekly, Wanda Sykes has been cracking audiences up with her nononsense comedy for more than three decades. Sykes grew up in Maryland where she first took a stab at stand-up comedy in 1987. In the early ‘90s, Sykes moved to New York City to pursue comedy fulltime and the rest is history. Sykes went on to appear in dozens of films and TV shows as well as showcased her talents as a writer on shows like “The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show,” the “Roseanne” reboot and “The Chris Rock Show,” for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award. In 2010, Sykes, who is openly gay and a passionate LGBTQ rights activist, won GLAAD’s Stephen F. Kolzak Award for being an LGBTQ media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting acceptance. Sykes is back on tour and heading to Florida with a pair of stops this May at the Dr. Phillips Center in Orlando and Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg.

The Thaddeus Mumford, jR. Venice Collection
J
ean-Michel Basquiat rose to fame in the art world in the 1980s as part of the Neoexpressionism movement. Getting his start as a popular graffiti artist in New York City, Basquiat - who was bisexual - was one of the most famous artists in the world at the time of his death in 1988 from a heroine overdose. He was only 27 years old. Since his passing, Basquiat’s popularity has only grown and is now regarded as one of the most important and influential artists of the 20th century. The Orlando Museum of Art presents a rare group of the artist’s paintings, which are from a private collection, for the first time in their gallery. Titled “Heroes & Monsters,” the exhibit features 25 works that Basquiat created while living for a short time in Los Angeles in 1982. The exhibit, which opened in February, will be on display until June 30, 2023. The museum will also host several events including screenings of the 1996 film “Basquiat” April 3 and the 2017 documentary “Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat” May 1.

latinum-selling popstar David Archuleta Brings his “OK, All Right” tour to Florida! The runner up on “American Idol” in 2008, at only 16 years old Archuleta received 44% of nearly 100 million votes in the singing competition’s seventh season. The singersongwriter hasn’t slowed down since, signing with Sony/Jive Records and touring the world after that. After recording eight studio albums, Archuleta publicly came out to his more than 400,000 followers on social media in 2021. He shared that he’d initially come out as gay to friends and family in 2014, something he struggled with as a devout Mormon. “There are people experiencing the same feelings of being LGBTQIA+ … who are wrestling to follow their beliefs that are so important to them, just as I have,” Archuleta explained. “Please consider making room to be more understanding and compassionate to those who are LGBTQIA+ … and those who are trying to find that balance with their faith.” Archuleta’s most authentic sound yet is sure to dazzle audiences this Spring.

A
merican jazz pioneer Billie Holiday’s impact on modern music is undeniable. The bisexual singer, known for her innovative and improvisational style, has inspired generations of singers across the globe since the 1930s. Also known as Lady Day, the icon enjoyed mainstream success through the 40s and released her final album in 1958, one year before her death at only 44. Multiple works chronicling her career have been produced, including the award-winning “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.” The piece first premiered in 1986. Its celebrated revivals include a production from Los Angeles’ Ebony Repertory Theatre, presented by St. Petersburg’s freeFall Theatre March 25 – April 24. Not intended for young audiences, the incomparable Karole Foreman promises to dazzle the masses with “more than a dozen musical numbers” this Spring, as only Lady Day herself could.

et your umbrellas, because this Spring it’s raining fellas when Todrick Hall brings “The Femuline Tour” to Tampa and Orlando. The singer and choreographer’s latest stage show spotlights his fourth studio album of the same name. Released in June 2021, “Femuline” features hit songs synonymous with Hall’s unique brand of LGBTQ pop. It featured an all-star list of collaborators and was billed as “an open love letter to the LGBTQ community.” The album also illustrates Hall’s efforts to embrace and explore both his feminine and masculine sides. The artist hopes his work will help others do the same. In an interview with Watermark last year, Hall noted that LGBTQ life and love remains underrepresented in mainstream music. “I’m grateful for the strides that we’ve made, but we’re nowhere near where we need to be in normalizing being a part LGBTQ community,” he shared. It’s something the artist is sure to highlight on tour.

APRIL 15–MAY 11 From the creators of Ragtime comes the World Premiere Musical
FRANK GALATI Music by STEPHEN FLAHERTY Lyrics by LYNN AHRENS Based on the novel A Death in the Family by JAMES AGEE Book by
Based, in part, on the play All the Way Home by TAD MOSEL Directed by FRANK GALATI This moving and innovative new musical reunites the dynamic Tony Award®-winning creative team behind Ragtime, one of the most beloved musicals of all time. Based on James Agee’s autobiographical, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, A Death in the Family, the story begins as Agee struggles to write his greatest work—about the event that touched his young life and the effect it had on his mother, his town, and his own future. The World Premiere of Knoxville is made possible by a generous grant from The Roy Cockrum Foundation. Knoxville Sponsors
A powerful illumination of the forces that shape who we are, Knoxville is a universal coming-of-age story about family, faith, and love—and about the boy who will grow up to write it. With a sweeping musical score and an extraordinary creative team and cast, this world premiere is a must-see event! Contains mature themes. Recommended for age 10+.
