picked the tree out on my dad’s birthday, Dec. 6. When we got home us kids would gather in the living room as dad dragged it in calling to us kids in a funny accent. “Children, children! Look what I brought home,” he would shout coming in the front door, Santa hat flopping around as he tried to handle the tree. Ma would be in front of him, camcorder in hand — well, more like slung over her shoulder as camcorders were kind of bulky in those days — getting the entire thing on tape as she threw fake snow in the air. 020 has been a difficult year, to say the least. It is in those difficult times that it becomes so important to reach out and check in on your friends and family, offer a kind smile to a stranger and try to hold onto those traditions that you revisit every year during the holidays. Growing up, my family celebrated Christmas

are for Christmas day.” It was a back and forth that happened every year even though we knew he would relent. He started the evening with a “no,” softened into an “I’ll think about it” and finally into a “fine, but just one.” We’d run for the tree asking which one as our parents would consult each other about which package would be a fine Christmas Eve gift for the kids to tear into. My favorite of the holiday traditions was bringing the Christmas tree home. We had
undecorated evergreen and tell us a Christmas story. The story changed every year, but would always be a holiday classic — such as “A Christmas Carol” or “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” — but with us kids and other family members in starring roles. Then we would watch as Ma created one of the most beautiful Christmas trees any of us had ever seen, finishing it off with the angel on top as carols played in the background. It was all very Norman Rockwell. This is the first holiday season that me and my family will celebrate since my dad passed away earlier this year. We plan to gather up at my sister’s home in North Dakota, share some stories like the one above with new members of the family — whether born into or accepted in — and make some memories and create new traditions. That’s what we hope to help you do with our latest Holiday Guide. In these pages, we chat with Sean Reynolds-Steele of Holiday Visions to get some fresh and fun ideas on how you can decorate for the holidays. We also take a look at some LGBTQinclusive holiday films you and your family can enjoy and add to your annual watch list, including a look at Lifetime and Hallmark Channel’s very first gay-themed Christmas films. Finally, we continue on our own Watermark tradition of asking Santa for gifts with our annual “In Our Box, In Our Socks” list. We bring you all of this and more with the very special seasonal help of full-time Santa Nicholas Cardello and the beautiful PheYonce Montrese. Learn more about these two fabulous folks at SantaNick.com and Facebook.com/PheYonce.Montrese. However you and yours choose to celebrate this festive season we here at Watermark wish you a safe and happy holidays and a fantastic new year!

Continued from pg.9 maintaining the “wonder” in “Christmas Wonderland.” He met the task with ease, assisting customers searching for the perfect wreaths, garlands and more. “I take all my artistic talent and throw it into Christmas,” he explains. “I love Christmas. “It’s always been my favorite holiday,” he continues. “My mom gave me a saying, ‘a great man is he who never loses the heart of a child,’ and I live my life by that.” He’s helped customers do it as well. “Over the years people have come into the store, seen what I’ve designed and wanted the finished product for their own homes,” Reynolds-Steele explains. “I take their visions and recreate them with my little twist.” Over the years, that assistance evolved into Holiday Visions, the interior design business he created with the blessing of Robert’s. “The owners are really appreciative of my talents,” he says. “If a customer wants a custom job done, they buy the merchandise there and I design for them off-premises. It’s really taken off.” Holiday Visions has a number of recurring clients, with more requests for his seasonal services each year. His design offerings have ranged from small to large, from single wreaths to entire homes adorned in garland, ribbon and more, seen on p. 9 and above. Reynolds-Steele begins with a client consultation, discussing any design aesthetics and obtaining necessary measurements. From there, he’ll either prepare the merchandise in his own home or in theirs, depending on the size of the job and client preference. Then he completes the project.
Ahead of this year’s holiday season, Reynolds-Steele shared a number of helpful hints for Watermark readers, stressing that clean and simple is always a winning combination. “When you’re buying a tree, make sure to measure the width of the area where you plan to put it, not just the height,” he says. “Then when you’re putting lights on it, don’t wrap them too tightly.” The same goes for any wreaths or garland, the festive decor he always recommends buying extra of to account for the material’s swag. Prior to installation and after measurements are complete, multiply the amount needed by an additional 1.5 feet. More is always best for ribbon as well,

Ever the matchmaker, Kate arranges for school friend and secret crush played by Lewis’ real-life husband, Blake Lee — who has recently returned after a successful stint in Silicon Valley.
