Ramadan, Eid Mubarak & National Day in the UAE BY PRIYA MANIKAM Life in the UAE during the Ramadan period is different than what we were accustomed to back in Malaysia. Once the sun sets, the Muslims gear for their Iftar (breaking of fast) which traditionally starts with water and some dates followed by snacks and main courses. Back in Malaysia, we used to excitedly buy the various snacks and food sold at the bazaar but here friends usually invite their non-Muslim friends such as myself to their homes to break fast together. It is a fulfilling atmosphere as the womenfolk get to show off their culinary skills and everyone gathers to feast on the various goodies. Besides that, the government also sets up tents at various locations to give away food to break fast. At the end of the Ramadan period and after the sighting of the moon is done, a lot of merriment can be felt as residents get ready to be decked in their finery for Eid (Hari Raya) and you can smell Biryani and sweet delicacies being prepared in Muslim homes. Friends and family gather outdoors and at mosques wishing Eid Mubarak to everyone irrespective of their caste and creed. This year, Hari Raya and Malaysian National Day fall on the same day. The Malaysian Embassy usually takes it in their stride to celebrate both the occasions with fellow Malaysians and friends. We would all first gather on the embassy grounds for the hoisting of the national flag, followed by singing the national anthem with great fervour. With all the festivities in the air, you can see everyone decked in their traditional outfits. After the anthem, there would be a speech by the Malaysian Ambassador and then the Hari Raya songs would blast away, followed by a lucky draw session and most importantly, food! Lots of kuih, traditional cuisine and deserts would be served buffet style to the delight of every Malaysian. Here’s wishing everyone Eid Mubarak and Selamat Hari Kebangsaan all the way from the Middle East. Yes, it is that time again when everyone looks forward to buying all sorts of goodies to break their fast and month end it is Hari Raya. With all the festivity in the air, you can’t help but indulge and it may not do justice to your waistline. Fret not, as we look into ways for you to enjoy your food and still maintain your weight during the holidays.
Don’t over-indulge on the holiday sweets. Choose which indulgences you have to have and choose them first. Also, try to avoid skipping meals which will slow down your metabolism and cause you to over-eat during the next meal. Enjoy all delicacies but in moderation and learn how to say No or Stop to yourself once you are full. Be kind to your tummy! If you feel guilty after all the indulgence; try setting aside 5 to 10 minutes in the morning or at night for a gentle mind/body workout, such as yoga or do light stretching workouts. Eat slowly and cut the portions into smaller bite sizes to avoid over-eating. Have some fruits before eating a heavy meal as this would prevent you from taking more servings than you should-and your waistline would thank you later. Go for a walk after having that wonderful buffet dinner at your aunt’s house. The fresh air also does wonders to the mind and body. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to stay hydrated as it is good for your overall health plus helps control your eating habits.

Read on more to find out about MommaMia Creations and the lady behind it. Why the name Mommamia? MommaMiia was named after my precious baby girl Mia. Three months after the birth of my baby girl, I’m left with the absence of my husband and that is how the whole MommaMiia idea came about. In the beginning, I handcrafted a few trinkets and sold it to family, friends and neighbours to raise money but as time went by, the passion grew more intense. Hopes for My Johor Bahru City BY Zaki Yamani Zakaria
A
s I am writing this article, I am in Bandar Melaka accompanying my wife attending an official work of hers. For us, it is good that once in a while we travel out of our routines but we also thought why is it always Melaka or Port Dickson why not places in Johor Bahru? We drove our way from Johor Bahru to Melaka via PLUS highway and exited at Air Keroh, at about 8pm and found our way with the help of the Garmin GPS.Travelling in Melaka at night is very interesting as there are so many colourful lighting decorations and buildings. We saw some trees on the road sides decorated nicely with colourful lights, looking just like I-City in Shah Alam. It seems that there are so many places to visit here. These interesting attractions in Melaka are clearly visible and not hidden (located far away from the city). We saw a huge Mydin which looks like a Mega Store. In fact it is the biggest Mydin in Malaysia. There are also Dataran Pahlawan, Menara Taming Sari, Kota A Famosa, Muzium Istana Kesultanan Melaka, Planetarium, Dutch Square, Kampung Morten, Melaka River Cruise, Taman Mini Malaysia, Taman Rama-rama, Taman Buaya and Zoo Melaka. There are also traditional, beautifully and creatively decorated trishaws in Bandar Hilir Melaka that we can hire to circle the town. There are many other interesting attractions that I have not mentioned here. I am impressed with the rapid development and growth that Melaka City has achieved. I am truly a proud Johor Bahru dweller and love the town I live in. What I am trying to highlight here is that I hope and wish Johor Bahru will be a better city than other cities in Malaysia. I hope there will be many more places of attraction developed and available in my home town. Occasionally, when some relatives or family friends from outside Johor Bahru come to visit us, the normal question asked will be “So, what are the interesting places that you recommend us to visit in Johor Bahru?” Well, in most cases we spontaneously answered “You need to check out Danga Bay.” Then they will respond “Oh, we have already been to Danga Bay. Is there any other interesting places to visit?” Then, we have to think for a while before suggesting them some places like Tanjung Piai, Desaru, Kota Tinggi Waterfall (which are quite far from Johor Bahru). If we think a little harder, we may then add the Royal Museum, Taman Istana, State Zoo, Plaza Angsana etc. The truth is in most occasions, we run out of ideas of the significant places of attraction in our home town. However, if we really know the plan that has been set-up for Johor Bahru under the Iskandar Malaysia development, I am sure we will be happier. In Nusajaya, we already have Kota Iskandar which is Johor state administrative center. The building’s architecture and environment are amazingly unique complemented by a beautiful Puteri Harbour . Besides that, the famous and long awaited Lego Land will soon be opened by next year which will be a strong motivating factor for more people to come and visit Johor Bahru. Numerous Universities have been officially opened earlier this year and will contribute to Nusajaya in being an Edu-city besides other higher learning institutions in its surrounding districts. page 16
Speculation says that Johor has plans to have its own MRT that will possibly connect to important locations within Johor Bahru and Singapore.This will be interesting as we are going to have a reliable and efficient transportation alternative. The new SenaiDesaru Expressway has been officially opened and has resulted in faster travelling from Johor Bahru Tengah to the east part of Johor Bahru areas such as Ulu Tiram, Pasir Gudang and Desaru. We can see that this year Johor Bahru has already had three 3D cinemas. We also have an indoor water theme park in Today’s Mall in Ulu Tiram which is a place that worth visiting and let the kids let loose. Last July, the annual event of Johor Bahru Art Festival took place. Various activities, shows, theaters, competitions and exhibitions were showcased. Johor Bahru also has what is famous in the UK the Car Boot Sale (CBS). The CBS is a monthly event organized by JOHO, a brand that promotes arts and creativity in Johor Bahru. All of these are definitely good signs of development in entertainment and recreational industries in Johor Bahru. Actually there are plenty more projects under development in Johor Bahru vicinity. I have not mentioned the likes of Danga Island, East Ledang, Johor Premium Outlet and Senibong Cove.. Basically, Johor Bahru will be making a lot of WAVES. SSK ft Otam Selamat Malam Label : Indie SSK’s latest single’s harrowing yet addictive beat has a chorus that makes you nod your head to well crafted lyrics of Malay rap. With a variety of local hip hop music, I dare say that SSK are Malay rap music’s redefinition. ‘Selamat Malam’ is their latest single off their upcoming album said to drop tentatively by this year. SSK or ‘Serius Selamba Krew’ consisting of Saph (Rapper/Beatmaker), NBE (Rapper) and DJ Jocular (DJ/Beatmaker) have made rapping in ‘bahasa pasar’ their brand since it caters best to the multiracial listeners. Hailing under the Rogue Squadron banner, they have been around since 2007 and released their first EP titled ‘RM’ in 2008 and have consistently put out singles and performances at various gigs and functions ever since. ‘Selamat Malam’, which was produced by Saph, leaves a lasting impression indeed. It’s the kind of song you listen to at the end of a long day, the title says it best. To me, what set SSK apart from the rest is their lyrics. Thought provoking lines like, “Haiti dilanda bencana satu dunia haru, artis Hollywood hanya mampu buat lagu, Perang kat timur tengah takde orang bertindak, Nak jaga hubungan politik dengan semua pihak” and lines like “Orang mati di sana sini nyawa dah tak berharga, peragut tak kira mangsa; perempuan mengandung, warga tua”, will make anyone sit back and ponder. The song reminded me of Black Star’s Respiration track, silky enough to make the listeners relax yet deep in content to reflect upon. Hoping that their album will drop soon so stay tuned to SSK’s updates via their facebook page. ‘Selamat Malam’ is currently at no.6 on XFM Underground charts.

Ingredients 16 Italian lady fingers 2/3 cup strong brewed coffee, room temperature 1/3 cup maple syrup 3 ounce package cream cheese 1/2 cup sour cream 1/2 cup maple syrup 12 ounce container frozen whipped topping 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder (for dusting)
DIRECTIONS Split Italian lady fingers lengthwise and use them to line the bottom and sides of an 8x8 inch dish. Stir together coffee and 1/3 cup maple syrup until smooth. Spoon mixture over Italian lady fingers that soaked in strong brewed coffee. In a large bowl, beat together cream cheese, sour cream and 1/2 cup maple syrup until smooth. Fold in whipped topping. Spread mixture over soaked Italian lady fingers. Cover and chill 15 minutes.
Dust with sifted cocoa just before serving.

I had the Death by Chocolate, TF Original and Fineapple yogurt topped with mango and kiwi fruits and a mix of cornflakes, marshmallows, crispies, a love letter and some Hershey’s chocolate syrup. It certainly was a colourful mix and it tasted great! The chocolate was really engaging mixed with the TF Original which made it a silky finish. I wasn’t a big fan of the ‘Fine-apple’ but it was compensated by the add-ons and I didn’t know that marshmallows on frozen yogurt can taste that good! Considered a healthy snack but you will be surprised to learn how many unhealthy versions can be found in your local supermarkets and elsewhere. There is no sugar added in Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt but do make sure you balance our your topping choice as it won’t be as healthy if you pick all the candies!

The fresh deco of the outlet is easy on the eyes and makes it the best spot for a snack or desert regardless of social or business call. They are Wifi equipped so you can stay connected while getting your FroYo! At RM5.30 per 100 grams, the price is decent as long as you don’t get carried away building a castle of toppings with your FroYo! Soon to come are more outlets across Johor Bahru; strategically located at Bandar Baru Uda, Permas Jaya, Setia Tropika and Masai. Quench your thirst with the ‘Kedondong juice with Asam Boi’, made of fresh kedondong (great hog plum). The Chicken, Mutton and Lamb Shank Briyani all come with similar servings of rice, egg, acar and some dhal. The chicken was fabulous! The portion was perfect and the meat was juicy with precise flavours. The mutton was well cooked and the seasonings used made a lasting impression. As for the first of its kind in Johor Bahru in briyani, the lamb shank’s portion is fit for a king and the meat was very tender, well seared and perfectly seasoned. The owner and chef, Mr. Dean informed us that the traditional recipe used is from Kerala, India, passed down from generations. The briyani rice is boil cooked and has no starch. No coconut milk or ghee is used! How about that for all of you health conscious briyani lovers? He also informed us that the Friday and Saturday specials were fish and prawn briyani done in Hyderabad style as well.
Service
Quick service is what you can expect here. The outlet is not air conditioned but the surrounding open air and fans are enough to keep cool. Operating hours is from 11 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Saturday and they are open for reservations and also offer catering services. Pricing is reasonable and although the lamb shank is priced slightly higher, it’s worth every penny! Rate : 9.25 out of 10

The Ais Kacang carries a heavy set of chocolate coating that has become the shops signature. The red bean, syrup and evaporated milk is prepared in advance. The delicious chocolate syrup is homemade, fresh every day. I was delighted to see the rich abundance of corn and red bean and the icing on the cake was savouring with the two ‘atap chi’! No ice was left unflavoured, that’s how precise each Ais Kacang is delivered. On the whole, Tan Kee’s Ais Kacang is a must taste by all so don’t miss out folks!

Prompt service is to be expected. It’s part of the MBJB food court so don’t expect any high end stuff, just the everyday food court atmosphere. Mr. Tan Kee walks about chatting up with his customers and taking orders by himself. Many of his customers are loyal patrons for many years! Operating hours is from 7am till 7pm. Priced reasonably at RM 3 per bowl, it’s worth every cent! Rate: 9.25 out of 10

This part of Distracted sells interesting and rare collectibles you can’t find in an ordinary shop. Lomo cameras, vintage trunk cases, an eclectic variety of greeting cards, the list just goes on. The shop is decorated in a wonderfully random and assorted manner in which their website describes as having “the sentiment of a junk shop”. Once you enter, you’ll probably take a long while to carefully check out everything in sight. You wouldn’t want to miss any items displayed!

A self-declared advocate for real chocolate, San Churro prides itself for serving 100% real cocoa butter in its chocolate treats and has no tolerance for substitutes. They offer a wide variety of coffee drinks, chocolate milkshakes, cakes and of course, the famous churros. Deep-fried till crunchy and golden brown, churros are served with an assortment of dips: dark chocolate, milk chocolate, caramel, and even vanilla/ chocolate ice-cream. If you’re coming down with a huge group, go crazy with the Churros Fiesta which comes with 18 pieces of churros and 6 pots of melted chocolate! Another way to go is to order Chocolate Tapas – a yummy platter of churros and chocolate treats, with melted chocolate and ice-cream at the side. A word of advice: Try to avoid having churros and a chocolate drink at one go because it would be an overkill of their rich chocolatey goodness. As the saying goes, too much of a good thing is bad. But if you’re able to finish both, sir/ma’am, you’re a true champion! There are a couple of San Churro outlets across Perth but it is highly recommended that you try the one in Fremantle, Western Australia. Fremantle, or Freo as the locals call it, is definitely a place to visit when you’re down in WA. With a myriad of cafes and seafood restaurants/eateries, it’s undeniably a popular spot for both locals and tourists to go to. The chocolate beverages are served in huge glasses which you can wrap your palms around and sip through the straw – just a perfect way to indulge during the day. Served in a decadent style, Koko Black also offers chocolate opera cake, vanilla panna cotta, and an assortment of petit tarts. Amongst the petit tarts, be sure to look out for the pear crème brulee which is to die for! One is also spoilt for choice at the display of handmade chocolates and truffles, and also packaged goodies. This place is frequently packed with people so be prepared to wait in line. Unlike other cafes, here you can find desserts in massive proportions. Forget dainty bitesized treats and order The Moon’s famous Chocolate Dessert Pizza which has chocolate syrup, mascarpone and walnut, topped with a scoop of ice cream. Also, be sure to ask for the availability of the new Banana, Honey and Cinammon Dessert Pizza (it might be off the menu due to banana shortage!). Don’t be fooled by the lighter meals on the menu.
