HAVE YOU EVER SEEN SOMEONE SURFING WITH SUNGLASSES?
I have, about six years ago, one summer’s day at Sennen. When it came to surfing with shades, this guy had obviously put the time in and learnt all the tricks. He had applied fluro zinc to his nose before donning his aviators, thus avoiding overlap, and had a neoprene band attached to them so they didn’t fall off his head. Oh yeah, this cat was one smooth jiving money funkster, but after watching him flounder about in the white-water, getting hit in the face by his foamy, I realised something that till this day still stands true; you don’t need sunglasses to go surfing. However, before you fist-pump the air and run outside to stare at the sun through a giant magnifying glass, allow me to add this disclaimer; you DO need sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun. The ultraviolet radiation omitted from that glorious glowing orange orb can give you eye problems such as photokeratitis, cataracts, pterygium or just general cancer of the eyeball, if you don’t take measures to limit your exposure. The best way to protect your eyes is to wear a decent pair of sunglasses that reflect or filter out most of that UV light, but if you are a cheapskate like me you may have tried other methods including walking around doing a permanent salute, or wearing a balaclava the wrong way round so that you can just see through the holes in the wool. Side effects of these methods include an untanned hand shaped band across your forehead, overheating, and being arrested under the new anti-terrorism laws. The main reason though for wearing shades, as we all know, is that they can transform a shy, weird looking kook into an ice-cool badass dude who wouldn’t look out of place strolling down Hollywood Boulevard. Personally, I now regularly sport a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers, well cheap copies anyway. Not only do these keep my peepers well hidden from the mean ultraviolet rays, but they also make me look a little bit like Rick Astley, which is surely no bad thing?
