Inspired by such French masters of landscape painting as Corot, Cézanne and Gauguin, Louis Dewis painted scenes of cities, villages and the countryside throughout Belgium and France. His work is now being reevaluated after a trove of paintings were discovered in the attic of a family home in Paris. Art Bouquets Central Florida and Tampa Bay are blooming with the best springtime entertainment
T
Jeremy Williams he days are longer, the sun is brighter and the flowers are in bloom, so that can only mean one thing ... springtime is here!
And with that our annual Spring Arts Guide ushers in a new season of music, art and live theater. Central Florida and Tampa Bay’s artistic soil is rich and fertile, and the amazing talent that each area offers feeds and waters local productions with such care that each show, concert and exhibit blossom into beautiful works of art that must be viewed. Watermark wants to help you see as much of our area’s art as possible so in these pages we have gathered as many arts centers, museums, theaters, venues, festivals, arenas and concert halls and highlighted some of their most interesting and intriguing shows in one handy-dandy guide.
We were not able to include everything that Central Florida and Tampa Bay has to offer, so along with a few selections we have included phone numbers and websites for each of the venues so you can see what other beautiful creations they have incubating in their greenhouse. This guide covers the Space Coast, Daytona Beach, Orlando, Lakeland, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Sarasota and all the amazing spaces in between from mid-February to the end of the summer, so keep it handy and see as much of the local art scene as you can. You will not be disappointed ... and now, on with the show!

ariana grande
A
RIANA GRANDE IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST performers in the world today. The Florida native (she was born in Boca Raton) has had her voice compared to the likes of Mariah Carey and Celine Dion, and some have even placed her among Cher, Madonna and Lady Gaga as music divas who have become LGBTQ icons. Not bad for someone who hasn’t even celebrated her 26th birthday yet. Grande got her start on Broadway in 2008 in the musical “13” and started to get name recognition playing the ditzy but lovable Cat Valentine on Nickelodeon’s “Victorious” and its spinoff “Sam & Cat” from 2010-2014. But it was the release of her first album, 2013’s “Yours Truly,” that made her a superstar. Grande’s list of accomplishments over the last five years rivals that of performers who have been in the business 10 times longer than she has. She has earned three number-one albums, has a social media following in the tens of millions and has won dozens of accolades. This past year was arguably Grande’s biggest as she was named Billboard’s “Woman of the Year” and earned the clapback of 2018 thanks to her hit single, “thank u, next.” You have two chances to catch Grande on tour as she visits Orlando and Tampa this May.

“FUn home” A
LISON BECHDEL DIDN’T ANTICIPATE THAT HER AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL GRAPHIC NOVEL “Fun Home,” published to critical acclaim in 2006, would inspire an awardwinning musical of the same name. But it did exactly that, opening Off-Broadway in 2013 and taking Broadway by storm just two years later. “Fun Home” went on to receive 12 Tony Award nominations and score five wins, including Best Musical. The groundbreaking tale was the first musical on Broadway to feature a lesbian protagonist, introducing theatergoers to three versions of Bechdel as she guides viewers through her journey of self-discovery. Recalling the mysteries of growing up with her closeted father in their family’s funeral home is the first version, a 43-year-old narrator drafting her memoir. The second is 19-year-old “Medium Alison,” an Oberlin student coming to terms with her own sexuality, and the third is 10-year-old “Small Alison,” a child at war with her father’s will. “It seemed to get to the emotional heart of things more directly than my book had,” Bechdel has conceded about the musical, “and certainly more directly than my parents and I ever had in real life.” Viewers can grab a copy of the memoir on Amazon and check out American Stage’s upcoming production to judge for themselves.

LIVE THE BEACH It’s a paradise: 35 miles of white sand, beach communities that celebrate creativity, and Florida’s largest LGBTQ celebration, St. Pete Pride, drawing 200,000 people to the streets every June. Add the crown jewel of all things art in Florida, the Dalí Museum, a must-see-feel-do experience. If all that’s not enough to love, St. Pete/Clearwater’s pride vibe is alive and well, which is a beautiful thing. Welcome.

S
COTTISH-BORN SUPERSTAR ALAN CUMMING, KNOWN AS MUCH FOR HIS WORK ONSTAGE as he is onscreen, is celebrating 10 years as a United States citizen. Ever the showboat, he’s inviting you to join him via his new tour “Legal Immigrant.” The bisexual icon – who has a Tony and has hosted the Tony Awards – advises he has “performed with Jay Z and Liza with a Z,” has “a soap called ‘Cumming in a Bar’ and even a bar called ‘Club Cumming.’” He also frequently touts that he’s “made back-to-back films with Stanley Kubrick and the Spice Girls,” playing everyone from God to Hitler, including the teleporting mutant Nightcrawler, a Smurf (twice) and the infamous EmCee in “Cabaret” (thrice). The show will offer Cumming’s perspective on all that and more, focusing on growing older and what it feels like to be an immigrant in Donald Trump’s America. To top it all off, theatergoers can expect some “true, old-fashioned cabaret … laughter, tears and, of course, provocation!”

UEEN AND ADAM LAMBERT ARE HITTING THE ROAD TOGETHER AGAIN for a North American tour called “The Rhapsody Approaches.” The six-week tour will hit 23 cities starting in July and has two planned stops in Florida—one in Fort Lauderdale and one at the Amalie Arena in Tampa Aug. 18. The band looks to capitalize on the recent success of the Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which stars Rami Malek as the band’s charismatic frontman Freddie Mercury and has earned more than $800 million worldwide. The tour will feature original bandmembers Brian May and Roger Taylor (portrayed in the film by Gwilym Lee and Ben Hardy, respectively) with Lambert on lead vocals. Queen’s last tour was a sold-out run of 10 shows at the MGM Park Theater in Las Vegas in Sept. 2018. Lambert first shared a stage with Queen as a contestant on the eighth season of “American Idol” in 2009. Since then he has played more than 180 gigs with the legendary group.
