Greeneration at NTU The Greeneration event took place at Canopy K at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore on the 6th of February, 2012. The turnout for the event was fantastic and many of the students participated in the activities especially during the runway show, where students and academic professionals came to check out the event. It was evident that many enjoyed the show as hands were seen in the air, waving rhythmicly with the music from the live bands. This runway show was the first by GreenieGenie (www.greenie-genie.com). Showcased were a range of accessories from their Loveco label, which are designed exclusively by Jenny Sim, handmade and upcycled from disposed materials, like zippers from decommissioned handbags and buttons from old clothings. During the show, the models sashayed on a dedicated path through the audience, up close and personal, bold and whimsical, like the accessories showcased - one-of-a-kind, statement pieces. Two collections were paraded - the “La Belle” collection and the other which is the latest from GreenieGenie, “My Valentine”. Deeper Than Fashion Fashion accessories come in many different guises. Clothes and fashion are constantly evolving, and accessories are a great way to keep up with the trends on a budget! Deeper Than Fashion takes it a step further by catering to fashionistas who want to stand out in a crowd. OVAL SHAPED FACE STYLE - If you have long, thick, curly hair, it is advisable to have some layers so that the weight is taken out of it. - For short hair - messy style is ideal - give it a shine with a serum. - For a long straight hair - try to add volume and make it more wavy rather than flat and straight. Try not grow your hair longer than your bust line as this will seriously drag your face down.

AVOID - The main thing to consider is to not choose hairstyles that hang in your face or eyes. - Or hairstyles that just cover over your beautiful face shape.

CELEBS TO FOLLOW: Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz, Mariah Carey and Uma Thurman

ROUND SHAPED FACE STYLE - If you have medium to long curly hair; get some choppy layers through the back and the bottom of your hair to give it some shape. - Get rounded haircuts such as bobs and curly. - Get longer pieces that fall onto your face to lengthen your cheeks making them look slimmer and your cheekbones more structured.

AVOID - Chin length hair cuts as they will draw attention to the roundedness. - A rounded haircut ending at the chin or above it will add weight to your face shape and we’re sure you don’t want to look like a balloon. - Haircuts that are ended by very short bangs. Try not to give too much volume near the ears.

CELEBS TO FOLLOW: Kate Winslet, Fergie, Oprah and Keira Knightly WAVES 12

SQUARE SHAPED FACE STYLE - You may want to look for a haircut that will soften your features. Waves, thin layers and curls soften the sharp angles of square faces. - Blunt and heavy bangs will take away from the height of your face, making it appear shorter. - Try layering your long hair - If your hair is short, try this look - cut short layers to add height to your hair.

AVOID - Center parts if it is one length. - Hairstyles and haircuts that make your sides bulky, it will make your face appear wider.

CELEBS TO FOLLOW: Carmen Electra, Demi Moore, Jessica Simpson, Sandra Bullock, and Eliza Dushku

HEART SHAPED FACE STYLE - Long wavy hairstyles always look great for heart shaped faces. - Create volume around the bottom of your face, but don’t have your hair too long. Four inches below your shoulders is ample. - Thick, long hair? Ask for soft layers to soften your chin area - keep the layers cut as close to your jaw line as possible so that they can fall on to your face. - Long, curly locks will look fantastic on a heart-shaped face if you keep them soft and loose.

AVOID - Short, full styles that emphasize upper face. - Haircuts that give too much volume on top of the head. If you are a dramatic heart shape, the short full styles with tapered necklines which emphasise the upper face will make you look too heavy.

CELEBS TO FOLLOW: Reese Witherspoon, Mischa Barton, Keri Russell, Katie Holmes, and Christina Ricci

LONG SHAPED FACE STYLE -Focus on getting volume with hairstyles that have width: bobs, wavy and curly hair, and long bangs all look great.

AVOID - Too much hair length, your face will look even longer! Too much height lengthens your face. - Center parting.

CELEBS TO FOLLOW: Ashlee Simpson, Giselle Bundchen, Sarah Jessica Parker & Niki Taylor

Hey there...Diem!

We say hey to Ms Vietnam Arizona 2006, Ms Diem Thuyen, who dropped by Johor during the Miss Tourism International 2011 during last Christmas. WAVES Lifestyle Magazine gets up close and personal with the story that surrounds Ms Diem Thuyen’s life.

WAVES 14

Tell us, who is Diem Thuyen?

FEATURE

You can call me DT for short. DT is an Electro-Pop artist currently living in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Having lived in America since the age of 5, would you say you're more American than Vietnamese? I'm more of your Google in English rather than Google in Vietnamese so to speak. I consider myself a worldly person overall. I make it a habitual choice to connect with people from all over the world everyday, regardless of wherever I may physically be.

How did modeling come about?

Art and fashion has always been a part of me. I'm a fashion photographer first, then a model. I have an urge to grasp the fundamental technicalities of creating art first, before actually being the subject of art. But I love both! When I’m shooting models, my role transforms as a photographer as well as a pose director. I see the movement of my model's body as my own body moving and I would repeat this role when a fellow photographer would start shooting me.

You're quite a social bee, tell us what you do when you're not modeling?

I’m usually alone by myself thinking of the next artistic idea, picking at the minds of other artists and creative heads around the city, having munchies, or partying!

Your thoughts on being crowned Ms Vietnam Arizona in 2006?

I was absolutely thrilled because the winner received roundtrip tickets to Vietnam! So when I won I was thinking, "Vietnam! Vietnam! Vietnam!" So that summer, I was finally reunited with my homeland for the first time in 13 years - it was very emotional yet amazing! Aside from that, I got to meet and spend time with a lot of people in a short amount of time. I had loads of fun as well as heartfelt fulfillment hosting local community events, radio events, and raising money for charities because there is always somebody who needs it more than you and I do!

How was the Miss Tourism International 2011 pageant in Malaysia?

During my time in Malaysia, there was always something to do, something to see, somebody to talk to; it was nonstop work and fun all rolled into one. It was also my first Christmas and New Year’s in an Asian country in 19 years! So, overall, it was super special!

What are the top 5 must-haves in your closet?

Black tights, black pumps, sequence top, and black lace lingerie. As you can see I love black!

You'll rather be dead than caught wearing... A fanny pack of any sort.

What you have seen from traveling across borders that you love to change?

For all blocked websites to finally and freely be accessible in all Asian countries.

What’s next?

Music and fashion matrimony with audience liberation as their first born child. This year it’s just all about the music, the clothes, and the listeners. So all I can say now is be sure to follow me, DT, on facebook.com/DTbeats coming late spring for what's about to unfold next! WAVES 15 13

It’s a ll abo ut the L IPS!

We bring to you some lip care, tricks and tips on attaining that luscious lip with our easy, inexpensive lip care therapy.

The older you are, the "creamier" your lips should look. As we age, our lips thin out. Therefore, you should avoid matte and gloss and stick with a creamy lipstick. Also, watch out for dark lipsticks.

If you’re having chapped lips, try applying coconut oil, olive oil or Shea butter and avoid eating any hot, spicy or salty food until lips are cured!

For a long lasting lipstick: apply a pencil lip liner on top of the lipstick that you have applied!

Apply Vaseline cream before applying lipstick to maintain moisture to your lips.

Lip liner: Up to 3 years. Extra tip: Skip the push-up lip liners. They're expensive, tend to break and you never really know how much you have left until you run out.

Don't test lipstick on your lips. It's just plain unhygienic unless you wipe off the lipstick with a big swipe of a tissue. Even better, test lipstick on your fingertips. It's a closer fit to your lips than the back of your hand.

Lipstick: Some experts say 1 to 2 years. Others say up to 4 years. What everyone agrees on is that if it smells rancid, throw it out, it's spoiled. Extra tip: If you store lipstick in the refrigerator, it will last longer.

After applying lipstick, take your index finger between your lips and pull out. Any excess lipstick would stick on to your finger instead of your teeth! (Do make sure your fingers are clean though!)

Remember not all lipstick shades look good on everyone. Your skin colour will determine what shades are right on you. You may like a lipstick on your friend, but it may not look good on you.

What about the lifeline for keeping your lipsticks and lip liners?

Always remove your lipstick with a make-up remover or baby oil works fine too. Never wipe it away with water and tissue as you would damage the lips in the long run. WAVES 17

HEALTH

Bamboo Extract Hair Conditioner Extracts from the bamboo plant are said to make hair long and strong; bamboo is a good conditioner with plenty of silicon and protein but take note that it is not a hair miracle. Bamboo extract is present in quite a few hair products currently on the market. It's popularity as a hair strengthener and conditioning agent will probably continue to increase, as it plays well to the organic and all-natural cosmetics crowd. Just ignore any exaggerated claims of it performing miracles. Bamboo is a hardy woody grass plant that grows very quickly, and it is positively loaded with silicon and protein which are substances believed to strengthen hair as well as contribute significantly to the health of the skin and fingernails. Silicon probably functions best to stimulate skin collagen production and produce thick, shiny hair when consumed as a trace mineral in a well-balanced, healthy diet. Proteins work well when applied to the surface of the hair. Pay no attention to cosmetics company ads that proclaim bamboo extract's ability to re-grow hair over thinning or balding patches. There is no actual evidence to support such claims! In the final analysis, there is no reason to avoid hair care products with bamboo in them; but don't seek them out as though they are the most effective ones on the market or the only ones that can provide certain distinct benefits for the hair.

Being fit and having a good body is EASY!

HEALTH

Tips from Fitness Training Expert Deepa Primalani Now before you swear at me and throw this article into the bin, read on and allow me to explain myself. Fitness is an intimidating word for most. Being fit and keeping fit is difficult, time consuming and expensive. Not true. The thing to take away from this article is that it’s the simple things that can make the big difference. Fitness is not about spending hours working out at the gym with machines, running long distances or lifting heavy weights. It’s about doing the little things that keep your body and mind active and energised. Take the stairs wherever you can. Take morning or evening walks around the neighbourhood, or during lunch time at work. Carry your grocery bags. Dance the night away at a club (minus the alcohol!). You will be amazed as to how much difference a little activity can do to your body and mind. Fitness is also about proper nutrition and what you put into your body. Choose brown rice and brown bread over white rice and white bread. Choose grilled, not fried. Choose unsalted butter over margarine. These promote weight-loss and are generally much healthier

options. Once you have accomplished this and feel you want to take it to the next step, plan a fitness routine for yourself. Set aside at least 3 times a week to do any of the following: - Play a game of soccer/tennis/basketball or any sport - Visit the gym - Join a dance class (e.g. zumba, salsa, samba, bollywood, ballroom, line) - Go for a walk, run or a swim If you think you need help getting started or getting motivated, engage a Personal Trainer. Personal training is a one-hour session which focuses on the 4 main aspects of fitness; cardiovascular, strength, resistance and flexibility. A good Personal Trainer will understand your goals and fitness objectives and will customize each individual session based on your strengths, weaknesses and progress. This involves a small investment but immediately puts you on the journey and gives you firm direction towards achieving your fitness goals. As you can see, good fitness is achievable to all, regardless of age, budget, time constraint or current level of fitness. Decide now to start leading a better life and get down to making a difference immediately.

ABOUT YOUR FITNESS My name is Deepa Primalani and I am Your Fitness Trainer. Personal fitness has been a passion and a way of life for me since 1994. I am privileged to have the opportunity to enjoy it as a hobby and a career. I adopt a holistic approach towards fitness. Good personal fitness is a combination of physical fitness, psychological fitness and nutrition. As of 15 January 2012, I hold the following accreditations: • Movement Efficiency Training (MET) Course certified by the American Council on Exercise • Heartsaver (CPR) Course certified by the National Resuscitation Council • Core Foundation Course certified by FISAF Singapore • Fitness Leader and Personal Trainer certified by FISAF Singapore For more information on my services and promotion packages, please contact me at +65 98539179 or deepa@yourfitness.sg. Staying Fit in JB

COMMUNITY

By Zaki Yamani Zakaria Most people in Johor Bahru (JB) are not aware of the importance of staying fit. Just ask a friend if he or she plays sports, does gardening or goes to the gym? Some don’t even wash their own cars - yet these are simple activities that can help us stay active, as studies show that we need to exercise 3 times a week for 30 minutes to stay fit and healthy. Today, people in bustling cities such as ours seem to neglect leading a healthy lifestyle due to hectic work schedules. I too would like to engage in a regular exercise regime but my work and family commitments force me to leave out physical activities. Very few of us spend the weekend going to places such as Hutan Bandar, or the park to jog and exercise with the family. I believe that if the municipality in residential areas build parks, playgrounds or even badminton courts, there is a greater chance of people engaging in physical activities to stay fit. Although some residential areas provide a piece of land for playground, they are not well maintained, hence people shun away from it. Last year, the committee of the mosque at my residential area organised a one day futsal tournament in conjunction with Maulud Nabi. The tournament involved anyone who lived in our housing area. It was an excellent program that united the residents and allowed us to have fun via healthy sporting activity. More events of this nature should be organised in all residential areas that help bring the community together in a fun way. The “Larian Bandaraya Johor Bahru 2012” organised by Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) last February, the upcoming “Larian Hijau Bandaraya” organised by IRDA on the 14th of April 2012, “Penawar-Pengerang Run 2012” organised by KEJORA this June 2012 are example of some of the good initiatives by the local authorities. Besides that, there are several cycling clubs in town for those who love to cycle and there is also a horse riding field with qualified trainers for those who would like to try out equestrian at UTM. As for swimming enthusiasts, there are a couple of decent public swimming pools at Larkin, Taman Universiti Club house and others. More private gyms are also available in several districts in JB which is a good sign that there are more people wanting to stay fit and healthy. I would like to share some tips from my personal experience to stay fit and healthy: Wash the interior and exterior of your vehicle yourself. It will take around an hour and will break you a sweat equivalent to jogging for 20 minutes. It’s a great form of exercise and helps you save money, too! Do a massive spring cleaning of your house. Clean, mop and sweep all areas of your house and wash the bathrooms. This way, not only will you get a clean house, it will equate to sweating after a 30 to 50 minute jog. Park your car further from your office or work area. This will force you to walk more which is a form of exercise too. Use the stairs instead of the lift or escalator. Climbing stairs is an excellent form of exercise. If you can afford the time, go jogging around your housing area. Download a pedometer application on your Android or Apple smart phone and witness yourself burning calories while you jog! Good luck in attaining that healthy lifestyle and don’t forget to get your family involved too!

It’s time to WOOPIT!

RECIPE

LAKSA JOHOR

This month’s Laksa Johor recipe is inspired by the food demonstration by the chef from Palm Lounge, The Zon during the Johor Food Trail 2011. This recipe has also been tweaked with the help of www.friedchillies.com!

Ingredients for the broth:

Ingredients for the Laksa items:

Directions:

1 ½ (375ml) oil 800g mackerel/ikan parang (7-8 fishes) 150g kerisik 400ml santan 150g kerisik 300g onions (about 5) 50g garlic (about 12) 20g ginger (3 inches) 2 liters fish stock 2 liters 2 stalks lemongrass 10g belacan 4 pieces of assam keping 3 tbs chili boh 4 tbs curry powder 1 tsp rempah ratus (fenugreek, mustard seed, fennel, cumin)

1 packet spaghetti Daun kesum (Vietnamese mint) Bunga kantan (Torch Ginger) Beansprouts Green Beans Onions Cucumbers Lime Mint leaves Thai basil Sambal belacan Jeruk asin

1. Boil fish in 2 liters of water for 15-20 minutes. 2. Once boiled, debone it and blend with 500ml of the fish stock. 3. Blend onions, garlic, lemongrass, ginger, belacan with 300ml water. 4. Heat up oil, fry blended ingredients until pecah minyak 5. Add cilli and rempah with some salt, fry until a little crispy (about 5 mins) 6. Pour in stock first or else it would curdle. Close and let simmer on medium (3 to 5 mins) until it boils. 7. Stir in blended fish and assam keping 8. Add santan with ¼ cups more of water and finally kerisik. Stir to make sure the kerisik dissolves in the broth 9. Lower fire to the lowest simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Add salt to taste. 10. When assembling, start with the noodles and slowly layer it with all the vegetables and herbs.

Thanks to her experimentation in producing alternative beancurds, one can now enjoy a delightful bowl of beancurd flavoured with either sweetcorn, almond, strawberry or mango essence! This ingenious idea of altering beancurd to suit various tastebuds is worth a standing ovation. The original soya beancurd, however, is the best re-made beancurd around. Prepared to a jelly-like consistency, the silky beancurd has no sugar syrup floating on a separate layer from the beancurd. One would expect to taste a highly sweetened beancurd that has absorbed all the syrup, but prepare to be surprised. If the original beancurd is anything to go by, one is sure the flavoured versions are equally velvety options. The soya beancurd served has minimal hint of artificial sweeteners. A mouthful of beancurd will reveal a subtle soya bean natural sweetness that is not too overpowering. For a more indulgent set, opt for the chewy fried flitters best eaten dipped in the soyabean drink. The ‘beancurdsoyabean drink-flitters’ combo makes for a guiltless soya-sweet dessert anytime of the day.

Why 4 out of 5 waves? A cute, vibrant place for a late breakfast or dessert. Variety of soya flavours to choose from, including an alternative menu with Nasi Lemak. No pork, no lard. Fresh tastes with a natural sweetness and a beautiful thick soya flavour. The jelly-like beancurd is a treasured find as unlike most beancurds, Ling Jie’s does not depend on sugar syrup for the beancurd’s sweetness.

Soya Beancurd Touted for its nutritional benefits, soya bean is a common ingredient in health and beauty products. Rumour has it, soya bean also helps boost the female hormones and contributes to making your skin baby smooth. Soya bean products such as drinks and beancurd are popular as dessert or breakfast options. So after your next meal, how about a bowl of nature’s beauty enhancer; the soya beancurd?

On Short Street in the town district, Rochor Beancurd sits side by side with another beancurd shop. However, judging from the constant stream of customers, it is hard to resist getting beancurd from this quaint shop for tea time or even a late night supper. The two-storey shophouse exudes a vintage aura that is reminiscence of old Singapore. With the wooden foldable tables and plastic chairs, savouring the beancurd here is bound to bring back childhood memories of simple sweet treats. The beancurd here is made the traditional way. With a tofu-like curd floating in the sugar syrup, the best way to enjoy this classic beancurd is by mashing the beancurd with the spoon. A spoonful of mashed beancurd with the sugar syrup will reveal a distinct taste unlike the beancurd from other established shops. Whatever the secret ingredient is, the final product is a yummy bowl that has a very subtle soya taste with sweet syrup enveloping the beancurd. To complete the meal, try the youtiao dipped in soya bean milk. The youtiao served here is fluffy and less oily than most versions. Dipping the youtiao in warm soya bean milk is the perfect company for a light snack while hanging out with friends at this humble shop. For those seeking something more than soyabean products, Rochor Beancurd also offers grassjelly drinks, butterfly buns and other friend snacks all within a $2 range.

The fluffy youtiao is less oily and complements the soya bean milk. Has alternative items such as butterfly bun and egg tart. All items sold here are still under the SG$2 mark, a treasured find.

MOTIVATION

“Fill what is empty. Empty what is full”

By Ahmad Fadzli

Dear WAVES Lifestyle reader, We often fill ourselves with so many things in mind, because we want to be prepared for “the days to come”. To look good. To show that we are professionals. To show that we are capable of doing things. This burden of being prepared, leaves us with arms full, unable to receive whatever is there when we arrive. Worse, unable to receive changes that may come uninvited. It’s good to be prepared but not too prepared. It leaves you tired of over thinking, and you will not be happy when somebody criticises you and you declined any ideas that are against yours. In the end, you’ll declare to the world; “This is the worst day of my life!” and end up unhappy the whole day. Sounds rather sad, doesn’t it? For a change, when you wake up and start a new day, be sure to first clear your mind and make a decision to be open minded and adopt an accepting attitude to everything. Enter each day expecting the unexpected. Have a great April!
