Dining With Pride Ask the locals: Clifford Hobbs
W
RYAN WILLIAMS-JENT
hether it’s as a hospitality professional or as a board member of organizations like the Euclid St. Paul Neighborhood
Association and St Pete Pride, Clifford Hobbs works to create welcoming spaces for all. “As a gay, Black man, there aren’t many spaces where I feel I fully belong," he explains. "Being a part of Tampa Bay’s LGBTQIA+ community, however, I’ve been able to become the Cliff of my dreams. This community is a space where dreams meet life.” As someone who’s worked in the region’s dining scene, he’s had the opportunity to help make others' dreams come true. He’s also seen how the industry's grown. “That growth was led by our resilient local hospitality professionals,” Hobbs says. “We’ve been on the front lines of service, even through a global pandemic, providing our visitors and locals with that fun in the sun hospitality that has folks flocking to Florida. We have some amazing culinary visionaries that have helped to put Tampa Bay on the map as a true foodie city.” Watermark spoke with Hobbs about a few of his favorite places to experience all Tampa Bay’s dining scene has to offer. He details them below.
FAVORITE LGBTQ-OWNED RESTAURANTS: St. Pete has a vast community of LGBTQIA+ owned, managed and chef-led restaurants that are really killing the culinary game. A few that I strongly encourage you to check out are Uptown Eats, Roam Restaurant & Bar, Lingr Restaurant, Mixers at Old Key West Bar & Grill, 22 South Food Hall, Punky's Bar and Grill, Daddies Donuts and Delites, LALA St. Pete and more. uno Vibranz, also known as Kenneth Lawson, lights up any room she’s in. The entertainer has dazzled audiences with her
drag in and out of the pageant scene for years. “The stage is my life, my liberty, my whole world,” she explains. Vibranz
holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, something she’s used to build a captivating brand that she uses to help others. “Any way that I can help someone going through a rough patch I will gladly step in to help,” she says. “Drag has been a wonderful way to have a hand in all that. I have always had a strong belief that you put in what you get back. Karma is a tricky lady and can be a good sidekick if you do good for others.” Her favorite aspect of belonging to Tampa Bay’s LGBTQ community is its comradery. “The nightlife scene in Tampa Bay is thriving and fun," Vibranz says. "There are tons of entertaining things to experience from food, libations, entertainment (music/drag/dancing), even enjoying a night out walking the beaches and feeling the sand between your toes while you watch the sunset.” She details some of her favorites here.

Pride in Arts & Entertainment Ask the locals: Camille Barbone RYAN WILLIAMS-JENT
A
uthor, business coach and consultant Camille Barbone has more than three decades of experience in media and entertainment. The New York native – who now calls St. Petersburg home – has worked in the mainstream music industry as a manager, producer and publisher.
Today she coaches and consults on the matter, in addition to serving as a voting member of the Recording Industry Association of America. The organization
is responsible for the Grammy Awards nomination and voting process as well as certifying albums as gold and platinum. Her favorite thing about Tampa Bay’s arts and entertainment scene is that “it is always on fire.” She’s proud to enjoy it with her wife, a fellow business professional. “This area can compete with large cities like New York, LA and Chicago when it comes to the level of talent, the venues and the non-stop activities,” Barbone explains. “There is something for everyone. The events are well organized, and the great Tampa Bay weather completes the picture … I am happy to be a part of the arts community of Tampa Bay.” That’s why Watermark asked Barbone to share a few of her favorite arts and entertainment hotspots, which she does below.

Pride 365 Tampa Bay celebrates LGBTQ Pride year-round RYAN WILLIAMS-JENT
T
here's no shortage of ways to showcase your Pride in Tampa Bay. It’s been celebrated throughout the area by LGBTQ residents and visitors alike for decades, with more celebrations popping up each year.
While the largest celebrations have traditionally been held in June – chosen to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots – the desire to honor authenticity in Tampa Bay has long outgrown the month. It’s a testament to the impact the LGBTQ community has had on the region. With so many advocates and allies proudly showing their support, this list is far from complete. Be sure to read Watermark’s Central Florida and Sarasota Living with Pride guides to see how even more of Tampa Bay’s neighbors share their LGBTQ Pride, and read future issues of Watermark and visit WatermarkOnline.com for the latest details about each.

Community Care Tampa Bay organizations offer their support RYAN WILLIAMS-JENT

ctivist Barbara Gittings has been called the mother of the LGBTQ civil rights movement, celebrated for both her visibility in its infancy and for her lifelong fight to secure the community’s future. Her work began in 1958 when she founded the first East Coast chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis, the nation’s
first lesbian civil rights organization, and continued for decades in a number of other ways.
That’s because “equality means more than passing laws,” she famously shared. “The struggle is really won in the hearts and minds of the community, where it really counts.” LGBTQ advocates and allies throughout Tampa Bay have long understood that, forming organizations dedicated to changing hearts and minds alike. Learn more about some of that important work here.
