waves music conFerence 2012 The Waves Music Conference is part of the festival and offers keynotes, panels, and workshops from 4th to 5th October 2012. The specialist programme, which is meant to be the basis and inspiration for a long-term, pan-European cooperation, addresses current issues in the music industry as well as the key subject of Eastern and Western European exchange.

➜ greaTer involvemenT oF musicians National and international musicians will be increasingly involved in the conference programme. At the Waves Music Conference, the points of view and experiences of musicians will be heard and taken into consideration; input which is missing at many industry meetings.

➜ worKshops For local musicians

During the Waves Music Conference, Vienna becomes the meeting point of international disseminators of the music business such as festival and concert organisers, labels and publishing houses, as well as managers and media people. Internationalisation is a key issue for many representatives of local artists and their economic environment. The conference offers the opportunity to establish important, long-lasting contacts to all those who have not yet been present at international festivals and conferences. The following improvements will be implemented in 2012: ➜ even more programme This year, more than 35 keynotes, panels, and workshops will take place. Three rooms will simultaneously be in use at the conference hotels Stefanie and City Central for that purpose. ➜ Broad Topical scope Apart from the main focus „Cooperation between East and West“, the conference also addresses current issues such as adequate remuneration by streaming services, new ticketing models, DIY labels, or the significance of music blogs. But the long runner copyright law, too, will be on the agenda; with a focus on the hitherto rarely heard positions of independent artists and labels. Numerous information panels and workshops – partly in cooperation with wienXtra soundbase and SAE – deal with topics such as funding, visa in Eastern Europe, sync rights, digital marketing, and many more.

will Be inTegraTed inTo The conFerence

In this way, the conference becomes equally relevant for international disseminators and national newcomers. And the new talents get the opportunity for an initial international exchange. ➜ FeedBacK sessions Acts selected by an expert jury for having the potential for an international career will get constructive feedback from renowned music professionals. There will also be a feedback session dedicated to the web presence of bands or labels. ➜ guesT counTries poland and France For the first time, there will be two guest countries at Waves Vienna; one from Western Europe, one from Eastern Europe – corresponding to the festival motto “East Meets West”. The two guest countries of the festival also constitute key subjects of the conference programme.

Austrian Music Export On Saturday, october 6th, Austrian Music Export is offering a very special showcase at Recordbag and a visit to austrians number one radio station fm4. Austrian Music Export is a joint initiative of the Austrian Music Information Center mica – music austria and the Austrian Music Fund in close cooperation with the organisers of the Austrian booths at international music trade fairs. Austrian Music Export’s aim is to be a service and resource centre for exporters of contemporary Austrian music in all genres and aspects (recordings, live, sync, etc.). This includes providing access to information on Austrian artists and companies, building a substantial network of industry professionals and media, providing travel support and representing Austrian music at international trade shows, conferences, and festivals. Austrian Music Export promotes international showcases of local artists and develops measures to strengthen international exploitation of Austrian repertoire by acting as a catalyst for export-oriented Austrian labels, agencies, and artists. Austrian Music Export focuses on the promotion of Austrian music, providing access to information on Austrian artists and companies regarding operational activities. Furthermore, it funds Austrian artists, labels,

agencies, and artist management companies to showcase at professional events, amongst other things. The two Austrian Music export events are taking place at two different but essential spots of the Austrian and Viennese music scene. First up is the visit to Radio FM4, Austria’s number one radio station when it comes to alternative and electronic music. FM4 is a national radio station operated by ORF, the Austrian national public service broadcaster. Afterwards the delegates tour bus will take you to Recordbag, one of the best recordstores in Vienna. Dust Covered Carpet will play an in-store gig, and will most likely captivate the audience with their lyrics, which pinpoint disillusioning feelings accompanied by folky sounds. On their LP “Witness Me Pass Out”, those folk influenced tracks are pervaded with clean synthesiser sounds and wavy bass lines. SAT 06.10., 15:00–15:45 Austrian Music Export Showcase @ Recordbag; open for everyone;

Violetta PArisini

austrian reception #1 Together with Poland, Austria is organising a reception on Thursday. Violetta Parisini, the poster girl of Austria’s singer-songwriter scene will be performing. The Viennese Violetta Parasini celebrates spicy singer-songwriter pop with a sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter aftertaste. Thoughtfulness and lightheartedness lie close together. After the critically acclaimed debut, her second album “Open Secrets” was released in January this year. It comes across as more reduced, although at times a lot more playful. The singer has stated that she has emancipated herself from a number of things – which ultimately lead to a more melancholic sound. The eleven new tracks are the preciously bitter testimony of self-empowerment of a sensitive musician. Especially the contradiction between the allure of the melodies and the reservation in the studio regarding the use of embellishment is addictive. It is about losing control and fear, about complexity and the paradoxes of love, and the naivety with which it is often practiced in daily life. Parisini believes in the potential of change within art. Violetta spares herself the big paroles, but rather tiptoes slowly into our hearts. She resists the temptation to preach, 06

“because the world works different for everyone. But I think that if I write how it works for me, then that can inspire someone else.” Such rare authenticity brings happiness, carrying an often subversive idea – for example the vision to stand against the impertinences of today’s system and reach happiness that way. It is often those diversions that define life and they definitely shaped Violetta Parisini in a crucial way. With “Open Secrets”, she impressively shows how art and life can be congruent. Violetta Parisini might be laying the foundations for an international career, so it is definitely worth to catch the Polish and Austrian Reception at Hotel Stefanie – not just because of the country-specific food and drinks that will be served for free. Esteban’s

austrian reception #2 On day two of the festival, a second reception with Austrian participation will take place – in cooperation with Luxembourg; Esteban’s and Sun Glitters will be performing. A big part of Waves Vienna’s line-up consists of Austrian artists – during the festival several Austrian showcases are taking place. For example, the Austrian Music Export Showcase at Recordbag with Dust Covered Carpet, the Siluh Night with Sex Jams and Mile Me Deaf, and also two fantastic showcases at Heineken Music Train (a tramway moving alongside the ring road from 21 to 3 o’clock) – hosted by the electronic labels Houztekk and Luv Shack Records. Obviously, it is not just one genre that Austrian bands are committed to and so everything from electro, house to punk and folk to slacker pop is present at the festival. With nearly 40 Austrian acts, Waves Vienna presents a full programme for all Austrian music lovers and people that are yet to become ones. 08

One of those is Christoph Jarmer aka Esteban’s, who works according to the motto: do everything yourself. Actually, he is the bassist of the Austrian band Garish, but since they had taken a break, Jarmer set out to conquer new frontiers. He sings in English – in contrast to his regular band. The musical ingrediences he uses: a teaspoon of folk pop, a pinch of danceable rhythms, sprinkled with some Spanish flair. The songs are refreshing, not overdone or overloaded and remind you of your last holiday. So the reception will be the perfect time to enjoy good music that is tinged with some summer feeling. Berlin music

wunderbar!

Some of the brightest lights of the city’s music scene will gather for Berlin’s Waves debut.

Deutsche Initiative Musik invites you to a very special showcase / boat tour.

Berlin Music Commission represents the interests of music businesses in Berlin and brings together local and international business partners. Its activities range from bringing together the key players in Berlin’s music scene to public relations / lobbying and to provide a focal point from which to market Berlin as a music hub. It aims to establish itself as a gateway to the local music scene. It sees itself as a driving force when it comes to strengthening Berlin’s music industry and aims to put it on the right path to eventually compete with New York or London.

Initiative Musik’s aims are the support of young talent, spreading German music abroad, and the integration of people with migration background. Its core area of activity is contemporary music: rock, pop, and jazz. Since 2008, around 450 artists and infrastructure projects have been supported. Funding is offered for recording, promotion, and touring.

Feel invited to join the get together at Berlin Music – establish new contacts, strengthen existing ones, and “Listen to Berlin!”. And the Golden Choir is the oneman project of producer and musician Tobias Siebert. On stage, a vinyl recording of himself playing all the instruments substitues a backing band. Me and My Drummer, Charlotte Brandi and Matze Pröllochs, create music that covers the genres indie and dream pop.

On Friday, delegates are invited to join Initiative Musik on a two-hour boat tour on MS Schlögen with performances by Fenster, who are blending macabre stories and surreal symbolism, Wrongkong, a GermanCanadian pop band, and the German-Greek couple Sea + Air. The most important attributes of Sea + Air’s music are the next to supernatural harmony of the vocals and the tenacious idea that German and Greek cultural assets are a good basis for pop music which is both modern and timeless. If the scenery on the MS Schlögen is not enough to make you attend this showcase, the performing bands definitely should be!

Paula & Karol

polish reception The joint reception of Poland and Austria kicks off the Pro Programme of Waves Vienna with performances of the Austrian artist Violetta Parisini and the Polish band Paula & Karol. Waves Vienna Festival considers itself a showcase festival where new bands who have international format and deserve more attention can be discovered. The main focus is on music from Eastern Europe, because, since Glasnost, a lot of changes have happened; yet, those musical accomplishments can unfortunately hardly be witnessed in Western Europe. True to the motto “East Meets West” a large number of acts from Eastern Europe will be performing alongside Western European artists at the festival. The specialist programme of the conference, too, is dedicated to the topic “East Meets West” – a motto which represents the basis and inspiration for a long-term, pan-European exchange. A part of the conference is also dealing with the music markets and scenes of Poland and France. With regard to Poland, the conference programme includes information on the Polish music scene, and insider information on how to enter the Polish market. 10

During the joint Polish-Austrian reception held at Hotel Stefanie on Thursday, Paula & Karol and Violetta Parisini will cater for the music side of the event. Free drinks and finger food will be served to appease your hunger. Paula & Carol, the representatives of the Polish music scene – actually a Canadian-Polish duo often performing with a big group of musicians – write cheerful folk songs with even merrier folk instruments. Their songs, filled with sweeping melodies and lyrics that mainly involve affinity and love – as opposed to today’s postmodern indifference – reach all generations and nationalities. Hardly surprising that The Guardian took notice of them. THU 04.10.,

Sun Glitters

Luxembourgian Reception music:LX and Sonic Visions will hold a reception for delegates at Hotel Stefanie on Friday, October 5th, with Sun Glitters performing. With the support of the Ministry of Culture and Sacem, music:LX contributes to the export development of Luxembourgian musicians abroad. This support comes in addition to the promotional, marketing, and financial investment of both, labels and artists. Sonic Visions, the Luxembourgian showcase festival and the accompanying conference, will take place for the fifth time this year. Over two days, Sonic Visions will spoil the audience with great bands. The conference programme includes interesting panels which invite you to swap ideas on business models in the music industry, copyright issues, and much more. The preliminary festival line-up has quite some gems to offer: The XX, C2C, Elektro Guzzi, Francis International Airport, Clock Opera, Rolo Tomassi, etc. More confirmations to follow soon. At Waves Vienna, three acts from Luxembourg will be performing: Hal Flavin, Inborn, and Sun Glitters, who 12

will also be playing at the Luxembourg reception. The name Sun Glitters could well be an associative description of the music of the sound tinkerer from Luxembourg. Some might call it chillwave, but this label is too narrow. Deep and broken beats, warm and energetic bass lines, floating samples, and playful synth riffs merge into a hypnotising soundscape which makes you want to lose yourself in it. And as his alias already seems to point out, his tracks are filled with a diffused-light ambiance with all elements from the icy electric piano to the gently wobbling synth bass decomposing and resurrecting itself every few seconds. Sun Glitters is one of those buzz acts that receive cheers from all sides; blogs, music magazines, etc. are all enthusiastic in their praise. FRI 05.10., 15:00–16:00

Loomit

bring on the night The international sprayer star Loomit will be interpreting the Eristoff wolf in his own graffiti style at Waves Vienna. Amidst the vibrant festival with its more than 100 acts and gigs, a very special happening will take place: right in front of the Pratersauna, the German sprayer star Loomit will give the Eristoff wolf a newly interpreted face during an exciting live performance. Just in time for the re-opening of Pratersauna, the international artist will spray the face of the legendary Eristoff wolf live in front of an audience onto the front wall of the party location. Waves Vienna and Pratersauna are providing the ideal frame and location for the event, which brings Matthias Köhler alias Loomit to Vienna. He is said to be one of Germany’s most significant and talented graffiti artists. His first works as a sprayer came about in 1983 and were inspired by his strong interest in the New Yorker hip-hop scene. Back then, he sprayed illegally at abandoned houses, companies, and public buildings. In 1995, Loomit joined other artists to work on the biggest graffiti in the world in Bergedorf- Lohbrügge. In Austria, he styled Salzburg’s football and ice-hockey stadium for Red Bull. THU 04.10.,
