Fall Back In Central Florida and Tampa Bay are bringing back entertainment you’re sure to love
A
Jeremy Williams
FTER SKIPPING OVER LAST YEAR DUE TO
the pandemic, we are back to bring you the most comprehensive list of arts and entertainment schedules throughout the Central Florida and Tampa Bay areas. After many, many months of socially distancing, virtual events and performing solo shows in our living rooms, this fall we are looking to get back to seeing live theater, attending a concert or two, visiting museums and so much more. We also can’t wait to get back to sharing in all those entertaining experiences surrounded by our community. Central Florida and Tampa Bay offer such a wide and varied collection of theaters, concert venues, galleries, stadiums and art centers. It may seem daunting to keep track of when and where you can find your favorite shows and artists, especially since we’ve been out of the game for a bit, but have no worries, we are here to help. Within these pages, we have pulled together schedules from many of the most popular
venues within our readership area to help guide you through the fall season. We call it Watermark’s 2021 Fall Arts Guide. All listings are accurate as of press, but please do keep in mind that due to the always changing pandemic, all venues and showtimes are subject to changes, postponements and cancellations. Each venue listed may have its own safety precautions that you will need to adhere to. We have included contact information and website addresses within the listings and encourage you to review those safety measures before purchasing tickets and heading to the venue. Finally, on with the show!

Made up entirely of woodblock prints created in the ukiyo-e style, this exhibition highlights female characters in literature, kabuki theatre, and poetry; the courtesans and geisha of the Yoshiwara district; and wives and mothers from different social classes performing the duties of their station, in order to gain some insight into the lives of women in pre-modern Japan.

NURSE BLAKE
B
lake Lynch, better known as Nurse Blake, is a registered nurse who has found social media fame over the last few years. Since 2017, when Lynch uploaded his first viral video, he has amassed 2.5 million followers across his social media and has almost 7 million likes on TikTok. The Orlando native also happens to be a University of Central Florida alumnus where he graduated with a nursing degree. Along with some help, Lynch founded the Banned4Life campaign, which fought the FDA on their policies regarding gay men who wanted to donate blood. In 2021, he founded NurseCon, an organization focused on caring for nurses and nursing students. This fall, the 30-year-old, openly gay nurse/comedian is hitting the road with his tour “Nurse Blake: The PTO Comedy Tour,” a comedy event that “celebrates the hard work of healthcare providers.” According to a press release, his shows provide laughter and inspiration. His nursing career lasted seven years where he worked in a number of nursing roles at Level 1 Trauma centers around the country. Along with the month-long tour, Lynch will be traveling with 4,000 other nurses and nursing students on the NurseCon at Sea cruise to the Caribbean April 25-29, 2022 where they have a chance to learn more about the profession and about Nurse Blake himself. ENRIQUE IGLESIAS AND RICKY MARTIN
L
atin music superstars Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin had their fans ecstatic when they announced in March 2020 that they would be heading on the road to tour together. That excitement died off however after COVID-19 hit. But the duo were not going to disappoint their fans and announced the tour was being rescheduled and will now hit the road with stops in both the U.S. and Canada this fall, along with special guest Sebastian Yatra. The tour, which will consist of 25 shows in 21 cities, will begin Sept. 3 in Phoenix and wrap up in Orlando Oct. 30 at the Amway Center. “To say we are going on tour has lifted all of our spirits after the profoundly difficult year the world has gone through and still is,” Martin said. “Myself and my entire crew are very excited to bring our best live show safely all over the U.S. and Canada, and let the music bring the healing power and happiness that we all need.” For Yatra, he said he’s just happy to perform alongside a few of the performers he grew up watching. “If I didn’t have the chance to be on stage, I would buy a ticket to see you,” Yatra told his new tour mates. “I visualized this in my life. They are two of my biggest idols.”

T
he Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) St. Petersburg is known for its eclectic collection, treasures covering almost 5,000 years of civilization. It includes more than 16,000 photographic items. That collection inspired “From Margins to Mainstays,” featuring 35 artists and their work from eras past and present. The exhibit “illustrates how the canon of photography has evolved since the medium first began appearing in museums in the 1940s, with particular emphasis on rectifying the small percentage of women and artists of color historically acquired by and displayed in public collections.” Those featured were marginalized because of their race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity or nationality. LGBTQ photographers include Shen Wei, Wilhelm von Gloeden, Minor White, Robert Mapplethorpe, Richard Avedon, Laura Gilpin, Berenice Abbott and Ruth Bernhard. Subjects include Margrethe Mather and Frida Kahlo. “Once perceived as marginal to the history of photography, these artists and works are now mainstays,” MFA notes. “Their acceptance has occurred gradually since the 1960s as scholars and curators – who themselves are increasingly more diverse – have revised histories and expanded the field.”

BUECHNER AT THE FLORIDA ORCHESTRA
T
he Florida Orchestra has worked to inspire audiences in Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Tampa for decades, offering live symphonies celebrating the human spirit throughout the tri-city area. Musical Director Michael Francis welcomes audiences back this year to continue that tradition. “I cannot wait to bring back the glorious power of a symphony at full force,” the maestro says. “Experiencing such extraordinary music together makes us stronger as we move forward with optimism and hope.” The institution’s 2021-22 season, its 54th, boasts masterpieces, a pops series and soloists. The lineup includes Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet” with Gershwin’s “Piano Concerto in F,” performed by world-renowned pianist Sara Davis Buechner. “As a proud representative of the T in LGBTQ,” the transgender pianist has noted, “it is both my obligation and my privilege to be out and proud, to be a spokesperson for transgender rights, and hopefully to stand with my trans-brothers and sisters in unity, continuing the good and necessary fight for full civil rights for all.” JAN. 8, THE MAHAFFEY THEATER, ST. he Harvey Milk Festival has been entertaining audiences for more than a decade. Now its in-person festivities are back and bigger than ever, merging this year with its Fabulous Independent Film Festival (Fabulous IFF) for a two-week celebration. HMF honors the legacy of politician Harvey Milk by fostering the arts for change. Performers seek to empower others to contribute to the community. “Each day of our festival will have a different event that fosters LGBTQ+ artists in a multitude of mediums like dance, drag, art, film and music,” HMF promises. Opening night begins with an art installation and the first week continues with dance-focused programming and a festival dedicated to music and the arts before turning to film. For its combined 11th outing, the Fabulous IFF will offer “the best in LGBTQ+ cinema.” Double features will be held each night and include a drive-in experience and virtual offering. Organizers note that the “Harvey Milk Festival is evolving and continuing to grow” and invite the community to grow with it in 2021. More information about the acts, venues and the festival’s year-round initiatives can be found at HarveyMilkFestival.org.
