Besides that, there were also multiple health exhibitions lining the lobby of Regency Hospital with performances and art therapies ran by students of Sekolah Seni Malaysia just beside the entrance of the lobby. The Johor tourism industry players have urged the Federal Government and MOTAC to immediately stop and take action on these irresponsible groups of guides in order to not hurt tarnish the industry. All industry players including the tourist guides, operators, agencies and authorities should understand the constraints at the CIQ complexes at the Causeway and the Second Link. The infrastructure at CIQ was built 20 years ago and the capacity today has increased by many folds. Johor Tourism Association (JTA) has suggested implementing Tourist Ambassadors to welcome and assist in coordinating tourists who are crossing the border from Singapore to Malaysia through the Causeway or Second Link. Tourist guides and operators are also urged to consider alternative routes when bringing in their tourist groups, especially if Johor is not part of their itinerary because as border crossings are concerned, many other people such as the working class and domestic tourists also frequent the checkpoints. - by Harish Mustak TI

The Chapter’s ‘Feed the Hungry 2019’ Project Rolled out from Ramada Meridin Hoteliers of MAH Johor Chapter ensures no one is left in hunger

he Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Johor Chapter’s 2019 collaborated with Kechara Soup Kitchen for their CSR Project to ‘Feed the Hungry’ beginning in March, starting from Ramada Meridin Hotel with 150 packed hot food before trailing to nine more hotels to follow suit till the end of the year. “Times are bad and we have less response from donors to continue contributing hot, packed food to the homeless that we serve at the back streets of the city. We are grateful to the hotels for coming to our aid for the third consecutive year,” said Merlin Hoo, of Kechara Soup Kitchen Johor Bahru. The Chairman of MAH Johor Chapter is grateful that their member hotels are continuing to rally forward to support MAH in its CSR initiatives, which in turn benefits those in need. After Ramada Meridin, the hotels that will contribute 150 packs of food to the homeless every Saturday in a month, are Somerset Medini Puteri Harbour (April), Pulai Springs Resort (May), Hotel Granada (June), Le Grandeur Palm Resort (July), New York Hotel (August), Amari Johor Bahru (September), Renaissance Johor Bahru Hotel

Cerebral Palsy Johor to Close?

t has been higlighted numerous times that Cerebral Palsy Johor (CPJ) formerly known as the Spastic Children’s Association of Johor is in deficit for the past 4 years. A wish list & Itemised Wish List has been posted and shared many times on social media seeking sponsorship/donations from individuals or corporate companies to use their CSR programmes to help the association, but to date, the amount received could not match the operating cost. CPJ has embarked on a few sustainable projects as part of of its funding plans such as

chilli fertigation, rental of hall and telcos, Annual Charity Food & Funfair, hydroponic vegetables, solar energy, stingless bee project and Charity Fishing Competition. The association currently seeks the public’s support on the sale of coupons for its Charity Food & Funfair to be held on 27th July 2019 and sponsorship for a Golf Event on 20th August 2019. After 52 years of providing the much needed service to cp childen and fullfilling their parents’ high expectations and hope, and at the same time struggling with persistent shortage of funds/

deficit budget, the crunch was felt when they could not pay the staffs’ salaries for the month of March and contemplated taking drastic action to “rest” the school. It was at that point that the State Government and the association’s Royal Patron came to their rescue to tide them over but only for the next two (2) months. What about the rest of the year? One of the strategies in appealing to the public is by “funding a child”. The cost of financing a child is reflected in the cost of emoluments of the teachers’ and rehab staffs which

amounts to around RM900,000.00 per year. By sponsoring a child at a cost of RM3,500.00 each, the public would be able to offset part of the cost. This project of sponsoring a cp child would contribute towards fulfilling part of the deficit. What CPJ is currently facing is a real crisis. If CPJ cannot raise RM1.8 million yearly (operating cost), then they would have no other choice but to permanently “rest” the association. Cerebral Palsy Johor cares and provides education and services for children and adults with Cerebral Palsy – a disorder

caused by damage to the brain. There are about 130 children and adults with cerebral palsy housed at the association, and they are all provided with special education, rehabilitation skill training (vocational) and sheltered workshop for the adults. Would you let this association to permanently close its door after all these years of service? We certainly hope not. No Change for Johor Water Tariff Rates

ohor International Trade, Investment and Utilities Committee Chairman, Jimmy Puah Wee Tse stated that Johor will not be increasing its water tariffs anytime soon. He told reporters at the International Chamber Networking Meeting at Big Wheel Seedbank near Sunway Iskandar that the last time the state government raised the tariffs was in 2016 and it was among the highest in the whole

country. Puah mentioned that the move to increase tariffs was to standardise rates throughout the nation. Puah also highlighted the recent economic growth in Johor, “Generally, Malaysia’s economy recorded a respectable growth of 4.8% in 2018 and projected to grow 4.9% in 2019. The Johor economy has grown 5% in 2018 and is projected to grow at a rate of 5.2%

for the year of 2019.” “I believe the Johor government can work with everyone here to build a quality environment so that we can retain the necessary work force to develop the state. In Johor, traditionally, we have been focusing on manufacturing and logistics industries, but we cannot rely on this alone,” said Puah and believes that there has to be a shift in the industrial direction and vision in Johor.

Statistics from MIDA says that in Johor for the year 2018, total manufacturing growth is RM30.5bil whereby RM24bil is FDI and RM6.5bil is DDI. Conserving the Environment PTP and JPA volunteers plant 600 mangrove saplings in Tanjung Adang coastal area

ort of Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP), a member of MMC Group, together with Johor Port Authority (JPA) and Kelab Alami Mukim Tanjung Kupang continue to reinforce its commitment in managing the local ecosystem by collaborating in the planting of 600 mangrove saplings in Tanjung Adang coastal area near Gelang Patah, Johor. About 100 volunteers, consisting of staff from PTP and JPA as well as volunteers from Kelab Alami including Dr. Serina Rahman and various other government agencies took part in the mangrove tree planting event that aims to help in environmental conservation and to build a path for the natural environment sustainability, especially around the area where PTP and JPA operate. he Johor Empowerment of Intellectual Women Association or better known as JEIWA had collaborated with its strategic partners at Bandar Seri Alam to launch Edulife 2019 programme with a tagline of ‘Bersama Membawa Cahaya Pendidikan’, literally translating as ‘Illuminating Knowledge Together’ as its effort to create opportunities for every children to be well-equipped in school. The Edulife 2019 is focusing on distributing school supplies and the priority goes to orphans under the care of victims of domestic abuse. Recipients would be in JEIWA’s database to keep them under their continuous care and to ensure they get the opportunities provided by the association. The event was graced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maszlee Malik that has been supportive in creating the culture of knowledge empowered by empathy, joy and mutual respect. A total fund of RM34,790 was raised by JEIWA, of which RM10,000 was contributed by UMLand and TNB each. This

Joining the resort in 2015, Jef enjoys working with and through people; the ability to coerce or motivate people with a strong belief in teamwork. Therefore, as a leader in his hotel/resort he adopts a participative style instead of an authoritative style with his department heads as it is tried and tested that to be productive, one has to empower. Under his leadership, Le Grandeur in Palm Resort, 54-hole golf on one side and a 330 deluxe-resort hotel on the other; while bridged by a dedicated centre for sports, leisure and recreation resort is on track in meeting customer expectations in providing the best service and memorable experience.

How did you get involved in the hospitality industry?

It was actually by accident (laughs). I was in the construction industry and my cousin invited me to join her for a hospitality seminar in Switzerland. I thought why not and was captivated by the things I heard about the hospitality industry. Comparatively, in the construction industry, there is mud, dirt and sweaty clothes while the hotel industry was suits and ties with fine dining (laughs) so yes, that really motivated my decision. So I spoke to my father and convinced him to pay for my studies. This was in 1983 so it was not really expensive and I was also able to work part time to earn some income. I tried to be a waiter but in Switzerland, you must know either French or German to be a waiter so I did the dishes instead and learned French. Long story short, three years from there, I graduated with a diploma and with good hotel experience.

Tell us more about the facilities available at the resort

We are a 330-roomed, 800-acre resort of lush, rolling hill-scape within 5 minutes

Is the golfing industry gaining traction among the youths?

I would say yes and no. There has been a decline for sure but there has also been an effort to kindle the interest among the youth by the government and some organisations which has been working as well. With Tiger Woods winning, we might see more interest definitely.

Is AirBnb a worry for you?

My personal opinion is that AirBnb is more worrying for consumers than us. For the hoteliers, we are used to competition so it is nothing new. I’m not talking about AirBnb the company, but the individuals who are ‘renting’ out their accommodation. There is no safety regulation, cleanliness is questionable and it’s affecting the neighbourhood. Lately we’ve heard about how the accommodation has been used for vice activities so unless there are regulations put in place, it should be considered as a

What makes Le Grandeur stand out against the competition?

Our unique selling proposition is our huge space (laughs). We have the space to accommodate big team building activities with many leisurely games to choose from and that is a big attraction by itself. Our 54-hole golf course is the preferred choice for Professional Golf Malaysia (PGM) as we have been hosting their tournaments since 2015. The standards of our golf courses speak for themselves.

What do you think about the tourism industr y as a whole?

It can be better. On a national level, there has been a lot of bad publicities regarding our country and this affects the tourism industry as visitors and investors alike become worried. On the global front, the economy as a whole is facing a slowdown as well. Apart from that, our neighbours have been working very hard to promote their countries as the preferred destinations and perhaps we have taken things too lightly under the presumption that we will be the choice for tourists. For example, there is no visa fee for tourists from China heading to Thailand. So you can see how competitive our neighbours are in getting the visitors. Our government officials must be more aggressive when they participate in international travel fairs. Many Japanese and Korean travellers know other parts of

Malaysia but many of them have not even heard of Johor at all. Apart from promoting the theme parks, the natural attractions of Johor, which is the greenery, the culture and heritage is a big selling point that is not being sold.

What does Jef do in his free time? After work, if the weather is nice, I go for a jog. Weekends I spend time with my family when I’m not golfing (laughs). When you have a 54-hole golf course right here, how can I not play the game! If there is one thing that you would like to change in the hospitality industry, what would it be?

I would like to change the question first (laughs). I rather say the one thing that I would like to see remain in the hospitality industry is the human factor. Advancement in technology is so vast and in China you have hotels with robots but you can never out do the personal element. The human touch starts from the welcoming to the departure and there are no substitutes to that. TI

ow many of you are experiencing Anxiety and/ or Depression but you stay silent for the fear of being judged? I was one of them. When I was in my early 20s, I had to go to a psychiatric. After I registered my name, I left and didn’t wait for my name to be called. There was a huge shame in me. I felt like I was being judged by the clinic staffs even though I knew the judgement came from myself. In my mind, the voice was loud, “look at you, so young to get depressed”.

I left because I couldn’t handle the shame. 10 years later (circa 2011-2012), I took some courage and walked into a psychiatric department and had my first counselling session with the psychiatrist. The diagnosis was Excessive Anxiety. I healed from it within three months with minimum intake of medication. Suppose I didn’t have that shame when I walked into the psychiatric department in 2001? If you feel the same, have you asked yourself why?

It’s time to talk about Mental Illnesses openly To help individuals and society heal from mental illness is to accept that there is nothing negative from experiencing these painful illnesses. What we want is to let individuals who suffer from these challenges to speak up and connect with the society. In return, that society (family, friends, organisations, workplace and etc) must communicate back with support and understanding. Remember that the nature of anxiety and depression is isolation. That is

why speaking up gives us potential healing. It creates a momentum to neutralise the pain carried by anxiety and depression. We are living in a tribal and collective field. Avoid being judgemental because it can be felt heavily on individuals. One million people that have the same judgement are equal to one million judgments. Therefore, it is difficult for an individual to heal when he/she is being judged for experiencing a chemical imbalance in the brain. TI

Honing in on the Horseshoe Crab

orseshoe crabs are prehistoric animals that existed on earth well before the dinosaurs. They have 10 legs and a hard exoskeleton (shell), and while they look like ancient crabs, they are actually more closely related to spiders and scorpions. The ‘horseshoe’ in its name actually comes from the shape of its head: U-shaped like a horse’s shoe. Horseshoe crabs moult (shed) their shells about 6 times before they reach full adult size. Female horseshoe crabs are 1/3 bigger than males. These creatures have a long (venom-free) sharp tail that it uses to flip itself over if necessary. We have at least 2 species of horseshoe crabs in Johor, namely the Coastal Horseshoe Crab (Tachypleus gigas) and the Mangrove Horseshoe

exual Harassment is an ongoing problem that companies face, and today, more cases have been brought forward to the public spotlight. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s discuss further with some frequently asked questions about sexual harassment in the workplace. Q8. How should I carry out the investigation? A: It should be stressed that a case of sexual harassment is a sensitive issue. Employers s ho u l d take care to respect the sensitivities of both the victim and accused. Both should be treated with respect as the process can be traumatising. Should the company notice signs of distress, think about referring either party to an external counsellor. Q9. What action can I take against a person accused of sexual harassment? A: If after an investigation, show cause letter and a domestic inquiry has been carried out, the company may take disciplinary action according to S.81C EA 1955 which mirrors S.14 EA 1955 allowing the employer to terminate the employee, and the employer may also downgrade the employee, suspend without pay, or any other lesser punishment the employer feels fit to impose. Do not forget to inform the victim of the conclusion of the company. Q10. How do I educate my employees on this issue? A: As an employer you have the implied obligation of providing a safe and conducive working environment. To educate your employees, you can hold training sessions to explain to the employees what constitutes sexual

harassment, how they need to be aware of their actions and the proper procedure in initiating a complaint as well as how the company will react. You should also think of having a proper sexual harassment policy which informs employees of the non-tolerance of the employer towards sexual harassment. It should also list down the types of actions that constitute sexual harassment and state the complaint procedure for example to whom the complaint should be reported to. It should also have the time frame in which the employer will take to investigate and get a conclusion. Q11. What steps can a victim take in a case of sexual harassment? A: The victim will need to be brave and tell the harasser firmly that they want the behaviour to stop. Having a witness present or doing so via email would be better. If the harassment continues, follow the policy of the company and bring the matter up to the person in charge. Victims should record the details of when, where and how the incidents occur. Having dates, times, locations and details of what was said and done and the name of any witnesses will help the investigation by the company to ensure appropriate action can be taken based on solid evidence. Conclusion As an employer, always remember to remain neutral. Both the victim and the accused have rights and the duty of the employer is to investigate cases without prejudice. Understand that sometimes the situation may just be a case of office romance gone sour or a situation that is more serious. TI

Does the Upcycle Still Have Legs?

our months ago, if someone were to say the global stock market will return to bull in the 1H of 2019, people would say he is insane. But guess what? At the time of writing, the US stock market is nearing records and the Wall Street’s ‘fear index’ tumbles to 6-month low. So, does the upcycle still have legs? Let’s discuss. Undeniably, the global economy and the stock market performance are much dependent on the US and China. When the US and China sneeze, the World catches a cold! Therefore, are the world’s two largest economies doing fine now? Let us start with the US. There are a few good references showing that the US economy is doing fine. First, while the US consumer spending’ accounts for over two-thirds of its economy, the household debt to GDP has been falling steadily. This either means the US GDP is growing, or the household debt is reducing. Either scenario is a good sign. Second, debt servicing as a percentage of disposable income has dropped to the lowest levels in decades. It was 13% in 2007 and 9.8% in 2018. I believe it’s relevant to the rising wages and falling unemployment

rate. In addition, owing to low interest rate, it makes the debt servicing fall too. Yields on 10-year bonds, which are a benchmark for bank loans, are now lingering at around 2.5%. These figures suggest that the US consumer spending is likely to be sustainable. What about China? It is not as bad as many thought. First, according to China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the manufacturing PMI has recovered from 49.2 in February to 50.5 in March. Likewise, the Caixin China General Manufacturing PMI has showed improvement from February to March. The recovered manufacturing activity implies that the domestic demand has turned more optimistic. Furthermore, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said a US-China trade agreement would go “way beyond” previous efforts to open China’s market to US firms, indicating the optimism that the trade talks would end favourably in the near term. Locally, the Malaysia Composite Index (FBMKLCI) is rather depressing compared to other countries. According to a MIDF Research’s fund flow report in April 2019, on a year-to-date (YTD) basis, foreign funds have sold RM1.76 billion net of local equities. Do not

be alarmed, because firstly, foreign funds exit with all kinds of reasons. Secondly, Malaysia’s GDP forecast for 2019 remains between 4.64.8%, which is still decent. Thirdly, the revival of ECRL with much lower cost has showed the government is determined to build infrastructure with strong budget control, which would boost the economy. Lastly, let us not forget that the crude oil price has now stood at above USD60 per barrel, which is good for Malaysia’s economy. After seeing all the positive signs, let us look at our portfolio on 15th April 2019:

The new wing is expected to come into completion by SUKMA 2020 PJ Puteri Specialist Hospital held a topping-off ceremony to mark the new wing’s construction that has reached its highest level and is entering its final phase of finishing (marking 60% of completion). The wing’s groundbreaking ceremony was first held back in 2012 and the construction begun at 2014 before the project was put on halt for a while. It resumed again at the end quarter of 2017. President and CEO of Johor Corporation and Chairman of KPJ Healthcare Berhad apologised in advance to the locals and the neighbourhood around the construction site as they may need to work on the building even at night after they get permission from the authority. The RM120 million, 9-storey hospital would add 100 extra beds making it 240 beds in total. As of now, KPJ Puteri Specialist has 140 beds with 35 resident doctors, 5 sessional specialists and 9 visiting specialists. The new wing would also house 20 specialists’ clinics in line with the increased number of beds. Incoming specialists for the new wing

As there are recent cases where home buyers were being scammed by fake agencies in the state, the fair helped potential buyers to stay informed and inquire directly on anything they need to know about Rumah Mampu Biaya (RMB) Johor, an affordable housing effort by the state government. Sr. Haji Dzulkefy in his speech warned

buyers to stay vigilant of scams on home ownership agents that are still at large. Some of them were already identified and are waiting to be arrested while a few are still out and about.
