CONTACT US TODAY
On behalf of The Inland Waterways Association (IWA), I would like to wish you a very warm welcome to IWA’s Canalway Cavalcade. Our event showcases all that is best about our inland waterways and provides a spectacular sight here at Brownings Pool in Little Venice. It saddens me to say that our waterways are currently at risk due to lack of adequate ongoing funding.
IWA has launched the Protect our Waterways campaign. To find out more details please visit our marquee and talk to one of our many volunteers who have been making this fantastic event happen for 40 years. Our volunteers will let you know how to support this important campaign and how to become an IWA member.
As part of their plans to restore nature the government wants everyone to live within 15 minutes’ walk of a green space or water. Our rivers and canals provide both green spaces and water and are therefore a fantastic way of delivering this plan. A perfect justification for both national and local government to increase the relatively small amount of investment they currently make. How sad that we are seeing investment reduced in both monetary and real terms and this is putting our waterways at risk.
As the only independent national charity campaigning for Britain’s Canals and Rivers we have produced a report “Waterways for Today” which you can find on our website. This shows the benefits the waterways provide including economic, health and environmental.
Many lessons have been learned from the difficult days in the 1950s and ‘60s, when determined IWA volunteers fought tooth and nail against the official policy at the time of closing down, selling off and building over
our historic canals. Many villages, towns and cities, parts of London and Birmingham among them, have been regenerated and reinvigorated around their waterways. If adequate funding is not available our waterways will go into decline again and the benefits they provide will be significantly reduced or even totally lost.
Enjoy Cavalcade and please support the Protect our Waterways campaign.
Finally I would like to say a very big thank you to all the volunteers who continue to make Cavalcade such a success and an important event for the local community
The IWA Canalway Cavalcade team and I are delighted to welcome everyone to this year’s event, marking the 40th anniversary of our festival. A landmark milestone of raising money and awareness for the Inland Waterways Association since 1983.
Each year our volunteers put around 10,000 hours of time into the organisation and planning of the festival. A huge undertaking that comes from dedication of those from all walks of life, united by the passion for supporting and maintaining the waterways around us. 2023 marks a significant year for
the waterways, and an uncertain future, so it’s important we continue to do all we can to maintain this unique legacy for future generations.
Our theme for 2023 is ‘40 years of IWA Canalway Cavalcade’ and we’ve encouraged entrants to the pageant to dress in celebration of this momentous occasion. So, get involved in any way you can and make sure to share your photographs over the festival on social media using the hashtag #canalwaycavalcade

Rembrandt Gardens
Throughout the weekend there will be activities for children to enjoy in the gardens – Face Painting, Bubble of Fun, Punch & Judy, Storytime with Marisa Knight on Saturday and Sunday and the Teddy Bears’ Picnic at 3pm on Sunday afternoon. Marisa will be reading from her books about Monty and Dart - Montgomery and Dartington –who live on Blomfield Road, overlooking the pool of Little Venice. Alarum Theatre Company
As a theatre company, Alarum celebrates real life stories of women on the canals and is passionate about restoring women’s voices to their rightful place in history. They achieve this through thoroughly researched and accurately presented performances, publications, and audio recordings. They bring entertaining, informative and affordable performances to venues around the waterways. 2023 sees them branching out to work with the village and canal communities of Braunston to explore the 1920s - including the famous Boatmen’s Strike of 1923!

Church Army
Many visitors to our IWA Canalway Cavalcade weekend over the years have enjoyed meeting Graham Nunn, who led the Church Army team for 30 years, but who very sadly died in 2021. This year we will not have any Church Army presence but we look forward to welcoming them back in 2024.
Electric Barge
Unfortunately, the Electric Barge will not be putting on any children’s activities this year but we hope they will be able to join us again in 2024.
Pirate Castle
The Pirate Castle is a community boating charity located a stone’s throw from Camden Lock and Camden Market. This weekend they will be putting on a display in the pool at 12.15 before the opening ceremony on the Saturday, with the Youth Club demonstrating their skills and letting us see what can be done in kayaks; and the ‘Upper Deckers’, aged 50+, showcasing their group and demonstrating the Pirates encourage anybody from 8+ onto the water. Throughout the weekend there will be activities on and around ‘Pirate Prince’, moored by the Paddington Towpath. On Saturday and Sunday there will be ‘Come and Try’ kayaking sessions and throughout the weekend they will have Arts and Crafts sessions on board ‘Pirate Prince’.
Royal National Lifeboat Institution
There have been Lifeboats stationed around the coast of Britain for nearly 200 years. Many of you will have seen the programme ‘Saving Lives at Sea’ on television. Last year we celebrated having Lifeboats on the River Thames for 20 years. These are at Teddington, Chiswick, Tower and Gravesend and came about as a result of the Marchioness enquiry. Members of the crew and other volunteers will be here on the Paddington Towpath to teach children and adults about water safety including correct use of throw lines and lifejackets. They will also be running a Lifejacket ‘clinic’ on Sunday where you can bring your lifejackets to be checked. Replacement cylinders and activators will be available on sale. There will be children’s educational activities, meeting Stormy Stan and dressing up as a Lifeboat Crew member.
Teddy Bears’ Picnic
All Teddy Bears are welcome to come for a picnic at 3pm on Sunday. We will be colouring bear pictures and listening to stories as well as having our picnic.
The Puppet Theatre Barge
The Puppet Barge is located on the north side of The Pool, access is from Blomfield Road. This year’s programme is “The Blue Pool of Questions” a brand new production for all ages fusing puppetry, storytelling and live music. The performance combines Arabic and English storytelling with humour and imagination to tell the tale of a man who asks too many questions.
Performed using tabletop puppetry and the rarely seen black light theatre technique. Inspired by two Palestinian short stories by Maya Abu Al-Hayat and Yara Bamieh. Created for the Puppet Theatre Barge by Osama Al Azza and Stan Middleton.
Suitable for ages 4+
Duration: 50 min, no interval.
Scan the QR code to book your tickets now. Late comers will not be admitted to the show.

An Exhibition of Outstanding Work from Local Schools.
Cavalcade works with local Westminster Schools to stimulate an interest in their local waterways. Pupils from Westminster Academy, St Mary Magdalene Church of England Primary School, Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee School and The Children’s University of Westminster showcase their written and Art work during Cavalcade. The students are aged from 4 - 16 and are from both mainstream and special schools. The Schools all welcome the opportunity for their

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF CANALWAY
This year we’re celebrating 40 years of Canalway Cavalcade! The origin of the name has two sources: The Canal Way project began in the 1970s, with many works and improvements made during the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977, which is why the symbol is present on the many Canal Way plaques that are still visible around London's Canal network. The Silver Jubilee Walk and the Canal Way were a combined effort at creating a network of walking routes in the capital. Local councils undertook work to bring London's canals and their towpaths up to Canal Way standards.
The first Cavalcade (a procession or pageant – in this case, of boats) was arranged to traverse north east to west London to illustrate the importance of the continued use of the canal. Hard to believe that back then canal towpaths had only recently been opened for public use. It was organised so that all the mayors from the boroughs east and west of Little Venice, through which the Regent’s and Grand Union Canals run, were involved. Two flotillas converged at Little Venice, the junction of the Paddington Arm of the Grand Union and the Regent’s Canals –
CAVALCADE
a significant and historic part of the canal network. This was a very large undertaking because mayors were not supposed to go through one another’s’ areas and needed special permission - and so many boroughs had waterways going through them. These days we only manage one Mayor, the Lord Mayor of Westminster, who arrives aboard Laburnum Boat Club's Lady Mildmay, with her entourage and VIPs from IWA and supporters and stakeholders of Canalway Cavalcade.
There have been many themes over the years and many interesting and amusing efforts by the attending boaters to interpret them, as you can see from the accompanying photos.
We hope you’ll celebrate with us the joy that waterways can bring to everyone in so many ways and that you will support Inland Waterways Association’s campaign to Protect Our Waterways, so that we can continue to enjoy them well into the future.
We’re the charity making life better by water
Some 250 years ago, great engineers achieved feats never seen before – taking water up hills, across valleys and powering the industrial age. And today our canals are busier than ever.
Keeping those 2,000 miles of waterways, 2,980 bridges, 1,580 locks and 335 aqueducts open to navigation is central to our work. But there’s more to the Canal & River Trust than that. Meet some of the people making everyone’s life better by water...
Ranger: Jamal
Jones-ThomasFundraiser: Linzi
MacdonaldI’m a volunteer with Canal & River Trust. Volunteering is crucial to making life better by water and I am one of hundreds of individuals across London & South East region who give their free time regularly to the Trust. As well as litter picking and leading guided walks I also recently presented a series of “virtual open day” films for our website, showcasing the rich history and engineering heritage of the Grand Union Canal. I’ve been able to use my professional background in broadcasting to bring the work done by our charity to a wider audience.
As a London mooring ranger I’ve been lucky enough to call the canal towpath my “office” since 2015. I work day-to-day with boaters. There are twice as many boats on the canals around London & South East as there were 10 years ago, so we all have to share the space in a considerate way. For me that means checking boats are moored safely and responsibly. But it can also involve being a kind of “canal social worker” – assisting vulnerable boaters or rough sleepers, working with local councils to tackle antisocial behaviour – as well as jobs like putting up signs. I love it.
I’m the business and corporate engagement partner for London & South East and I match businesses who want to give back to their local community to volunteering opportunities. Corporate volunteering days are an income stream for our charity, so we can focus scarce funds on maintaining our fragile infrastructure, but also to get some of that work done. Sometimes that might be something on land such as clearing vegetation or it could be a water-based activity such as a “paddle and pick” litter blitz from canoes. I’m proud of the work we do to transform places and enrich lives.
