For 25 years we have chosen to only work with organisations and people who share our values and concerns. That’s why we understand our clients and have the expertise and experience to help them communicate the messages that matter. We believe that the best results are achieved when people work together in an open and honest way. Working together is at the heart of how we operate – and that’s just one of the reasons why we’re a worker co-operative.

ChildWorld magazine EveryChild is an international development charity working to stop children growing up vulnerable and alone.

“wave recently helped EveryChild re-launch ChildWorld, their regular magazine for supporters. They introduced a new, more colourful and user-friendly format, with snappier, punchier articles and strong use of photography and imagery. They also managed to reduce the cost of producing the magazine quite considerably. Their creative input throughout the process has been invaluable, and they have always delivered issues on time and on budget. ChildWorld has now become a powerful communications tool and EveryChild has had excellent feedback on the relaunch from supporters, trustees and staff.
ChildWorld magazine is distributed to donors, personal and corporate sponsors, as well as London and overseas staff. Our brief was to create a lively and engaging magazine that would keep them all informed and interested in the work the charity carries out worldwide.
Joanna Fell Marketing Communications Manager (to August 2011)
wave has been working with EveryChild since 2003. We have worked on annual reports, research and programme reports, direct mail campaigns, e-alerts and e-marketing, branding, stationery and posters, exhibitions and signage plus the re-design and development of their website. Our work has gradually helped move their brand forward, prompting a brand review based on our initial work on the magazine and annual reviews.

“The prospectus has been very favourably received by the general public, staff and students. We have had many positive comments about the design of the prospectus and feel it gives a very strong image of the college. From the initial meeting and presentation of concepts through to final delivery the team at wave has surpassed the brief and our expectations. They delivered the project on time and within budget and coped with whatever we threw at them.”
2011-12 Prospectus Bromley College offers a vast range of courses to help students acquire skills and qualifications for working life. Over 8,000 students (ranging from 16-18-year-olds to adult learners) enjoy state-of-the-art facilities following extensive redevelopments, with the Bromley Campus set in acres of greenery and, following the recent merger, the urban and accessible Orpington Campus. The prospectus is the college’s main marketing publication to students, their parents or carers and careers advisors. wave was commissioned to develop a new design and layout that was easy to navigate, inspiring and reflected the college’s brand values.
Oliver Campayne Marketing and Communications Manager
wave has been Bromley College’s principal print design agency since 2006. Along with the annual prospectus, wave has designed a range of marketing materials including annual reports, signage, advertising and branding for their 50th Anniversary.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure working with wave. I’m so glad that wave and War on Want have begun working together. Our new style of reports are nothing short of amazing, and I’m happy to have been a part of that process.”
Reports War on Want has been fighting poverty, inequality and injustice in developing countries for 60 years. Our brief was to refresh the look and feel of War on Want’s thorough and wellresearched reports, adhering to and developing their strong identity, and reflecting the organisation’s commitment to activism worldwide. We devised a striking, hard-hitting design with strong typography and using a textured hessian motif throughout to break up the dense black and echo the distressed finish of their logo.

‘Up front’ newsletter and direct mail ‘Up Front’ is War on Want’s supporter newletter. We updated the design, changing the format and grid to allow for greater flexibility and additional and larger images.
We also design direct mail materials for War on Want. The latest ‘Breaking the Chain’ mailer features gritty ‘photocopied’ distressed figures representing the chain of supply for items manufactured in developing countries to underline how consumers at the ‘top’ of the chain have a responsibility to purchase ethically and can influence the conditions of workers across the globe.

Magazine refresh and fundraising booklet Sightsavers is an international charity working to eliminate avoidable blindness in the developing world. We were asked to develop more of a lively ‘magazine’ look and feel for Sightsavers News, their bi-annual communication aimed at keeping donors informed, engaged and inspired. Bearing in mind their recent rebrand, we achieved this by improving the masthead, developing distinct looks for the different sections of the magazine, using the colour palette more effectively and using a flexible grid to offer greater variety across the sections.
To accompany the winter edition of the news, we were also asked to design a fundraising insert, which shows the many ways supporters can get involved and raise money. The concept of ‘it all adds up’ was based on the idea of how the small things supporters do add up to so much more for Sightsaver’s beneficiaries.

“I have nothing but praise for the work that wave do on Communication. They managed to incorporate all our practical, editorial requirements into a design that is fresh and modern, without being ‘over-designed’ or too intensely fashionable. The feedback from our readers was overwhelmingly positive and we continue to receive praise from them on the look of the magazine. Over the time we have worked with wave, they have developed their understanding of our client group. Without fail, the staff at wave are easy to work with, flexible and friendly. They always meet deadlines and ‘go the extra mile’ to ensure the magazine drops onto our members’ doormats, looking good and on time.”
Communication magazine The leading UK charity for people with autism (including Asperger syndrome) and their families, NAS provides valuable information, vital support and pioneering services, and campaigns for a better world for people with autism. Following a competitive pitch in 2005, wave was selected to undertake a full redesign of their quarterly membership newsletter Communication, transforming it into a user-friendly, magazine-style publication that would be accessible to people with autism, their families and supporters. Communication offers its readers information, support and advice on the many services that NAS has to offer.
It is also used to help the organisation campaign for a better

‘from conflict to co-operation’ series Co-operatives UK is the national trade body that campaigns for co-operation and works to promote, develop and unite co-operative enterprises. From conflict to co-operation is a series of easily accessible guides that provide tools, tips and techniques for people working in community enterprises, showing how good governance can help avoid many of the conflicts which can arise when a group of people work together. Using illustrations by Angela Martin to explain many of the issues together with internally produced illustrations to depict historical and philosophical quotes, we helped create a resource which is both entertaining and helpful not just to community enterprises but to any group working together.
We have also designed the first two guides of the ‘Simply’ series, these are detailed guides packed with vital information about running community enterprises. A4 and perfect bound, they’re substantial documents covering all you need to know to run a successful community business!

Annual review 2010 The Plunkett Foundation’s aim is to help communities to take control of the issues affecting them through co-operation. We were invited to produce a range of materials including identity, traditional and new media for the Plunkett Foundation’s International Conference in 2012. The new visual identity for the conference used colours already existing in their palette but not currently in use. Interlocking leaves were introduced in a curve to represent the global aspect of the event whilst maintaining a similar shape to the Plunkett foundation logo.
Since being commissioned to work on this project, we are now working on a series of event materials and resource documents.

Tackling racism workbook The TUC is the national and international campaigning organisation that represents over 6 million workers in Britain, with 58 affiliated unions nationwide. As well as campaigning and lobbying for a fair deal at work, the TUC runs extensive training and education programmes for union representatives. Having worked on the previous edition of Tackling racism we were asked to re-work the fifth, launched in 2011. Tackling racism is an extensive and practical workbook to support trade union reps understand and challenge racist activities.
The TUC were one of our first clients and we are proud that our relationship is still going strong today. We have produced numerous reports, workbooks, event materials and information materials over the years, and continue to do so in our 25th year.

“wave deploys great strengths when it comes to the unionlearn brand: intelligent application of design elements; creativity in pushing the brand forward; and careful scheduling and execution of all layout work and production so that projects come in on time.”
The Learning Rep unionlearn is the TUC’s flagship learning provider, helping unions and their members to promote and develop opportunities for learning. Having worked with the TUC for nearly 25 years, wave was the natural choice to implement the new unionlearn brand across a raft of resources, publications and promotional materials. As the organisation has developed, new styles have been created to keep the brand looking fresh and relevant.
Rob Sanders Senior Publications Officer
wave also produces other regular unionlearn communications, including the South Eastern Region and Midlands ‘update’ newsletters, and an array of reports, campaign materials, education resources and exhibition materials.

Brand and website Spark + Mettle are a brand new agency that offers disadvantaged young people training and mentoring support to enable them to fulfil their potential and find a job they love. Spark + Mettle aim to enlist the support of organisations and individuals through their web presence, as well as attracting young people to sign up. Working with the client’s proactive online activities, we applied branded design elements to their existing WordPress CMS installation and social networking tools. As the project has evolved, we have adapted the site to provide a strong visual style across many interconnected technologies eg. email, twitter, facebook and online fundraising directory sites.

“It is just as I visualised it. A large site with over one hundred thousand words was all built within my budget, with each milestone being met by wave and best of all, wave's CMS exceeding my functional expectations. One of these little extras was so useful and timesaving, it made me want to dance a jig.
Our task for this site was to balance the business needs of the group with the needs of its constituent community operations. As a social enterprise, it was important that each of the component community transport operations were independent, both technically and structurally, and therefore were able to keep ownership and control of their own areas of the site. www.hctgroup.org

“Our web-site project was a complex one: six languages, around forty pages per language, quite a few of them interactive and code heavy. Our target was to deliver it within a very tight deadline and have a powerful back end, where our Marketing team could easily update and create pages on daily basis. Work with wave turned out very efficient: communication was excellent, testing environment was very helpful, flexibility and resourcefulness exceeded our expectations. Everyone was very attentive to our needs. Where there are companies ready to walk an extra mile for the customer, wave definitely does a lot more.”
Website in five languages Sedex is a not for profit membership organisation that facilitates responsible and ethical business practices in global supply chains. This site was needed quickly with complex requirements including a number of interactive and code heavy pages. The site uses the WordPress CMS and specialist plug ins to manage forty pages and manual translation into five languages. The clean and consistent design adapts to the needs of right to left reading languages like Arabic and Chinese. Sedex now have a CMS that staff can easily manage and develop without any intervention from us, except occasional advice. With over two thousand visitors a day, this is a user-friendly robust site that’s accessible, and all powered by wind. www.sedexglobal.com

“A big thanks from me on the work on the site. It looks fabulous and works just as we had hoped. Feedback here has been great and the funders are really happy. I know it has been a bit fiddly at times but I think we can all be proud of the result.
Website The Institute of Development Studies, based at the University of Sussex, is a leading global charity of international development research, teaching and communications. We were appointed to design and develop a website for the Bellagio Initiative, a research initiative based at IDS on the future of development and philanthropy, involving experts from around the world and culminating at an international conference in 2012. Using the open source WordPress CMS, we have configured a feature rich site, in two phases, all within a short lead time. Lively international interaction is taking place with nearly five thousand visitors and fifteen thousand page impressions within the first month.

“The new website is superb – I know supporters will be wowed by what they see. I am really impressed by the commitment and work shown by the wave team. I know EveryChild is probably quite a demanding client for the budget we actually have but I hope the innovative approach we are always seeking has been as interesting and rewarding for you as it has been for us.”
Website and microsites Following EveryChild’s recent rebrand, wave was commissioned to redesign their website and create a campaign microsite: Every child deserves a family. Both sites launched in the spring of 2010 with positive effect. The main site content was completely restructured into a new CMS and polled a high 17/20 marks in Third Sector magazine’s website review of May 2010. In 2011 wave also worked on updating the main site and created a new campaign microsite to accompany Beeban Kidron’s documentary ‘Sex, Death and the Gods’ raising awareness of the Devadasi practice in Northern Karnataka, India, and highlighting how young girls in the region are vulnerable to sexual exploitation. www.everychild.org.uk

+About us
Our history
+
wave was set up in 1987 as a design co-operative to provide a professional creative service to the not-for-profit sector. This was a conscious choice for us and today we are still proud to only work with organisations such as charities, public sector organisations, co-operatives and social enterprises who are committed to positive change and who share our beliefs, our concerns and our passions.
Our difference + As a co-operative, wave is controlled by the people that work in it – there are no owners or shareholders. We operate a flat, non-hierarchical management structure. Furthermore, being a co-op also defines the way we operate on a daily basis, working as a team, learning from and supporting each other and developing our personal skills through practical experience.
Our values
+
Co-operatives are based on the values of self-help, selfresponsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.
