It offers free delivery to many parts of West Austin. Alex and Shawn Kombogiannis own the store. Hold The NOTE Caritas Event Inspires Hope for a Stronger Community

An evening thundershower hardly dampened the community spirit and generosity of the people gathered for Caritas of Austin’s 11th Annual Words of Hope dinner at the JW Marriott on September 20th. Some 550 guests attended the event at which Tom and Lynn Meredith received the Harvey Penick Award for Excellence in the Game of Life, which Caritas has awarded each year starting in 1992 to gold legend Penick himself. The honorees are those people who demonstrate “a lifetime 16 WATERWAYS | Winter 2018

of excellence in their field of endeavor and are known as community leaders, mentors, stewards of community trust and champions of the greater good.” The Merediths moved from California to Austin the same year the first year the award was given, when Tom accepted the position of chief financial officer at Dell. Since then the couple has worked with a number of groups in Austin to make their community a welcoming, vibrant place for all. In both their remarks, the Merediths each emphasized >

the need to come together to strengthen a community. Lynn used the analogy of staggered breathing, the choir technique in which each singer takes a breath at staggered times while the others continue to hold the long note so that the music is uninterrupted. “It is the strength of the whole that allows the note to be carried forth,” she said. For the couple Austin is “a great choir joining together to hold notes for each other to make this the most impossibly good place for a person to live and to thrive and to give back.” Another featured speaker was Sandy Wolff, one of the organization’s clients who exemplifies its work. Thanks to Caritas, as she explained, at age 58 “for first time ever in my life, I have a home of my own, a place to feel safe and secure, especially from the demons of my past.” She has a job she loves is taking college courses. “In all actuality the list of successes from homelessness to becoming a productive member of society grows each and every day for me.” Wolff closed by encouraging attendees to “dig deep” to help Caritas to continue to turn homelessness “from scary nights on the streets, despair and unforgivable acts to success stories for families and individuals who need to live a better life and succeed off the streets.”

18 WATERWAYS | Winter 2018

And dig deep they did. After the live auction and Fund the Mission onsite donation drive led by the enthusiastic cowboys of Heath Hale Auctioneers, Caritas of Austin had raised nearly $200,000, double the total it aimed to raise. Combined with other monies raised in advance of the event, the organization raised nearly $500,000. The evening concluded with Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith on stage with long-time local news anchor Judy Maggio to answer questions about his life, his career and his own philanthropic work. He touched on how football showed him a world of opportunities outside his childhood in the projects of Pensacola, FL, and his drive in later years to offer “not a handout but a hand up.” “I’m a firm believer that God touched each and every one of us with a measure of talent, and we have to find out what that talent is and we have to maximize every moment of our lives,” said Smith. He added the importance of sharing one’s talent to inspire and enable others to do the same. “We have to inspire others through our lives.” His words of hope and the words of hope offered by the other speakers that night will continue to drive Caritas of Austin’s mission to end homelessness in the Austin community, not simply manage it.

Darrell K Royal is synonymous with football in Texas because of his tenacity on and off the field. The research fund that bears his name shares this same tenacity in the drive to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. On September 21st, the Darrell K Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer’s Disease held its annual 4th & Goal Gala at the Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater venue. This year’s top-billed entertainment was provided by Charles “Chip” Esten, Chris Carmack and Jonathan Jackson, the singing stars of the TV show Nashville, which aired on ABC from 2012 to 2016 and then for two more years on CMT. Other highlights of the gala included a silent auction as well as a lively live auction conducted by the legendary cowboy hat-wearing bid wranglers of Heath Hale Auctioneers. Of course, UT alumnus extraordinaire Matthew McConaughey was on hand to regale the audience with tales of Coach Royal’s unique sense of humor and to honor his enduring legacy not only at the university but far and wide. Just as he has motivated a number of UT players over the years, McConaughey inspired attendees with his remarks. The event raised more than $1 million. Grants from the DKR Fund financially support research not only to better understand and hopefully one day cure Alzheimer’s disease but also dementia, traumatic brain injury and neurological injuries. The foundation also funds caregiving support, education and awareness in the name of Edith Royal, Coach Royal’s wife.

Go, Fight, Win Celebrating Life Won Back from Breast Cancer

As September drew to a close, some 720 breast cancer survivors and their families, friends and supporters joined with members of the Austin alumnae chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha and other invited guests to celebrate life. The 2018 Celebration of Suzanne Erickson, Armondo Zambrano, Lauren Petrowski

Life Luncheon took place at the Fairmont Austin hotel downtown. The annual luncheon marked its 20th anniversary, and the event once again served as a fundraiser for the Seton Breast Care Center (SBCC), a comprehensive facility at Seton Medical Center Austin. It offers affordable, accessible state-of-theart imaging technology along with numerous patient support services. Since opening in February 2014, SBCC has cared for more than 8,500 patients, with more than 30 percent of services provided to patients without insurance. Kendra Scott served as emcee

I Am Enough

The Kindness Campaign Arms Kids with Self-Acceptance, Empathy

The Kindness Campaign (TKC) aims to instill in students as early as prekindergarten a powerful force for positive change: intentional acts of kindness. Now present in all 82 Austin Independent School District elementary schools, the organization’s curriculum helps children identify their emotions, develop empathy and build their sense of self-worth, all to promote “a kinder pattern of behavior” to reduce bullying. TKC was born out of tragedy. Upon learning that a friend’s 12-year-old daughter had taken her own life in response to bullying, founder Andra Liemandt in 2015 began creating a journal and a character—Enoughie Buddy—to teach her daughters about emotional awareness, empathy and kindness and because she felt compelled to do something positive. The project gained momentum, and the organization debuted its social-emotional learning curriculum in five AISD elementary schools during the 2015-2016 school year. The lesson plans, coloring books and journals build on TKC’s four essential pillars of learning: self-image, emotional awareness, empathy and community. Mascot

24 WATERWAYS | Winter 2018

Enoughie helps students engage with the materials and one another to build their kindness toolkits. To further its work, the organization holds KINDNESSPALOOZA events to bring Enoughie Buddy as well as the Magic Mirror self-affirmation experience to even more children and adults. These events have taken place at South by Southwest 2018, the Hill Country Galleria and Barton Creek Square. TKC has even made inroads to adult education. It has partnered with Paul Mitchell Schools to roll out its Corporate Kindness program in the more than 100 Paul Mitchell Schools across the U.S. The Kindness Campaign has received funding and accolades from several organizations, including Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation. Liemandt herself was recognized in 2018 by Austin Woman with a Woman’s Way Business Award in the Social Impact category. Learn more about The Kindness Campaign at tkckindness.org.

PROFILE Coultress O’Neill offers contemporary attire and accessories and a healthy dose of retail therapy

Style Confidence Stephanie Coultress O’Neill knows all about retail therapy—as well as retail and therapy. Before she opened Estilo Boutique in 2005, the owner pursued one of her passions and earned her master’s degree in psychology from The University of Texas and then operated her own child and family therapy private practice. After a while she decided to follow her other passion: fashion. Coultress O’Neill aims to offer customers not only carefully curated contemporary women’s clothing and accessories but also the opportunity to boost their confidence and sense of style. The entrepreneuse here offers Waterways readers her insights on holiday style and navigating ever-changing fashion trends.

Q. What guidance can you offer for pairing patterns and prints successfully? Take a component of each pattern, but don’t overdo it. For example, take a brown-and-black plaid pant and pair it with a brown-and-black floral. Don’t throw too many clashing elements together, such as different patterns and different colors. Have a component that brings it all together as well, such as a solid shoe and/or bag.

Q. What are your favorite ways to ensure your LBD stands apart from all the others at holiday events? Accessories are essential to help your LBD stand out. A great statement necklace, earrings or a cuff can elevate your dress to the next level.

Q. What one accessory is the best to splurge on? The accessory that you cannot live without. When you see that gorgeous statement piece that speaks to you, you should buy it. Accessories can be very personal, so when you have to have it…get it.

Q. What are the trends this year for holiday looks? How do you recommend incorporating them into one’s own personal style? Lace is a fun, romantic trend for the holidays and can make any outfit feel very festive and fun. Velvet is another great trend that has become a staple for the holiday season. Make the trend be a component of your outfit and not the whole look. For example, wear just a velvet top or a velvet shoe.

Q. How would you describe your own style? How has it evolved? I love to mix a little edgy and fun with classic. I love to be fashion forward while still being functional. As I have become a mom of two little ones, my style has definitely become more functional but yet still fashionable. I have to be able to chase after a 4-year-old but look stylish while doing it! Estilo Boutique is located in Tarrytown’s Casis Village, 2727 Exposition Blvd, Suite 121, and online at estiloboutique.com.

Glamour-eyes Your Holidays with Help from Adore Artist Cox

Jentry Kelley Cosmetics,

‘Tis the season to dress up for holiday events, and your makeup should be just as haute as your holiday couture. Shirley Cox, lead makeup artist at Adore Makeup Boutique and Salon, explains how to make your season bright. To achieve a smoky eye more smoldering than a Yule log, Cox starts with a simple dusting of a dark eyeshadow, such as French Roast, on the lower lid with a metallic taupe, such as Doe Eyes, on top. For the crease she likes a matte neutral such as Arabian Camel to add a depth. Finish with some Mocha Madness in the outer corner and under the eye. Since your eyes bring the drama, she encourages a downplayed lip. Line with Smore lip liner, and then fill with Nude You Didn’t lipstick topped with Send Me Nudes gloss. Prefer to sparkle? Cox has you covered. Start with Moon Dust cream eyeshadow all over, then add Salted Caramel on

the lids with some matte suede Sweet Latte in the crease. Come back over the top with high-impact shadows Au Miel and Blush and Bashful for shimmer. A touch of Creme Brûlée pearlescent shimmer under the eye and in the inner corner bring a twinkle that rivals Santa’s scintillating peepers. For the lips, she recommends Maraschino lip liner paired with Marilyn Monrose blood-red lipstick. Since the eyes have sheen, Cox foregoes lip gloss.

Set a Stylish Table Fit for Holiday Entertaining

Hosts and guests shouldn’t be the only dressed-up attendees at a holiday dinner party. A table decorated to celebrate the magic of the holiday season adds to the special feel of the event. A festive table can also spark conversation and help make a meal enjoyed with family or friends all the more memorable. Says Meredith Owen of Meredith Owen Interiors, “We love tailoring each of our holiday designs to reflect the family that resides inside.” Let these tablescapes inspire your next holiday gathering.

PROFILE Q. How do you best update a look when the tableware or silverware is an older pattern that was in style 10, 20 or 30 years ago that isn’t necessarily a classic? I always love mixing old with the new. Using an older place setting but updating the placemats and napkin rings is an easy way to marry styles together without blowing your budget on all new place settings. I also suggest having a very simple set of dinnerware on hand if you are accustomed to entertaining because it’s much easier to dress up and dress down the table depending on the event you are hosting. Q. What are your favorite ways to add pops of color to a table? My favorite ways to add a pop of color are with table linens and floral arrangements. Napkins

Q. If you’re hosting multiple dinners, what can you do to ensure each event has a unique look but doesn’t require a whole table makeover each time? Swap out your flowers, napkins, napkin rings and placemats or table runners. That’s a really easy way to create an entirely different look without a lot of work.

The Splendid Table Owen Designs Sensory Feasts, No Kitchen Required Meredith Owen believes a well-designed space can transform a person’s life, so a well-designed table surely can transform and elevate a meal to an incredible sensory experience. From a holiday table to a whole home makeover, she draws on more than a decade of interior design experience to blend beauty and functionality in all her work. The Meredith Owen Interiors proprietress shares how she approaches the mundane task of setting a table to make it a magical holiday memory. Q. When you begin designing a tablescape, do you start with a theme or a color scheme? Do you build around a key piece of the tableware, such as the plate pattern or the antique candelabrum that’s to be the centerpiece? I typically begin a tablescape design with a theme, depending on the holiday or event I’m hosting. Once the theme is selected, I gather anything I have from my home to start building the look I want and purchase pieces to fill in after that.

36 WATERWAYS | Winter 2018

Q. What are some of the hot holiday colors this year? What are your tips for using them without looking too trendy? We’re seeing a ton of matte brass accents throughout the accessory market right now. Incorporating some brass accents into your table décor is a great way to have an updated tablescape. Don’t be afraid to mix metallic accents. Silvers and golds play beautifully together. The color we are seeing at the moment that will carry on through the holidays is emerald green. This color is being used in all aspects of design right now, and adding a dose of it to

Intelligent DESIGN Meredith Ellis offers her insights on designing a stylish, comfortable home

MEREDITH ELLIS is an Austin-based interior designer who’s making her mark on traditional home design. She offers her interior design services through Meredith Ellis Design, and her JAMES Showroom on West Sixth offers a sumptuous selection of fabrics, wallpapers, rugs, furniture and more. In 2016 Traditional Home magazine named her one of the top 10 up-and-coming new traditional designers, and in June 2018 she collaborated with Southern Living, architect Chris Sanders of Sanders Architecture and David Wilkes Builders on the 2018 Idea House in Austin’s Northwest Hills neighborhood. 44 WATERWAYS | Winter 2018

Ellis kindly shares here with Waterways readers how she approaches her work, decorating for the holidays and other design dilemmas.

A DESIGNER’S KNOW-HOW Q. What’s your design philosophy? Decorate for the way you live, live with the things you love, and your house will always be a home.

Q. What inspires you when decorating a room? From where do you draw inspiration? My first step is getting to know the clients— who they are, how they live and what they desire for their home. The landscape, city, climate and style of home all factor into the look I’ll create. I also find inspiration from my clients themselves. I love when they come to the table with things that are important to them, whether it’s a great piece of art or pretty antiques that are in their family that they want to incorporate into their new home. It all helps start a vision! Outside of that, I find inspiration everywhere: travel, architecture, landscapes, art, hotels and books. My showroom, JAMES, is filled with inspiration as well. I feel so lucky to be able to walk amongst walls of hanging artisanal textiles every day and see something new. I’ll catch a glimpse of a fabric and think, Wow, wouldn’t that look pretty with peacock blue walls, or Doesn’t this look great with that fabric!

Q. What are some tips for mixing and matching patterns for those of us who have little instinct for it? Nothing bores me more than a plain white sofa. It’s not that I don’t like white. Sure, it looks great in a photograph, but in a room I want to see something more. Pattern doesn’t have to always mean lots of color. It can be tonal as well. I’ll usually start with one larger-scale print and go from there. It helps set the color palette. Layering in fabrics that are softer in color helps too. Nothing too bold, too sharp or too loud as you will tire of that over time.

Q. How can you determine if you’re on the verge of going overboard with decorative pieces? Is there such thing as too much? Just kidding! I love layers but that’s not to be confused with clutter. I like homes that feel like they have evolved with time. When I decorate >

Ellis teamed with David Wilkes (l) and Chris Sanders (r) for a down-to-the-studs renovation of a 1988 home in Northwest Hills. Through the magic of remodeling and interior design, the dining room (top), master bedroom (above left), mud room (above right) and other spaces are more spacious and gracious. The sunroom (opposite page) lets homeowners enjoy the sun without feeling the heat.

Winter 2018 | WATERWAYS 45

I think through the process start to finish, and how that home would look when someone really lives there on its best day. Books arranged on a shelf not like a decorator came in arranged it but like it was done by an avid reader. Bedside tables that are utilized and not just for show—a stack of books, a lamp, a tray for jewelry or knick-knacks, a pretty water carafe and a vase for flowers. It has to make sense. If it doesn’t it’s just fluff.

Q. How often should you update decor? If you are doing it right, not that often! That’s why I’m a big advocate of classic design. It never goes out of style. Following trends is a surefire way to keep us designers in business forever, however! I do say, though, your large items—sofas, rugs, curtains—should be like dressing. Those are the items to really invest in and be methodical about ordering. Your accessories are your handbags and shoes. You can constantly change them seasonally or every so often to make things feel fresh.

GRACEFUL HOLIDAY DECORATING Q. What are some common pitfalls you see in holiday decorating?

Q. Do you have any special ornaments or keepsakes you and your family look forward to putting on display during the holidays?

The family room, a nautical-accented bedroom and the back porch exude stylish comfort.

Growing up I always loved my mother’s Christmas stocking that her mother made her. It was oversized with large red sequins and thoughtful adornments of little dolls and other things that were special to my mother. I asked my mom if she would do the same thing for my children. It took her about six years, but she made them for my whole family. We each have one in a different color, and there are special details that are unique to each of the four of us.

THE TAKEAWAY Q. What’s your best piece of decorating advice? Always incorporate at least one antique into a room. It gives the room authenticity. 46 WATERWAYS | Winter 2018

Using too many store-bought Christmas decorations. Look beyond the obvious. Incorporate fruit such as pears or pretty leafy orange tree branches. Mix greenery such as holly, eucalyptus or magnolia branches with something unique to your area, such as old bleached deer antlers or pretty gardenia flowers.

11 Tons of Pink Himalayan Salt!

Here at the Austin Salt Cave, we do what’s called Halotherapy. During our 45-minuteHalotherapy sessions, we’re pumping salt infused air into the salt room. The whole time you’re breathing in minuscule salt particles, coating the entirety of your respiratory tract as well as getting it on your skin. The salt then draws moisture to it, reducing inflammation in the respiratory tract and on the skin. Extra fluid pulled into the lungs thins out mucus, allowing it to be more easily expelled. On top of all that, salt is antimicrobial! We are located behind The Grove in Lakeway. 2951 RANCH ROAD 620 S SUITE 102, LAKEWAY, TX 78738 • (512) 838-6545 • AUSTINSALTCAVE.COM

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Healthy Holidays The holiday season is upon us once again. With it typically comes changes in schedules and routines as food-laden parties, dinners and other celebrations fill up the calendar and gift-shopping, decorating and other tasks claim more of our time. All the fun and festivities and food can make maintaining health and wellness goals challenging, but these tips can help you stay on track and enjoy the holidays.

Mindful Eating “Food is fuel,” so be aware of what you are feeding your body throughout the day. If you’re concerned about overindulging, eat regular, healthful meals and snacks every three to four hours to help you feel less hungry before that big family dinner or holiday office party. Eating a healthful snack right before can also lessen the chance you’ll fill up on appetizers or hors d’oeuvres. If you’re attending a buffet-style meal, choose a

smaller plate to help keep your portions in check. Select first nutrient-rich and high-fiber foods, such as lean protein and vegetables, to help you feel full longer. Be mindful of the calories you’re drinking too. Holiday beverages such as eggnog and hot chocolate as well as cocktails and elaborate coffees can pack a high-calorie punch with little nutritional value. Focus on drinking water before, during and after the meal and imbibe selectively. That way you’ll stay hydrated and avoid those empty calories.

Plan Ahead Heading out for a full day of holiday fun? Bring along nutritional snacks and water or even a sack lunch so you don’t find yourself opting for less-healthful convenience food because you’re depleted and dehydrated. Invited to a potluck? Ingredient swaps can make favorite recipes healthier and still tasty. For example, use plain Greek

When dining out, look up the restaurant’s menu online and pick a healthy meal option in advance. Doing so saves you stress when it’s time to place your order. Another option for smarter restaurant dining: Share your meal with a companion, or ask for a to-go box when the food arrives. Too-large restaurant portions are common, so by sharing an entree or boxing up part of it before eating, you won’t be consuming too much in one sitting.

portunity for family and friends to stay active together. The Thundercloud Subs Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning, for example, is popular for working up the Thanksgiving appetite. You might start a new holiday tradition by taking part. Staying active throughout the holidays can also help reduce stress that frequently accompanies this joyful but busy time of the year—that same stress that spurs some of us to eat or drink more or to make not-so-healthful food choices. Even if you don’t have a regular workout routine currently, it’s not too late to start one. No need to wait until the new year!

Keep Moving

Have Fun

Many fitness facilities do their best keep their regular hours and class schedules during the holidays. In fact, to encourage attendance some allow members to bring guests for complimentary workouts or extend childcare hours. What a great way for you to keep motivated! Finally, enjoy yourself! Although life can get a little hectic during the holidays, make time to relax, enjoy being with your loved ones and create lasting memories. If you miss a few workouts or revel in a larger meal here and there, that’s OK. Don’t give up your goals, and get back on track as soon as you can. DANCE INSTITUTE STUDENT IMPRESSES AT KAIROS DANCE INTENSIVE

Over the summer Dance Institute student Nick Schroeder took one grand jeté closer to achieve his commercial dance career goals. In July 2018 while attending the Kairos Pro Dance Prep Intensive in Los Angeles, the high school junior won a

$20,000 college scholarship to Studio School, which offers BFA programs in art, acting, film, commercial dance, musical theatre and entrepreneurship in Los Angeles. Schroeder was the sole recipient of this scholarship. He won it for his musicality, the diversity of

his dance styles and his ability to quickly master new choreography, all which he demonstrated during the dance intensive. The Kairos Pro Dance Prep Intensive is an invitation-only training program that specializes in commercial dance. It offers attendees more than a week’s worth of training with some of the most famous choreographers and agents in North America. In addition to the dance training, participants can take part in commercial photo and video shoots at a Hollywood studio. Schroeder began training at Dance Institute in 2010

at age 9. He has been a member of Dance Institute’s Performance Academy competitive dance team for eight years. Said Dance Institute Director Linda Holland, “Nick started out as a hip hopper and has expanded his repertoire to include classical ballet, jazz, contemporary, ballroom and tap. In fact, Nick was recognized as one of the top 10 male dancers last year at the New York City Dance Alliance (NYCDA) national competition in New York City and has had considerable success at the Youth America Grand Prix in classical ballet and contemporary dance categories. “Nick aspires to work professionally in commercial dance. We are very proud of Nick for receiving this scholarship at a college that is very well suited to his talents.”
