t
here have been many changes in our community and many changes in our lives. That’s part of why the board and directors of TAMPA PRIDE 2019 chose “Milestones” as this year’s theme for our annual festival and diversity parade event. This year we also capture the historical significance of a time 50 years ago. Yes, this is the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York City. A time when a small group of gay people in a small bar made history and a stepping stone in America’s history to having gay rights and equality in our country. Some say it stemmed from the loss of a gay icon; it was the funeral day for actress/ singer Judy Garland and drag queens in New York City were mourning. They could take no more emotional devastation from thug policeman and a major LGBT milestone occurred! We look at changes within our community with tears in many eyes. Some tears for joy, as on June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court said that same-sex couples fundamentally had the right to marry who they loved. It was a new guaranteed right of the land. Our Clerk of Hillsborough County Court Pat Frank took it upon herself to hold marriage ceremonies in the wee morning hours in the county building and then across the street in the park. A long group of people followed, making a commitment and marrying their partners. Many shook
their heads in tears, saying, “I never thought this would ever happen in my lifetime.” Civil rights end discrimination in our LGBT lives in so many ways. What a Milestone! Then brought national tears of sorrow as a deranged shooter went wild, killing innocent Orlando LGBTA brothers and sisters at Pulse Night Club on June 12, 2016—killing 49 and wounding another 53 patrons. Many were friends and acquaintances we all knew! This happened at a gay bar; place people thought was a safe zone from bullies, conservative bigots and family members, some not so friendly. America came together because of a tragedy. So the scope balances on many fronts. Good and evil. That makes a Milestone! So I am proud to say in Tampa too, we have a 2019 Milestone! We THANK our outgoing Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn who has helped change the fabric of our mighty city. More LGBT individuals are moving to Tampa every day and the city received a perfect 100 score for the first time in the prestigious Human Rights Campaign Municipality Index. I, too have a Milestone: my partner, Mark Bias and I just celebrated 42 loving years together. So make your plans to come to Tampa March 30, 2019 for the “Funnest Pride in America!” That is a MILESTONE!

ampa Pride’s fifth year officially began Nov. 17, 2018 with the inaugural Pride-Zoo-La, an unforgettable evening of entertainment inside ZooTampa at Lowry Park. Attendees enjoyed an enchanting stroll through the park to the Safari Lodge in the African section of ZooTampa as the Tampa Bay Pride Band performed. They were subsequently treated to a juried art show highlighting local talent, where they also participated in a silent auction with over 50 raffles before partaking in a giraffe feeding with ZooTampa staff. DJ Greg Anderson provided additional music as Power Infiniti presented performances by FENTI and cast, flanking presentations by Tampa Pride President Carrie West. West was joined on stage by then-Tampa mayoral candidates David Straz, Ed Turanchik, Jane Castor and
Topher Morrison, who each outlined their support for equality. “You’re just seeing the beginning of what our new Tampa Pride is going to be all about,” West shared, stressing the celebration’s climbing attendance. “We thought we’d have 10,000 our first year and had over 20,000. Our second year, we said we’ll have 20,000 and we had 30,000. “Our third year we said 25,000 just to be safe – 35,000,” he continued. “Last year we were 40,000 and we greatly appreciate all of your help in making it happen.” He noted that Tampa Pride had reached its fifth year, in part, because of Tampa’s inclusive nature. He pointed to the city’s perfect score in the Human Rights Campaign’s 2018 Municipal Equality Index as an example. It examines how inclusive laws and policies are for LGBTQ people in cities nationwide. “We were honored when Tampa received a 100,” West said. “We are not going back; we are only going to go forward.”

As the show director at Ybor’s Honey Pot and Drag Queen Bingo hostess at Hamburger Mary’s Brandon, the award-winning entertainer and LGBTQ community advocate has proudly called Tampa home for 25 years. “It’s been amazing serving this community,” she says, “and a privilege seeing change and growth!” “The Tampa Bay community as a whole is very active and supportive with each other,” DeMilo adds. “Being named one of the grand marshals for Tampa Pride is such an honor and privilege … there’s nothing more special than being loved and respected by your community! ampa Pride “brings out the best of us all,” City Side Lounge owner James Encke says. “It shows that at least for one day we can all stand together, putting aside our differences to realize we are a small community and that we need to look out for and help one another.” He says the celebration highlights the diversity of the LGBTQ community, which
gives us strength. “We need to accept and respect each other,” Encke stresses. “We need to stand next to each other and lend support and encouragement.” The businessman says he was in shock to be named a grand marshal but that he’s honored. “Tampa Pride is not just on 7th Ave. in Ybor,” he adds. “It’s at Cristoph’s on Armenia, City Side on Henderson, Hamburger Mary’s in Brandon. It’s located in every business, home and venue that flies the rainbow flag. Thank you again for the opportunity to serve our community.”

attle of the Houses 2.0” helped fundraise for the fifth annual Tampa Pride in true and fabulous fashion. The all-star talent competition was held at Honey Pot in January, pitting the Houses of Infiniti, Bone and Panic against one another for the benefit of organization. “All proceeds go to the Tampa Pride committee,” entertainer and co-organizer Power Infiniti shared, “and back into making this year’s Milestone pride event bigger and better than ever before!” The competition’s winner, with the highest score of its 12 contestants, would serve as grand marshal during Tampa Pride 2019. That winner was Ja’Staria Infiniti, representing the House of Infiniti. “A whole new world of zing was added to our events this year,” Tampa Pride President Carrie West says.
“A thought and idea spurned into the brains of a small group who are always kids at heart formed one of Tampa Bay’s great music makers,” Tampa Pride President Carrie West adds. Along with the Tampa Bay Symphonic Winds, they now boast 60 members and are an all-inclusive marching and concert band. “We are one amazing group standing and working together to be the sound of diversity and a beacon to the community,” Stevens says. “It is an amazing honor to be recognized this year.”
