The 5th Sultan Ahmad Shah International Eco Challenge
Photos by Bankai Pix
The 5th Sultan Ahmad Shah International Eco Challenge (Sastiec) held in Pulau Tioman, Pahang on the 12th of May, was a drilling marathon event that was truly a test for the fittest. The 38km course consisting of 10km on the road and 28km in the thick virgin forest of Tioman had participants from the army and police, students, seasoned adventure racers from around the country and foreign runners all the way from Kenya, Singapore, America, United Kingdom and New Zealand. The Kenyan’s dominated the race from start to end, finishing the entire course in less than three hours. Saleh Abdullah was the only Malaysian runner in the top ten, finishing in sixth place. In the international female category, Nooramelia Musa (Malaysia) was the champion, with a time of 3:32:18 seconds. Many runners were unable to finish the race due to the strenuous nature of the course but rushing through obstacles of trees, branches of thorns, dead woods, and bushes made all participants true hardcore enthusiast nonetheless.

In conjunction with National Youth Day, Johor State Youth & Sports Department organised the event alongside Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) with hopes of bringing out an estimated 100,000 youths to partake in the festivities in order to promote unity and encourage beneficial activities among youth in Malaysia. Although the target of 100,000 youths was not met, the festival did manage to bring out a large crowd and with all the youth themed activities like graffiti tagging and dance performances, JB is now once again becoming a hip and trendy town for youngsters. hen we think of a courtroom or law firm, the colours that come to mind are usually black and white, white and grey, more blacks, and more grey! Although it is no mourning session or funeral, this sombre colour palette has become “normal”, acceptable and appropriate colours when choosing clothes. The colours itself represents neutrality, professionalism as well as indicate the seriousness of matters being presented. Imagine walking into a murder-case courtroom clad à la “Ally Mc-Beal” with garish coloured outfits and short skirts. Doing so will cause nothing more than distract a judge and at the same time show clear disregard of court decorum. In the book, Law as Culture, by Kathy Laster (p.307), “a low cut floral dress conveys sexual messages that detract from the sense of the authority the woman is meant to carry as an agent of legality.” An Australian Chief Justice added that, “woman should not wear bright colours in court because it has been observed that they “did not” do as good a job as those adhering to sombre colours favoured by court dress”. Case closed! However, despite all that has been said, we do not mean that you must don sombre colours beyond the courtroom. In some firms, if there are no major presentations to make and no important clients to meet, abiding by stringent colour codes is not always necessary. Some law firms even extend the freedom allowing lawyers to dress casually on Fridays. Therefore, colour wise, a lawyer’s fashion life is not really that depressing!

WAVES FEATURE Meanwhile, what about other professionals? Doctors, for one, wear white because it’s universally recognised. Plus, it creates an image of purity and calmness. Let’s face it, most of us feel anxious when about to visit the doctor especially when feeling a little under the weather or in suspense of whatever news they will convey. So, when you see a doctor in the white coat and clear voice, the nerves tends to be a tad more calmed. There have been writings where it is found that patients feel more confident and are more able to communicate with doctors who don the professional-looking white coats. The recognition, symbolism and formality afforded by a white coat may enhance communication and facilitate the doctor-patient relationship. Lastly, there’s the common topic of office wear. What’s appropriate, you may ask? There are many articles and books that show what you should or should not wear. The saying goes that “the first impression is always the lasting impression”, so what you wear at work should mean business and not send off the wrong signals. A level of professionalism is needed when choosing office wear. By
doing so, you can get adequate respect and will be treated more seriously simply by the way you dress. From there, you, too, might be more motivated to deliver better work. Experts say that one of the biggest fashion mistakes a woman makes is to show too much cleavage! In a business environment, such fashion faux pas can be distracting and regarded as inappropriate. Women in high level positions who dressing scantily, (with plunging necklines and a tooshort miniskirt) also tends to be viewed as less competent regardless of their skills. What then, is safe and appropriate? Depending on the type of business, and the fact that women are not obligated to dress like men, tailored suits, or knee-length skirts with a sharp-looking blazer are excellent options for corporate offices. Shift dresses, button-down collared shirts and colourful silk blouses with scarves as accessories are also feminine yet office-appropriate. Soft colours in shades of light blue, lilac, pink, white and floral are often deemed appropriate for a typical office-job rather than solid or outrageously bold colours.
“A level of professionalism is needed when choosing office wear. By doing so, you can get adequate respect and will be treated more seriously simply by the way you dress.”

hat is colour? It was only in 1666 that an English scientist discovered when pure white light passes through a prism, it separates into visible colours. Thanks to Sir Isaac Newton, that knowledge about colours is now known to us all. With knowledge of colour, studies have been conducted to observe the connection between certain colours and our brain’s response towards it. For instance, the colours blue, purple and green are categorised as ‘cool’ colours which give off a calming effect but can also brings to mind feelings of sadness or indifference. Colours red, orange and yellow are regarded as ‘warm’ colours as they can evoke emotions ranging from feelings of warmth and comfort, to feelings of anger and even hostility! Colours have been used in therapy since Egyptian times. Ancient Indian and Chinese civilisations have been known to infuse colours into spiritual healing too. Now, in modern times, the colours of placebo pills have been reported to be a variable factor determining the placebo pill’s effectiveness. It was discovered that "hotcoloured" pills working better as stimulants and "coolcoloured" pills working better as depressants!

The whole logic behind colour psychology is rather simple. What it does is to apply mood altering techniques. Skeptics argue that the effects of colour vary between cultures and societies thus concluding studies based on colour psychology are mere exaggerations. However, the fact remains that colours do indeed have the capacity to affect a person’s mind even for a split second. This alone, is proof that colour can affect a person’s thoughts or emotions. Some instances of cultural nuances with regards to colour can be seen by comparing varying societies and cultures. For example, white is the colour representing death in Chinese culture, yet in Brazil, the colour is purple. Yellow is sacred to Chinese, but is a signifier of sadness in Greece or a representative of jealousy in France. Meanwhile, in North America, the colour of jealousy is not yellow but green. In studies, it is found that people from tropical countries respond more favourably to warm colours, whereas those from northern climates show preference for cooler colours. The next time you head out; have a look around you if you suddenly feel placid. Perhaps you are surrounded by ‘cool’ colours. When you’re choosing certain foods, you can also take note of how the colours may influence your choices. After all, a picture paints a thousand words doesn’t it?

WAVES FEATURE How did you get into the business realm? Since young, I knew that I would have my own business and I always shared my business ambitions with my siblings who are now running the HAZ Polaris Group with me. I was always buying and selling stuff since school days. I, along with my family members, developed and expanded the HAZ Polaris group of companies, plying the trade in different industries. What businesses are you involved in? With HAZ Polaris F&B, we hold the TuttiFrutti Sub Master Franchise for Johor. We were also one of the finalists in the Malaysian Franchise Awards 2011 for Emerging Franchisee of the year. HAZ Polaris Centre of Excellence is already an established training provider. We are involved in cattle farming and palm oil plantation with HAZ Polaris Agro. We provide supply and services under HAZ Polaris Engineering, and we have exciting trade and development plans for HAZ Polaris Properties lined up throughout the year. What hurdles have you faced? There are many hurdles along the way and I’ve learned to anticipate more as we progress. However, my biggest challenge is in developing a strong, competent teams to ensuring we pull in the same direction. Your take on TuttiFrutti’s competitions that are sprouting up? There are more than 100 TuttiFrutti outlets throughout Malaysia. In Johor itself, there are 16 outlets in operations and we have 5 more upcoming outlets. I am not entirely worried of new competition, as to me; any competition is healthy and we would do our best to ensure we are ahead of our competitors. Brand wise, we are a well-known brand across the world. Is the market lucrative? There are many opportunities in all the industries that we have ventured in. I wouldn’t say that the market is lucrative but if you do it right, the returns can be very rewarding. All it takes is hard work and dedication. What’s in store for Haz Polaris? My team is working hard to ensure HAZ Polaris Group and all HAZ Polaris subsidiaries continue to grow and excel in its respective industry and business ventures.

You mentioned ‘team’ a lot. Why is that? Well, I can’t run the business on my own. I have dedicated people in various roles performing different functions as groups. We get more result and higher work rate efficiency if we work in groups. It is important to me that we promote teamwork in the company. If given a chance to switch back to a 9 to 5 job, you will say... Well, I am still doing the regular 9 to 5 job. With the extended hours and added responsibilities, just that I’m on top of the chain now. A word to aspiring entrepreneurs... I would advise them to be fully committed, have a clear direction and know what they would like to achieve.

alk about ice cream and the usual flavours of Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry instantly comes to mind. Fans of ice cream however will want more than these. Now a familiar name to ice cream lovers in Singapore, Island Creamery has a long list of ice cream flavours for customers to choose from. The ice cream can be enjoyed either on its own, with waffles or even with brownies. With outlets around Singapore and one as far as Indonesia, Island Creamery has grown from a humble shop to a brand name. Started by Mr Stanley Kwok, the shop is a favourite among students as the ice cream is both affordable and delectable. The homemade ice cream flavours such as Teh Tarik and Nutella are mouth-watering originals. For a scoop of Nutella ice cream with waffles, one can get freshly made waffles that has a smooth yet neutral taste that does not overshadow all the unique ice cream flavours. Letting the ice cream soak through the waffles is the best way to enjoy this combination as each ice cream is the focal point when visiting Island Creamery. The nutella ice cream which has a vanillabase has thick dollops of nutella well mixed mixed into it. The hazelnut and cocoa flavours in the nutella ice cream, when left to seep into the waffles, makes for a memorable dessert like no other.

First stop was a visit to a handmade mat weaving session to get some hands on experience in the intricate process. The expedition was then brought to play some traditional games such as the kerchang, walking on stilts and shooting the sumpit! The gang had a wonderful time and the atmosphere was filled with laughter. Talk about having fun while getting work done! After the activities, we were greeted by the Director of Tourism Malaysia - Johor, Mr. Edzuar Zar who gave a quick run through of the product update followed by a presentation about the mission and vision of the park. Day 2 began with a laborious track through the forest to Takah Tinggi, crossing roped bridges and a rest stop at a breathtaking waterfall. A true workout and it was followed by a quick survival course on how to fry an egg in the wilderness and how to cook food without any modern day utensils. The eye opening Iktihar Hidup lessons were appreciated by all. After the exhausting day out, the night’s BBQ dinner was a hearty treat. WAVES 29 WAVES 33
WAVES TRAVEL
Day 3 and the fun were just about to begin as after our morning breakfast and some light warm-up exercises, the excursion was brought to the rivers for some tubing and canoeing. A perfect way to end the 3 days tour! After the water activities, lunch was served and the exhilarating product update tour came to an end. Do take note that only limited areas of the park are open for ecotourism and entry to the park requires a special permit from the Johor National Park Corporation which is available at the entrance. Getting there from Johor Bahru is easy. Take the North-South expressway heading towards Kuala Lumpur and turn off at Ayer Hitam. From Ayer Hitam take the Kluang Jemaluang road (Route 50) and continue from there to a turn-off 7km east of Kahang town (Look for the Endau-Rompin national park sign). This turn off will take you on a 56km terrain drive through palm-oil plantations and then onto old logging road which will land you at Kampung Peta, the park’s staging point. This will take approximately 2 hours. The Taman Negara Johor Endau Rompin (Selai) is undoubtedly a must visit for all you nature lovers and trekking heads! The route to the park might be a little far but believe it, you’ll most definitely be awed by the splendor as soon as you step foot there.

Underneath it all, she is a kind, loving and compassionate person. Ms Aida Atan, a single mother for the past 12years, raising her 3 beautiful teenage children. Her life went on a downhill slope after going under the knife for a major 12 hour death defying brain operation. Her children’s future depended on the success of the surgery. By the grace of God, she came out of the operating theatre safe and sound but was in a coma for 6 hours and came round only after 9 hours later. Helpless and bedridden, Aida was rotting away at home for about a month before she could move. Unable to work or make a living for her 3 children, fortunately for her and her kids, they had very supportive family members who assisted them throughout that rough ordeal. WAVES 32
A millionaire by the age of 30, Aida was an award winning real estate agent for a good 13 years. Unfortunately, her fortune was short lived as she went into several bad investments which ended up in her losing thousands of her hard earned dollars. With her increasing level of stress and anxiety due to bad business decisions, Aida went into depression which came along with acquiring several ailments such as anaemia, epilepsy, acute bronchitis, peptic ulcer and nerves disorder. Eventually, the condition of her health gradually deteriorated. She spent the rest of her left over savings on heaps of medical bills. Soon, all was gone….. The turning point in her life came during her journey towards recovery. She took those precious times to do some soul searching and found her true purpose in life. Aida wanted to help others who wanted to realise their true potential. She “Simply Believed in Herself” to bounce back up again. She started her first few small workshops and trainings for real estate agents in the year 2004. ALBUM REVIEWS BY thePiedPiper ALBUMS PROVIDED BY UNIVERSAL MUSIC SINGAPORE
nicki minaj - pink friday: roman reloaded
Nicki Minaj, love her or hate her, she's going nowhere off your speakers anytime soon. Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded is the successor to her very, very successful debut album and this new release brings about both old and new collaborations. She pretty much brings the personas of well known musicians in this album and frankly whether that works or not is up to you to judge. if you ask me well I’d pretty much term it 'interesting' to say the least. The album isn't quite hiphop or pop, it's a mix of both. Definitely not for the faint hearted nor genre specific purists but this thing is nice to bump on weird occasions.
Pixie Lott - Young Foolish Happy
Alright i’ll be honest here, I’ve never heard of Pixie Lott and when I got this and looked at the tracklist and thought maybe this won’t be that bad at all. True enough, it’s not that bad. The album features some pretty well known artists like John Legend, Stevie Wonder and Pusha T. Not all the tracks are worth the listen but there are at least some standout tracks inside. The deluxe CD is even better with 21 tracks in total so you’ll get pretty much an entire train or bus ride worth of music to listen to. All in all, being relatively unknown to me, I’d say she’s pretty good and I enjoyed listening to it.
the all american rejects - kids in the street
Kids in the street is the All American Rejects’ fourth studio album, four years after the previous release. This new release brings the same sound yet with a different feel attached to it. This time around, they wanted to walk away from the norm fans have come to be familiar with but that doesn’t mean that it’d be totally brand spanking new, no, they’re just trying to better themselves really and it works! It’s a step forward, a progression and you’ll definitely come to appreciate the tunes for each track. Trust me, this is their best work ever. Well, for now at least.
Kokua Festival
Jack Johnson and Friends - Best of Kokua Festival CD is an eco friendly one. It’s a compilation of all the Kokua festival live shows since 2004 and all proceed goes to a charity fund based in Hawaii, a foundation in support of global arts movement. It has some interesting features inside with names like Ozomatli, Damian “Jr Gong” Marley and Jack Johnson. Being a live album, this has a very nice concert feel that makes you feel that you’re right there amongst fans just chilling and enjoying the music. It’s a happy music CD and you might just enjoy it as much as I did if you decide to listen!

WAVES MOTIVATION What is personality demand? Why personality is important to you? When do we need to show our personality? Who need personality changes? How to improve your personality? Personality and self-esteem are important assets for a person. One of the great challenges faced nowadays is to decide what is the right personality that you should potray in front of the public. Well most people say that. I don’t. Dont think too much. Can we just be ourself? Why don’t we? Why are we so afraid of showing our own skin? The question is not why, it is how. How to be ME without making other people around ME uneasy? How to be ME in this situation? One’s ability to show his character while doing things that meets his current needs gives that person a self satisfaction. It’s a bonus if it's in line with the culture. If not, you decide. What are your priorities? Your own self satisfaction or you want to be in the safe zone? Pleasing others.
