It’s that great, festive time again:

taMpa pride 2018

W

e are pleased in our 4th year, on Saturday, March 24 to have accomplished so much in the Tampa Bay LGBTA community. Coming together within the community are city and county leaders, businesses, faith groups, nonprofits and individuals that all make up our great community. Equality, diversity, inclusiveness and celebration are values that we all share and enjoy. Our 2018 theme, “Diversity creates community,” stems from what Tampa is all about. The many board and director volunteers that help make TAMPA PRIDE thrive come from all aspects of our vast community. They include a doctor, business people, a food director, a community pastor, a CPA, bartenders, a condo manager, a retired straight couple, a social service worker, other retirees, real estate brokers, college students, a banker and a crazy gay couple. Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, Straight & Allies. They all take part in making a positive, uplifting celebration of community pride. This year, watch for new additions. We have a FREE Health & Wellness Fair and also a New Artisans Fair at HCC Ybor, featuring artists, sculptures and startup businesses showing off their new ideas and projects. The Festival Marketplace in the HCC Ybor Campus area will be filled with many local businesses, theater groups, corporations, fitness centers, churches, Pride retailers and nonprofits leading the way for information and awareness for community members to share in the expanding LGBTA growth in the Tampa Bay area.

The Diversity Parade will again begin at 1 p.m. on Nuccio Blvd., travelling down the infamous 7th Ave in the GaYBOR District in historic Ybor City. We have an outstanding grand marshal list of community heroes and honorees. Our fab Tampa Mayor will be heading the corps in the most interesting way. Over 150 Diversity Parade units will not only be parading their stuff, but educating and entertaining with more area organizations, social groups, religious groups, businesses and Tampa Krewes participating. Tampa’s After Dark parties are unmatched in the great historic GaYBOR District, with shopping, hotels, clubs, bars, restaurants and fun sidewalk sightseeing. Remember: TAMPA PRIDE is all about the super fun! Last year’s tribute to the community honoring Orlando’s Pulse victims, Pulse’s owners, Orlando first responders and local Orlando leaders had a welcoming meeting with our very own Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, Tampa Police Chief Ward, and Congresswoman Kathy Castor. It was moving and most memorable. A full line-up of activities and events is available at TAMPAPRIDE.org. Come Out to TAMPA PRIDE 2018, a fun-packed day for everybody. 40,000 of your old and new friends will be there. Thank You from the entire board and directors of TAMPA PRIDE 2018.We will be seeing you and hope you enjoy TAMPA PRIDE 2018!

Meet yoUr Grand Marshals Grand Marshal: reVerend JaKob hero-shaW

“t

ampa Pride is an incredibly important opportunity for community building,” Reverend Jakob Hero-Shaw, senior pastor at the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) says. “We live in a culture where it is common to have thousands of Facebook friends, yet we can be profoundly lonely.” Hero-Shaw says that there’s “great value in taking to the streets and celebrating who we are created to be,” noting that being selected as one this year’s grand marshals is an honor. Aside

from his daily work as MCC’s senior pastor, he also serves on the church’s worldwide denominational governing board and is the coordinator for the Transgender Religious Roundtable at the Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies at the Pacific School of Religion. The reverend’s passion is a byproduct of his drive. Hero-Shaw is a graduate of the Pacific School of Religion in California, where he earned a Master of Divinity degree, Master of Arts degree in ethics and social theory, and a Graduate Certificate in Sexuality and Religion. He and his husband Alan, married in April 2017, are currently raising teenage fraternal twins. The duo told Watermark last year that they decided early in their relationship that “the kids come first.” “It is a blessing to be able to represent my church community and to set an example for my two kids,” Hero-Shaw says. “This is what it looks like to stand up and celebrate who we are as a community and as a family.”

In naming her as a grand marshal this year, Tampa Pride heralded her work in redefining community policing and cited her “innovative approach to fighting crime.” “She built a reputation for working side by side with residents, community leaders, business owners and neighboring law enforcement agencies to reduce crime and improve the quality of life in Tampa,” Pride says.

ohn and Nancy Desmond are intrinsically-tied to the Tampa Bay LGBTQ community and to Ybor City in particular. The duo founded the Tampa chapter of PFLAG in 2011 in support of their newly-out son. In 2017, they also founded the organization’s St. Petersburg chapter. “What an unbelievable experience it has been for us, two retired folks, to be a part of the diverse, loving, and welcoming life of the Tampa Bay LGBTQ community,” Nancy Desmond says. “Many LGBTQ families are uplifted and validated by Pride celebrations, ours included.” Many LGBTQ families are uplifted and validated by the Desmonds as well. On most weekends, they visibly support their gay son (and the community) by holding up signs encouraging tolerance and love across from the protesters holding anti-LGBTQ signs on Ybor City’s 7th Avenue. “We are honored and truly humbled to be chosen as this year’s Tampa Pride Grand Couple,” Nancy Desmond says. “Life is grand!” A man of action but also brevity, John Desmond agrees with his wife. “Ditto!”

love Ybor because it doesn’t matter where you came from, what you do or what your socioeconomic status is,” Ernie Webb says. “You can come down here and find a fun place to have a great time.” As one of the co-founders and owners of the popular Ybor hotspot Honey Pot, Webb is partly responsible for that. This year, the 14,000-square-foot dance club celebrated its eleventh anniversary. Aside from his entrepreneurial endeavors, Webb is also the director of New Home Sales for the local Shimberg Homes, and was the first LGBTQ community ally to serve as the Gaybor District Coalition’s president. “I’m involved because I enjoy being involved and I’ve become friends with a lot of people in this neighborhood,” Webb says. He adds that learning he’d receive an award for impacting the local community “felt amazing.” “It was a giant honor,” he says. “I never expected any kind of recognition.”

r. Shawn Robinson is very dedicated to Ybor City, something more than evident on his resume. As the president of Hillsborough Community College’s Ybor City campus, of which he’s served since 2007, he works as a community representative to promote open communication, trust, support and accountability. He also serves as a board member of the Ybor City Chamber of Commerce, the Ybor City Development Corporation, the Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County and the Tampa Historic Streetcar Board of Directors. “I am proud to have been recognized by Tampa Pride,” he says. “It has been my honor to assist and serve those in the LGBTQ community in Ybor City and Tampa.” “I believe that everyone deserves equal rights and equal opportunities to succeed in life and express who they are without fear of discrimination, reprisals, or harm,” he adds. “Tampa Pride showcases the best in the community and I am proud to be part of it.”

t

he Suncoast Softball League, the Tampa Bay area’s largest LGBTQ sports league, is dedicated to promoting sportsmanship, tolerance and acceptance of the LGBTQ community. The organization touts that it was first organized in 1993 to promote a friendly, competitive and emotionally-safe environment for gay men and women in the area to play softball, and in its 25th year, it’s more committed to the community than ever. “The league isn’t just about sports,” producer Gerre Reynolds says. “For all of our 25 years, we’ve raised money, lots of money, for our community. We raise thousands of dollars that we donate to local charities.” Recipients over the years have included the Tampa AIDS Network, Athena House for homeless female veterans, Suncoast Animal League, Vets for Pets and Meals on Wheels, amongst others. “We also volunteer with many of our sister organizations,” Reynolds adds, “with league members in leadership positions in both Tampa and St. Pete Pride.”
