2011 The summer wetsuit, unlike its winter cousin, is something to really enjoy slipping into. It’s thin, body hugging and when worn in just black remarkably slimming. Hell, when I slip into my trusty XCEL 3/2 it looks like I have a six pack instead of a small paunch, put Selway in one and he looks like a six foot two super model, all be it with a receding hair line. But the really great thing about putting on a summer suit is that first surf in one, after months of five millimeters of piss ridden rubber cladding your body. It’s liberating, that first bottom turn to top turn combo feels so good, you’re flexible, after all that extra weight it feels like you’re ready to hop on the ‘QS. Of course this is actually rubbish, the extra flexibility is actually just making you wiggle and make crazy shapes whilst on your board a lot more easily. Never-the-less the summer suit is our friend, and I for one love mine. Now to the serious stuff, because it’s all too easy to lose your concentration when purchasing a 3/2. Yes summer is warmer so heat technology may not be quite as important, but you’ve got to bear in mind that you are hopefully going to be spending a hell of a lot of time in a summer suit, thus fit and comfort are every bit as important as they are in a 5mm thick steamer. So always try a suit on, unless of course you know your exact size in
that make. Seams are really important, make sure at no point are these likely to rub, I won’t go into loads of tech speak here I’ll leave that to the manufacturers, but just make sure none of the suit will rub you. Personally I love a front zip in the summer, don’t know what it is, think it’s just the extreme flexibility it gives your back, but I love them. It may not be as important to you guys but again just check out rubbing points, back zips, no zips they are all good. Longevity is always worth thinking about, because it’s summer generally you can get longer out of a 3/2 or a 2 millimeter suit than you can a winter one. Thus go for quality, my suit is approaching its fourth summer, yep four, it’s an incredible little suit although it is starting to wear a little thin now. So I’d advise to go for the upper end of your price bracket, that way you’ll get at least two summers out of it. Of course take care of a suit, wash it out after every use etc. Don’t leave it lying around in your coal shed or hanging on the line for the whole winter. That’s about it really, browse these next few pages, take in the suits, enjoy the shots of the athletic team riders sporting said suits and then take your hard earned cash down your nearest surf shop and get tooled up.
