the region.” The tourism sector were boosted with the soft opening of R&F Mall and Capri by Fraser Residence in the Johor Bahru city centre with X PARK in Sunway Iskandar and LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort’s Sea Life while Johor Premium Outlet’s (JPO) 3rd Phase launched in Q1 2019. To date, local investors had contributed 62% to the total cumulative committed investments while the balance 38% was contributed by foreign investors. The top five countries with the highest cumulative committed investments from 2006 to March 2019 are China, Singapore, USA, Japan, and Spain. Liow Cai Tung, Chairman of Tourism and Women, Family and Community Development said in her speech citing their research on working mothers in the Kota Iskandar area where the mothers has to inconveniently pump milk at the praying room, pantry and even in their cars. The establishment of the Mama Friendly room would be much more accommodating

Liow also calls for more departments, employers, corporations and agencies from both private and government sectors to join in the effort to establish a nursing room as well as being flexible with the time as it takes around 30 minutes to complete one pumping session. “ The estimated budget to build Mama Friendly room is around RM20k and some vacant rooms in the workplace premises could also be refurbished into nursing rooms”, Liow fur ther explained.

In the launching ceremony, 14 bodies comprising private companies, government agencies and nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) had s i gn e d a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in which their premises would set up nursing rooms within one year starting from May 2019 until May 2020. The Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Johor Chapter are among the several NGOs that signed up. A Feast for Kulai’s Underprivileged Children Le Grandeur Palm Resort hosts breaking fast event for the fifth year

For the fifth year running, Le Grandeur Palm Resort opened their doors to host 115 underprivileged children, orphans, and children from the Rohingya committee from the Kulai area for a breaking fast feast. The event was organised by IKRAM Johor, in collaboration with Yayasan Sejahtera Kulai and Econsave, and officiated by Hj Tosrin bin Jarvanthi,

ADUN Bukit Permai. It was the first time the children from the Rohingya community were invited to the event. The children from MyCare Centre for Rohingya Education in Kulai in turn wanted to do a performance as a way of showing their appreciation. According to Nor Shahidatul Akma, the headmistress of the school, the students had little time to prepare but were nonetheless very excited to put up a performance for the audience. news PTPTN Debts Preventing Happy Trails Ministers rubbish claims to re-impose the travel bans on PTPTN borrowers who can’t afford to repay student loans

In recent news, borrowers have been called out to commit themselves to paying back their loans. The government has given ample of notice and workarounds for the matter at hand. PTPTN chairman Wan Saiful Wan Jan was reported earlier to have said that reimposing the travel ban on errant borrowers was among the ideas received during PTPTN’s ongoing public engagement sessions. However, Wan Saiful said Putrajaya would have the final say on whether to impose the ban, which he

added was one of the most effective means of getting defaulters to service their loans. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail says restricting overseas travel against borrowers who fail to repay loans from the National Higher Education F u n d Corporation (PTPTN) is not appropriate and should be reviewed. She said the government has yet to make any decision on the matter and the proposed restriction should be reviewed. “We haven’t made

any decision. When did we discuss it? PTPTN has provided space and opportunities for the students to pursue higher studies but there are a handful who did not service their PTPTN study loans (after completing their studies)”. Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman MP of Muar says he does not agree to blacklist National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan defaulters. “I disagree with the policy to blacklist those who took up PTPTN loans, who are unemployed graduates or who are not earning a decent salary,” he said. - by Harish Mustak TI

PTP Inks Agreement with SOCSO on Disability Management

The agreement was sealed as part of PTP-SOCSO’s RTW and Back Injury Protection and Rehabilitation programme designed to help insured employees suffering from workrelated injury or invalidity to be rehabilitated as soon as possible in order for them to return to work. The RTW and Back Injury Protection and Rehabilitation programme takes a proactive approach in helping the insured

person with injuries or diseases, providing the opportunity to resume safe working activities as soon as it’s medically possible. Speaking after the signing event, SOCSO’s Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohammed Azman bin Dato’ Aziz Mohammed said the RTW programme was first introduced in 2007. Since the RTW Programme started, a total of 23,295 workers have been successfully rehabilitated and were able to go back to work. In fact, the RTW Programme has been recognised as an International Best Practice and is a good example of what SOCSO does to provide a better outreach and social protection to all workers as well as put into practise the concept of disability management among employers.

“The RTW Programme is a comprehensive systematic disability case management programme which provides opportunity for workers to resume employment and reintegrated back into the society. Both Malaysian Mums and Dads Struggle with Flexibility and Poor Parental Leave Policies Working parents - not just mothers are desperate for more support to better manage work and family responsibilities, as 69% plan to job hunt in the next 12 months

adeleine M. Kunin says, Every time a woman leaves the workforce is because she can’t find or afford childcare, or she can’t work out a flexible arrangement with her boss, or she has no paid maternity leave, her family’s income falls down a notch. S i m u l t a n e o u s l y, n a t i o n a l productivity numbers decline. Over half of Malaysian mums admit they have missed out on career opportunities because of their decision to have a child, and continually face workplace challenges that make it harder for them to get ahead professionally. Al t h o u g h 5 5 % o f Malaysian employees say they do have flexible working arrangements in some capacity, a whopping 82% of women and 75% of men still report the need for greater flexibility to effectively manage their home and work lives. This lack of balance is forcing 72% of women and 63% of men to search for a new job over the next 12 months. This is according to new research by Monster. com, which surveyed over 2,000 professionals across Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore to understand the unique challenges and barriers both men and women face at work, particularly with regards to parental leave and work-life balance. This survey was conducted for the third consecutive year as part of the #SheMakesItWork campaign in celebration and support of mothers in the workforce, or returning to work after having children. When asked why mothers quit their jobs, 67% of Malaysian men said it’s because women desire to spend more time with their families, compared to 56% of women who said the same. In fact, most women said they believe mothers leave their jobs

due to a lack of flexibility (66%), indicating that current policies around flexible working don’t provide the support needed. Malaysian men are also quite concerned about the wellbeing of their families. 67% of men said they only return to work for financial reasons, with 49% worrying about who is looking after their children, and 51% are concerned with how they can better use flexible working options. Interestingly, while 55% of women say they have missed out on career opportunities due to having a family, 46% of Malaysian men feel the same way. B o t h Malaysian mums and

d a d w o r r y (45%) about how they will make the most of their flexible working arrangements to effectively balance work and home, and 35% don’t believe current parental leave policies are sufficient for modern working parents. “ A s both men and women take on responsibilities a s breadwinners, they also share more parental obligations. Dads today are less likely to take their role for granted and tend to believe

work priorities can interfere with their home lives. While 32% of parents enjoy formal flexible working arrangements, 21% of both men and w o m e n state they h ave n o flexibility at all,” said Abhijeet Mukherjee, CEO of Monster. com - APAC & Gulf. “Even though employers may state they offer arrangements to support working parents, this does not mean both mums and dads are free to utilise these

policies how they see fit. Working parents are desperate for more choices and options, and Malaysian employers need to listen to their requests, or better communicate how they can take advantage of what is on offer to them,” added Mukherjee. It is hoped that more corporate organisations will follow suit for its employees, especially for new mothers and even fathers and this should also encompass on leaves. Currently, the Malaysian Employment Act 1955 does not provide for mandatory p a i d p a te r n i t y l e ave, although some employees in the public sector are given paid paternity leave ranging anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks. But as for the private sector, paternity leave is not mandatory and may be given at the discretion of employers such in the case of AXA Malaysia and recently by foodpanda.com. According to Sayantan Das, Managing Direc tor, foodpanda Malaysia, “foodpanda acknowledges the importance of parents spending quality time to bond with their child. We believe that it is important for both parents to play an active role in the early stages of their child’s life.” It is a good point by Das, but mandatory paid paternity leave has to come through legislation, and until and unless progressive employers look beyond short term commercial costs and focus on long term benefits, this still remains in a bubble. Gerard Soosay graduated with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from University Technology Malaysia and obtained a Master’s in Business Administration from the Paris Graduate School of Management (European MBA). We started with 180 students in 2017 and now have some 500 students, with an expansion plan to increase classroom capacity by 2021. A joint venture with Daiwa from Japan resulted in Sakura Residence, the first luxurious landed development in Malaysia using Japanese prefabricated technology. Apart from that, we are the first integrated development in Medini which offers residence, office and retail. Our Caltex petrol station is the first petrol kiosk in Medini. We also brought in Jaya Grocer in Sunway Citrine Hub - the first in Johor as well as many of the retail brands that we’ve brought in are definitely the first in Medini. Worth mentioning, though it may not be the first - is that we have an ATM machine in Citrine as well as in our Caltex petrol station for added convenience. Many more firsts will be coming up, so stay tuned to find out. Besides that, we have also introduced the first customisation and online purchase system for our Sunway GRID. It comprises of 41 retail lots, 74 units of designer offices and 501 units of residence. The concept allows purchasers to customise their preferred unit online and design their homes from anywhere and anytime around the world. How do you manage such diverse portfolios?

The average age group of our staff is 30 years old so we have a bunch of young, vibrant and driven people here. I must also mention the continuous support I get from our top management, namely our MD Serena Cheah and Deputy MD Tan Wee Bee.

What should be changed in Iskandar Malaysia’s property sector?

I would define change as perhaps enhancement. I believe Iskandar Malaysia needs a game changer and its none other than connectivity. I reflect upon the Coastal Highway Southern Link (CHSL), HSR, RTS and BRT as key elements and we must also look into the border-crossing causeway management system. Both Malaysia and Singapore have so much to gain by this so yes, I think this is something that needs to be worked on. Government ruling, surcharges and increase in fees is something that all parties must sit down and come together for solutions. Timeline of CCC approvals is also something that can be improved. These are low hanging fruits that can be looked into.

Apart from the brands that you guys have brought over, what else is in the pipeline?

Definitely our Big Box Village with almost 700,000 sq ft of gross floor area with around 1700 car parking bays. We are currently working with our retail team in bringing in some reputable brands and F & B outlets to this unique retail village. We are also very excited to be officially launching our 32-acre X PARK, with numerous attractions by the end of the year. Patrons can enjoy indulging in activities such as go-karting, ATV, archery, watersports, futsal etc.

Tell us about some of your CSR practices and Sunway’s alignment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

(SDGs)

We are driving regional commitment to the 17 SDGs through Jeffrey Sachs Centre. We established the Jeffrey Sachs Centre on Sustainable Development (JSC) at Sunway University to revolutionise our work in sustainable development for the nation. Our Founder and Chairman of Sunway, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah has donated USD$10 million to establish the Jeffrey Sachs Centre on Sustainable Development at Sunway University, the largest financial commitment to date that would drive the region to implement the United Nation’s 17SDGs. We’ve had a lot of CSR activities over the years but now what we have done is that we have consolidated our efforts to be aligned with the 17 UNSDGs. The most important part is internalising the values and practices and ensuring that our efforts are not motivated by anything else apart from the belief that we can create a better community with our contributions.

Future plans to look forward to?

We have many but to highlight, we have a hotel and office space coming up as part of the Big Box integrated development. Also in the pipeline is Medini’s first Chinese national school; the SJKC Cheah Fah, which will be fully funded by Sunway Iskandar, as part of our continuous effort to build our Sunway community.

What does Gerard do in his free time?

Free time is something scarce in my vocabulary! I work an insane number of hours, sometimes stretching to more than 60 hours a week. I try and spend as much time as possible with my family, especially making sure our weekends are well spent either by taking short breaks or sporting activities with my son. very first Sunday of May, members of Laughter Yoga Clubs from all over the world celebrate World Laughter Day. For our region, the club

registered under Johor Bahru Happy & Joyous Club, saw a participation of over 500 enthusiastic members letting loose in its 11th year in celebration at AEON Bandar Dato

Laughter Yoga is an exercise which promotes laughing, no need for humour or reason, as a method to curb stress, improve moods, and overall health and wellness. The exercise is a combination of forceful laughing and yoga breathing techniques, as they claim there is scientific evidence that the body cannot differentiate a fake laugh and a real laugh. According to them, laughter, real or not, releases ‘feelgood’ hormones endorphin – our body’s natural chemical reaction to combat stress or pain, acting as happiness boosters and pain relievers. You will find all members of the club high-spirited and animated; one elderly member even

began laughing at the stairs of the stage she accidentally tripped over. Everyone watching followed suit in laughing, for there was no point in being upset or feeling shameful for tripping – they just laughed it off. Guest of h o n o u r, Associate Professor Sivakumar Thurairajasingam, Head Medical Education Unit at Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine & Health Sciences, said that he was first skeptical of the concept of forceful laughing to beat stress. However, he realised that the members of the Laughter Yoga group are often very energetic and zealous, even though most of them are older than he was! He will be conducting a two-week study on the effects of Laughter Yoga and one’s stress

management with his students. Dr Siva’s hypothesis is that Laughter Yoga will decrease a person’s stress levels. “We are the only city in Malaysia which provides free 30 minutes of Laughter sessions in more than 10 residential parks in Johor Bahru,” said Koh Mui Cheng, Organising Chairperson of the 11th World Laughter Day. Laughter sessions are held in main neighbourhood parks for the community to come and have a laugh together in the morning. Should Social Media Influencers Pay An App to Watch Polluters? Income Tax? Disclosing environmental information and

e are all part of the generation that indulges in social media one way or the other. Even If you don’t make use of social media directly, the indirect impact of its existence is still quite prominent. Statistics from dreamgrow.com, an online source of content marketing & social media information, shows there are 3.48 billion social media users in 2019 with a worldwide total growing by 288 million (9 %) since this time last year. At the end of 2018, Facebook had 2.3 billion monthly users, with online adults aged 1834 most likely to follow a brand. Match that with an influencer and it’s no wonder brands tend to choose social media instead of traditional media as their marketing options. The question then arises, should all these social media influencers (SMI) have to pay income tax? Because in actuality, they have taken over the role of advertisers for a lot of brands. The current law states

that those who earn more than RM5,000 a month from paid reviews, sponsored content, or online business via social media are subjected to pay income tax. Since these activities generate income, it has been classified as a profession and therefore, they will need to be taxed. Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah said these online celebrities or influencers should visit LHDN’s office to seek advice on how to declare their earnings and calculate their taxes. “We can detect the individuals who fail to declare their earnings when the companies that hired them for their social media services declare their company’s revenue. By doing so, the companies will also disclose information about the ambassadors or vendors that they hired,” said Sabin. Minors can’t escape this ruling as well, as according to the 1967 Income Tax Act, underage children who earn within the taxable bracket are subjected to

paying income tax. Their parents are responsible in declaring their earnings on their behalf. Now, a lot of SMI’s might be complaining about having to pay income tax, but this is actually a good move for multiple reasons. Firstly, it weeds out those that aren’t serious about their craft. Secondly, it doesn’t affect those that just do it as a side job and those who would like to start giving it a go. With the limit set at RM5000 a month, you need quite a fair bit of work or a big enough project to hit that number. Smaller SMIs wouldn’t really be affected by this unless they decided to go for it full time. Finally, since under LHDN it is considered a legitimate business model, you are allowed to claim for business expenses and tax refunds, which would help in the long run. So if you’re an influencer or plan to be one, it’s best to head over to LHDN offices to find out how to get the application process going and how to go about calculating your income tax. - by Moazan Emran TI

ver since the recent Sungai Kim Kim pollution in Pasir Gudang area, the public have been wondering about the moving forward efforts of the parties involved i.e. the government, town councils, private corporations, NGOs and etc. It was reported that the chemical dump at Sungai Kim Kim has affected the health more than 4,000 people, including students, forcing the government to close all 111 schools in the district. Similarly, but in a larger scale, more than a million people in China died from the effects of ambient air pollution in 2012, according to the World Health Organisation. It’s a shocking number, and Ma Jun, an environmentalist, is exerting steady pressure on the Chinese government and private companies to reduce it. According to the National Geographic website story, as a former investigative reporter who wrote a ground-breaking book called China’s Water Crisis; Ma founded the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs

(IPE) in 2006. The organisation aims to make environmental data accessible. “We have to involve the people in our environmental governance,” says Ma. “They must be informed.” At first there was little data to share. But in 2013 China vowed to “declare war” on pollution and began releasing the hourly levels of PM2.5, the especially harmful fine-particle pollutants. IPE and its partners pushed for the sources of those pollutants to be disclosed. When that happened a year later, IPE incorporated this new data into an online map and phone app called the Blue Map, where users can check the air quality of more than 300 Chinese cities and the water quality of thousands of rivers. These efforts should be adopted here in Malaysia and in our region especially after the Sg Kim Kim incident and ammonia pollution in Sg. Sayong, Kulai, Johor. Through an app, the citizens can determine whether it is safe to send their children outside to play, and if it isn’t, they can identify which factories are to blame. - by The Iskandarian TI

At the purest level of energy, anxiety and depression is a chemical process that has the potential to enhance survival and creativity. Ever wonder why creative people are normally depressed? Before anxiety and depression turns into a chemical imbalance, that energy can serve individuals and the society in many ways. Just

because we haven’t discovered the potential from this process, it doesn’t mean anxiety and depression is bad. With an understanding how energy works, we can channel anxiety and depression before it turns into mental illnesses. The society can offer to heal by speaking up about anxiety and depression in a neutral conversation. Treat anxiety and depression like a normal headache. Each individual knows how to heal, and collectively the body does the same too. Believe that the pain will pass.

Individual healing takes courage There are a few things one can do to recover. For anxiety and depression to heal, one must allow the pain to be heard. Never deny the process, the panic and deep sadness. Instead sit with them like they are your friends. Whenever you have anxiety or are feeling depressed, take a deep breath and feel the energy. You will notice that it’s just a tiny flame screaming for attention. Another way to heal is through the act of giving back.

Throughout our life, we have taken so much, and we give less. Give what you have back to the world. It doesn’t have to be money. You can give your time and energy for free to others. Anxiety and depression needs some light and recognition. Individual and collective ignorance will only make the experience more painful. Find people that you trust and talk about it with them. Professionals and therapists like psychiatrics and healers are great people to begin with. TI

Could He Be Faking His Illness?

Challenging misassumptions on people with “invisible” illnesses

recently met a student, Matt (not his real name) who explained to me that his final examinations were in a few weeks’ time and he was having difficulty concentrating during his revision. I was about to give some usual advice as a student counsellor such as reducing screen distractions, observing sleep hygiene and using different learning and memory techniques, until I saw him cringing in pain. He explained that whenever he has to focus, especially during revision, a shooting pain would start from the base of his spine, spreading throughout his back and end at the base of his head. He has tried various types of painkillers, prescribed and over-the-counter medications from the pharmacy, but no amount of medication could ease his pain. With the level of pain that he was having (10 out of 10 in the pain scale), it made going to classes and sitting for examination impossible. At the first instance, my thoughts went along the lines of “he is just making this up to escape his examinations…” or perhaps, “this could be one of his attention-seeking strategies.” I continued and asked if he had undergone any consultation with medical professionals or gone for medical tests. Apparently after going through multiple medical tests, the results came back inconclusive and he couldn’t get an official diagnosis for his condition. Some experts used the term “psychosomatic” or medically unexplained symptoms. What Matt was experiencing could be termed as conversion disorder, also known as functional neurological disorder. This condition may happen because of a psychological conflict where the brain and

the body are unable to send and receive signals properly. Studies have estimated that 20 to 25% of patients in general hospital setting have individual symptoms of conversion disorder such as blindness, paralysis, inability to speak or swallowing difficulties . But it may be difficult for us to clearly identify someone who is affected by this condition in our day-to-day setting, such as in Matt’s case. The “invisibility” of this condition makes it harder for his teachers or his school’s student support team to discover his need for medical support. The best course of action for Matt will be to find a suitable treatment, which could range from physical therapy, counselling, effective relaxation strategies or medication . From the conversation I had with Matt, it was revealed to me that even if medical tests do not reveal any anomalies in a person, it does not necessarily mean that irregularities aren’t there. Our way forward is to not assume that people with unexplainable conditions are merely imagining things or making things up. Having an awareness that such disorders exist is a start. Proposed Amendment to the IRA 1967 – Part One

he Industrial Relations landscape of Malaysia continues to evolve and change and the new Government aims to make changes by way of amendments to bring Malaysia up to the standard with the International Labour Organisations (ILO) Conventions. Part of this change is the new amendments to the Industrial Relations Act 1967(IRA). The proposed changes have since been published on the Human Resource website for public engagement and are set to be tabled in Parliament in July. One of the major changes is its impact of the role of the Minister within the context of dismissal has been significantly altered. It removes the Minister of Human Resource discretion to refer cases to the Industrial Court. Previously, the Minister acted as the gate keeper to the Industrial Court based on the recommendations of the DGIR. The amendments now make it clear that in the event that parties are unable to settle during reconciliation, the Director General is obligated to refer the matter to the Court. It will ensure that workmen are allowed to

have their day in court, reducing the risk of injustice occurring. Yet it also increases the likelihood of more frivolous and vexatious claims coming before the Court.

In addition, another change is the introduction of S.20A for Discrimination in Employment. This is similar to the Proposed Amendments to the Employment Act. Amendments in the IRA lay down the law that “(1) An employer shall not discriminate any workman on

the grounds of gender, religion, race or disability” until and unless it is an inherent requirement of the job for exclusion/preference. The amendments imply that any

complaint made to the DGIR will result in investigation and the DGIR will try to resolve the issue, failure to do so would lead to the complaint being referred to the Industrial Court to decide. The amendments also propose the increase of the penalty for non-compliance with

a Court Award from RM2,000.00 to RM30,000.00. It’s a significant increase but hopefully one that will act as a sufficient deterrent to parties. Notwithstanding the above, an exciting amendment would be the introduction of an Industrial Appeals Court. Not much is known on when or how it will come to fruition. The proposed amendments are silent, merely promising that it will be incorporated at a later date. The Appeals Court comes with the hope that it will significantly reduce the number of cases of Judicial Review to the Civil Courts. Also, that the appeals process will look at the merits of the Awards rather than just as a decision-making process as most judicial reviews does. The amendments would bring about what likely will be a better resolution process for Dismissal cases. But the likelihood of an increase of frivolous cases due to the absence of the Minister’s filtering process is one issue that will need to be

addressed. Furthermore, employers will also need to ensure that their company practices are in line with the law. This will prevent the probability of complaints being made against them on issues of discrimination. Beyond just the impact of the amendments to the Industrial Court and dismissal matters, the proposed amendments also touches on laws regarding Trade Unions right from recognition all the way to bargaining powers. Time to Buy on Dip?

raditionally, May is a month investors are scared off the most, as statistically, the stock market tends to have big corrections in May. As the saying goes “Sell in May and Go Away”. In May this year, this adage became a fulfilled prophecy. The main reason is the unpredictable trade progress which resulted in steep correction in the global stock market. The question is, is it a good time to buy on dip? What I have learned in life is that, there is no such thing as a ‘sure thing’. While US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in April said a US-China trade agreement would go “way beyond” previous efforts to open China’s market to US firms, President Trump said in May that the trade talk was going too slowly, and “They broke the deal”, followed by increasing the tariff from 10% to 25% to China. In return, China raised tariffs for some US goods. With these gestures, the Dow Jones Industrial (DJI) plummeted tremendously in matter of days, setting potentially the worst May tumble in nearly 50 years. To make things worse, the US Treasury yield curve inverted again on 13th May 2019, with the 10-year note yield falling below the yield of the 3-month bill, indicating heightened risk of recession. Locally, Malaysia saw the worst net flow of foreign funds on a year-to-date (YTD) basis in ASEAN in the middle of May 2019, with a net outflow of US$801.3 million. As a result, the Malaysia Composite Index (FBMKLCI) fell below the critical support of 1600 on 14th May 2019, marking the lowest since 2016. With huge volatility globally and internally, is it a good time to buy on dip? Before we zoom into it, let’s look at our portfolio on 14th May 2019:

trade war started in 2017. This shows that the US did not manage to reduce trade deficit even after increasing tariffs to China. 2. The increased tariffs could wipe out the benefits from Trump’s tax reform. According to the US National Economic Council chief Larry Kudlow, it was American business that paid the tariffs on any goods brought in from China, and that US consumers would foot the bill if firms passed on the cost increase. If this is the case, higher tariffs to China would lead to higher inflation for the US. 3. Higher inflation may cause the Federal Reserve Bank (Fed) to hike interest rate which is bad for the stock market. Look at what had happened to the stock market in 2018? The Fed increased interest rate four times. And moving into 2019, the Fed assured it would back off from rate hikes, and the market performed much better. 4. While China exports more to US than the other way, China is a huge market for US companies. For example, sales revenue of Apple totaled $46 billion in China, making it the company’s second largest

There were dividends from Ranhill, Kipreit and KGB at 1 cent, 1.51 cents and 0.80 cents, respectively. Total dividend to be received is RM2138. So does the correction offer an opportunity to buy on dip? It depends on two factors. First, if the share price of the desired company is attractive (great value), secondly, the trade progress. In different perspectives, the increased tariffs to China do not serve US well in the long term. There are a number of reasons: 1. The trade deficit between the US and China has widened in 2018 since the

market after US. There are more giant companies like Boeing, Nike, Starbucks to name a few, selling products to China. 5. The US is heading to the President Election next year. If Donald Trump does not strike a deal that is good for the US economy, its stock market and most importantly the US citizens, it is unlikely he will be re-elected. Conclusion Since the ongoing trade war would do more harm than good for the US, I trust the two largest economies would eventually reach a deal. With this, I believe a correction due to trade spat would serve as an opportunity to accumulate good quality business with an attractive valuation. TI

tarted in the early 1900’s by a group of friends throwing tin lids into circles in the sand, it was once called Tin Lid Golf. Modern Disc Golf was introduced in 1976 in Canada. This sport is now one of the fastest growing sports in Malaysia, with Beasts Unchained being the 2nd officially sanctioned event by PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association) held in Malaysia, and both were held in Johor Bahru. If you’re wondering what Disc Golf is, it is exactly what you think it is, golf using discs, or specially designed Frisbees. The goal is to throw a Frisbee into a goal located on a field. It’s played using rules similar to golf. The concept and game itself is simple, but difficult to master. Just like golf you have different difficulties of the goals you’re hoping to score. Introduced in Malaysia in 2018 by Eric Grover, a teacher at Crescendo-HELP school, who started living and working here during this period. Once he started working

in JB, he was surprised that the sport itself hadn’t reached our shores, as Ultimate Frisbee is such a big sport in Malaysia. Eric decided to then try to introduce Disc golf to locals. “In the beginning it was hard, because I didn’t have an outlet, but what made it easy is that I reached out to the Ultimate Frisbee crowd. Through that, I managed to convince some of their players to play Disc Golf,” said Eric. As the amount of players grew, so did the amount of courses and Johor is now home to 5 courses located in different parts of the state and there are also 2 courses in Kuala Lumpur. Speaking to one of Malaysia’s top players, Redha Fahmi Radzuan “I started Disc Golf late July last year, I used to be a huge Ultimate Frisbee freak, but I transitioned to Disc Golf thanks to Eric. I really enjoy Disc Golf as you only have yourself to rely on. With Ultimate Frisbee you need to have a team to play with and that’s sometimes not possible. You can’t blame anyone else if you play badly. It’s also because I love nature and Disc Golf courses around the world are usually in very beautiful places and it also have to adhere to PDGA standards.” Redha is also joined by his fiancé, Nur Hareesa bt Shahaini, who’s also one of Malaysia’s top female players. He started Coppola 5 years ago and described opening his business as “fulfilling his calling.” With plans to open up several restaurants based on varying ethnicities and cuisines, he said, “We are active in making Horizon Hills as a dining destination where you can find all kinds of cuisines.” Stefano owns 3 other restaurants and café with the fourth opening soon in the same area.

Among Coppola’s wide array of wood-fired pizzas, all cooked in the Milanmade Ambriogi wood oven, my favourite would be the “4 Stagioni” where the pizza combine flavours in four different quarters containing tomatoes, mozzarella, cheese, ham, mushrooms, black olive and artichokes. According to Stefano, “a perfectlymade pizza must not be too soft, nor too hard. It must be balanced in every way, just like life.” A definite winning dish indeed!
