Last year, we rescued 59 babies. That means 59 of Uganda's most vulnerable little ones were rescued and will grow up knowing the hope of Jesus.
Across our three villages— Bbira, Laminadera, and Suubi, 3,336 children are being raised in a loving family. Here they are growing up with food, clothes, medical care, and an education as we teach them their value in Christ.

In 2022, we embraced 1,504 women with the love of Jesus as we equipped them with adult literacy classes, vocational skills, business training, and job opportunities.
Founders' Message As Marilyn and I reflect over the past 40 years, we stand in awe and wonder at God’s incredible faithfulness. Jesus made a way where there didn’t seem to be a way. And today, we can only look back and say, “Glory to God. Look what He did.”
I realize, in many ways, Marilyn and I have been a recognizable part of Watoto, but it has never been about us. It’s always been about Jesus and the army of people who decided to be obedient to God’s calling to help look after the vulnerable. Today, Watoto is full of people serving with all their hearts. From the parking lot attendant to the person cleaning the toilets—everyone is critical because we’re all serving Jesus. I think of the story of the widow’s mite in Luke. She gave everything she had. To the casual observer, it didn’t look like much, but Jesus saw and marveled at her generosity. It’s the same throughout Watoto. There are literally thousands of people playing a vital role, giving all they have to serve God and His Kingdom—people like you. Because of your commitment, sacrifice, and generosity we are able to do the work God has called us to do. You might not ever be called on a stage and be applauded for what you do, but God sees you and He knows. And I want to say thank you. Marilyn and I will continue to be a support anyway we can. But we have felt that undeniable nudge in our spirits that it’s time to release and let the next generation lead. So, it’s with great joy and a sense of pride that we’ve handed over the leadership of Watoto to Pastor Julius Rwotlonyo and his wife Vernita. Some of you may know they have been assuming more and more responsibilities over the past few years as Marilyn and I prepared for our next stage of life. It has been a little like teaching someone to drive a car. I was behind the wheel, explaining, teaching. Then slowly I went into the passenger seat, then the back seat. Eventually Julius was driving on his own. We could not be more excited for what God has in store for Watoto. He has always provided, including relationships with people like you. As we reflect and celebrate the past 40 years, we know the next 40 years will be even more exciting. Thank you for your love and continuing this journey with Watoto. The Legacy of Love In February 2023, Watoto celebrated a truly historic moment. As a result of years of mentorship and a deep personal relationship, our founders Gary and Marilyn Skinner officially handed over the leadership of Watoto to Pastor Julius and Vernita Rwotlonyo.
This Commissioning Service was a public declaration of the Skinner’s commitment to the future of Watoto and their belief in the next generation of leadership. It was also a beautiful opportunity to honor the enduring legacy of love we saw exemplified in the lives of Gary and Marilyn. And above all, it was a celebration of God’s faithfulness and provision to Watoto yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Nearly 40 years ago, God gave Gary Skinner the vision to start an Englishspeaking church in Kampala, Uganda. Moving his family to war-torn Kampala, he was determined to obey God and bring hope to the hopeless through the gospel of Jesus. Because of this selfless act of faith, Watoto Church was born. Not long after, Africa was completely devastated by the AIDS crisis. Throughout Uganda people began dying, making thousands of children orphans. Again, God spoke to Gary saying, “Look after my children.” It was a reminder that God is the father to the fatherless. Today, over 30,000 people attend weekly celebrations, and tens of thousands watch services on TV and online. And as we share the love of Christ as a church, we care for thousands of people in our communities. We are grateful for our legacy and inspired to move forward into the future with the same dependence on God as we Celebrate Christ and Care for Community.

Message from our Leaders
God is faithful—He will never abandon us or leave us alone. I know this deeply. When I look at all the good things happening in Uganda, South Sudan, and Africa as a whole, we are not where we used to be, and I can only say it is because of God’s faithfulness.
to watch an evangelistic drama and that’s when I gave my heart to Jesus. As I became a teenager, I faced personal challenges. Once again, I found myself at Watoto Church. This time, I sat towards the back. As I experienced the dynamic and youthful worship service, the word of God spoke to me in a practical way; and with the clear vision of the church, my heart was drawn to get involved in this transformational journey of bringing healing to broken communities. At age 16, I recommitted my life to Jesus. Shortly after, I joined Watoto Church and began serving in the youth group and small groups. After graduating from university in civil engineering, I went as a missionary to the UK for a year on behalf of the church. Upon my return, I again volunteered with the youth eventually joining staff as the youth pastor and later a campus pastor.

No child should know the sound of bombs exploding, but I did in the early 80’s as a little boy. Shortly after, the entire continent was ravaged by HIV/AIDS. The affects are still being felt today. God saw us through this season and is still bringing healing today. When I was 10, I went to a place called KPC (now Watoto Church) 10

We know that every baby who is abandoned, rejected by those who were supposed to love and protect them, can rest in the confidence that they are accepted by God and are precious to Him.

In 2022, 2,751 students across our three Watoto villages were learning and studying, striving to become the future leaders God has called them to be.
Medical
Each of our Watoto villages has a medical clinic to provide the care needed for our families. We also extend healthcare to people in the surrounding communities. Last year, with the help of our amazing international partners, we were able to provide medical care to almost 9,000 people in northern Uganda. Plus, 929 children and mothers received much needed dental care.

Worship Academy
With over 850 students in music, dance, media, and fine arts, our Worship Academy is equipping young leaders with skills and a passion for worship. We're teaching children like Raymond to use their gifts to tell their own story—and find healing in the process.

Song of Rescue
Raymond was born on Christmas Day, a time when many people around the world are opening gifts, gathering with friends and family, and celebrating the birth of Jesus. But tragically his life started very differently. Instead of being embraced in his mother’s arms and feeling the love and joy of
That could have been the end of his story, but God has a beautiful plan for Raymond’s life.
The next morning a janitor found him, scooped him up, and rushed him to the authorities for help. Soon after, he was placed in a local orphanage, but it was overcrowded, and he wasn’t able to receive the proper care or nutrition he needed. Eventually, Watoto learned about Raymond’s situation— and rescued him. He was finally able to feel the warm embrace of a mother’s love by his new Watoto mother, Psalm 139:13-4a (NIV) Mama Susan, and he began to heal.

At an early age, Mama Susan discovered Raymond had a talent for music and begin to nurture the calling on his life. And when he was eight years old, Raymond’s gift of music was further affirmed when he got the amazing opportunity to travel with the Watoto Children’s Choir, sharing his beautiful voice and story everywhere he went. After tour, Raymond continued to use his voice to praise God for all He was doing in his life. He joined the Worship Team at children’s church and eventually in the main church, and as Raymond praised God, his relationship with Him grew deeper and deeper.
During a song writing retreat, Raymond went off alone and God reminded him of his story. "I opened my Bible and as I read, tears started rolling down my cheeks. I was overwhelmed by the presence of God and right in that moment He reminded me of my story. From that flowed the lyrics to my song, 'A Song of Rescue.'" Through the Worship Academy, Raymond has had amazing mentors teach and inspire him—both locally and from around the world; worship leaders like Brad and Rebekah, Mia Fields, and Jon Goode, along with some of our very own including James, Jackie, Emma, Bruce, Ben, and many others. And he's also had incredible sponsors who have supported and encouraged him along the way.

For the past three decades, the Watoto Children’s Choir has been traveling the world, sharing the good news of Jesus. Through song, dance, and a powerful expression of praise, our Watoto children inspire people everywhere as they share their stories of restoration and hope. During the last few years, however, the pandemic had a major impact on our choir. But Jesus provided and allowed for us to use this time to hear from him and create some new music. This is why we are proud to present our brand-new album, “Better Days—There Is Hope”. And we’re thrilled to announce we are back on the road again. We cannot wait for you to hear the album or see us in person on tour. We firmly believe our new music will minister to you personally and remind you how we all serve a God who can heal, comfort, and meet all our needs. Look for us on the road and check out the album anywhere you stream music.

Because of your support, Roney was rescued as a baby and now gets to grow up with everything he needs to be healthy and whole—a warm bed, yummy food, an education, medical care, a family who loves him, and the hope of Christ. When asked what he loves most about growing up in Watoto, Roney said, "Here I have a mother who loves me."

Watoto Farms
Our farms are a key part of our sustainability efforts. They provide fresh produce and eggs to nearly 3,700 children and mothers across our three villages—helping them grow healthy and strong. In addition to our agriculture and chicken farms, we have a goat farm that supplies goats' milk to Baby Watoto, ensuring the littlest ones in our care receive the vital nutrition they need. Our farms not only feed our families, but they also strengthen the community by providing jobs, as well as hands-on training for our children. Here, young adults like Maria get the opportunity to Maria learn and gain firsthand experience. Our goal is to train and empower people as we facilitate community transformation. We believe that together, we have a bright, sustainable future.

Our chickens laid over 1.7 million eggs last year, providing nutritious food for our children and mothers. And there was more than enough, so we sold the surplus in the local market to help the community. 48

Amos and Fazil both came to Watoto as young boys. Here, they were embraced by their new Watoto families, and as they grew up they discovered a passion for farming. Amos and Fazil are excited to continue learning and growing in this field and look forward to being able to give back and help their younger Watoto brothers and sisters one day.
Amos and Fazil Stephen came to Watoto when he was only three years old and credits his Watoto mother for who he is today. He’s spent the last year on the farm and loves to plant, nurture, and watch seeds grow. He says it makes him feel like a Doctor of Agriculture because he's able to give plants life which in turn feed and sustain life for others. Hudson, Mama Irene, and Albert
Earning just $1 a day, Irene found providing for her two sons Albert and Hudson impossible. This is heartbreaking for any mother, and it was completely devastating for Irene. As a single mother, she was lost and alone. At her most desperate moment, a friend invited her to come over for a bible study. There she learned about Watoto Neighbourhood and how vulnerable women, just like her, were receiving business training and hope for tomorrow. “When the community worker from Watoto found me,” Mama Irene shared, “I couldn’t even afford to buy a candle to have light at home.”

Mama Catherine and her children Catherine is a mother of seven. Sadly, after giving birth to her youngest three—triplets who aren’t even one year old yet—her husband abandoned her. In an instant she became a single mother with no source of income—and felt hopeless. As a mother, she wanted the best for her kids, but instead she struggled to provide enough milk and food for her little ones, so they became malnourished and were in and out of the hospital frequently. And with no way of paying school fees for her oldest children, they weren't able to go to school, leaving them vulnerable and their futures uncertain. Catherine was desperate and felt it was all just too much for her to bear.

She was welcomed with open arms and as she attended discipleship classes, she began to understand God’s love for her and realize that He has a plan for her life. Catherine is currently learning business skills and hopes to one day have her own small business. In the meantime, while she’s still getting on her feet, Watoto is helping her with childcare for the babies and providing her family with food.

Keep a Girl in School
Imagine not being able to afford feminine hygiene products, soap, or clean panties for your daughter—and imagine her future depended on it. Sadly, this is the reality for many in Uganda and South Sudan; girls drop out of school simply because they can't afford feminine hygiene products or the basic fees to go to school. But together we’re changing this! Through our Keep a Girl in School initiative, we’re working hard to ensure that no girl misses out on an education because of her economic circumstances. So, we’re coming alongside girls and their families to help ease the financial burden by meeting their basic need of sanitary products— and helping reduce the dropout rate in the process. In fact, last year we distributed packages of sanitary pads, bars of soap, and new panties to thousands of girls throughout Uganda and South Sudan. With your support, we are keeping girls in school, educated, and empowered. Thanks for giving these girls the bright future they deserve. 58

In addition to providing sanitary products, we reached 9,938 vulnerable girls in Uganda and South Sudan with the love of Jesus—teaching them feminine hygiene education and letting them know that their lives matter.

Our team works hard to keep girls in school. So, we celebrate that after lots of follow up, 27 girls who had previously dropped out of school, returned to class. That's 27 girls who could have ended up a tragic statistic, but now have a bright future ahead.
Last year, we partnered with 69 schools in Uganda and South Sudan as part of our Keep a Girl in School initiative.

Watoto began in the 1980s in Kampala, Uganda. As the ministry grew, so did the need to facilitate support. Today, we have 11 support offices throughout the world where our partners and sponsors live. Each office is regulated by a local Board of Directors, ensuring good practices are followed at all levels. Through your partnership with Watoto, you have extended hands of love and compassion to those in need. You have rescued babies who were discarded at birth. You have provided literacy lessons to mothers who never had a chance to finish school because they got married at the age of 14. You are providing education, healthcare, clothing, and nutritious food to the 3,000+ children living in our Watoto Children’s Villages. OPINION We have audited the accompanying financial statements of Watoto Child Care Ministry, Inc. (a nonprofit organization), which comprise the statement of financial position as of December 31, 2022, and the related statements of activities and changes in net assets, functional expenses, and cash flows for the year then ended, and the related notes to the financial statements. In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Watoto Child Care Ministry, Inc. as of December 31, 2022 and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America. BASIS FOR OPINION We conducted our audit in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Statements section of our report. We are required to be independent of Watoto Child Care Ministry, Inc. and to meet our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the relevant ethical requirements relating to our audit. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. RESPONSIBILITIES OF MANAGEMENT’S FOR THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America; this includes the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. In preparing the financial statements, management is required to evaluate whether there are conditions or events, considered in the aggregate, that raise substantial doubt about Watoto Child Care Ministry, Inc.’s ability to continue as a going concern within one year after the date that the financial statements are available to be issued.
