RAYMOND A. PATTERSON, PRESIDENT

Wayland 's Centennial year has been made even more successful by the inspired leadership of its headmaster, Mr. Ra ymond A . Patterson. In his year of administration, the students and faculty have respected and admired his capability and the high standards set for Wayland Academy. Mr. Patterson's career began at Wayland when he entered school as a freshman in 1936. During his four years he was an active participant in all activities. He proved himself to be one of the best athletes in the history of the school, winning letters in football. basketball. and track. His high jump record has not yet been broken. After graduation from Wayland in 1940, Mr. Patterson attended the University of Wisconsin where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees in education. In 1944 he gained recognition as one of the most outstanding basketball players to attend the university and was named to the All -American basketball team . Mr. Patterson returned to his alma mater in 1948 as head basketball coach, and science and biology instructor. During the succeeding years he spent a large amount of time and effort in the public relations and admissions departments . Not only is Mr. Patterson a member of the Wayland family, he is also a well established member of the community . He is a member of the Rotary, a deacon and trustee in the Baptist Church , a member of the Wisconsin "W" Club, the Wisconsin Alumnae , and Wisconsin Memorial Union . As Wayland moves into her second century of service , she looks back with satisfaction and ahead with determination to meet the challenge of the future . Under the guidance of Mr. Patterson , we feel sure that the tradition and ideals of Wayland will develop character and knowledge.

Mr. A. E. Wichman, Wayland's historian, toastmaster, Dean of Guidance and Vocational Guidance, has been an important member of the Wayland faculty since I 925. For those years he has devoted his complete life to the Wayland students and faculty. Mr. Wichman obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Carrol College and has done graduate work at the Universities of Chicago and Wisconsin. He majored in journalism and dramatics while in college and has been a frequent speaker in Chapel. From 1934 to 1942 " Wick " was Dean of Boys. His expert coun seling has been "significant" to literally hundreds of Wayland students. Every other spring Mr. Wichman takes charge of an Historical Field Trip to Washington, D. C. Mr. Wichman 's constant good humor and patient guidance have made him one of our most popular faculty members.

Mr. Leo M. Schnur has been an integral part of the Wayland faculty since the fall of 1944. During the time that he has been with us h e has proved himself to be an exceptionally able teacher and a friend to all. He seems to have the magic formula for teaching even the most difficult math process to even the worst students. Mr. Schnur obtained his Bachelor of Education Degree from River Falls State Teachers College. He received his Master 's from Northwestern University and has done graduate work at the Uni versities of Wisconsin and Purdue. Just this last summer he won a scholarship to do work at Purdue. Mr. Schnur was Dean of Boys for the year 1946-1947. At the present time he is Business Administrator, Head of the Math. Department, Director of Athletics , and Track Coach . "Coach" has endeared himself to hundreds of people who have worked with him in the last ten years through his willingness to do any job for which nobody else has the time.

Mr. Richard Holstein, one of the newer members of the Wayland faculty, joined the staff in January, 1954. Mr. Holstein 's home town is Lebanon, Pennsylvania. He attended Lebanon Valley College at Annville, Pa., where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in biology and chemistry. He has also done graduate work in education. Before coming to Wayland , Mr. Holstein had served as science instructor, registrar, and acting headmaster at West Nottingham Academy in Colora, Maryland. Officially titled the Dean of Curriculum, Mr. Holstein is also the supervisor of the Science Department. in which he teaches chemistry and physics. He assists in the music and photography department. Understanding and friendly, Mr. Holstein has quickly become one of the best-liked members of our faculty.

CLASS traditional activities , " Sadie Hawkins' Day ,'' which is always popular with everyone. It is handed down by every fourth year graduating class to the incoming freshmen. The Junior class was also well represented in all phases of Wayland life, having many jun iors as officers in various clubs and activities . There were also many junior students on varsity athletic teams, and still others distinguished themselves academically. Under the capable leadership of their class officers the class has had an outstanding year .

We sophomores worked with unequaled class spirit on both our Homecoming skit and effigy, comin g through with novel ideas to make our centennial a great success. The week before Thanksgiving we gave our first activity of the year, and we know everyone had a grand time. As usual. we put on the traditional Sopho -

CLASS money for next year's Junior Prom.

It will

take a lot of work to equal this year's Prom, but we intend to try our best . Miss Dwinell and Mr. Meyer were wonderful to us this year, and were always ready and willing to chaperone us and help out in our many class and committee meetings . Mrs. Pihl strom, our class counselor, was always willing to help us with any problems we had, giving many of us much needed guidance, co-operation and efforts, and we feel that our sophomore year would not have been successful if it were

not for the patience and guidance of our coun selors.

FRESHMAN Our first year at Wayland was a happy and successful one for all. Everyone had a lot of class spirit and perhaps that is the reason we did so well on our Homecoming skit and effigy . We were well represented in sports as well as social activities . Also , w e had our claim to fame as far as the honor roll goes . The freshmen activities really showed the upper classmen what we " fr eshies" could do. Ken Keller

WARREN HALL

The festivities of Wayland's Centennial Homecoming began Friday, October 29, with the erection of effigies on various parts of the campus. Although the freshmen literally ran off with first prize in the effigies, the seniors turned the tables and carried away the highest honor in the class skits, which were presented Friday night. Following the drama, everyone gathered before the bonfire as Mr. Boya presented the first place football team in our conference. To begin Saturday's activities the girls hockey team displayed their ability in an uproaring tie game against Milwaukee Downer. In the afternoon, our boys, to counteract twenty-five years of football defeats by Milwaukee Country Day, fought hard to score a 20-路19 victory. Eddie Howard furnished dance music for all the students, faculty, parents, and friends Saturday night. The court, led by Queen, Connie Zipprodt, was presented to the guests during an intermission. The victory football of the afternoon was given to Mr. Pickard. Mid-Sunday afternoon brought forth applause from hundreds of happy guests who attended the dedication of our newest building to Samual Pickard, Sr. This happiest event concluded what proved to be truly the happiest and most successful weekend the school has known. We say ... Here's to Wayland, and her success in the years to come .. . may they be as prosperous as the last ones have been ... .

The "Little Red" opened its hockey season October 9, by playing M .U.S . here. The first team lost 1-0 after a terrific second half struggle. The second team won 2-0 with a goal by Baumgarth and by Sharp. A few weeks later our hockey ladies journeyed to M.U .S., and the first team held them scoreless 0-0, but the second team lost 2-0. At Homecoming our first team played a fighting game against Downer and tied them 1-1 with a goal by Kerber. The second team held Downer until very late in the game when they finally scored for a 1-0 loss for the hockey ladies. When we again played Downer both teams suffered loss. At the conclusion of our season we wish to thank Miss Hoyer and Miss De Groot for their time and coaching.

Girls' basketball practice started off the first part of January with a team of twenty girls. The first game was February 5, against the women faculty members. This innovation at Wayland proved to be fun for all. On February 19, the "little red" traveled to Milwaukee to play Downer. The tournament was held February 26, at Wayland. Both gyms were used, and the tournament- lasted all day. Teams participating in it this year were Downer, M.U.S. Kemper, and Wayland. Kemper was new at the basketball tournament, and we enjoyed having them. All the girls wish to thank Miss Gretchen De Groot for her coaching and helpfulness.

Wayland traveled to Minneapolis to face Blake Academy in the season opener. The Minnesota conference champions were much too powerful and handed the young and inexperienced Redmen a 26-0 defeat. The Redmen began conference play at home by trouncing Racine Lutheran, 32-6. Racine scored first, but the determined Wayland team fought back to lead at the half, 13-6. On the following Saturday, Wayland handed Milwaukee Lutheran a 6-0 defeat in the final eight seconds of play. On October 9, Wayland defeated Northwestern Preps, 26-0 for their third conference victory. Next we defeated Hartland High School 38-0 in a non-conference battle. After a slow start, the Redmen defeated M.U.S. 14-6. The Redmen celebrated their Homecoming by defeating Milwaukee Country Day, 20-19, to clinch at least a tie for the conference title. Wayland traveled to Lake Forest for their final game, where they were defeated 25-14, by a fast and inspired Lake Forest eleven . Wayland thus ended one of the finest seasons in its history, winning the co-championship of the Midwest Prep Conference. Wayland was well represented on the all conference first team with Chuck Morgan and Fred Kapelle; second team, Dale Schoon, Colin Stetson, and Frank Hochholzer.

At this wntmg, Wayland is leading in the Midwest Prep Conference battle with a record of five wins and two losses. The team's complete records stands at eight wins against three defeats, and with six remaining games left in conference play, the Redmen seem to be the team to beat. So far, the highlight of the season was a 62-59 win over Lake Forest, in which the team avenged an earlier defeat. Guard Paul Deniger and center Jim Gascoigne have provided much of the scoring punch for the Redmen. Chuck Morgan, Fred Kapelle, Dale Schoon, and a large group of adequate reserves have also turned in fine games for head coach Dan Wood's current conference leaders.

W ayland's Junior Varsity team, under the able direction of Coach M eyer, has compiled a seven and four record to date. In every game the boys show marked improvement, and are sure to provide rugged opposition in their remaining games. Among the team's best efforts this season was a 45-42 overtime victory over Juneau, and a 48-39 trouncing of Lake Forest, where the team showed fine teamwork and balanced scoring. Sophomores Harold Kickert and Butch Kellogg have become the leadin g scoring threats, but the steady improvement of Bill C ra ig, Jim Hinkson , Porter Thompson , Jerry Johnson, Bill Geittmann , and many others, has molded the team into a smoother, well balanced squad.
