N A RECENT INTERVIEW WITH GAL PAL SARAH JESSICA PARKER in V Magazine, English singer/ songwriter Sam Smith says for the first time in his life he thinks he deserves to be happy, and why shouldn’t he? The London native has been awarded 26 times for his music; that includes winning four Grammys, a Golden Globe and an Oscar. He has five Billboard Top 10 singles, debuted his most recent album —The Thrill of It All—at number one and has made it “Facebook Official” with 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn. All of this and Smith is only 25 years old. Smith has become the unofficial crooner for the lonely hearted thanks to radio staples such as “Stay With Me, “I’m Not the Only One,” “Lay Me Down” and “Too Good At Goodbyes” keeping us all rocking in a corner curled up in the fetal position. At least we’re rocking slowly to a good beat. Smith is bringing his happy life and sad songs to the Sunshine State with The Thrill of It All Tour this summer with one night in Orlando and one night in Tampa.

FTER MEETING IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL and becoming one of the most successful folk rock duos to emerge from the 80s, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers— better known as the Indigo Girls—are still rocking out and touring the world. With 16 studio albums under their belts, these LGBTQ icons have not only continued to challenge themselves but also their audiences with songs and lyrics full of honestly, grit and soul. Their catalog boasts such classics as “Closer to Fire,” “Galileo,” “Least Complicated,” “Power of Two,” “Ghost, “Kid Fears” and “Shame On You,” just to name a few. In 2006, the Indigo Girls teamed up with singer Pink to record “Dear Mr. President,” a song that was an open letter criticizing then-president George W. Bush. The Indigo Girls have always been a vocal duo against political and social injustice, both in song and in the streets. They have championed causes and held benefit concerts for everything from LGBTQ rights to the environment to abolishing the death penalty. Three decades after the release of their first major studio album, the Indigo Girls are strumming their guitars in Orlando and St. Petersburg live this March.

NE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THINGS ABOUT HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH is how it openly and unapologetically deals with issues such as gender identity, sexual expression and unhealthy relationships. What’s even more impressive is while these topics are widely discussed today, Hedwig and the Angry Inch premiered Off-Broadway in 1998 when almost no one was talking about them. Hedwig and the Angry Inch was created by John Cameron Mitchell with music and lyrics by Stephen Trask. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the story of a fictional punk-rock band fronted by a genderqueer singer/songwriter living in East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Seduced by the call of the West, Hedwig marries an American soldier. In order to accompany him to the U.S., he has a sex reassignment surgery to become a woman. After the surgery goes wrong Hedwig is abandoned by her new husband and left, of all places, in the middle of Kansas. Starring Benjamin Cox as the titular character, Hedwig and the Angry Inch comes to the Cocoa Village Playhouse the last weekend of June.

OR THOSE UNABLE TO ATTEND THE NATIONAL THEATRE’S PRODUCTION of Angels in America on Broadway, the award-winning play’s new staging, told in two parts, is coming to Tampa Bay this Spring. Tony Kushner’s Part I: Millennium Approaches and Part II: Perestroika, which first astonished audiences a quartercentury ago, will be broadcast on the high-definition screen in Ferguson Hall at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. Directed by Tony Award-winning Marianne Elliott (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time), the cast is led by Andrew Garfield (The Amazing SpiderMan, Hacksaw Ridge) and Nathan Lane (The Producers, The Birdcage, et al.) The contemporary drama details a group of New Yorkers amidst America’s AIDS crisis of the 1980s, and is set against the Reagan administration’s penchant for conservative silence, the fear-mongering of McCarthyism and the timely woes of immigration, religion and climate change. The National Theatre calls it “as politically incendiary as any play in the American canon,” noting that it “also manages to be, at turns, hilariously irreverent and heartbreakingly humane.” In other words, bring tissues.

T’S TIME TO BREAK OUT YOUR BEST STILETTOS, because Kinky Boots is returning to Florida. The winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Choreography, the celebrated musical was written by pop icon Cyndi Lauper and Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein. It’s inspired by a true story and based on the 2005 film of the same name. Kinky Boots follows the unlikely and fabulous friendship of the dry but dapper Charlie Price and the wise and witty drag queen Lola. Both hilarious and heartwarming, the show sees the duo embark on a journey from Price’s failing men’s shoe factory in North Hampton to the catwalks of Milan. Lola soon teaches her newfound comrade in legs that “the sex is in the heel,” and convinces him that the only way to save his business is to produce women’s shoes… for men. Through song and stilettos, the two teach one another— and the audience—to pursue the truth, to learn something new, to let love shine and that you can change the world when you change your mind.
