Waukesha County’s Park System has so much to offer families and visitors this winter and spring. I invite you to experience new features in several of our outdoor spaces, as well as a safe return to festivals and events, including some that were put on hold last year. There’s something for everyone, no matter your age or ability. We also have lots of opportunities for people to give back to the community through our robust volunteer programs. Don’t forget that we offer spaces for many winter activities, including cross-country skiing, fat tire biking, snowshoeing, and hiking, in addition to other year-round outdoor activities. Please read through this guide to learn about everything available for you to explore. These programs can help us: • Create opportunities for everyone to explore the outstanding natural resources in the Waukesha County Park System • Protect the county’s lakes and streams by informing citizens on how property management decisions impact water quality • Better understand how our actions impact the environment and how we can work collaboratively to conserve our unique natural resources through a variety of science-based programs • Increase the quality of material recycled from households and businesses to reduce our environmental impact • Protect the quantity and quality of groundwater resources in the county by promoting water conservation and groundwater infiltration Enjoy the great outdoors in Waukesha County!

In the beginning of the 17th century, the invention of the telescope by Galileo revolutionized our knowledge of the Universe. Finally, in the 20th century with the advent of rockets, it became possible to go above the earth’s atmosphere and observe X-ray and gamma ray radiation which are the marks of the hot and violent Universe. But it is not only light that can give us information about the cosmos. Neutrinos and cosmic rays also provide vital information. Finally, the detection by the LIGO experiment of gravitational waves from two merging black holes opened a new window in astrophysics. This video presents images of the cosmos as revealed by all these different messengers.

And at night? In the darkness of the night, they guard us while we sleep. Without them, we would not have navigation in our cars or mobile phones, accurate weather forecasts, and in fact many everyday items, either. Do you ask who they are? None other than artificial satellites! Satellite technologies help us every day. They are the symbol of international cooperation across the continents. And they might enable us to live on this planet for another millennium.

We Couldn't Do It Without
YOU!
Retzer Nature Center is a treasure located in the heart of Waukesha County. It’s legacy dates back to 1973 when Mrs. Florence Retzer bequeathed her farm to the County Parks System to be utilized as a public park to “conserve the scenery, nature life and wildlife, leaving the land unimparied for the enjoyment of future generations.” The generous support of countless donors, volunteers, and caring members of the community have helped develop, maintain and support the Nature Center. You, too, can be part of this continuing legacy by supporting the Nature Center in various ways:
DISCOVERY TRAIL PROJECT
The Discovery Trail Project is now underway! This multiphase project is revitalizing and expanding accessibility of the paved trail at Retzer Nature Center. A gateway feature will be constructed at the entrance and create a series of “Exploration Stations” along the trail for outdoor education, sensory-based play experiences, and STEM activities for families and school groups. The trail will also include an area for outdoor classes and events to fully immerse attendees of all abilities in nature.
LEAVE YOUR MARK PROJECT
Leave your
MARK
Leave your mark on the new boardwalk at Retzer Nature Center. Recognize friends, family, yourself, your business, or a special event or memory while supporting our efforts to improve the educational and recreational enjoyment of our visitors.
FRIENDS OF RETZER NATURE CENTER
When you donate to The Friends of Retzer, your contribution will be used to help preserve the natural beauty and serenity of the Retzer Nature Center, maintain and expand its facilities, support environmental education programs and teach our community about the importance of being responsible stewards of the world in which we live.

In 2017 the Planetarium completed a major technology upgrade that converted the technology used to digital-full dome-video, and Astronomy programming expanded to include Biology, Health, Weather Systems, and Chemistry. The planetarium is now turning its attention to needs in its reception, student laboratory, and pre- and post-show areas. The project plan includes creating spaces which will simulate an outer space environment where students and visitors can be challenged with rotating, hands-on exhibits, experiments and encouraging scientific exploration.
https://www.gofundme.com/f/see-your-name-in-the-stars *Donors that contribute $250 or more will have their names printed within a night sky graphic on dark ceiling panels in the Planetarium exhibit hall.
The “Friends” of the Planetarium was formed in January of 2000. It is a community organization for anyone interested in astronomy, space exploration and the effective use of the planetarium. It is also a support group for the ongoing activities, outreaches and the spread of science education to our community. Friends memberships run from the 2022 Spring Equinox (Sunday, March 20th) to the 2023 Spring Equinox (Monday, March 20, 2023).
