O’NEILL: O’Neill Sea Odyssey (OSO) was founded in 1996 by wetsuit innovator and surfer Jack O’Neill. A living classroom was created on board a 65-foot catamaran sailing the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary where 4th - 6th grade students from schools throughout Central California receive a hands-on lessons about the marine habitat and the importance of the relationship between the living sea and the environment. The program is conducted on board the catamaran with follow-up lessons at the shore-side Education Centre at the Santa Cruz Harbour. It is free of charge, but students earn their way into the program by designing and performing a project to benefit their community. oneill.com, oneillseaodyssey.org TIKI: We owe much of our 45 year success to being one step ahead of the curve (by design or by chance!). When the eco issue became a mainstream concern, we already had in place a number of waste saving plans and were investing heavily in greener surfboard construction (see the Tiki Feather Foil in the guide). So instead of releasing some special ‘green’ products to take the focus away from all the other stuff, we decided to expand the responsible production motives to all aspects of the business; air freighted samples were out. All packing and packaging is either from recycled or recyclable card. We switched to vegetable oil based polybags to wrap surfboards for shipping and introduced limestone neoprene into our top-end wetsuits. We haven’t made any big claims over any of this or painted ourselves green, we’ve just done the stuff that everyone should be doing – looking at reducing our impact on the planet, whether it’s resources, carbon footprint or waste. tikisurf.co.uk QUIKSILVER: For the second successive year, Quiksilver and Roxy ran their Green Campaign, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of preserving our water resources. The campaign featured on the web and in stores from June 1 to 23, 2011. Working under the slogan ‘Don’t Destroy What You Came To Enjoy’, the Quiksilver Group strives to protect its environments through a host of initiatives ranging from eco-design and environmental management, to awareness-raising events and partnerships with various associations. With a primary focus on protecting water resources, this new campaign aims to expand the message to all the group’s playgrounds: Quiksilver has adopted a new twist on the Green line, to symbolize its commitment to protecting the environment. A green line that can be seen in the windows of all the group’s stores, and inside too, pointing the way to our ecofriendly products. quiksilver.com PATAGONIA: The wild world we love is fast disappearing. At Patagonia, we think that business can inspire solutions to the environmental crisis. This means that what we make and how we make it must cause the least harm to the environment. We evaluate raw materials, invest in innovative technologies, and rigorously police our waste. Take a look at the Common Threads Initiative, bluesign® Standard, the Footprint Chronicles and more. We are proud to say that each and every product in our line now either contains an e-fibre or is recyclable. We also use a portion of our sales to support grassroots groups working to make a real difference through 1% for the Planet, we see it as our “Earth Tax”, to mitigate the damage we do. patagonia.com ASHORTWALK: Ashortwalk is a Cornwall based product design company. Started in 2003 by Dan Dicker, who left his previous job as a product designer/inventor at Dyson and moved south in order to realise a long-held desire: to set up a business, and live, ‘ashortwalk’ from the sea. From the humble beginnings of a shed in the back garden and a few new product ideas, the business has come a long way in seven
years. Ashortwalk now collect, recycle and turn everyday throw away waste into unique functional products, but equally as important they are getting them into mainstream respected UK shops at mainstream respectable prices. This means that the UK public are being given an eco option without paying over the odds, which in turn means more and more waste is being saved from landfill. We are no longer in a shed, but our philosophy is still the same... and most importantly we are ashortwalk from the beach. ashortwalk.com FREEWATERS: We are Freewaters, a small group on a mission to improve the quality of life through superior product experience and through creative humanitarian initiatives. More specifically, we are on two parallel and fully integrated campaigns: to design the best sandals and house shoes ever seen and to help find solutions to the global drinking water pandemic. By 2025 it is predicted that 1,800,000,000 people will live where fresh water is scarce. Every year, more people die from the consequences of unsafe water than from all forms of violence, including war. Dirty water and a lack of proper hygiene kills 3,300,000 people annually, most of them children under the age of five. We believe access to clean water is a basic human right. With your help (the purchase of one pair of freewaters allows us to provide free drinking water to an individual for one year) we are drilling freshwater wells and taking powerful steps towards transforming lives. freewaters.com, projectfreewaters.org DRAGON: Dragon proudly introduces the E.C.O (Environmentally Conscious Optics), an initiative inspired by Rob Machado to actively investigate the method of making and manufacturing environmentally friendly sunglasses. With the help of Rob, we set out on a mission to discover and incorporate ways in which we can reduce our footprint on the environment. The result is the first EVER sunglasses with material made from 100% renewable origin. This means that Mother Nature replenishes the material used for the sunglasses at the same rate that it is consumed. The E.C.O. will launch as part of Rob Machado’s Experience collection, which includes FSC certified packaging material and comes with 100% organic cotton bags, printed with water-based ink. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) managed forests
deals with proper forest management and ensures that the trees used to make the paper are from well managed forests designated for paper making. fsc.org, dragonalliance.com RIZ: The aim is simple, to bring you the most beautiful and environmentally friendly boardshorts in the world. Noticing a niche in the market for exceptionally crafted, sophisticated and sustainable beachwear, all of Riz’s shorts are made from 100% recycled and recyclable polyester and digitally printed using water based inks. Riz’s shorts can be returned, and the fabrics recycled into new polyester materials. For taking part in the ‘Rizcycling’ programme you would be rewarded with 25% off a new pair of Riz boardies. The life cycle of the shorts then begins again. Forever ‘Alive with Pleasure’! The shorts are also produced in small limited edition runs using unique prints. To highlight their uniqueness each pair is hand numbered making them even more special. Going forward Riz hopes to collaborate and promote designers and environmental movements alike, believing it’s better to join forces and work as a creative community.
