ROUND LAKE, IL "Crede quod habes, et habes"-- Beli eve what you have. and you do. My dearest mother-! know you have made sacrifi ces beyond what any mother sho uld make for their child. I have the utmost respect for you, and I will always love you. A child is sometimes considered to a product of their pare nt. There is no o ther mother in the world that I would want. You have g iven me every too l and chance of opportunity that a parent can give to her child. I promise you that I w ill always be the man you rai sed me to be, and that I wi ll be the best father that you always wished l had . Mr. Walters- 1 have never had the words of wisdom and teac hings of a father. Over the pas t four years I have learned many things from you that I will always cherish. Yo u ha ve shown me one of the greatest characteri stic s of a leader: that a good leader may have faults and may even fall. However, a true leader gets back up and continues with dignity no matter how dark the path may look. I thank you with all of my heart fo r being a father to me and teaching me what it means to be a true gentleman. I will aspire to be such a gentl eman and a father. I hope o ne day that I will be as wise as you. and that I may have the same kind of life-changi ng impact on others as yo u have had on me. Dr. Lake- Thank you for be ing a wonderful me ntor to me and for being my mother on campus. You have always been very kind and supporti ve of me when I most needed it. I will mi ss your smile and enthu sias m. I will never fo rget the many memories that I have shared w ith you, because they will always be in my heart. I have learned what it mean s to be a scho lar from you. A scho lar pursues knowledge and applies w hat they learn to all aspects of their life. You have taught me much more than Latin and the Classics; you have tau ght me how hi story is made. Hi story is not just made by sw ift action and mo ments of brilli ance but by the very character that is within us as individuals. Thi s character that is within us can have an unknown impact o n other indi viduals and ultimately o n the world. You have show n me that character can be bro ught o ut from anyone; you just have to look . Th ank yo u for mak ing everyone around you the best individu al they can be. Mr. Engstrom- I have truly enj oyed being in your class thi s year. I w ish that I had been ab le to get to kn ow you better. However, I am thankful for being abl e to interact w ith you in both the classroom and dorm. Way land Academy wou ld just be an instituti on if there weren't teachers like you. You are an ho nest and respectable man whom I beli eve will leave a great legacy: a legacy of character that wi ll o nl y aid your students in thei r pursuit of know ledge . It is people like you that make thi s world a better place. Thank you for be ing a role model , not just for me, but the entire Way land campus. "Character is more important than inte llect. To mom and dad, thank you fo r believing in me and supporting my choice though sometimes my determ ination forces me to go against you both. To my dear Rachel , the person I treasure the most, thank you fo r always being the first one to share my happiness and sorrow. To the best mentor Mr. Hill, thank you for your safety glasses and great advice. I will still argue with you about the education system even twenty years later. By the way, did you send out my grades for this week? To my favorite teachers Mr. Disch and Ms. Krause, thank you for giving me the best opportunities to show my talent and dedication. To Papa Walters, thank you for tying my tie early in the morning and waiting for my arrival late after midnight. To Kyujin (hopefully you will see this), thank you for helping me find my way. I always tried to follow you, and I believe it will not take too long for me to be like Kyu. Wayland Academy, I never believed I could have this amazing experience here. Thank you all and good luck tomorrow!
I've come a long way in these four years. I stepped out of the car in front of Wayland as a 5'2 80 lb. freshmen . Now in my senior year I am 6'2 180 pounds , amazingly handsome , built, and known as the ladies man . I've experienced many great things at Wayland that have changed my life forever. I've grown close to a group of people that I label as my BEFF's consisting of Jocelyne Chavez, Leonard Rogers, Ray Harris, Lionel Senga, Jordain #2 Sanger, Can Ozbalkan , and last but not least Cailin McCreedy. I want to thank my family for everything they have done for me; I love them for that. I want to give a big S/0 to my mentor DJ Chill Hill. You have put up with my antics for three years, you put me on the right path of success. I really appreciate you Mr. Hill , and I love you dearly. I also want to give another S/0 to my little brother Alex ldonije , who will keep my legacy at Wayland going on forever. To the freshmen , enjoy your four years here, because they'll be gone before you know it. Much love -Jordan Roberts

DR. KEELY LAKE, PH. D. H'12 Non . Nein. Nyet. No. It seems that no matter what the language is, Dr. Lake cannot decli ne any request. I have never known a person more willing to take on a new responsibil ity, give up her free time to help someone else, or do a little more research because a stude ntj ust might ask an obscure question. She happily teaches at 7:30 in the morning just to give her pupils the opportu ni ty to study something they could not otherwise fit into their schedule. She is indefatigable. I am constantly flabbergasted at the bread th and depth of her knowledge; I never fail to learn something from her. It could be a peculia ri ty of grammar, a better way to prepare a meal, an anecdote to tease the brain , a different approach to teaching a topic, or a new BBC program to add to my list of must-see shows. She is always exposing me to someth ing new because she is always discovering things for herself. In the midst of our frantic Wayland lives , we often take those who give of themselves for granted. If everything is running smoothl y, we forget to acknowledge all the hard work that goes into making it so. I doubt that anyo ne (even Dr. Lake) realizes all of the ways that she has shaped people's Wayland experience. All of us at the Academy owe Dr. Lake a debt of gratitude fo r everything that she has done to enrich li fe here on campus. Dearest Pinkie, you are a role model for me in so many ways. Not only do I admire your wealth of knowledge , but your constant desire to delve deeper and wider challenges me to conti nue to grow personally. You are never satisfied. "Good enough" is never good e nough. Your expectations for your students are high , but yo u hold yourself to an even more Olympia n standard. I am awed by what you do . On top of your impressive ach ievements, you are also a sincere and ca ring person who I am blessed to call my friend. Thank yo u for being who you are and for making my li fe immeasurably richer. Love, Pinky
Mr. Kurt Walters H'11
Dr. Lake was my mentor for all four years at Wayland. It is difficult being a teacher at a boarding school- studen ts turn to you for everything and Dr. Lake was an amazing support system. I could go to her when I was having a hard time and she would help me through it. I'm so thankful I had her during my high school years and I am so glad she is being honored in the yearbook!
Meredith Zafian '06 Walking down the third floor hallway you can always hear the sounds of many different classes, but the class you can always count on to hear is Latin. You can hear Dr. Lake teaching parts of speech with examples such as "We beat him with sticks", or the Latin kids jokingly asking each other if they forgot "how to English." If yo u looked at a Latin nerd's computer, you would see that their top-visited sites were Whitaher's Wm¡ds and Latin Student ProblentS. While all these things make being a Latin student wonderful, the best part of learning Latin is having tl1e talented classicist Dr. Lake as a teacher. Dr. Lake's lessons are brilliant and always interesting. Her passion and knowledge of the classics influences her students to love the subject in a way they never knew they could. She teaches us not only lessons of the fierce Romans and the dramatic gods, but also a sense of life. She cares for and supports her students on a personal level. She teaches us life lessons abo ut how to interact witl1 peers and how to succeed with our dreams. She has become like a mo ther to all of us. She is so helpful, patient, and understanding. She continually pushes us to do our very best. She goes above and beyond to guide our minds to places we had never dreamed of discovering; her respect for the ancient scholars gives us the pride and confidence in ourselves that we need to take on our futures. None of us could have asked for a better Latin teacher. Dr. Lake is an amazing teacher; we love coming to class every day, and we have learned more from her than we ever could have asked. So, th ank you Dr. Lake for being an inspiring light in our lives.

Dr. Lake was my mentor for two years. Before those two years my only exposure to Dr. Lake was through brief hallway smiles, track season, and dorm duty . You might ask my why I chose Dr. Lake to be my mentor, but I honestly cannot remembe r. I just remember knowing that I had made the right decision to a llow her to mentor me. lam SO GLAD I chose her. Mentorship is a funny thing at Wayland. You may or may not have your mentor as a coach or teacher, but you always have them as a friend . I believe that mentorship is all about investing your time and efforts in someone else's life . Dr. Lake definitely did this for me. She is a spectacular woman and has not only impacted my life in a positive way but has taught me so many life lessons that I hope to remember well into adulthood. She always took time out of her schedule to listen to me , check up on me, tell me about her life, and to pursue our friendship as much as students can with teachers during their high school career. She is patient, kind, quick to listen , slow to speak , energetic, and always willing to give a helping hand. It is by no means an easy task to teach at Wayland. Teachers sign their li ves over to students outside of tl1e classroom; I would say most of them have been able to balance everything in the midst of it all , but Dr. Lake has done an exceptional job. Dr. Lake, when you read this, know that I miss you all the time and thin I\ of yo u often. You are a profound woman and deserve more emails and life updates from me. I should have put my nerves aside during track for you and ran the 400m dash more often , but alas, you were too sweet to see me go through that pain. !loved our mentor group so much and I hope in five to ten years that we can have a reunion and laugh all night . Keep representing our row in the Chapel and l hope to see you soon! Miss you terribly! Much Love, Anne P.S.-Any students looking to join a new Mentor Group , please join D Lal\e's! "Its always cool down by the lake." And good luck a t getting a pea[, inside her apartment. On ly a few in history have! Anne Rauschert '11
Whe neve r l am asked what foreign language l took in high school my answer usually surprises people. "You took Latin and Creel\?'' they respond incredulously. When they hear I studied the classics for three years they are shocl,ed: "You must love Latin!" In all honesty, it wasn't my love of Latin that kept me coming back , but rather it was Dr. Lake. I had never met a teacher more passionate about his or her subject; in fact, calling Dr. Lal;:e a teacher seems incorrect as she does notjust teach the classics, she lives them. In and out of the classroom, her dedication to Latin and Greek does not go unnoticed in tl1e classics community and her hard work should not go unnoticed by tl1e Wayland community. Dr. Lal\e taught me so much more than was on her syllabus, and for that I am very thankful. While !learned about Latin conjugations and Roman history, Dr. Lake pushed me harder than any other teacher and she served as a true role model. I have encountered teachers that treat teaching as a chore. "Sorry, my office hours end at 4:30." I always laugh to myself and think, that is what made Dr. Lake different; for her, teaching is not a chore, and she has set the bar for all future teachers and mentors. I am sure many of you currently at Wayland have gotten to know Dr. Lake through classes, volleyball , or dorm duty, but for those of you who h¡ave not formally crossed paths with her, I strongly encourage you to do so.

!-laving lived at Wayland for most of my li fe , I thought I knew & understood this place of ours pretty well. Knowing Dr. Lal;:e has both reinforced what l already knew about The Academy & given me a new lens through which to look at this old place. She is yet another example of a n outstanding faculty member with whom I had the pleasure of learning & now working. Then , she showed me how dedicated facu lty made it all happen. As a student, it was easy to think that on ly we worked hard , that the faculty somehow had it easier than we did. Dr. Lake is probably the hardest working faculty member. I am in awe of how she manages a plate piled so high. Not only does she teach almost every class hour, coach volleyball & track , & run JCL, she is also a member of more committees than I can name. She regularly comes back from conferences with new committees and leadership roles. Last year I tried to take Latin 1. I enjoy languages, !like learning, I thought it would ' be a piece of cake. I lasted five weel\s . Because she is my dear friend in addition to my colleague she doesn't hold it against me , that I bagged out on her class. I appreciate her friendship so much . The sidelong glances , our attempts to shock Mr. Walters with comments that aren't a ppropriate for "little ears." I can always go to he r to vent, to talk out a problem or an idea. All eight yearbooks I h ~1ve completed , would have been riddled with e rrors if not for her eagle eye. She is a treasure. l can no longer imagine Wayland without her. KeeKee, you have all the words, I don't have enough
to
truly say thank you.
