Could Belmont become Trolley Town USA? By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Everyone knows that thanks to its spectacular holiday lights and events, McAdenville has acquired the name Christmas Town USA. In a similar vein of specialness, as of last week Belmont has now acquired not one, not two, but three vintage trolley cars that could give the city every right to call itself Trolley Town USA. OK so that’s just a fanciful suggestion, but the true fact is now the CityWorks building on E. Catawba is where three trolleys are snugly situated awaiting finishing touches and deployment on the tracks that run from downtown Belmont towards Wilkinson Blvd. Last week saw two trolleys brought to Belmont from
Charlotte. These cars, No. 1 and No. 85, join the 1913 Brill trolley that has called the CityWorks garage home for six years while it is undergoing a complete refurbishment. The two Charlotte trolleys arrived on flatbed trucks. Monday saw No.85 pulled through downtown Belmont and parked for a while near Stowe Park before finally being delivered to CityWorks. The spectacle drew quite a crowd. Tuesday witnessed car No. 1 delivered straight to CityWorks. Flatbeds from Advantage Machinery did the delivering. The cars were owned by the Charlotte Historic Landmarks Commission and had been housed since 2018 at the Sabona Mill in West Charlotte. Belmont Trolley, Inc. co-
vice president Nathan Wells was with the trolleys every mile of the way to their new home. “There’s kind of this little kid kind of tingle like a Christmas Eve sort of feeling waiting for Santa,” Wells said of the delivery. “Then there’s a more overriding sense of calm and satisfaction of a job well done. So though the project is not done, there’s still the sense of accomplishment knowing that it’s getting See TROLLEY, Pages 8 & 9

Aileen Friday of Stanley has done some serious travelin’ By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info
Unity Day event will be virtual
Trolley No. 85 makes its grand entrance into downtown Belmont.
Back in 1962 country music star Johnny Cash recorded a tune entitled “I’ve Been Everywhere”. That song pretty much sums up the life of 94-year-old Ailene Friday of Stanley. Friday, who has lived in Stanley since she was a teenager, was faced with a serious situation in 1994 when her husband Charles passed away. She could sit at home or she could get out and see the country. Well, she chose the latter and over the past quarter century has seen the U.S.A. from stem to stern. “I had never been anywhere before except Lake Lure and Chimney Rock,” Friday said. “So in 1997 I decided to get together with some friends, charter a bus, and start traveling.” Over the years, Friday’s circle of traveling companions has expanded and the scope of the sojourns has too. Sometimes so many folks go with her that it takes two buses.
“I’ve been to every state except Hawaii,” she said. “I don’t like flying over water.” The list of places Friday has visited reads like an atlas of America. Some of them are- Grand Canyon, Alaska, five trips to California, Salt Lake City, Oregon, and Kentucky. She’s also been to Nova Scotia in Canada. One of her favorite spots is Branson, Missouri. “I’m planning a trip there again for a group in April,” she said. “I already have thirty people signed up, but there’s room for a few more.” Friday, who organizes the jaunts and makes all the arrangements, doesn’t have a computer at home. So, how in the world does she book rooms and make other arrangements? “I use an old fashioned desk phone and contact the Ailene Friday, 94, of Stanley enjoys looking at scrap books chamber of commerce wher- filled with memories of her extensive travels. ever we are going,” she says matter of factly. Seeing new sights is cool, S.T.I Charters bus driver spoke highly of her choices in but Friday really relishes lodging arrangements. John Benton has been carmeeting new people. “She does not book dog rying Friday and her groups across the nation for years. He bed hotels,” he said. See FRIDAY, Page 2

“I have made friends all over,” she said. “You meet the nicest people on a tour.” Covid cut into Friday’s travels the last couple of years, but whenever she travels precautions such as masks are part of the scenario. “Covid knocked it down a bit,” she said. “But we are hoping to be back to normal.”
So, how much longer does Friday plan to hit the highways? “I’m going keep going as long as I can,” she said. “The customers don’t want me to quit.” Interested in going to Branson with Friday? Call her at 704- 263-2264 and get ready to ramble. BACKED BY A YEAR-ROUND

Local CAP group takes part in Wreaths Across America Story/photos by Sue Buetler December 18th marked the seventh year for Wreaths Across America in Gaston County in honor of the veterans who faithfully served. According to Wreaths Across America Location Coordinator, Sue Beutler, the event “simply wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of the Gaston County Honor Guard, Civil Air Patrol, Gaston County Veterans Coun-
cil, Marine Corps League and local Girls Scouts”. Rebounding from last year’s low numbers due to Covid, the day saw 845 wreaths placed on veteran graves at Gaston Memorial Park. Beutler added, “with more than 4,000 veterans buried there, we have barely scratched the surface. It’s heartbreaking when someone tells me their loved one didn’t get a wreath.

We need more community support”. A ceremony led by the Gastonia Squadron of Civil Air Patrol began at noon in conjunction with ceremonies all across the country. In his opening remarks Lt. Derk Beutler of Civil Air Patrol said “today we show a united front of national unity all across the United States of America as we remember the fallen, honor those who serve and teach our children the value of freedom”. Mount Holly Police Chief, Don Roper, also spoke to those gathered for the event, and Dr. Crown Hoffman played Taps to close out the ceremony. Despite some rainy weather, participation from the community was strong with individuals of all ages laying the live balsam
wreaths. Nationwide just over 2.4 million wreaths were sponsored and placed at 3,136 participating locations. Wreaths Across America Executive Director, Karen Worcester, commented “As I think of those numbers, each of those Dr. Crown Hoffman plays Taps. gravesites, and each of those volunteers saying the servicemember’s name out loud and sharing a small gesture of gratitude for the freedoms Americans enjoy, I am immensely humbled. I am also truly overwhelmed with pride for the people of this great nation where so many individuals and communities can come together in unity and support for those who have protected our freedom”. Wreath sponsorships are available year round, and can be purchased for 2022 through the following website: www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/NC0104P. Questions may also be directed to the Gaston County Location Coordinator by email to sue.beutler@ncwgcap.org. A volunteer.

Holy Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org
This past week my family and I had the opportunity to take a few days away in the mountains. I love the mountains, and I always take every chance I can get to visit. The really awesome part of this particular trip was that it snowed! We haven’t had much snow the last few years, so it was really great to see so much snow all around. The kids loved it! When snow falls on a gray winter day, there’s just something about is so pure and beautiful. We all can see in our minds a picturesque view of a snow-covered field, and trees with snowy branches. 1 Peter 1:16 says, “You shall be holy, for I am holy” (ESV). When we think of the word holy, it can be defined as set apart, exalted, perfect, worthy of devotion, pure and righteous. God is worthy of our worship every single day. He is worthy of our praise and honor. He is perfect in every way. God is a righteous god, and holy. Just as Peter wrote, God is holy, and we are to be holy too. Granted, we can’t be perfect, only Jesus is perfect. We can’t be perfect, but we can al-
ways seek to be holy. We can live our lives in such a way that brings glory to God. Sadly, much of our world is far from holy. We live in an immoral, Rev. Trent Rankin evil age, that reflects little of the attributes of God. Yet as ambassadors for Jesus, even if our world isn’t holy, we can be. Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 6:19, “Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God?” (CSB). As Christians, we have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. Think of that, God dwells within us! When we think of this fact, it completely changes the way we look at how we live our lives. Our lives should always reflect the holiness of God. We have been set apart by God, as His children. Every day, we can seek to be like God, as good righteous people, working to grow more like Jesus. Imagine if we lived holy lives before every person we met. If we did, we could change our world. We can’t control everyone around us, but we can control us, and we can reflect God. Just as God is holy, be holy!

Nancy Myers Nancy Myers, 75, passed away January 6, 2022 at Stanley Total Living Center. Born in Charlotte on March 27, 1946 she was a native of Belmont. She was the daughter of the late John Aldrich and Esther Coffey Myers. Nancy attended Belmont
Sandra Haynes Smith Sandra Haynes Smith, 76, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on January 6, 2022. She was born December 13, 1945 in Mecklenburg County, the daughter of Geraldine Adams Haynes and the late Joe Ralph Haynes Sr. Sandy was a loving wife for over 51 years. Sandy and Dewey became inseparable during retirement by enjoying their days together. She took care of Dewey and he took care of her. Their daily life of marriage was an example to all her family and friends. They loved unconditionally. Sandy was a mother that thought of everything. She knew the details that were important in her children’s life. As Leeanna and Josh got older she knew the details every step of the way. She cared for them, supported them, encouraged them and loved them. She taught them how to be light for others. She shared that same love and care to her son in law, Shane. She loved to shop and most recently enjoyed the convenience of Amazon. She loved all flavors of coffee and enjoyed them during any season. Sandy is known by her family and many of her friends as “Sassy”. The name given to her by her niece at a young age. Sassy became her forever name by her grand-
High School and rejoiced in her reunions with her former classmates. During her life she was an active member of the Belmont Historical Society, Belmont Woman’s Club, and Red Hat Society. She spent countless hours serving the community at S.O.C.K.S. helping those in need and working the election polls for the Gaston County Election Board. She loved crafting where she created cards for family, friends, and to the residents and staff at Stanley Total Living Center. She will be remembered for her humor and her love for her children, grandchildren, many of her granddogs, and her trips to Disney World. She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Cloninger Edwards and husband Sam of Schwenksville, PA; son, Dan Cloninger and wife Ashley
of Gastonia; granddaughters Lindsey Caroline Edwards, Haley Madison Edwards, Rebekah Grace Cloninger and Emma Kathryn Cloninger; and granddogs, Jake, King, Major, Jack, and Lily. Celebration of Life will be at a later date. The family would like to express their gratitude to Stanley Total Living Center for taking care of Nancy in the later years of her life. sons, Carson and Wilson. She loved her grandsons and all things they did. She watched them play sports, volunteered in the schools and supported them every day. They took every phone call, visit, adventure and hug whenever she offered it. She was their biggest fan and they loved her for it. Sassy loved long talks with her brother Joe and catching up with friends on Facebook. She loved her family and cherished all her time with them. Sandy served the Lord from age 15 by playing the organ in church. She played at many churches and used her musical talents in so many ways. She touched many church families with her loving heart. Sassy had a big smile that brightened everyone’s day. Her kindness and love was given to everyone that she met. She loved talking to friends and those who became her friends when she met them for the first time. She never met a stranger. She was full of joy. She was a wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, mother in law, sister in law, aunt, niece, friend, mentor, cancer survivor, encourager and life of the party. She left things better than she found them. Sandy will be deeply missed by her husband Dewey Smith; mother Geraldine Haynes; daughter and sonin-law Leeanna and Shane London; son Joshua Smith; brother Joe Ralph Haynes, Jr. and wife Paulette; grandsons Carson London and Wilson London. Her closest niece Jolee Toms and her husband Kris, great niece and nephew, Kaylee Toms and Kaleb Toms. Herman Eldred Parnell Herman Eldred Parnell of Belmont died on January 6, 2022. He was born in a mill house on July 17th, 1928 to Knox and Edith Parnell of North Belmont in Gaston County. Herman’s youth in the mill village of North Belmont was typical for a 1930’s family. The Parnells were thankful for the one-bedroom home that they rented from the Acme Mill. The space was sufficient to raise Herman and his five siblings. A large garden and a single dairy cow supplemented the family’s food. One memorable day for the Parnell children was when Knox brought home a loaf of store-bought bread that already had been sliced by a machine! Like the other boys in the village Herman played sports, hunted
squirrels, placing the furry tails on bicycle handlebars, and worked in the family garden and barn. After graduation from Belmont High School, Herman enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1945 and the motto of the Corps, Semper Fi (Always Faithful) became the watchwords of his life. His casket will be proudly draped in the American flag. During a leave from the military, Herman went to the Bank of Belmont to cash a check, and there he was struck by the beauty of a redheaded teller named Mary Elmore. They soon fell in love and married in 1950. The couple enjoyed a oneday honeymoon in Daytona Beach because Herman had to report back for duty. After his honorable discharge, Herman enrolled in Belmont Abbey College. He graduated in the class of 1954. Herman spent his career in financial services. During the 1960’s his work caused the growing Parnell family to move first to Charleston, then Asheville and Winston-Salem before returning to Belmont permanently in 1968. His life in Belmont revolved around the needs of his family, his work and his faith. In his spare time Herman jogged, played ten-
nis, beautified his yard and dabbled in oil painting. He was also a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. The Parnells were faithful and active members of First Baptist Church in Belmont where his solid foundation in the love of Jesus Christ was imbued in his children. Herman’s beloved wife Mary died in 2008. He is survived by his four children; Deborah Hains (David) of Huntersville; Linda Gabbert (John) of Little River, SC; Nancy Kopfle (John) of Charlotte and David Parnell (Suzanne) of Clover, SC; and his sister, Aileen Parnell Parker-Stowe of Belmont. He took great delight when his six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren called him GrandDaddy and GreatGrandDaddy. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, January 15, 2022 at First Baptist Church, Belmont with Rev. Andrew Renfroe officiating. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, www. firstbaptistbelmont.com or to Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County, 1840 E. Franklin Blvd., Gastonia, NC 28054. Condolence messages may be sent online at mcleanfuneral. com. McLean Funeral Directors of Belmont is serving the Parnell family.

closer. It’s another plateau reached. And the buzz from others around the arrival of these two cars is palpable. Very cool!” Wells explained the significance of having three trolleys in Belmont. “What’s important about these cars is that it gives us two operable cars immediately and once we get our car (1913 Brill) operational that’ll be a third car. Other than Memphis and a museum around Washington DC, there are not three operating cars anywhere else that I know of in the southeast. More importantly, is that now that the tracks are ready and we have two operable cars, there’s less pressure on us to complete the restoration of our car in the coming months. This segues into another part of the project.” The three cars run on electric motors. Since live overhead wires of the original type are not really an option, Wells says his group is work-
ing to obtain propulsion in another way. “We are working with UNCC’s engineering department to design a battery pack that will provide power to the cars,” he said. “There’s a group of seven young engineers, or soon to be, from the Electrical, Civil, and Mechanical departments designing this cart as their Senior Design project. This battery pack will be on a cart that is towed behind the trolleys. The battery pack itself will also be self-powered to drive down the tracks, switch tracks, and back up to another car when we choose to run another car. Over the next few years, this will save us from having to provide power to each car separately. It’ll be controlled with a remote and I think it will be a hit, even among the non-trolley fans, with the young and old kids alike. The battery project is supposed to be completed this spring and ideally we would like to demonstrate it
to the public, and the students design peers and mentors. So having those two operational trolley cars will give us an opportunity to potentially demo the entire trolley project this spring. It’s unlikely our current car would have been ready by this spring.” The future looks bright for the trolley scene in Belmont. “What’s the big picture for 2022?” said Wells. “So we will spend the bulk of this year trying to complete our capital campaign for the restoration of our car and to provide funding to build a car barn. Ideally, we would like See more on page 9. No. 85 being backed into the CityWorks garage.

to begin construction on the car barn by the fall of 2022 with construction completed by the spring of 2023. It will be a fairly large capital campaign, but we believe with the arrival of the two Charlotte cars and the progress we are making on the restoration of our own car and the battery cart to supply power to each car, it’ll help energize our campaign significantly. That affectively summarizes our plans for 2022. Our vision looking out three, five, ten years, etc: We’ll start to refine that vision as the capital campaign takes off and we look towards implementation of the project sometime hopefully in the spring of 2023.” About the new trolleys Number 1 The Red One Trolley No. 1 was originally built in Philadelphia by J.G. Brill in 1907 for Athens, Greece. The trolley’s restoration was complete in 1989 by trolley restorer Bruce Thain of Guilford, Connecticut. Number 85 The Green One Car 85, built in 1927, was the last electric streetcar to run in Charlotte on March 14, 1938. Alexander Garfield Collie, Sr. supervised the drivers when the streetcars
were retired. His son, Alexander Garfield Collie, Jr. was driving car 85 for its final run in 1938. In his personal diary, Collie Sr. wrote of the car’s final run into the barn. Directing his son, Collie, Jr. to “move over,” he took the controls of number 85 for its final run. After retirement it was sold for $100, along with all the remaining cars. Following the system closure, Charlotte would rely solely on bus transit to serve its citizens until the opening of the Blue Line in 2007. Car 85 was subsequently sold, stripped of its motors and seats, and sold to the N.C. Air National Guard, which used it for office space at the Charlotte airport. In 1939-1940, it was again sold and converted into a diner/ concession stand at Caldwell Station, N.C., being used in this role until the early 1950s. Around late 1951, it was purchased for $125-150 by Daisy Mae Trapp Moore, a Huntersville resident, who moved it into her backyard and converted it into a mobile home to house relatives. The car was subsequently occupied by various renters. Its last occupant, construction worker Clay Thompson, lived in the former Car 85 from approximately 1972 to late 1987, when the town
of Huntersville condemned the makeshift residence as it lacked indoor plumbing. Though Moore had intended to use the former streetcar as a storage shed, she sold it to the Emergency Properties Fund of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Historic Properties Commission for $1,000 on April 12, 1988. Following the streetcar’s discovery, the Charlotte Historic Landmarks Commission led the charge in its restoration. On May 6, 1988, the streetcar was returned by road to Charlotte and stored behind the Discovery Place Museum for preservation and restoration. Original drivers’ stools from the Charlotte streetcars and a period trolley bell were located and donated to the project. By the end of 1989, the streetcar had been moved to a former city bus barn, where restoration continued. Motors, trucks, wheels and electrics were sourced from retired streetcars in Melbourne, Australia. Initially named “Trolley Car No. 2” but unofficially called “Car 85” the streetcar was conclusively identified as Car 85 when surviving interior identifying numbers were revealed during restoration work in 1990. Its restoration was completed in 1991 at a cost of just over $100,000.

Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him America is strained financially; many people’s finances are exhausted and at their lowest possible point. How may we change course? There is a children’s story about Three Little Pigs, two who built their lives on poor foundations and one that built wisely. The one who built wisely weathered unavoidable hard times and we can too, if we wake up and restructure our foundation. Much of earth’s bedrock these days is granite. It has been mined and used for thousands of years as architectural and dimensional construction material. Granite is a composite of feldspar and quartz and because of its beauty is often used as an interior wall panel, flooring, tile or countertop. Durability and permanence, availability, and beauty; those are characters we most desire with granite. But is granite the most durable and beautiful; the best most reliable bedrock? We need to be careful because Granite, while hard, is not impervious. It can be damaged with a hot skillet, wrong chemicals or even an abrasive scrubber. So when selecting practical firm foundations we need to use God’s wisdom; so too as we consider firm foundations to stake our lives on. Is the stock market a firm foundation; is gold and silver? How about real estate investments, bomb shelters, or buying a secluded island? This unexpected Corona virus has certainly blindsided us worldwide; shaken many foundations. What can we count on? How do we understand life and where can we get rock solid advice? Two conflicting thoughts have contributed to many arguments throughout history. 1. Is it possible that an eternal all powerful, creator God really exists? 2. Can we place reliable faith in a cataclysmic accidental start to everything 14 billion years ago?
Darwin posited the theory of evolution in his Origin writings to come to grips with what he thought he believed. He came to see God as creator but distant; watching. He didn’t believe in Dennis Siracusa Hell, and likened all religious belief “to the mistakes his dog made in thinking a parasol blowing in the wind was alive.” Darwin grew up in the Church of England with designs on becoming a parson. He wasn’t an atheist; he was trying to understand what he was seeing. We do that too but sometimes, like falling off a cliff attempting a selfie, we make terrible mistakes or we create an atmosphere for others to exaggerate and build on with harmful conclusions. As Richard Dawkins noted, “Only after Darwin was it possible to become an intellectually respectable atheist.” So we’re humanly inconvenienced with questions. If what God says is true and only two eternal ends are possible; life eternally with Him in heaven or eternal separation from Him in hell, then that doesn’t leave any wiggle room. But wiggle room is what we want for lots of reasons. We don’t want to be good, or accountable, or forgiving, or loving to others. We want life “my way.” And there are many voices offering alternatives to God’s truth. Our critical decision is to grasp God’s bedrock truth available to everyone; His beautiful, durable and reliable truth, and build our lives on it; (John 3:16, 17 NIV.)

Recently Cramer blasted through three teams to take the Peoples Bank Holiday Clash held in Lincolnton over the Christmas break. Holiday tournaments tend to be challenging events. Some teams look at the tournaments as a chance to get away and have some fun. Other teams want to have fun, but they also look at a tournament as a chance to improve. Cramer is part of the second group. “I always feel you get better or you get worse over Christmas,” head coach Brad Sloan said. “We try to emphasize being competitive in the Christmas tournaments. It allows our guys to understand what it’s like to be in a tournament setting. If you are in the playoffs, you game plan for one team, and then turn around and play another on short notice. I think they are very important and I’m very happy with how our guys responded.” This year’s tournament boasted eight teams from Gaston, Lincoln and Catawba counties. To win the tournament, Cramer beat Bandy’s 56-31, East Gaston 56-54 in a tight one, and then in the finals Cramer beat the home town Lincolnton Wolves 67-62 to walk away with the tournament title. The second-round game against East Gaston was exceptionally challenging. The Warriors didn’t give an inch. They played some determined ball. This one could have gone either way as both teams matched up against each other well. In the early periods the Warriors set the pace and found themselves up 25-22 at halftime. In the third period Cramer played strong and made-up lost ground. The Storm outscored the Warriors 17-11 and took a 42-33
lead into the final period. East Gaston outplayed the Storm in the fourth period scoring 18 points to Cramer’s 17 but that wasn’t enough to overcome the powerful third period performance by Cramer. Will Kelly let the charge against EG finishing the game with 18 points followed by Justin Rocquemore who left the court with 10 points. Kelly also led the team in rebounds pulling down 10 boards. Over on the East Gaston side, Trenton Sherrill and McKaskill Rivers played well each finishing up with 18 points apiece. In the tourney finals the Storm once again came from behind to pull out a win. The Wolves were up 32-29 at the half, but Cramer rallied in the second half. An explosive 21-point fourth period allowed the Storm to push ahead of Lincolnton to pull out the win. After winning The Peoples Bank tourney the Storm shifted their focus back to the Big South In their first game after the break, Cramer lined up against Ashbrook in a conference matchup. The Storm had no problem getting past the Greenwave winning 84 -58. Justin Rocquemore led Cramer in scoring with 17 points followed by Will Kelly and Jacob Joyner. Kelly finished up with 16 points and nine boards while Joyner added 10 points and three steals to the final tally. With the win over the Greenwave, Cramer is now 2-0 in conference play having beat Ashbrook and South Point. Cramer will be looking at a busy January as the Storm is slated to play eight games in three weeks. In the coming weeks the Storm will face some tough competition with dual matchups against Kings Mountain and Crest, coupled with a rematch against South Point. This week Cramer has three games as they take to the road to battle Kings Mountain, Crest and North Gaston.

Abbey Women’s Tennis news... The Belmont Abbey women’s tennis team has been selected fourth in the Conference Carolinas Preseason Poll, the conference office has announced. The Crusaders received a first-place vote, among the conference’s 12 schools. The Abbey returns eight players from a team that
went 8-12 last year, which included a 6-4 conference record. In addition to the votes, juniors Kayla Vaughan and Elliott Peterson, as well as freshman Frankee Hendricks, were listed as Players to Watch in the upcoming season. Belmont Abbey photo
Belmont Abbey Fall Sports receives Messick Awards Three of Belmont Abbey’s Fall Sports programs have been honored with Individual Sport Messick Awards, the Conference Carolinas office has announced.. Crusader teams in the sports of Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country and Women’s Soccer were honored for their overall sportsmanship efforts during the recently-completed seasons. A student-athlete and coach from each institution vote separately upon the sportsmanship of all conference competitors. Each institution then submits those votes to the conference office, where the averages are then calculated to decide the winner for each conference-sponsored sport. At the end of the year, Overall, Men’s and Women’s Messick
Awards will be presented based on a tally of the individual sport results. The Team Messick Sportsmanship Awards are named after John D. Messick, who was the President of former conference member East Carolina from 1947-59. Messick truly championed sportsmanship and even wrote a book entitled, “Personality and Character Development.” 2021-22 Conference Carolinas Fall Team Messick Award Winners Men’s Cross Country: Belmont Abbey Women’s Cross Country: Belmont Abbey Men’s Soccer: Southern Wesleyan Women’s Soccer: Belmont Abbey Women’s Volleyball: Southern Wesleyan

Gaston County Police Dept. was honored to donate to three charities who do so much for the community. Due to ‘No Shave November’ and ‘Don’t Shave December’ the department was able to donate $2,000.00 each to Webb Street School Food Pantry, Crisis Pregnancy Center and the Salvation Army’s Empty Stocking Fund for a total of $6,000.00. This would not be possible without the generous donations from County Police employees (by those who can grow beards and even by those who cannot). Chief Ramey described it best by tying it back to the County police mission statement, “this highlights our compassion and concern for the quality of life for all of our citizens within Gaston County”.
The Cherryville High School cheerleaders (above left) earned first place at the 2021 North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) Cheerleading Invitational Championship. The squad earned top awards for Small Varsity and Varsity Game Day in the Division II category. In addition, East Gaston High School (above right) earned first place and South Point High School (photo below) placed second for Super Varsity in the Division II category.
