King of Punjabi Pop Article Contributed by Mohan Harjani Photos by Charkula Arts The epitome of fun, Mika Singh, rocked Singapore on the 4th of February at NUSS in a rocking performance that had the crowd on their feet from the moment he graced the stage. Dance and entertainment was the order of the day from the so-called bad boy of Punjabi Pop. Like Mika himself said, “you can love me, you can hate me, but you cannot ignore me!”. Probably one of the most entertaining live performances by an Indian artist in recent memories. Mika rocks! Let’s hope he comes back for more.

Ollie the Dragon LEGOLAND Malaysia and Thistle Johor Bahru Hotel unveiled the LEGOLAND ‘Ollie the Dragon’ mascot to usher in the Year of the Dragon! The collaboration is an effort to facilitate LEGOLAND visitors in time to come with attractive packages and possible shuttle services from Thistle to LEGOLAND. As over 1 million visitors are expected, LEGOLAND is looking forward to collaborate with more hotels. Fans and enthusiasts will be glad to know that Ollie will not be the only Dragon in Johor once the park opens as they can discover the Dragon Coaster in the LEGO Kingdom, which will be among the seven zones at the park. In late December, LEGOLAND announced the park entry fees and began sales of the annual passes. The pre-opening annual passes are being sold at a special discounted price, with a validity that will take pass holders right into the entire year of 2013. These special prices are offered for a very limited period only so don’t wait too long folks! 17th International Kite Festival @ Pasir Gudang From the 15th to 19th February, over 600 contestants from Malaysia and 300 international contestants from 25 countries convened to parade their kite flying abilities to a crowd of close to 100,000 fans at Pasir Gudang. The festival was graced by the royal family and the Johor Menteri Besar Y.A.B. Dato’ Haji Abdul Ghani. The festival featured ‘stunt kite’ performances, Wau making and flying competitions, kite workshops for schools and ‘lollypop drop’ performances to name a few. Thousands who turned up were kept occupied by observing the competitions and stopping over at hundreds of shops erected at the festival that were selling food, clothing and kite making accessories.

Starhill Wine Tasting The ladies from the Japan Club of Johor and Star Hill Golf & Country Club had a closed door wine appreciation session with over 30 ardent palettes awaiting to savour and distinguish the differences between types of wine. The wines put up for tasting were from the Australian Banrock Station Family, a collection of Hardys Nottage Hill, Vina Morande and Houghton. The hostess for the session, a representative from the respective wine house did a flawless job walking everyone through the individual wines. Explaining about the colour differences, taste, smell and preservation, the audience were enlightened with wine knowledge known mostly to the experts. The finger foods served during the tasting matched the individual wines to give the outmost outcome of taste and flavour. The two hour afternoon session was well planned and a special discount was offered on the tasted wines, much to the delight of the participants.

1Malaysia Carnival The National Civics Bureau (Biro Tata Negara or BTN) of Johor from the Prime Minister’s Department worked with several NGOs and put together the 1Malaysia Carnival at Hutan Bandar MBJBT Mutiara Rini, Dataran Segamat and Kulaijaya over the past weeks. In line with the civics bureau’s objective of nurturing the spirit of patriotism among Malaysians, the carnival spread the 1Malaysia concept well with diverse activities for all races. Featuring auto shows, bike shows and bicycle shows, the carnivals were kept abuzz bombastic modifications and thumping sound systems. The carnival had a Kolam competition where Indian participants boasted their skills of designing a 1Malaysia themed artwork made from coloured rice flour, colouring competition for children, free medical checkups, voters registration booths, an aerobics dance routine, zapin and kuda kepang performances and a lion dance to usher in the Dragon Year. The Mutiara Rini carnival was officiated by Y.B Datuk Haji Abd. Aziz bin Haji Sapian from Nusajaya and Y.B Puan Tan Ah Eng from Gelang Patah. The Segamat carnival was officiated by Y.B. Datuk Haji Othman bin Jais (ADUN Buluh Kasap) and Kulaijaya carnival was attended by Y.B. Cheong Chin Liang (ADUN Bukit Batu). The events also had a prize giving ceremony for excellent students in the area and cooking supplies for underprivileged families. “The objective of the event is to further cultivate unity among Malaysians,” said Tuan Hj. Samsudin bin Samudi, the Director for BTN Johor. Mr. Ardi Putra, the Assistant Director for BTN Johor who was busy running around making sure each carnival went on as scheduled, shared with us that the carnivals was part of a six-series event to be at different districts over the months. The thousands who thronged the carnival had a fun filled time and more events are in store for Johorians. Stay tuned!

FEATURE Over 6 years in the Malaysian music scene, over 100 gigs, 3 number 1 hit songs, numerous awards and finally; a full fledged album. How is KTC feeling right now? KTC is feeling pretty good about everything. From day one, we always give thanks and are grateful for all we have done and achieved. Always coming out on top no matter what the challenge. But to be honest, we have so much more to achieve and so much more to learn. We're just getting warmed up!
Your debut album, Playground was launched in September 2011, how’s the response? So far, response has been massive in terms of feedback on the production of PLAYGROUND. Our current single, Party Animal is doing really well and the masses seem to love our music. In terms of album sales, it’s a little slow but we're working on different ways to promote and get our album sold. Given the fact that the general sales of physical albums has plunged drastically due to technology, piracy and people's mindsets, our goal is to sell as many albums as possible, get our music heard and embed the thought that Malaysian music is darn good music.
Isn’t crunk supposed to be dead? How can it be dead when "K-town Clan is in the Buildin"? We’ve got the answer in track number 2 from our album titled "Crunk Anthem". It’s also important to remember that just like Hip Hop, crunk is not just a genre, it’s a lifestyle. To top it all off, 6 years of experimenting with music styles and genres has led us to come up with K-town Clan's signature genre which we call "TWISTED CRUNK".
What does the Malaysian Hip Hop scene lack? It lacks individuals that can mix tight tracks. Mixing is so important and we're learning as well. As an example, as soon as your play a track by Swizz Beats (one of our all time favourite producers), it’s guaranteed to make you bounce. With that being said, we need more people who are interested in the art of mixing and mastering in our opinion. What Malaysia clearly does not lack are people who want to rap for a lot of the wrong reasons. Drop a track or two and act like their the dopest, illest and most swaggeristic MCs around. It’s always important to stay humble and keep learning.
Did you guys expect to win the “Thank you for existing award” (VIMA2011)? No we did not. That particular award is described as the "highest honour that can be bestowed upon musicians" and when we got the news, we were more than happy. "Thank you for existing" is such a powerful phrase and in return, we promise to keep making music and we''ll strive to go as far as we can in this musical journey. As long as we have the support of the people, we're all set.
What’s next for KTC? For 2012, we plan to reach our target of selling 15,000 copies of our album #Playground (we know, such a small amount, but we're being realistic), getting our music heard all over, have shows and video clips. Plus, Roshan Jamrock will be working on two project albums on the side and he'll be producing Young Ruff's solo album titled, "Take Over" and most importantly, holding the fort and making the country proud.
Any tour plans to the South? A KTC tour needs a good budget. In fact, since we always give our best, the budget is going to be really high. Crazy stage, crazy sound system, crazy lighting, skilled crew - you know, "Go Big or Go Home". Since we're independent and are funding ourselves 100%, we don’t have the means to tour Malaysia. But when demand is high and people really want K-Town Clan, anything can happen. So next time you get a heads up of a big show happening in Johor or Singapore, let it be known that you folks want some twisted crunk.
Final words... We've been doing this for six years and we'd like to sincerely thank those who have supported us from day one. It means a lot that we're just three small town boys with big dreams and as time goes by, those dreams are slowly materialising. Without your support, we would not be where we are today and we won’t get to where we want to get in the future. Your support is vital in pushing us forward and for that we thank you. But remember, "Value spoken is far from value applied". Support isn’t just "Bro, I love your music", "You're the best group ever", "You're my inspiration", support is also taking the extra step to buy the album and listening to what our music is all about. Introducing Singapore’s Very Own... www.facebook.com/thezozi We believe you guys met in poly. How old were you and how long has it been since you guys started? Yes, we met in poly. All of us were at the age of around 18 to 19. Those were the times when we had the 'blood of the naive' - no obligations or boundaries to try out something new. So we started out in late 2007 by winning 1st place in a talentime competition. That makes us 4 years old!
Describe your music. What's "rojak rock"? Rojak is one of the fine dishes in Singapore. You should be shot dead if you haven't tried this dish! Living in Singapore is just like a Rojak. You can find a spectrum of races here. So in this context, 'Rojak' means Life in Singapore. Simply, it’s 'Singapore Rock' or 'S-Rock'. 'Rojak Rock' can also means a good mix of different sounds and genre of music. Rock diversed itself to many subchannels, for example there are indie rock, punk rock, post rock, etc. We decided to identify ourselves as 'Rojak Rock' because we mashup sounds from reggae, indie, punk, metal and ballad. Although it is not widely regarded as an official genre, we are happy enough to have it, or best describe it as our identity.
We noticed most of your songs WAVES 14
revolve around food, but what's your favourite topic to sing about? Food is a topic that delights everyone. One motive of the band is to make people smile or laugh when they hear our songs. So that is where the media views our band as “Comical Indie Rock”. We entertain people with topics that amuse and bring joy. So not only food, our favourite topic can be about anything under the sun. (Bapok, Mat Rempit, Armpit, Make Daddy Fly, etc).
Besides the ever so famous Ozzy Osbourne, who are your inspirations? We favour our 90s local rock bands like Force Vomit, Plainsunset, Oddfellows, Tiramisu, The Boredphucks, Stoned Revivals. We even thought of paying tribute the bands of this era by covering their songs. They are the ones who really inspire us to be in a band. If they could make it happen, so do we. For our international influences, we love Bob Marley, John Lennon, Kurt Cobain and Michael Jackson.
Tell us your top 3 favourite performances. 1 - Goodbye Haji Lane Farewell Gig @ Straits Records. We didn’t expect the crowd to jump and bodysurf to our music!
2 - Baybeats 2010 @ Esplanade Powerhouse Stage. A dream come true for a Singapore band to play in such event! 3 - Reggae Night @ Hard Rock Cafe Singapore. A breakthrough gig before we eventually release our first Hilamony CD.
Congratulations on the launch of your album Hilamony II. What's the significance of the album's name? Gratitude! Hilamony is a combination of two words, 'Hilarious' and 'Harmony'. In short terms, its 'Hilamony'.
What's next for The Zozi? We plan to play more gigs, locally and around the region. We are quite well received in Malaysia. Having played a few gigs over there, why not more?
What would you guys say is the best thing about the Singaporean and Malaysian music scene? The community holds strong within the scene. Scenes in Singapore and Malaysia are identical. They throw the upmost support for local bands to rise. We should make friends with those who have the same passion and interest towards music. As an independent band, we feel the freedom to roam and venture out performing everywhere, gaining as much experience as possible.

Tell southern readers abit about Jin Hackman. Jin Hackman is a local rapper who also runs a recording studio and organises events on the side.
How did you get into the scene? I was introduced to the scene after stumbling upon an online Malaysian Hip Hop forum called The-Bazement. The-Bazement was an outlet for cats who were passionate about rapping but didn't know where to begin. It was where bedroom rappers would post up rap verses and get feedback and advice from more experienced cats. There were also keystyle (freestyling in the form of text) and audio battles going on. Good times. That was how we learned and improved and connected with other like-minded folks. That was where I met awesome dudes like Ash-G, WordsManifest and NBE.
What’s with the name? It's really just a play on the actor Gene Hackman's name. I was out of ideas. But needed a new name to replace Incognito - since this was already the name of a pretty famous acid jazz band. Then my ninja WordsManifest called me Jin Hackman one day in an attempt at a joke. I thought it was funny. So I started using it as my stage name. And the rest is history!
It’s been a while since your album “Jinius at work” dropped. What’s next? Yeah. I was working on my sophomore album, tentatively named "WHTR?". I was 80% done... and then I got tired of everything. I wasn't feeling all the songs I recorded anymore. Felt I could do way better. So I decided to go back to the drawing board and start over. My new beats and concepts are insane though! Can't wait for you guys to hear em.
Being a skilled lyricist, what’s your take on the hip 'pop' songs? I don't hate them. The catchy hip 'pop' songs can be annoying but they are there cause there's a huge demand for it. You can't expect to hear intelligent rap on the radio. If you want some good Hip Hop, try the INTERNET.
How’s the freestyle and battle scene doing? I'm not actively involved in it anymore but I know cats who are. And clearly, it's doing really well. We have guys like Zain Azrai, MC Stiff, Tactmatic and more going overseas (UK, Australia, the Philippines) to battle. They're getting some well-deserved recognition right about now. Zain even has his own t-shirts out! And apparently, we'll see dope UK rapper John Oshea wearing it in a battle soon. :)
When you're not making music, you're... Organising awesome events like Raising The Bar. That's my monthly Hip Hop gig. It's not just another Hip Hop club night though. We focus more on promoting local rappers through their live performances. You should come to KL and check it out soon! The energy at RTB is amazing. I also run a little recording studio in Damansara Perdana called Jiniusatwork. RM40 an hour. That's the most affordable rate you can get in KL.
Any tours or gigs to JB or Singapore? Not anytime soon! But if you guys are organising anything, you know who to holler.
Your word to aspiring musicians? Keep on keeping on. If making music is something you love, don't stop doing it. Don't be too caught up in the whole glamour and glitz just yet though. Focus on perfecting your craft first (if you wanna be a respectable artist, that is).
You'll rather be dead than caught wearing... Crocs. They're so ugly.

Situated at the Plaza Larkin Food Court, this is one of two stalls run by Mr Haji Saiful. Started initially at Larkin Bomba, the Kacang Pool Haji stall at Larkin Bomba has been serving this dish for 8 years. Meanwhile, Kacang Pool Haji at Plaza Larkin was opened as a second outlet 4 years ago to meet high demands. Equipped with the perfected Kacang Pool recipe, both stalls draw large crowds at peak hours. According to Mr Haji Saiful, this Mediterranean inspired dish caught his attention as it was an alternative to local dishes. Seeking to cater to local tastebuds, he sought to make the best possible Kacang Pool available to the public at an affordable price. The result is best eaten with (thoroughly cleaned, of course) fingers because it is finger-licking good. Using red beans, minced meat and a special mix of spices, the gravy is an explosion of meaty sweetness balanced out with the starchy wholesomeness of the beans. Although the delicious gravy can be eaten on its own, it tastes twice as good with the side of toast. The lightly buttered and toasted white bread is an improvement from most stalls that offers Kacang Pool with plain bread. Also differing from other stalls, Kacang Pool Haji serves the bread in a thick slab, perfect for tearing a big chunk to scoop the gravy. Like every other Kacang Pool dish, it is served with the compulsory condiments of chopped onions and chilies. The sunny-side up egg on the gravy is slightly runny but when the fresh lime is squeezed and stirred into the gravy with the condiments and the runny egg, it is suffice to say that one serving is not enough. Luckily, the outlet at Plaza Larkin is easily accessible for foodies on both sides of the Causeway! With the March holidays fast approaching, bringing the kids along to enjoy this dish will be one worthwhile yummy mess.

Inspired by Mediterranean flavours, Kacang Pool Mustafa started selling this dish far longer than most Kacang Pool stalls. Initially started by Mr Mustafa at Kampung Melayu (the former Malay Village) in 1957, the stall shifted to the former Geylang Serai Market. Currently, Kacang Pool Mustafa is located at the second floor of the newly revamped Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre. With the family recipe passed from father to son, Mr Nordin Bin Mustafa inherited the business from his father. His dedication to keep the stall going is done by ensuring that all the ingredients are fresh. Mr Nordin now runs the stall and continues to serve loyal customers who keep coming back for more. The Kacang Pool has earned a steady fan base. Spotted among the crowds at Geylang Serai Market & Food Centre were fans of Kacang Pool Mustafa who highlighted the flexibility of this dish. For those who prefer a stronger taste, white pepper shakers and salt shakers are available at the stall for making alterations to suit your personal preference. The Kacang Pool here also stays true to its name by relying only on the beans to bring out the flavor of the gravy. The gravy is smooth with the thickness from only the beans apparent in each mouthful. Each serving comes with two thick slices of bread, a sunny-side up egg, two lime halves, fresh chilies and chopped onions. Unlike its Johor Bahru counterpart, the bread is not buttered or toasted. By using French Loaf instead of plain white bread, the dish stands out for its harmony in taste. KUIH CARA BERGULA This month’s delectable recipes are contributed by Asiah Arshad, a Malaysian expat and an ardent follower of WAVES Lifestyle magazine abroad! Thank you. Ingredients: 1 cup thick coconut milk 2 cups plain flour 6 pieces of pandan leaves (blend and extract its juice) 1 tsp salt 1 egg 1 cup of water at room temperature Little oil to grease the mould Some sugar to sprinkle on top the kuih Kuih mould
Directions: 1. Blend well the coconut milk, flour, pandan juice, salt, egg and water. Add more water if necessary. 2. Heat the mould and grease it with little oil. Once the mould is hot enough, pour some of the kuih batter on it and sprinkle with a teaspoon of sugar on each kuih. (Make sure you do not pour the batter until full). 3. Cook for about 6 minutes on medium flame. 4. When the kuih appears to be caramelised, remove and serve warm.
PRAWN SAMBAL PETAI (Stinky beans) Ingredients: 4 tbsp of oil 4 garlic cloves 1 tbsp tomato sauce 1 big onion 6 pieces of dried red chillies (pre-soak in hot water). ½ kilo large prawns (de-vein and remove skin) 10 pieces of petai – sliced Water Salt and sugar to taste Seasoning
Directions: 1. Blend the onion, garlic and dried chillies until fine. Then heat oil and sauté the blended items until aroma. 2. Then add in the tomato sauce and the petai and stir until oil appears. 3. Now add some salt, sugar, seasoning and water. Mix well and let it cook for about 2 minutes and then add the prawns and mix well. Let it cook until prawns turn pink. 4. Serve hot with plain rice.

A CALL ANSWERED By Maisarah To ease the burden of households with an income of RM3,000 and below, the Malaysian government came up with a ‘Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M)’ scheme whereby a onetime payment of RM500 will be awarded to those found eligible. The payment is awarded to the head of each family under the stipulation that he or she is married, or a single parent, or a bachelor with a heavy overhead or golden citizens. With the increasing cost of living in Johor Bahru, the BR1M scheme received an overwhelming response, so much that the submission dateline has been extended. To-date, more than 60% of submitted applications have been approved and disbursement has begun in stages. At a recent BR1M event, Pulai MP YB Datuk Nur Jazlan stated that, “The people truly appreciated the BR1M Scheme as it is a genuine effort to help ease their burden”. Skeptics have said that perhaps this is an effort too late but regardless, any gesture to ease the livelihood of the people has to be embraced with open arms. HELLO JORDAN! Our reader, Sivaneswary Palanibilo decided to share with us her Middle East travelling experience to Jordan which is nestled between Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Israel. Jordan is rich in its historical and ancient preservation, but the most famous spots to visit there is Amman, i.e. the capital, Petra, the famous Dead Sea and Aqaba. Read on as she shares with us valuable information and tips. Read on to find out how her trip went! Petra also known as the Red Rose City was our first location to explore. It is indeed a world’s wonder as this amazing and unique city has intricate carvings and formation of rocks dating more than 2,000 years ago. Entrance to the city is through the SIQ which is a narrow gorge and over 1km in length, soaring up to 80m of high cliffs. Just walking through the SIQ is an experience by itself. The colours and formations of the rocks are simply dazzling and as we reached the end of the SIQ, we caught the first glimpse of Al-Khazneh (Treasury) and that was a very special moment. There are hundreds of elaborate rock-cut tombs with intricate carvings - unlike the houses, which were destroyed mostly by earthquakes. The tombs were carved to last throughout the afterlife and 500 have survived. It can be bewitching as you file past their dark openings. There is also a massive Nabataean-built, Roman-style theatre, which could seat 3,000 people. The best time to visit is in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the daytime temperatures aren't too extreme. April is probably the best month, when temperatures are warm and wildflowers are in bloom. I also suggest to embark on a 5 to 7 days trips to Jordan as there a lot to see and explore.
Trip tips: Wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat to protect you from the sun, and carry plenty of drinking water. If you don’t want to walk, you can hire a horse or a horsedrawn carriage to take you through the one kilometer SIQ. Are you an ancient art lover? Then I recommend you to put up a night at Petra. Plenty of hotels reachable by walking distance in Red Rose City.
Petra After a very long day at Petra, we called it a day. Next morning, we drove to the famed Dead Sea. The Jordan Rift valley is very dramatic, beautifully landscaped and over 400m below sea level. Considered as the lowest point on the face of the earth, this vast stretch of water receives a number of incoming rivers, including the River Jordan. Once the water reaches the Dead Sea, they are land-locked and have nowhere to go, so they evaporate, leaving behind a dense, rich, cocktail of salts and minerals that supply industry, agriculture and medicine with some of its finest products. Being rich in minerals, warm, soothing and super salty (10 times saltier than sea water) it is no wonder people flock here. Upon reaching, I floated, soaked up in their healthy mineral water, applied mud and took a dip in salt water again and immediately felt my skin smooth, silky and soft as a baby’s skin! This is one experience not to be missed.

Trip tips: You can only float and can’t swim here, so take a memorable snap like reading a book! Mud will be provided. Enjoy yourself floating and enjoy the scenery as the Dead Sea is flanked by mountains of East and Jerusalem on West.

If you have cuts or grazes, it may sting as soon as you touch the salt water. So lookout for that!
If you are a snorkeling and scuba diving person, then I strongly recommend you to travel to Aqaba to enjoy Jordan’s splendid Red Sea asset. The temperate climate and gentle water currents have created a perfect environment for the growth of corals and a teeming plethora of marine life. Here you can swim with friendly sea turtles and dolphins as they dart amongst the schools of multi-colored fish. Night dives reveal the nocturnal sea creatures, crabs, lobsters and shrimp, as they search for a midnight snack. Next stop was to the capital, Amman. It is a fascinating city with a unique blend of old and new. I found plenty of restaurants, traditional coffee shops and souvenir art galleries. Amman Citadel is ideally situated on a hilly area between the desert and the fertile Jordan Valley. I enjoyed an amazing view of the city from Citadel.

Trip tips: Visit Amman's Roman Amphitheatre: But do watch out for the very steep steps and there is no handle to climb up and down! Try Jordan's specialty, Mansaf, which is a delicious lamb and rice meal and typically eaten with one's hands. One of Amman’s most famous local foods restaurant is Hashem. It is located in downtown Amman, make sure you eat chick peabased foods such as falafel, hummus, and fuul for reasonable price.
Finally, after soaking up the wealth of knowledge in Jordan, I returned with pleasant memories and hope to be back again with more travelling escapades and tips.

5 Easy Ways to Handle Stress By Ahmad Fadzli One of the most significant problems faced by most Malaysians is how to handle stress. You have to admit that we are living in a very multi-tasking, competitive, hi-tech, challenging (you name it all!) world. Are you experiencing chest pain? Do you have memory problems? These are some of the signs among many others.
Talk! Don't hold all your feelings within! Discuss your stressful feelings with someone you trust and who are willing to listen without being judgmental or pressuring you to their own point of view. To the listeners, don’t argue your points with a stressed out person. Trust me, they know the solutions for their problems, but they just want you to listen.
Get away Sometimes a change, however small, can do wonders for your spirit. Forget all your worries and problems for a while and escape (not run away though)! Go somewhere new for a few hours, or a few days if you can afford to. If not, it may be helpful just to "get away" to a warm, soothing bath for a little while and you would be instantly rejuvenated.
Socialise Spend time with family and friends for love and support. Don't be afraid to enjoy yourself! Appreciate friendship and let others know you care about them, too.
Exercise Exercise will keep you centred. Plain and simple – exercise reduces stress and the negative reactions to stress. Even a 5 minute walk can help you feel a lot calmer.
Breath When you feel like shouting at someone (that is a stress sign my friend), don’t. Take a deep breath and you’ll be amazed on the wonders of this step. These steps are cost effective to free. Motivate yourself and you can do it! Always be happy whilst achieving your dreams.
